As a self-proclaimed bibliophile and research geek, it's no wonder Jennie L. Morris writes romance and historical fiction with a flair for realism. Her love for learning led her to obtain degrees in Anthropology and Biology, which she often relies upon during writing. Coming from NE Ohio and raised on a small beef cattle farm, life was anything but ordinary growing up.
Jennie now resides in rural Kentucky, among the bluegrass and dazzling horse farms, with her amazing southern gentleman of a husband and their spoiled boxer pup Archie (Archibald Nubbintgon III). When she isn’t reading or writing, she feeds her tea obsession or perfume addiction, letting the scents and flavors fuel her creative fires.
To all the stories: The stories plots were quite fascinating and drew the attention and made you wonder what would happen next and how they would go on if they were to continue on. The characters were well developed. There were a few ... spelling errors (not all but some) - unless that was just my phone.
Individual stories:
Heirs of the Sky - Jennie L. Morris: The story is an interesting one. Very neat. To have a lie in government about the town in the sky and the town down below and the story was beautiful, the characters were well written. I wanted to see more. It was intriguing and had my attention. Very cool.
Barren Strawberry - Joshua Ian: I’ll be honest. Definitely not what I was expecting. I was thinking a story about strawberries 😂. But as I read on it got more mysterious and I wanted to know what would happen next. I was transfixed. What a story. What an ending! This story was very neat! Loved the storyline.
Gear Reaper Coven of the Damned (book 0.5) - Vanessa Ross Magi and Angels and the like are really neat and I found this especially interesting and the plot was very attention grabbing indeed and was very peculiar and i needed to know what would happen next. I loved the final outcome and it was great. This story really was cool. I love angels and magi type things too.
Gears of Winter - Kendra Moreno I’m a sucker for anything to do with Norse Mythology and Loki. This story was quite interesting in its perspectives and the thing about Ragnarok and Dark Elves and blood of gods and goddesses. The Hunt is very neat and the need for the Wolves. I loved the kindness shown to the boy. Absolutely neat.
The Salt Mines - T. Elizabeth Guthrie The ideas and the story was very neat. Might’ve been my mood / my day but it seemed a little off like it was too fast maybe or too rushed and simple. It went from one thing to another right away and plans right away which of course it’s a short story it could’ve been transitioned a bit more perhaps. I enjoyed it though. The story was neat and the idea of people helping out was neat.
Through the Veil - Casia Courtier Felt very real and was a neat retelling if Alice. It feels so real and you feel with the characters - with Elise and what was going on and out disorienting it probably was to go through all of that. Such an interesting way to see things. Fun Alice retelling. Felt real.
Trouble with the Mechanist’s Daughter - Lorah Jaiyn Death is hard. It effects everyone differently and for Cally it made her weak and strong. She pushed herself and needed to figure it all out why her father was dead, murdered. Mystery and grief a ‘fun’ combination. Got me. My heart weeped for her. What a story. It did feel a little quick though.
Chasing Time - JV Stanley What an interesting idea of a story. And the mystery of it and what happens. The characters too quite interesting and a name like Catfish... interesting. This is pretty interesting. I wonder what happens after. Time is a very interesting thing to ‘play’ with. I took a philosophy class in grade 13 and when we spoke of time it was always interesting. A neat thing to create a story by.
I really enjoyed this book. Each story had its own take on steampunk, some staying true to the genre and others branching out and making it something new. My top stories in this anthology were “Heirs of The Sky” by Jennie L Morris. I really liked the new world she created with the rich living high in the sky and the less wealthy living in the ground. Esther has a grand adventure when she falls from up high down to the bottom level. Very wonderful writing and left me wanting to know more about this world. I also enjoyed “Trouble with the Merchants Daughter” by Lorah Jaiyn her story about a girls who’s father is killed I a accident teams up with the man she believed killed her father to find the true killers. I really enjoyed the characters in this one.
I am still reading this fantastic anthology and for now I give you: *Gears of Winter by Kendra Moreno The author goes back to steampunk but this time with Norse gods and threat of Ragnarok and there is magic, and chase, and loads and loads of action. The characters are quite interesting, as the author gives her own interpretation of Odin, Thor, Loki, and adds Skadi into the mix. I enjoyed their interactions greatly and can't wait to see where their adventures will take them and how the group dynamics will change. The story is fast paced and there are some unexpected twists, and obviously there is an open ending, and the author did a fantastic job setting up the atmosphere and tone of the new series. This was a great introduction to the series, I loved it, and I can't wait to read more.
I’m still reading this anthology but wanted to review Kendra Moreno’s story Gears of Winter. All I can say is Wow. This is a steampunk take on Norse mythology and is an exciting start to what I hope is going to be a series since it ended on a cliffhanger. Well, maybe not a cliff, but a very big hill. Skadi’s wolves intrigue me. Loki is not at all what you’d expect-in a good way-and Thor, lol, he’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect. This is great story and a must read. I’ll review more when I finish the others :)
Please note that this book will no longer be available in this kind of edition. The authors are working on a different edition.
But let's talk about this one: As often happens when I read short story collections, there were stories that I didn't really get into so much and then there were stories that I believe should be turned into a novel or at least a standalone novella.
Here are the stories that I really enjoyed and didn't want to end:
Heirs of the Sky - Jennie L. Morris: This was an interesting story of a town in the sky and a town down below. The story itself was great and the characters were intriguing. I could absolutely see this storyline in a novel or even a series of novels.
Gear Reaper Coven of the Damned - Vanessa Ross Magi and angels joining forces? What can go wrong! I was glad to find out that his will be a series. The story definitely deserves to be continued.
Through the Veil - Casia Courtier I love reading retellings and have read a few Alice retellings. Most of them were not my cup of tea. This one, however, was a fantastic retelling. I felt with the characters, in particular Elise. I kept imaging how I would react if this whole scenario happened to me. This retelling deserves being told in more detail in a novel. It is way too good to just be a short story. Casia really put her heart into this one.
I have to admit that I would not have added some of the stories to a steampunk anthology. I felt that they were more sci-fi than steampunk. There were not enough elements to fall into the steampunk category for me. But nonetheless, I enjoyed this collection.
