Rate this book
It is time to go back from whence we came; back to the origin. After their cruise ships goes down in a freak storm, Payton and four other survivors find themselves stranded on a tropical island with nothing but miles of ocean between them and the rest of the world. But all is not lost. This strange island comes with a variety of fruits and its own pool of fresh water, enough to last for weeks. With renewed hope, the survivors settle in. However, as night falls, they soon begin to realize their paradise may actually be their Hell. They will discover a mysterious source, ancient carvings, and a terrifying secret in the form of a tropical guise. "Origin Effect" is a novelette written by Mercury and published with hopes to share their first written work over 10,000 words and to support them as they go own to create and audio produce original tales of horror, fantasy and sci fi. "Origin Effect" was originally inspired by music from the band "The Odious." Mercury is a recent graduate from California State University Long Beach, a Queer person of color, and an aspiring writer with a minor in Creative Writing. They run a Youtube Channel (Mercury The Scribe), narrating original stories and producing their written works. They also post short works and series on their blog (mercurythescribe.blog)

This is not the first story I've read by this author and it won't be the last. Mercury's work is fantastically unique and never fails to deliver unexpected thrills. I highly recommend this book and this author in general. This is a fast read with an excellent twist I did not see coming. A must read!

Origin Effect really impressed me with the cinematic feel of the imagery, I could vividly picture each beautiful and horrifying thing Mercury described. It's probably lucky it's a novelette because I didn't move from where I was sitting until I finished the entire thing. A truly engaging read about people trying to survive as the truth of their situation slowly sinks in.
