DNF becase the characters made me so mad. I stopped reading when I discovered how angry I was at Helaine when I read that she was finally going to give in to Robert's repeateded importuning. The man is an ass. "No" means NO! A woman should not have to say no to you over and over again, and have you still keep pestering her to sleep with you. And when he finds out that she is the daughter of a disgraced earl, he thinks, "Despite her identity, despite the fact that she'd been raised a woman of his own set, her circumstances had not changed. And that gave him an opening to possess her." REALLY? And you want me to like a man who is this shallow and selfish!!? What a complete and utter jerk.

I wish that I could flip to the end of the book and find that someone has killed Robert, as he so richly deserves, but as I know that won't be the end the author has planned, I am tossing this in the Done pile now. Ugh.

Great plot, wonderful h but the H challenged me. She's gentry hiding in plain sight as a dressmaker, protecting her mother and trying to survive. He believes he's a good man as he cares for his family and tries to right his father's wrongs. I loved how the h upsets his view of the world and challenged his beliefs about himself. I really wanted an epilogue showing the H had learned from being a husband and father. I enjoyed this book but the ending felt rushed and unfinished.

This was an engaging read. Helaine was a resourceful and strong lady who needed all her strength to overcome the circumstances she found herself in. In her new found occupation, she had her clients best interests at heart. Helaine, also tried to help her friends. Robert, Viscount Redhill also looked out for others in his employ. They both had problems caused by their fathers. Although, Robert’s actions were not entirely honourable at first, he did redeem himself and I loved the ending. I received a copy via eBooks Discovery and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. It was well written, great editing, and the story had me laughing, smiling, engaged throughout and even crying tears once or twice. I would recommend this Victorian romance.

Robert's Lady Mistress💃💋💘

ADULT Historical Recency Romance 💕and Adventure.I enjoyed this book quite a bit until it got to the very end, which was silly. There are some humorous parts in the book, too. It's a fun, light read with some unusual ADULT scenes.

Robert's🐺🍆⛲ character has major flaws, but there is a happy ending, eventually.

"Thank you for your wisdom,"
He blinked, his mind only slowly shifting away from the sight of her lips. "You make me sound like a old cleric sitting on a dais. You know, some women find my quite spry"
"Some women would find aged cheddar cheese to be spry."
He Blinked. "Did you just compare me to cheese?"
"I did, my lord." Then she leaned forward and touched his hand. "But never fear. I have quite the fondness for cheddar cheese."

Lady Helaine was once a member of the Ton, and was raised in society, but then when it became a scandal that her father was stealing from others, they were cast out. Her father disappeared, and she and her mother were forced to provide for themselves. So in order to keep them from starving and living on the streets, Helaine's takes a new identity as a "Mrs. Mortimer" and she then designs gowns for young ladies in high society. When put in a hard position of asking for money instead of credit, since she will need food and more supplies in cloth and accessories, she decides to go to the Viscount Redhill. Robert is outraged when the Mrs. Mortimer comes to call and demands that he pay for his sister wedding trousseau, and believing the amount to be way more than he thought it would cost, he forces her out of his home, and threatens to call the magistrate on her. When Helaine returns home, she knows she will have to take swift action, but then Robert's sister, devises a plan for Helaine to get supplies. Helaine has been forced to take certain measures to get credit at certain suppliers, but when Robert and his sister demand to come along, she concedes reluctantly. A disaster ends up happening, and Helaine has lost her one and only source of materials. Then Robert declares his intentions to have her as his mistress. Even though that is the last thing that Helaine could ever desire, she finds she can't resist his tender embraces, or the way he heightens her senses with his kisses. When Helaine's past comes to light, he wonders if there will be a way to overcome the past and build a future together as husband and wife.

Over the years I have heard so many great things about Jade Lee. When I found Wedded In Scandal on the shelves of my local library, I couldn't resist trying it out. Especially since this whole series was there, and I wanted to try out the first one in the series. I don't always have the chance to read a series in order, but I do want to try in this series. I do love Regency romances that have a setting of a hidden identity and where a character has to get creative to survive. I truly fell in love with Helaine for the most part, strong and independent and smart. She had spunk and fire to her personality, she didn't just give into any demands, but went after what she desired. Robert, is like most hero's from this time period-Handsome, Arrogant, Stiff and proper. But underneath is a man that has a secret that could ruin him just as Helaine's secret could destroy all that she has built. Even though they seem to be from opposite worlds, they both have a unique bond with each other, and seem to connect because underneath the surface they are more alike than different.

I found the style of this story, very original in its own way. There were certain things, such as the basic story line that was very similar to many other Regency era romances that I have read. However, as I read Wedded In Scandal I found that it was way more intriguing than I thought it would be. I found it to be so captivating and witty and charming that I couldn't put it down, having only read it under a couple of hours. Yes it is slight shorter with only 300 pages, but I flew through the pages faster than I have in a book for a long time. There was a certain detail to the story that pulled me in from the beginning. I couldn't help but admire the compelling writing of Jade Lee as she weaves a tale of in depth characters and a plot with fast paced tension to sweep you away into a beautifully crafted love story of passion and desire.

Overall I couldn't help but fall in love with Jade Lee and the first installment in the Bridal Favors Series of Wedded In Scandal. A truly sensational read that is refreshing and emotionally driven!!! A WONDERFUL STORY!!! Well Done!

It's a good thing the hero begins as a sympathetic, heroic character in the opening pages because he spends a good share of the book being a jerk to the heroine. Granted, he's in a difficult position having to clean up his father's impulsive messes and keep his depressed mother alive and maintain the family's cash flow, but he refuses to take 'no' for an answer from a similarly strapped woman. He's basically a rich, titled bully, taking advantage of Helaine, even though she was born equally titled until her father lost everything. Robert does learn a few lessons about women and their difficult situation in the Regency era, and he shows signs of becoming enlightened, but that stubborn male persistence makes him much less likeable than Jade Lee's usual heroes. Hence, a 3.5 star rating for me.

Some great humor at the start of the book gains this a star, even though I was a little disappointed with some aspects of the story. The heroine is the daughter of an earl who was exposed as a thief, having stolen brandy from soldiers in the war. Shamed and bankrupt, he disappeared, and left his wife and daughter penniless and shunned. Helaine has become Mrs. Mortimer, a designer of gowns. Robert Percy, Viscount Redhill, also has a disreputable father, though he hasn't gone as far as Helaine's. Robert has spent his life cleaning up after his father's messes. When he encounters Helaine, he has to have her as his mistress. Now here's where it started to bug me... In other words, while I liked the story, there were points of logic that didn't work for me, and the guy never really got past the jerk phase.

I could really sympathies with the female protagonist and the plot wasn't so bad, but the ending was really rushed and it kind of ruined the whole story.
Helaine, the female protagonist, was an outcast aristocrat who was forced to do a mundane jib as a dressmaker, and after a few confrontations, she starts a romantic relationship with the brother of on of her clients.
Apparently the main hurdle in this story was the male protagonist's stupidity, as he considered Helaine below himself and had doubts about marrying her. Unfortunately, Helaine did not do anything to make him change his attitude and in fact, succumbed to his arrogant demands. When He came to his senses and realized that he wants more than just a temporary relationship with Helaine, the conflict was resolved.

Got about halfway through, but couldn't push myself any further. The characters have a backstory, but no real personality or individuality. Lots of period-inappropriate behavior anachronisms (not the least of which was the seamstress named "Wendy," a name invented by J. M. Barrie during the Edwardian period), and a plot with a lot of logic gaps made for a book I just had to put down.

I was a bit queasy at the beginning when Robert didn't seem to hear the word "no." In fact I might have given up, if this weren't a book club pick, and then I would've missed the characters learning to communicate.

An OK historical that tries to be a Lisa Kleypas novel and fails. The character of each protagonist as described does not match the actions. Likable folks, anyway, with a good but not great plot.

This had the potential to be an interesting romance. Helaine is the daughter of a disgraced earl, a drunk and wastrel who stole from another member of the ton and then abandoned his family after his fall. She and her mother were destitute and rescued from the poorhouse by a working-class woman, Wendy, who is a seamstress and once made a dress from Helaine's design. Wendy recognizes that Helaine has talent, and, together, they open a dress shop, A Lady's Favor, with Helaine as designer/saleswoman and Wendy as seamstress.

There's some stuff here that's very good. Helaine and Wendy are talented, and they've landed an earl's daughter as a client, who has just commissioned them to create her trousseau. That's a big coup, but customers routinely only paid upon delivery; Helaine and Wendy don't have enough money to purchase the materials outright, and there is only one person--a lecherous, manipulative trader--willing to let Helaine purchase on credit. He fondles her while shopping, and she has to flirt and put up with it, in order to keep her business running.

The scenes where Helaine strategizes about how to keep her business afloat amid the bullies and sexual predators she deals with are the best part of this story. I appreciated that the author spent some time showing how desperately precarious Helaine's life is--how quickly it could all fall apart if even one thing goes wrong.

And then there's Robert, the "when you say, 'no,' I hear, 'yes'"/"when I realize how far you've fallen from your previous social position, I think of how this will make it easier for me to get you into bed" hero. He really is awful, and what's horrifying is that Helaine--who is intelligent, mature, independent, and resourceful--secretly loves it when he forces her into a kiss or other intimacy. So not only do we have a "hero" who doesn't respect the heroine's boundaries or the risks he poses to her, we have a "heroine" in service of the "when she says, 'no,' it's only for form's sake--she really wants it" trope. Good to know that some authors are still romanticizing rape culture; I was so worried that the 21st Century might emphasize respect for each other's boundaries!

There are so many times in the first half or so of this book where Robert or his sister, Gwendolyn (the earl's daughter getting married), just barrel into Helaine's business and override her, without giving any thought as to the effect on her. Gwendolyn smashes through boundaries and sees everything as just a lark, while Robert smashes through them because he's constantly angling for ways to get Helaine to have sex with him.

Of course, Lee comes up with a secret for Robert that reveals him to be a kind and generous guy. But his backstory--and his supposed nobility to those less fortunate than himself--rings hollow given his predatory behavior to a woman that he knows is economically and socially vulnerable.

Just a disappointment all around.

The Pull of Love's Allure

She was hanging on by a thread. Still, she was hanging on to the life she had built for herself and her mother. Never again would she let another person destroy her life as her father's stupidity had five years ago. Now, if she could just get payment from the very arrogant Lord Redhill.

As heir and Viscount Redhill, he had been holding the earldom together since he was yet a boy. He was still holding it together even though his father, the earl, did his best to undermine him at every turn. Still, Robert would continue to be careful and suspicious. Whatever it took to protect his mother and sister. Now, if he could just get rid of the irksome Mrs. Mortimer.

I love a well written Regency romance with just the right amount of drama, humor and steamy passion. Wedded in Scandal by Jade Lee checked all the boxes. It was thoughtful, entertaining and engrossing. There was a perfect balance of dialogue to description and thoughts. I liked Ms. Lee' writing style and the way she developed the lead characters. Helaine and Robert had both likable and irritating moments. Still their love story unfolded at a steady pace, while still holding my attention. Considering the obstacles they faced, I kept thinking how will they were ever going to realize their happy-ever-after. Thankfully, the magic of fiction solved their problems and the indeed they had their tenderly sweet happy ending.

Content alert: This book contains some swearing and some explicit sexual intimacies.

I purchased this as part of a 3 novella bundle the author offered called BRIDAL FAVORS BOXED SET.

I didn't care for the H at all. He kept trying to force the h to have sex and be his mistress. I wished I kept track how many times she says NO! At one point she tried to get away and he grabbed her ankle to keep her from getting away. How is this romance? The h finally consents after he tells her a sad tale.

The H is adamant she will be his mistress until the last few pages. His change of heart was too quickly. Then the H's sister, who we meet in Engaged in Wickedness doesn't seem the same person she was in that story.

There is lovemaking, outside of marriage and heat level 4.5 out of 5. Since I didn't care for them as a couple, it lacked passion.

We get mixed signals as the worth of the H. Half the time we are told he can't afford any more than he already pays. Then he is taking two households shopping.

The h is hiding in plain site. She changes her name because her father left them in disgrace. But, no-one recognizes her? The H figures out her true name, but we are never told how he figured it out.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, lacked romance and has spice. (ljb)

With both wit and romance, this novel is certainly entertaining. By dint of hard work and sheer grit, Helaine overcomes the legacy left by her father, who disappeared to parts unknown rather than face his sins. Helaine discovers that her youthful dream of designing dresses becomes the mainstay of her existence, by which she sustains both her mother and herself. After a particularly trying day, fixing the mess left by his own father, Lord Robert Redhill in not in the right frame of mind to hold a discussion about paying bills with Mrs Mortimer. However, the gloves come off, especially when Robert's sister enters the fray. Despite his aversion to having further responsibilities heaped on him, Robert finds himself being drawn into shopping trips and making decisions regarding fashion design. Along the way, both Robert and Helaine, discover a passion between them, but with so many past hurdles to overcome, one does despair of the couple ever finding a way to be together. The book is witty and romantic and I found myself being fully engaged throughout. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.

Dear Ms. Lee,

I fell head over heels in love with your hero in the very first few paragraphs of your novel, Wedded in Scandal.
“Yer wants to go in there? But, er, why?”

Robert Percy, Viscount Redhill, ignored the mine manager and began stripping off his coat and gloves. They were in the shack outside a coal mine that his father had purchased in a fit of drunken entrepreneurship. Sadly, the earl didn’t fall down in his cups like a normal person. No, instead he bought businesses, which Robert then had to save. And given that no one in his family knew anything about coal mining, this was going to be a challenge indeed.

But the first step in a new venture—or after one of his father’s drinking binges—was to inspect the new property. So he was determined to go down into the hellhole of a mine despite Mr. Hutchins’s objections. He’d already pulled off his coat and folded it neatly to the side, but after one glance outside at the filthy employees all lined up near the mine entrance, he stripped off his waistcoat as well. He would have taken off his fine lawn shirt, but he couldn’t greet his new employees half naked.

However, by the end of the second chapter, I no longer thought he was a paragon of male perfection. By the end of Chapter Two, I thought he was a pompous prick. I was wrong both times—Robert isn’t a jerk, although he does tend to arrogantly overwhelm most everyone he encounters, nor is he a dreamboat peer. By the end of the book, I liked him and understood why the heroine, Helaine Talbott, not only fell but stayed head over heels in love with him.

Helaine has had a difficult past decade. When she was in her teens, her father, a drinker and a cheat, stole a case of fabulous brandy the Earl of Bedford had sent as a gift to his son, a soldier finding for England in Spain—Helaine’s father, the Earl of Chelmorton, had a drinking buddy in charge of certain military shipments to Spain and he somehow used information from his friend to nab the booze. Helaine’s dad, immoral and stupid, then threw a party and carelessly bragged about the brandy’s provenance. The Earl of Bedford, an unforgiving type, retaliated by socially destroying Helaine’s father, now known as the Thief of the Ton. Her father subsequently vanished and, within a few short months, Helaine and her mother were tossed out of the ton, and found themselves in the poorhouse. Helaine’s now business partner, a seamstress named Wendy (there’s a mystery there that’s never explained) bailed Helaine and her mother out of the poorhouse and suggested that Helaine and she—Wendy—open a dressmaking business together. Thrilled at a chance for survival, Helaine said yes. For years, Helaine has supported herself and her mother but, each day, Helaine worries the shop could fail and she and her mother will be again without resources. As a dressmaker and shop owner, Helaine has completely left her aristocratic past behind; in fact she keeps her past rank a secret, sure the ton wouldn’t buy clothes made, no matter how well, by the daughter of the Thief of the Ton. She uses the name Helen Mortimer and presents herself to clients as a lowly tradeswoman.

Helaine has one aristocratic client—the rest of her patrons are from the business class—the soon to be married Lady Gwendolyn, Robert’s sister. Gwen wants Helen to make Gwen’s trousseau—Helaine is really good at what she does. This would be marvelous for Helaine if she, Helaine, could convince merchants to let her buy fabrics and the like on credit which they, given that she’s a woman of no means, adamantly will not. Gwen, like all aristos, is used to buying on credit and so Helaine is stuck—she needs to make gorgeous creations for Gwen, but she can’t afford the fabrics she needs to do so. Desperate for funds, Helaine calls on Robert and asks if he will pay Gwen’s bills. Helaine tries to convince Robert the bills are for dresses already made, but he calls her bluff. Even worse, he accuses her of extortion, and readies to call the constable. Helaine implores him not to and tells him the truth, and he, still unwilling to pay her, says the best he can do is give Gwen control over her clothing funds and she, Gwen, can decide whether to pay Helaine. As the two bargain, Robert becomes enamored of the buxom, attractive Mrs. Mortimer. So much so, that, later the same day, he goes to Helaine’s shop with the intent of asking her to become his mistress.

Once there, he gets her alone and kisses her—she’s twenty-eight but knows nothing of passion. It’s a damn good kiss in part because
Nearly a decade ago, his uncle had taught him how to seduce a woman with just his tongue. It had been the most useful lesson any relative had ever given him.

Despite the stirring kiss, Helaine turns down his offer.  A few days later, he kisses her again, and, this time, he realizes despite her reputation as the long-term mistress of a recently dead Lord, she’s a virgin. He believes this is the reason she’s turned him down and he, sure the passion between the two of them would be remarkable, asks her again, differently.
“I have handled this incorrectly, Helaine, but the desire remains. I should like you to be my mistress.”

“And I desire to be an honest dressmaker who isn’t constantly accosted.”  She did not invest her words with anger. She simply stated it and prayed he would hear her.

He did understand her implication. His wince was proof of that. But that didn’t stop him from pleading his case. “I am a slow lover, Helaine, patient and generally considerate. And though I have never taken a virgin, I would make an exception for you. I would introduce you correctly to this business. And would pay handsomely for the privilege.”

Another winner by Jade Lee!
This author is an auto-buy for me. One thing I love about her is the uniqueness of her stories. None of her characters are cookie-cutter. Our heroine Helaine is posing as a humble dressmaker and calling herself Helen. Her ladylike manners and diction appeal to the ton, but they'll never know her secret shame... She was supposed to be one of them, until her father was accused of thievery of the worst kind.
The hero is trying to deal with his own father's follies. He has a habit of buying unprofitable businesses, then expecting his son to turn them around. What a mess he finds himself in as he tries to inspect a mine that has been woefully mismanaged and is now a death trap with children working as horses!
You can't help but root for both of these characters, made strong by unfair circumstances. Their love grows from a mutual respect--of sorts. I'll leave it at that. No spoilers! It's worth finding out for yourself what I mean.

I was really drawn into the interesting dialogue and fun banter between man6 of the characters in this novel. The story picks up nicely after Gwen and Edwards’s engagement. Helaine and Robert are unique individuals and have different and very realistic family circumstances that they bring to a relationship that usually does not fit into your typical historical fiction romance. I think that’s why I liked them so much. I enjoyed reading about the different struggles that each character was facing and how they navigated finding solutions. The story did culminate in a a HEA but I was a bit disappointed that it just left me hanging without any final closure. Perhaps that’s where the next novel will pick up? The book is an interesting read. Hellaine was born as a daughter of an Earl but she is now a cast off and shunned by the polite society because of her father who stole from the military. To survive, she changed her name and began working as a dress designer. She's to design the bridal dresses for Gwen and her future in-laws.
Lord Robert is the son of an Earl and the brother of Gwen. She saw Hellaine and wanted to possess her. Due to the fact that she's a dressmaker and not up to his social status, he wanted her as a mistress by all means. Even though she refused, he still persisted and refused to take no for an answer. Eventually, he did right by her and married her. "I received this book from eBook discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review".

Should never be a mistress

Helaine is a lady who owns a seamstress shop in humble beginnings! Ladies of London like to make purchases on credit so she was in debt trying to arrange Gwens wedding trousseau! Robert is immediately drawn to her but thinks she is a deceased Lords ex-mistress so she is easy game! Helaine is initially steadfast in her resistance as Robert tries to wear her down! When Helaine 's past comes to light he realizes she is a Lady actually higher ranking then Gwen! The scandal made her change her name! Robert to me was extremely insensitive to what Helaine wanted he just wanted his way! Helaine was also eaten up with guilt when deciding to become his mistress! Will they get a HEA? You will to read on ...

What a beautiful story so well written the story just flows off the pages.
Helaine thought she would be a spinster all her life after her father ruin their good name by stealing and he was ousted from society.
But along comes Lord Robert who at First wanted her for his mistress not knowing before her fathers disgrace she was known as Lady Helaine but not was earning her living as part owner of a dressmakers shop.
Of course she refused but a friendship blossoms as she is making the dresses for his sisters wedding.

I expect the characters in the modern regency novels I read to reflect contemporary opinions, particularly with regard to women's independence, how women are treated, and relationships between men and women. I found that while I enjoyed the story for this novel, modern attitudes toward premarital sex intruded too much into it for the book to work. If this was a chick lit book set in anywhere after 1975, I wouldn't have had any problem with it whatsoever. In this case, it just didn't work for me. I didn't dislike the novel and I liked both the characters and the ending, but I was left feeling vaguely dissatisfied because it just didn't ring true to the setting.

Sins of the father

One of the things I find most disturbing about this era is the double standard. A son can cover for and fix the sins of his father, but a daughter, even one of the same station, becomes outcast and has to make difficult choices. She is considered "ruined" because of her father's sins. Double standard! Yes, it makes for wonderful conflict for this romance, but it does stir the feminist in me and give me a better appreciation for the era I live in. Overall, an entertaining read as it leaves food for thought.

Wedded in Scandal is a fun period romance about an earl and a dressmaker. The story is entertaining and hard to set down with fun characters and passionate romance.

Contains graphic used scenes.

She is an Earl's daughter but his disgrace was not his alone. His entire family suffered.
He is the son of an irresponsible Earl. From age twelve he had to take on the family burden.
Is it not time he gets what he wants?
A somewhat steamy historical with strong characters and a good story line

I enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more. I was disappointed by the fact that Helene became Robert’s mistress. I like these characters so much and I enjoy Ms. Lee’s writing. I received this book from eBook Discovery. I am voluntarily posting this review. This is my honest review.
