Reluctant necromancer Esper Jones had a quiet life, hidden away with her freak looks, and her freak powers, in her freaky old witch’s house. But her beautiful, ghost-whispering boyfriend Toma has destroyed her carefully crafted, people-free life.

Now she’s hearing voices in her head, monsters are running amok in Hellsfork, and there’s this vampire she can’t seem to shake. Somewhere between the black witches, hungry ghouls, and cowboy vampire hunters, Esper finds herself with a growing circle of people who actually seem to care for her (for some weird reason). Now, if she can just keep them all alive, when death is really more her thing….

Author’s Note:

Fed up with the usual tropes in romance and reverse harem? I wanted characters that are more than the fainting female and alpha male cookie cutter stereotypes that saturate the genre. (There’s nothing wrong with it, if you like that sort of thing, but it just got old for me!) People come in all shapes, sizes, personalities, and gender/sexual orientations—so when I pick up a book and have trouble telling the difference between the characters…that’s a problem.

*The Reluctant Necromancer series is a sequence of novellas between 35,000-40,000 words in length. While the main plot arc in each book will be resolved, there may be mild cliffhangers/segue into the next book with new issues arising.

*This author’s characters are as flawed and damaged as real life—do not read if you are easily offended by talk of past trauma of any kind. This includes uncomfortable situations of any kind—sexual, physical, mental/emotional. (No explicit scenes of this nature, generally, but they will talk about what’s happened in the past and it may be distasteful if you are easily triggered).

*Contains mature adult content, including but not limited to: graphic sex, adult language (that means swearing, folks) and fictional situations with some gore and or action/violence.

*This is a reverse harem urban fantasy, and the author firmly believes love is love, and as such includes themes of: polyamory (multiple lovers), MF, MMF, MM, FF, and MMMFF love.

Sometimes our greatest strengths come from our deepest challenges. I write magic and romance, starring a cast of creatures with feathers, fins, and teeth. My books include paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy romance--with the occasional steampunk or alien story thrown in just for kicks. My pan heart firmly believes love is love, so you'll see straight, LGBTQIA, monogamous, reverse harem, and poly relationships in my work. My favorite theme is overcoming our inner demons and the insecurities that hold us back.
I also advocate for self-development and mental health and dabble in non-fiction as time allows. I love the outdoors and still hope to be abducted by fae! (I may have more in common with my characters than I care to admit.)

Now she has a vampire boyfriend too!

Vampromance by Kate Draper continues the story of the necromancer with the medium boyfriend but now she adds a vampire to the mix. These really aren't normal medium and vampires at all! Interesting story!

I don’t get to binge-read this series like I did Draper’s previous reverse harem epic, but I’m enjoying it all the same. Esper is an intriguing character, and I appreciate the set-up of her being lost from her family line as a way for the audience to learn about the greater magical world through her eyes. However, the way she continues to belittle her appearance is aggravating, and I hope she gains some self-confidence soon.

I was initially worried that Esper’s relationship with Toma would replicate that between Gesa and Oison, but all four characters are so different that it hasn’t happened. The vampire who blazes into Esper’s life breaks a lot of genre tropes as well, so I’m excited to see where all the relationships lead.

The greater meta-plot is full of all the mystery and action I could want. I laughed off the “cowboy vampire hunters” in the novella description, but it’s actually accurate and not played for laughs. This installment features a complete arc of action while also slipping in plenty of hints for future developments. I’ve already pre-ordered the next book.

Urban

Two was better than one in the series. The romance was more natural. The bad guy is a recurring nightmare.

Ugh 😩 I’m trying really hard to not let the odd publishing choices (i.e. the fact that they’re novella sized bites that could’ve been probably a trilogy rather than 5/6 separate books or at the very least a boxset) overshadow my review because I really did like how this series continued in the second installment… but I just realized the rest of the books are not narrated yet, and the second one did also leave off on a cliffy — again, not a horrendous one but one with so many questions and left me wanting to start listening to the third right away. But it’s not there. And my CFS/ME makes it nearly impossible to focus on ebook right now so I’m really bummed 💔 Partially my fault for not making sure they were all available…

There’s interesting plot development, the second member of the RH is introduced (and I adore him! He’s like a golden retriever boyfriend), the best friend finally gets the tongue lashing she deserves, a bit of heat, and Esper gets a tiny taste of happiness & love she’s never experienced before. It’s a great continuation, just make sure you can consume the format it’s available in 🥲

I love this author, she’s one of the few that I’ll buy without reservations.

Quirky characters and lots of humor.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Book 2 in the completed 6 book series!
I loved this book just as much as the first, more actually, because we get another lover in the harem! Well, nest, as we’ll learn to call it. Drake is a very unique vampire and his courtship of Esper (and Toma!) is so well done, there’s excellent communication, and I adore him! The two boyfriends both feel fully fleshed out and unique, they do not blend together or get confused for each other. I love this little MFM trio! Ooh, and that spice!

We deal with ghouls in town and a mystery man. Oh, my gosh, in the final chapters as well, we get to meet another two great characters! Jet the jet black kitten (or is he?!), and Luna, the town veterinarian. Onto book 3 to see what is going on next!

Loved!

This series just keeps getting better and better! I’m in love with the adorable relationship between Esper and Toma, and now adding Drake to mix is getting interesting! They boost her confidence in herself and in her ability to care about others . This series is a must read!

I don’t know why I continued with this series. It think it’s just bc the audio book was there and I didn’t want to look for another one. I hate the FMC. I don’t know why any of these guys are head over heels for this woman. She’s rude, insufferable and just all around annoying. And the plot was wicked rushed again.

Killin' it!

Adult. Paranormal. Rh. 2/? I'm really liking the pattern of a simple problem and a love introduction. This one had more of an anxiety fell to the relationship though, and it definitely fit what was going one. Definitely continuing the series as they come out.

Thoroughly in love with this series

I'm loving the quirks of this cast of characters. Esper, Toma, and Drake fit well. I'm looking forward to learning more about them and what brought them together.

And a vampire joins in

These stories are just way too short, the characters are fabulous and quirky, the plots are great, but they just feel like solutions to their problems are too quick and easy, and there is also a buildup to something, a big reveal, that never happens.

Enjoyed

Ugh this poor female. Her emotions make me want to cry. The self hate she has going on. I can’t wait until her guys help her heal. This one was crazy and toma is my favorite. I see a pattern here. Adding a man every book I kinda hate that. Enjoyed the reading.

Esper gets a new love interest and as the title suggests, he is a vampire. Its become a reoccurring theme that her and her friends are pursued by a new enemy. I'm not sure how they will keep them all away if the different groups join forces.

Halloween Havoc

I have grown to really love Spooky and Bitey. Esper is growing on me too as she gains more confidence in herself. She was a little less whiney than in the previous book.
