Loved this addition to the Smartypants Romance series. In this “My Fair Lady” retelling, Ford, a professor, needs funding for his grant studying how social class and perception set you on a certain course from an early age, making it hard to break out and rise above no matter how hard you try. Susie knows all about that, having been abandoned by her mother, left to care for her alcoholic father, and forced to strip for the Iron Wraiths, and then a second motorcycle club.

The plot is a bit complicated to explain, but basically, Ford has to pass Susie off as not a stripper to secure funding. And of course, they fall for each other. This one was super cute, with two likeable, strong, flawed characters. And side characters I’m really hoping we might see again in future books. Also, I especially liked the way this one tied in bits of Green Valley lore. Will definitely be reading Piper Sheldon’s next Smartypants Romance book!

Favorite Quotes:

Then his words registered. I was half tempted to chase after him just to smack him upside the head. “Ma’am?!” Me? I was equal parts confused and offended. My outfit hardly covered my nipples and he called me something we call ol’ Mrs. Albensi when we saw her at the Piggly Wiggly. I’m not a ma’am, I’m a miss. I’m still in my twenties! Technically.

Now wasn’t going to be the best time to talk to him but the words had tumbled out after days of preparing them. I guess that’s why everybody told me God used a teaspoon to pour my brains in and had shaking hands.

You clearly have not been burdened by an overabundance of education.

I started making banjo sounds from Deliverance. I was two seconds from lifting my skirt and slapping my knees like at a hoedown…

Don’t let small minds make yours up.

It looked junky and old. I couldn’t remember what color the carpet used to be. If cleanliness was godliness, no wonder I was labeled a fallen woman.

My Review:

I am rather conflicted with this one. While the lashings of humor and insights were often smirk-worthy and brilliantly clever; I struggled valiantly to get through large chunks of Suzie’s storyline as it was hitting some of my least favorite tropes and triggers. I was expecting a rom/com, and while there were witty and humorous elements, the overall tone leaned more heavily toward angst, and toss in the several perilous and dire situations that weren’t at all comical, well ~ sigh.

I was frequently grinding my teeth and despising Suzie’s idiocy and lifetime of poor choices – with little respite as the characters just kept screwing up and making it worse. However, I was also wickedly curious, deeply invested in the story and remaining series, and unable to stop reading. Funny how that happens.

4 mother clucking stars!

I loved so much about this book, but most of all I’ve fallen in love with Piper Sheldon’s writing. This was my first time reading her work, and I look forward to reading more from her. This book had everything that I enjoy in a read. I love a redeeming love story when someone doesn’t see their worth, value or their true selves. I feel like both Suzie and Ford has awakenings within themselves.

This story had action, suspense, amazing chemistry between the hero and heroine, and love that bit them both on the backside in surprise. I won’t spoil a thing, but this story was grittier than I expected, as Piper really did a great job exploring the whole shady world of stripping, and how things can get really dark. I know this is fiction, but I’ve seen too many movies and news segments to know that some of this shady stuff really happens.

I love this quote from early on that Ford had about Suzie while he was watching her pole dancing.

“I was transfixed. It wasn’t just the way she mastered the room. It wasn’t just how her choreography perfectly correlated with the entrancing music. It wasn’t just her sex appeal. It was that unwavering gaze and focus on her task. To the rest of the room, staring blatantly at her admirable—ahem—assets, she was an object, but I recognized the barely controlled passion roiling under her skin. What would it be like to be that strong? Not just physically, but strong in a way that allowed her to bare her soul to a group of greedy strangers. My passions were locked away safely inside me and yet she put it all out there. Such bravery and passion.”

I love how eventually Ford felt free enough and secure in his love for Suzie to be able to open up his vulnerabilities, demons and insecurities to her. She let out his inner baser instincts, and I always love that!

wow, this book...

one of my favorites from smartypants romance so far with Baking Me Crazy and Code of Conduct !!

I love the heroine so much. I always am a fan of underrated female leads that fight preconceived notions about them & come at the top. This was a very charming & magical read. A true representation of smart romance. Great job Piper Sheldon I can't wait to read more in this series.

The author captured the vibe of Penny's world to the T.
I loved how all conflicts are dealt with very smartly with rational inner monologues. I liked the chemistry between the MC's and all that aspect of the plotline. I loved the wit & humor of the side characters.

Fantastic book!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

‘“It’s okay you know,” she said without looking up.

“What is?”

“To have a little fire in you.”’

My Bare Lady is a deliciously wicked, grittier and absolutely unique, yet spellbinding love story, one that gives you permission to be exactly who you are and who you were always meant to be.

In fact, it celebrates those differences and teaches you to look beyond the facade, beyond the gossip and the taunting monikers and sad eyes, to the heroine who just wants to dance and to the professor who just wants to make a difference, regardless of any painful histories.

This story takes the shame, hurt, abuse and all those ugly scars that were once thought unseemly by everyone else, and it bathes them all in light. So you come away from what is -admittedly - a darker story than the other Smartypants books, with a lighter heart, a huge cheesy grin and this wonderful tingly feeling in your tummy, because two incredibly multifaceted, very flawed but magnificent protagonists managed to overcome the odds and find a perfectly imperfect love story, in one another.

An absolutely spectacular love story at that.

This book really coerced every emotion out of me with very little effort, or rather I should say, author Piper Sheldon’s remarkable talent made it seem entirely effortless. All it took was some fabulously choreographed scenes and sharp-witted dialogue. Sometimes it was painful to read (Recalling Jethro wasn't always so upstanding), heart-breakingly sad, sometimes it was thrilling and stimulating, it could be downright hilarious and awkward, but most often it was simply dazzlingly romantic and sexually charged.

A well-timed glance. A sigh. A touch.

‘“I don’t want to hurt her.”

“How would loving somebody ever hurt them?”

“Because I can’t do it a little. If I let myself love Suzie, admit that to her, it would be all-consuming. There would be no moderation. I would suffocate her. My passion for her would overrun everything. I can hardly convey my thoughts to her now, if I let loose, I’d never get anywhere.”’

Going into this story, I honestly had no clue where it would lead. From the title and the initial set up, I had guessed it was a modernised take on My Fair Lady but once you excavated beneath the surface, you ended up with a tremendously well thought out and executed romance, one that wasn’t afraid to take you to the more degrading and darker levels of humanity, offering up a taste of violence but a whole lot of love and support and witty banter, in contrast.

Suzie was a terrific heroine. She was courageous and confident but had this underlying element of innocence and vulnerability to her, you couldn’t help but love her for who she was. And Ford. Ford was adorable, seemingly nerdy but a bit of an alpha- enigma. So very reserved and austere, his kind heart and protective streak shot out of him like a Care Bear beam whenever Suzie was around.

As separate entities, these two could not have been any different, yet they saw something in each other that made sense. So beautifully broken on their own, but fantastically resilient and loving together.

My Bare Lady is a fabulous romance with a provocatively dangerous side to it, one that all readers can immerse themselves in and come away all the better for having read it.

Piper Sheldon writes Contemporary Romance and Magical Realism books that hope to be NYT bestsellers when they grow up. For now, she works as a technical writer during the day and writes about love the rest of the time. Of course she also makes room for her husband, toddler, and two needy dogs at home in the Desert Southwest.

4.5 Stars

My Bare Lady is the first book in the Scorned Women's Society Series, a brilliant spin-off of the Green Valley Universe stared by the ladies that were "dumped" by Jethro Winston, back in his womanizer days.

We follow the somewhat tragic story of Suzie Samuels (aka Short Fuse Suze), a stripper and dancer for The Black Demons, the rival gang motorcycle club of the Iron Wraiths.

Suzie is getting deeper and deeper into the club life, and she just can't see the way out. She's judged only by her appearance and current profession, without anyone even giving her the chance to prove that she's more than a piece of meat.

Enter Clifford Rutledge. Cliff is also in a sticky situation, and so it happens that Suzie is the only one that can help him out. In a twisted and heartwrenching My Fair Lady reimagining, this book will give some serious food for thought, as it does an extraordinary job to bring this classic tale to a current and modern setting.

Ultimately, My Bare Lady is a beautiful book that teaches you perspective and compassion, highlighting that everyone has a story to tell.

As protagonists, Suzie and Clifford are multifaced characters that will keep you on your toes. They are interesting, complex and have a beautiful development through the story. As we get closer to the final pages it's easy to analyze how they were so important to each other's growths.

A tiny complaint would be that the one main conflict (that tied Suzie to The Black Demons) was a bit obvious. I'm not a fan when stories rely on blatant miscommunication to keep the conflict going. There were a lot of opportunities for the truth to have come to light, and maybe it would have even been interesting to see how both Suzie and Clifford would deal with that newfound fact. But, really, in the overall context of the book, it's a minor observation that doesn't affect the end results. My Bare Lady is an amazing read, and I'm certainly looking to read a lot more about the Scorned Women's Society.

This is the first installment in the Scorned Women's Society, a group of women who once dated Jethro Winston and had him screw up their lives.
In this one we have a heroine who became a stripper to pay off the debt she owed the Iron Wraths because of him. We also have a professor who is working on a thesis to help impoverished young people.
Enter the guy with the bucks who offers the professor a million dollars in grant money if he can turn our heroine, the stripper, into an intellectual lady.
Yes, it is like My Fair Lady, kinda. But there is so much to this story! I loved it!

I was so excited when I heard about this book and even more so when I received an ARC for it. What could be better than a modern retelling of My Fair Lady?! I also loved the tie it with the scorned women’s society filled with Jethro’s old girlfriends. The characters really won this book for me. I really loved Suzie aka Short Fuse. You may remember her as the girl who set fire to Jethro’s motorcycle but we came to learn that she is so much more than she even gave herself credit for. Suzie was likable and hilarious from the start but it was fun to see her grow throughout the book. She got caught up in the wrong crowd through unfortunate events and was stuck in a bad situation. Ford was an adorable professor who offers her a brief way out if she can be his experiment essentially. The premise was definitely far-fetched but once you move past that, this book was a lot of fun. There was great character development and chemistry between the two leads. I loved the supporting characters, especially Jack and Gretchen a lot and would love a follow up story about them. This was my first book by Piper Sheldon and I was really impressed. I would love to read more from her in the future! 4.5 Stars!

this is the second time i'm reading Piper Sheldon's book that leaves me with blue balls and sexually frustrated because after the immense sexual tension of the couples and sizzling hot make-out scenes, she left the oral in fade-to-black and no sex UNTIL THE END.

i enjoyed the story, yes. i love the trope (grump/sunshine). the characters are equally great, it is full of action suspense, great plotting, the writing doesn't make my skin crawl or have me cringing that makes me want to close the damn app or just smash my phone, thank god, but it is frustrating me that this slow burn is not giving me ANYTHING and only descriptive sentence of how they fuck like rabbits in a house at an old neighborhood.

description

you gave the heroine being tortured by someone else explicitly yet not giving a scene where she got herself a pleasure she deserves with someone she loves by her own will. it's not even funny anymore i swear i was an emotional train wreck because of this book. i'm putting the rest of the books on Ramadan tbr 🥴 leave me alone 😭

trigger warning: sexual assault, harassment, attempted rape.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this opposites attract romance novel and I thought despite the differences between the leads, they mesh well together. I will notate that I wish there was a bit more sizzle in their relationship and some steamy scenes that would have made this a killer read but overall, it wasn't too bad.

My Bare Lady
By: Piper Sheldon

*REVIEW* 💋💋💋💋
Once again, we take a peek at life in Green Valley, Tennessee in the Pennyverse. My Bare Lady is a retelling of the classic, My Fair Lady, and is a different sort than the other stories I have read in this series. It is a darker, edgy raw story that presents thought provoking situations and ideas centered around women scorned, namely by Jethro Winston. The heroine, known as Short Fuse Suzy, is a stripper at a local club under the thumb of a MC. It is easy to dismiss a stripper as nothing but a trashy woman, but Suzy is much more substantial than that assumption. Circumstances and events bring Suzy and Clifford(Ford) together. The hero, Clifford, is the straight laced academic type. Through what is essentially an experiment, Clifford sets out to prove how access and privilege make, or break, a person. Someone with opportunities can do amazing things, but those without opportunities become the lowest rungs on the greatly unbalanced societal ladder. Suzy is the perfect example of a self fulfilling prophecy. She has constantly been told she is nothing but a pretty face/sexy body, so Suzy believes this lie. Clifford wants to show how Suzy, with the proper resources and access, can change. During this metamorphosis, both Clifford and Suzy show how the judgemental expectations of society mold and force people into unsuitable lives. Have you ever wondered how many amazing intelligent people are homeless, with unrealized potential? Suzy is like this. She wants to be a dancer but not a stripper. She is stuck in a seedy club surrounded by dangerous people, and circumstances give no opportunity for Suzy to escape this nightmare. Clifford is an academic, but there is more to him under the surface. He comes from a background that is surprising. I love this story because it is so compelling. This is not your typical romcom; there is depth here, and the characters are multifaceted with heart, hope and willing spirits. I wanted all good things for Suzy and Ford and for them to break the boxes society has placed them in so unfairly. It is cliche, but don't judge a book by its cover. Read this book because it might surprise you.

My Bare Lady

The first book of the Scorned Women Society, My Bare Lady knocked it out of the park! If you're familiar with Penny Reid's characters, one of Jethro's exes, Suzie, also known as Short Fuse Suze, is the most well known of the exes, and the one that set fire to Jethro's motorcycle.

As much as you go into this book wanting to not like Suzie, this book changes EVERYTHING. The author has a way of grabbing my emotions, I could feel Suzie's fear and helplessness. Suzie is a good person, who made questionable choices, but still you just want to root for.

Clifford's (Ford) unique background and his motivations for his research echo what most Penny Reid readers expect from a 'smart romance'. It's refreshing, makes you stop and think, makes me want to do additional research for my own curiosity.

One of my top favorite moments in the book, actually isn't a moment, it's when the character POV header switched from Clifford to Ford. That made my heart happy, and gave me all the feels.

This book will grab you, and make you hold on for the ending, with a few surprises sprinkled in. I could not put this book down, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

My Bare Lady
This book was amazingly well written and I literally could not put it down.... I’m talking- walking around reading, making dinner reading, etc etc. I think I highlighted every other page, there were a lot of quote gems, I feel like it’s to hard to pick a favorite to share.
Short fuse Suze (Suzie Samuels) we heard about her in Penny Reid’s Winston brothers series, and I’ll be honest- it was hard reading about how Jethro used to be. Her story was/is not a nice, fluffy one, but, she continues to fight and persevere. Ford is a hero with a past, with his own demons that he was striving to overcome in his own way. I loved the evolution of the characters and how they learned to be more themselves by being honest and caring about each other. Their story was a little heart breaking. It was a tough read in a lot of ways: there are scenes that I would consider major “triggers”, and some situations that had my heart racing and my stomach turning, yet I could not set it down. Piper Sheldon handles these hard topics with sensitivity and you see the heroine and hero really struggle with their worth and ultimately overcome. Ford’s roommate was a star and I hope we see more of him in the future!
The Scorned Women society... amazing! Gretchen LaRoe is the sidekick every woman needs. I LOVE reading about strong female friendships and these girls were awesome.

Triggers- attempted rape, violence, abuse- physical and verbal, alcoholism

The acknowledgments made me well up in happiness. I feel so blessed to be a shark with Piper and so many of the Smartypants Romance authors. I am just so thankful for Penny and her world. Piper offered a unique take and incredibly well done story that blends in to the “Pennyverse”. While it has its dark moments, the light wins out. Even though there are some tense moments, I promise it will also have you giddy smiling, and I’m excited to see what comes next out of this series.

4.5 stars!

So I'll admit that I stayed up until 1am to finish this book in a day! Piper Sheldon is a new author to me so I didn't know what to expect and I'll have to say I'm quite impressed! The writing was great and I loved the characters. I also just loved the story overall. I was intrigued from the first few pages and I knew that I was going the book. I honestly want more of these two!!

Suzie and Ford are like night and day. Suzie is a 'dancer' and is trying to make somewhat of a life for herself but got caught up in the wrong crowd. Even though she dances for a living she's not what you expect. She's smart, funny, and brave which I love to see in a heroine.

Ford is a university professor who appears to be bit geek-ish and almost timid in a sense but that's not really who he is. He has a lot of fears and emotions that he keeps bottled up but as his relationship with Suzie grows, you slowly start to see the charming, hot hunk of a man!

I do wish we would have gotten a little more of his alpha side. About 72% into the book you get a taste for what it could be like and I was ready for it but it wasn't enough. Overall, it's a little on the tame side but I still loved every part of this book!

Highly recommend!

“...there’s nobody else for me. There never has been, and there never will be. I know that about myself. I forget to say the obvious out loud. I assume everybody sees it as clearly as I do. The moment I fell in love with you, it was obvious. Or so I thought. I kept all the words locked up. But you are it for me.”

THIS WAS SO GOOD!!! I love and admire Suzie so much. She‘s a strong female lead, I loved reading about her dealing with her past and how she grew into a better person. As for Ford, he also had some trauma from the past which explains his research and why he is so passionate about it.

I love their dynamic as a couple. Ford is so sweet to Suzie and he always showed her that she’s capable of so much despite her upbringing. The side characters were also so fun, I can't wait for the other ladies in the SWS (or maybe even Jack perhaps?) to get their own book.

Also: that epilogue is the cherry on top <3

(Disclaimer: These are my own opinions based on personal reading quirks. My intent is to inform, not spoil or project my opinions onto others.)

I love the eye-catching book cover and the story's connection to the Winston Bros. Both of those elements were a big pull for me, but I'm not sure that I really cared for the premise of this WB related series - Scorned Women's Society? After Grin and Beard It, Jethro Winston became a favorite book hero and since this story (and series) revolved around women who were Jet's castaways, it came across as petty and convenient. Being familiar with Jethro's story made reading the reiteration of his troubled past for 95% of the book redundant and frustrating. I wanted more notice of Jethro, the redeemed family man. It was also hard to reconcile Suzie's fleeting connection to Jethro and how much it was relied upon as a plot device. Suzie's conflict with the club was interesting and believable, but her animosity towards Jethro felt unfounded based on their one-sided, non-relationship.

With the fun book cover and ties to the Winstons, I really wanted to like My Bare Lady more. Not that it's a prerequisite for Smartypants authors, I will say that Piper Sheldon captured elements of Penny Reid's "voice" in all but her humor. Her writing was good, but it was too long-winded in some parts which slowed the pacing for me. I enjoyed Ford's character, but Suzie wasn't a favorite, so it was hard for me to feel their romantic connection. In the end, there was some solid writing, but the overall story and romance wasn't compelling enough for me.

So. Many. Feels.

This story. Whew. I mean it went places I wasn’t expecting it to. The depth and trauma these two have been through in their lives is heartbreaking. They have cargo holds worth of baggage and yet they were able to find each other.

Rocking chemistry, medium-low heat, dual perspective, and some amazing story crafting. It is an excellent addition to the Green Valley Universe. I can’t wait to read about more Scorned Women.

After having so many things said about her, Suzie Samuels wants her say. And boy does she have a story. I loved this book. It felt similar to “Wicked” in that she’s not really what she appears to be. You get to see this “crazy” woman’s story from another perspective and it turns out she’s crazy like a fox. And deserving of a lot of empathy.

I’m so happy she got to meet the ladies of the Scorned Women’s Society because Suzie needs a squad. I really loved how all those women who could easily hate each other, come together and support one another instead. Gretchen and her bat are “Friend Goals” for sure!

I had a bit of hard time warming up to Ford, but I can see how his past informed his present. He could just not keep his foot out of his mouth, poor guy. He desperately needed someone like Suzie to loosen him up. It’s funny how she was the one he set out to change, but he ended up doing most of the changing.

This story is not all rainbows and butterflies. There are a couple tough scenes that were difficult to read, and important to the story, but Piper handled them sensitively and with compassion for her characters and readers.

I am so appreciative of the peek into the lives of others in Green Valley and I’m so looking forward to learning more about other ladies in the SWS. And, I loved the Winston cameo as well!!

I loved this book there's everything--angst, comedy, romance, awkward hot leading man...I loved it!
The angst is VERY angsty though, I'm surprised there aren't any trigger warnings because I could see how this book would be EXTREMELY triggering to many.
TW: sexual assault
But I loved how the characters, all of them, had growth throughout the book and we got to see glimpses of character's from Penny Reids series.

**listening tot his on audible--Chris Brinkley is PERFECT for Clifford's narration...his voice is so cheerful, and sweet, and dorky in a really hot sexy way--he gives off golden retriever vibes in the best way possible!!! Susie's voice, Lilly something...she has a pleasant voice, but I feel like she's trying to speak quietly ALL the time and it's driving me nuts. Talk at a normal tone!!! Don't fake whisper!!! I legit feel frustration building up in me because I just want her to speak at a normal tone (I'm guessing she has no control over this...)**

Love, Love, love this modern day redo of Pygmalion (My Fair Lady) A very original take on this classic. It is a little on the darker, grittier side than your average RomCom.

“Your issue is not that you don’t feel, Ford. Your issue is that you feel too much.” She smiled and put her head back on my racing heart.”

“For all his faults, Jethro did do one thing right. Jet brought a group of badass women together. He must’ve seen something in all of us. We all have a bit of awesome. Don’t you feel it? That’s the reason we found each other.”

I wanted to read this book for a long time and I'm glad I finally did it because this was really good! I liked Suzie and Clifford as individuals and a couple a lot and they had a great dynamic. I'm really excited for the rest of this series because the concept is so cool!!
