With her parents murdered and her inheritance stolen, all Penny Shoemaker has is her position at A Lady’s Favor dress shop designing handcrafted shoes for brides. But it’s not enough to support herself and her younger brother. Her only chance to regain what is rightfully hers lies in the strange but brilliant Samuel Morrison.
A dispossessed younger son, Samuel Morrison has a weakness for damsels in distress. So when Penny’s predicament literally lands at his feet, he turns his keen detective skills to her problem. As Penny’s predicament fills his time—she also begins filling his heart.
But can he regain Penny’s stolen inheritance, win her heart, and create a life not only for himself and Penny but for her younger brother, too, without running afoul of those who murdered her parents? The answer may be just one favor away...

This was an entertaining read. Samuel Morrison, the second son of a baron, was a very intelligent and observant man. Penny Shoemaker, was struggling to provide for herself and her nephew, since her parents’ murder. They meet when Penny is being thrown out of her home. Samuel decides to help her with her multiple problems. There are a number of interesting secondary characters from Samuel’s nephew to a gambling club owner called Deon Damon. There are a few mysteries to solve and the situation with Samuel and Penny to be resolved. They understand each other but will Samuel ever be able to afford a wife? There are a number of characters from the previous books mentioned but this can be read as a standalone. I received a copy from eBooks Discovery and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was an entertaining read. Samuel and Penny’s story was certainly filled with mystery and danger. I admire the way Ms. Lee builds her characters’ personalities. It’s always a pleasure to read her work. I received this book from eBook Discovery. I am voluntarily posting this review. This is my honest review.
I really enjoyed this story with working class heroine and upper class H. He's a mister who funds himself with business schemes, and his money also supports his brother's family. He's aware that his brain is different to others, accepted it but is a little lazy and somewhat lost regarding his purpose. The heroine is angry about losing everything to a crook, and her distress helps him to focus on important things. Once he saw how she needed him, he discovered that he needed her too. Lovely, slightly steamy romance and a murder mystery too.
Every time I read a book from this time period, it always makes me glad that times have changed. Samuel is a man whose mind is constantly on the go. He notices things that most people don't pay attention to. Because of his intelligence, he gets bored easily. Other than his nephew, he is unable to find someone who can can keep up in conversation. Penny has been having horrible luck and things seem to keep getting worse. Fate brings them together even though they don't see it. Samuel believes that there is a mystery to be solved that ties in with her bad luck. He appoints himself to help her, even though she doesn't believe he can. The more time they spend together, the more that each of them admires and respects the other. Samuel believes he has finally found someone who can keep up with him. Penny thinks she has found someone she can trust and just leave her. I liked this book because I liked the way things built up between Penny and Samuel and how they just seem to bring peace to the other. I wish there had been an epilogue so I could read what happens in their future. I received this book from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
I generally liked the characters in this book--they were interesting and likeable. I was very interested in the setting of the story, the dressmaker's shop, and how it worked, partcularly the difficulties Helaine had as a woman in business in Regency England. These were all reasons why I gave this story 2 stars instead of 1.
Helaine and her mother had been cast out of the ton because her father, an earl, was revealed as a thief, after which he abandoned them, leaving them in extreme poverty, a fate they were only, after years of struggle and hard work, starting to see light at the end of their personal tunnel through the emerging and fragile success of the dress shop. Robert's father, also an earl, was a womanizing spendthrift who started transferring his responsibilities to him when Robert was only 12-years-old. Robert had also been given a brothel by his father on his 16th birthday, which he converted to a hospital for prostitutes who had been injured or fallen ill and which allowed him to discover his passion for medicine. This should have made them strong, responsible people who were brilliantly suited to each other--and it sort of did. Unfortunately, the contemporary opinion that men and women lose their minds and all touch with reality when they fall passionately in love ruined the story. Helaine jeopardizes her shop and the future of her mother, herself, her partner, and their staff by leaping into bed with Robert, completely ignoring the fact that, by becoming his mistress, the ton whose custom she had been courting--which was critical to the survival of the business--would not patronize them any longer. While it was acknowledged that men had mistresses, they were in no way respectable and respectable women would not ever shop at a store run by one. And Helaine, having been raised as the daughter of an earl, would know this. Robert would also know that, by seducing her (even after knowing that her reputation as the former mistress of another earl was a lie and that she was, indeed, still a virgin) and taking her as his mistress (which he still intended to do even after learning who she actually was) would have ruined her future because at some point he was going to have to marry and he knew he wouldn't marry her. She was an idiot and he was selfish. That in the final scene he came around and proposed--and married--her at the end of the wedding of his sister (which ruined that scene as well) really didn't forgive everything that had come before, and her accepting his proposal in front of a church full of people really didn't speak very highly for her either.
That after all this I still didn't actually hate the book speaks well for Lee's writing, and if how accurately a book's story does or doesn't fit with the actual mores of a time don't bother you, then you will probably enjoy this book a great deal.

I haven't read much by this author before, but I was attracted to the story line (I'm a mystery buff, although most recently I've been on a Regency binge). Samuel Morrison is not your stock hero by any means, so if you're into the beefy alpha male types you'll probably be a bit let down by him. He's described-maybe a few times too often-as tall and lanky, but he has a brilliant mind, a la Sherlock Holmes. The heroine, Penny Shoemaker (who is a shoemaker-yes, the name is way too much on the nose), is his opposite: an earthy, angry woman who's been left destitute due to a swindler stealing her home and property.
At first, I thought the book was a bit much. You're either in Samuel's head, taking in his racing thoughts, or seeing things through Penny's eyes, her outrage and despair. It's not a relaxing first several chapters. Samuel at first seems irritatingly smug and blithe, and Penny's venom is a bit heavy-handed. However, toward the conclusion, you start to understand and empathize with Samuel more, and the way Penny stands by him while still acknowledging the reality of her situation is unique for a romance novel. Penny is more "blue collar" than refined lady, something also unusual for this genre.
Some reviews have criticized Samuel for being less of a hero, because he disappears from the plot during the climax, but I thought that was an interesting little twist. He did make sure Penny was protected, so in his own way, he was her knight in shining armor, while she was able to stay cool under pressure (something she learned from Samuel).
The only misstep in the plot, for me, was the weird visit to the brothel just past the halfway mark. I took a break from the book at that point and wasn't sure I was going to finish. I still think that was a weird segment, including the argument Penny has with the madame as they leave, with Penny assuring her that that Samuel will be able to talk men into having "parties" in the dungeon to bring in business (um, what?). I'm not a prude, and I'm not completely triggered by anachronisms in regencies, but that whole section was out of place. It was also one of the weirder sex scenes I've read in a Regency (granted, I'm not into the S & M books that seem to be currently common in this genre).
Don't give up on this book too fast, though. If you're tired of bland, overbearing, overly muscled lords and characters that have so much money they're throwing it away, give this read a try.
Samuel Morrison is nothing short of a genius. When a mystery in the form of Penny Shoemaker and her little brother's plight lands at his feet he can't not get involved. What better way to while away his time than to solve Penny's plight and help her figure out how to get her inheritance that was stolen back. But as Samuel spends more and more time with Penny, he discovers that she is nothing at all like the ladies of the ton. He is surprised at Penny's intelligence, wit and strength, and begins to fall in love with her.
Penny Shoemaker has been taking care of her infant brother since their parents were killed just months earlier. And now that she has a steady income making shoes and is sure they will be alright, her home and all her possessions are sold out from under her. Knowing that the will that was presented has to be a forgery, she agrees to let Samuel help her in finding out what happened, even though she thinks he is nothing but a mad toff. But Penny soon discovers that there is more to Samuel than what he appears to be. And as Penny's feelings grow for Samuel, she starts feeling protective of him and the way his society friends treat him.
But trouble soon finds it way to Samuel that he must deal with, leaving Penny with a promise to come back to her. And as the clues to her stolen inheritance are presented to Penny, she can't take the chance that Samuel will return to help her deal with it. When Penny is confronted by the man who engineered the loss of her inheritance, she is aided by a Bow Street Runner whom owed Samuel a favor. But what of Samuel? Will Samuel return to claim Penny as promised? Will Penny give in to her desire for Samuel even though she knows she is below him and could never fit in with society?
I really liked this book and absolutely adore Samuel! I thought it was very well written and the story line was really good. If you enjoy historical regency romance I recommend this book.

As a second son, Samuel Morrison's life has not been easy, especially since he's the smartest man in the room. In spite of always looking for the his next diversion and his next puzzle to solve, Samuel's life has still been a lonely one. Then he rescued Miss Penny Shoemaker.
I've always been a fan of the Sherlock Holmes character. I enjoyed peeking into the mind of the smartest man in the room, but he was a bit devoid of romantic or passionate desires. Not Samuel Morrison. He is very passionate, and he truly meets his match in Penny Shoemaker. Their initial meeting and subsequent relationship is tempestuous and fraught with danger. I really liked both of their characters and their on-screen passion was volcanic. The plot of this character driven mystery is well woven and Ms. Lee does a credible job of world building. Toward the end, I became concerned that the two lovers would not have a happy ending, but Ms. Lee did a great job of pulling the magic rabbit out of her literary hat.
Wedded in Sin is another book in the Bridal Favors series by Jade Lee. Each of the books stands alone, but many of the characters cross over and are part of the blended stories.
Content alert: In addition to moderate swearing, there are several detailed on-screen sexually intimate scenes.

Samuel was bored he notices every minute details of people and his surroundings! Penny is angry! Angry all the time Penny has what modern day is in need of Anger Management! Sam needs an equally intelligent female in his life and agrees to help Penny get back her home and her inheritance! Samuel needs purpose! Can help Penny and become a man of means all the while discovering his own lively hood! One part of the book "spoiler" has a little S&M but it's not what you think! The chemistry and humour is absolutely swoon worthy! I love how the previous characters interact with the new ones! The only thing is some scenes with Penny are so irrational! You want to step through the pages shake her and resume reading!
The romance between a lady who designs shoes for the fashionable women of the tonne, and a young second son who has a mind like Sherlock Holmes, results in an intriguing plot. As Penny and Samuel try to track down the persons responsible for the death of her parents and for selling her inheritance out from under her, they discover that they have more in common than most couples, starting with thinking minds. They challenge each other and bring out the best on one another. Although part of a series, this romance nevertheless is a standalone and does come to a successful close. Samuel has a brain and mind that is constantly working. He is considered odd by his peers. Penny is angry all the time because she is unable to truly do what she wants to do. This is a tale about an unlikely pair that meet and eventually fall in love. The story is filled with witty conversations as the two argue about how to go about solving a crime. They face moral and social dilemmas as they spend time getting to know each other.

The author was very careful in how she created these characters. The man a second son of the lowest titled level of society. Just low enough that his older brother's wife wishing him to have occupation isn't totally unusual. Just low enough that marrying a trades person might raise eyebrows but is just on the line between that which is not done and just barely being acceptable. Allowing a romance story that is an uncommon situation, but not an unheard of one. The story itself is a good story and totally worth the read.
I'm afraid I couldn't really summon much enthusiasm for this book. The writing was pretty good, but the characters just didn't grow on me. At the beginning especially, I was rather annoyed at the heroine who was constantly angry. In fact I had to struggle to finish it. Being a Holmes fan this should have been a good read for me; unfortunately, it just wasn't.

Samuel & Penny are equally very smart, challenge one another, bold and determined to solve the mysteries of their dire situations. I think they make a great team. Despite and partly because of the usual snobs, this is emotionally engaging, at times intense and very heartwarming. Enjoyed it from beginning to end. I like this book. The characters are believable, the action is realistic, the romance is sweet without becoming cloying. Conversations are easily understandable, the dynamics are interesting. This book is fiction, of course, and gives the reader the opportunity to see "the other side" of Regency romance, where everyone has to work for their living. An excellent, entertaining read. Thank you, Mz. Lee. You have written well!
I am enjoying this series. There were some minor editing misses in this book but they minor enough that I didn’t get pulled out of the story. It was a good story, with a fair amount of tension because you didn’t know how they could ever be together. There was quite a lot of sensual descriptions, more often titillating than explicit though the author went there too.
This story can be read as a stand alone and has a HEA ending - of course because that’s what all good romances have, don’t they? Maybe not, but I’m happier reading ones that are HEA. 😀
Very different type of characters for a regency. A shoemaker (a girl shoemaker!) and a second son with above average intelligence and observational skills come together to fall in love and solve the mystery of the murder of Penny Shoemaker's parents and the sudden sale of their property out from under her.
Wedded in Sin is a fun Regency romance and mystery with a clever gentleman and the shoemaker. This book is a page turner, and it was well worth setting aside several other books so I could read it.
Contains graphic sex scenes.

Penny is trying to take care of her baby brother when she gets removed from her home as it has been sold. During the fracas a member of the ton comes to her aid. Will he really be able to help her? A good story line with excellent characterization

Samuel Morrison & Penny Shoemaker's story was tender. Oppossites do attract and anything is possible when the heart is involved. Recommend. Happy Reading.
Book received from author at conference. No remuneration was exchanged and all opinions herein are my own unless otherwise noted.
I met Jade at Authors After Dark in August. She seemed smart, friendly, hilariously funny, and possessed of a delightfully dirty sense of humor.
My first thought after the first few pages was, “This is Brilliant; it’s a Sherlock!” The same idea reappeared over and over through out my read. It was hard to put down and kept me up way past my bedtime with its many twists and sexual tension and hot hook-ups. I loved how Jade just goes all out on the writing; she holds nothing back and just says what she wants and I was left with no uncertain idea of meaning. She was definitely “in the zone.” Also, her historical setting and points seemed pretty accurate in the details.
The book is filled with interesting characters who are often very different than your typical depictions of a particular person, for example, the constable is charming and caring. But least typical of all are Samuel and Penny. Samuel is sweet, but not exactly innocent second son. He is also a genius, in a kind of genius savant way. Like a pleasant version of Holmes or a congenial “House, MD.” He notices everything and makes those Sherlock-style deductions. He’s also handsome. But, as a second son of a not terrible well-off Baron, he is limited by his allowance.
Penny is not the typical Regency tradesman’s daughter. She is privately educated, and a brilliant cobbler at a time when a woman couldn’t be a cobbler. Her father was allowing her to do his work as he took credit. But, the Regency was a time of change and a time of things staying the same as well. We now look back at that time through Victorian lenses, but I am pretty sure they were not as stuffy as we think. The hook ups here aren’t at all stuffy; they’re quite inventive.
The plot is also complex and involves Samuel coming to the aid of Penny when she loses her home. She is thankful but Jade doesn’t make her so simple as to blindly trust him. He earns and loses her trust as he realizes she is not a “typical” female. There’s a complicated mystery to solve which Samuel, drawn to a beautiful damsel in distress, offers to solve.
She’s smart. And, talented and limited by her gender wherein tradition disallows women from being shoemakers. Have you noticed that a lot of historical romances share this theme?
The writing brings the characters to life through their thought processes and the dialogue which has both main characters thinking on their feet. I loved how Samuel's thinking about Penny changes throughout the novel. He’s so kind, but he becomes even more kind, As they get to know each other it becomes banter which adds some humor to what could be a Dickensian tale. The relationship changes both of them, as all relationship does.
I really enjoyed the book and think it is a gem. I wish I had found Jade Lee earlier, and I highly recommend this story!
Penny, has struggled trying to keep herself and her infant brother afloat. With her father dead, no one seems to trust her in her ability to be a shoemaker. Even though Penny is very talented and in the past couple years her father was alive, she was the one being the "real" shoemaker. Then out of the blue, a Constable arrives, saying that her business and home has been sold, and that she wasn't mentioned in her fathers will. She barely escapes with a few of her things and her brother, being left on the street when a gorgeous stranger swoops in to save the day. Samuel is a younger son, and is looking for something to give his life meaning. When he sees a damsel in distress, he can't help but go in to save the day. When he learns that her life has been turned upside down, he offers his assistance in getting down to the truth. As Samuel and Penny investigate and endeavor to reach the truth and get her home back, a flaming desire threatens to overwhelm them. Will Samuel and Penny be able to find a future together??
Wedded in Sin was a charming romance, and even though it is a regency romance, neither of the main characters are members of the Ton. Samuel is a gentleman, served in the military, and now is looking for a way to make his way through life on his own. Samuel was a interesting hero. Even though he enjoys pleasure and going his own path, he also craves a future. His character seemed very genuine and authentic, and it was fun seeing him interact with Penny and I do love a hero who is as caring as this one, but is still a bit of a rake. Penny was your average heroine, she was likable at times, and even though she did have a strong will, I felt like it didn't completely match up with her personality. I did think that she could have had a strong spine at times, but I did feel like she was a solid match for Samuel.
Overall a a fun and charming regency romance with a unique setting. Characters to bring a smile to your face, vivid details to draw you in, and a story to satisfy any romance craving you may have. ENDEARING ROMANCE!!
One of things that I enjoyed about Jade Lee’s book, “Wedded in Sin” is that the characters were NOT your Regency stereotypes of rich duke/earl/lord and simpering miss at her first season. Her characters, Samuel Morrison (2nd son of a baron) and Penny Shoemaker (merchant class) are about as blue-collar romance as I’ve found among the regency ton.
Jade Lee described her hero, Samuel, like Sherlock Holmes (á la Benedict Cumberbatch) and that sealed the deal for me to buy the book. Yes, Samuel is a genius at observation, but bored with life. When he sees a woman getting evicted from her home, he rushes in to solve her several mysteries. He assures himself, he won’t be bored until he can figure out her puzzle and ‘figure out’ Penny. Why should Penny trust this absolute stranger? Sure, he’s on her side, but how long will he be there until he gets bored again? Penny’s motivation to find her parent’s murderers and getting her home back push the plot forward, but I could never find what was motivating Samuel.
While the romance is (and should be) the focus of the book, I often felt that the mysteries could have been integrated and woven in the romance. Towards the end of the book, it seemed (to me) that the mystery was negated for a personal tragedy for Samuel. I guess Samuel’s disappearance was to show Penny’s growth as a character (she distrust men and has anger issues in the beginning). Another character saves Penny from certain death and another character (Damon) restores her property to her. How was Samuel the hero if other characters are doing his work for him while he’s off camera tending to his personal financial problems? Would a hero leave his heroine, when she needed him most, to make sure he has enough fortune to marry her?
Ms. Lee’s writing is brilliant and her descriptions divine, but there were just a few plot/character arcs that were unexpected to me (which isn’t bad – I like to be surprised, but not when the hero doesn’t seem emotionally invested in the romance as the heroine).

Wedded in Scandal (A Bridal Favors Novel) (Mass Market Paperback) I really like reading Wedded in Sin by Jade Lee. The book was very funny and entertaining. The characters were believable and enduring. With her parents murdered, Penny shoemaker has been turned out her only home and taken residence with her toddler brother to live at the neighborhood dress shop. She has the tools and knowledge to make shoes for ladies, but she hasn't the money for supplies. Penny needs to find out who forged the papers selling her family home to another man. She is outraged by the solicitor who says he has done nothing wrong. Samuel Morrison is the dispossessed second son who searches for his place in the world. When Penny is being evicted by the new owner of her home, he watches from the sidelines. He notices that a bag has been set aside by said woman and his keen detective skills kick in. Samuel is determined to help Penny solve her mystery and be her knight in shinning armor. But the more he's involved, the more his heart is yearning for her. Can he solve the mystery and win Penny's heart, or will he be defeated? I hope you read and find how two people were meant to be.
