Chris Patchell is an award-winning USA Today Bestselling Author who started writing to curb the homicidal urges she experienced during her Seattle commute. She writes gripping suspense thrillers set in the Pacific Northwest, including bestsellers Deadly Lies, In the Dark, and her most recent collection of small-town crime thrillers, the Lacey James Series. Her writing has won several awards, including a Next Generation Indie Book Award, several Readers’ Favorite Awards, a BookFest Award, an IndieReader Discovery Award, and a Pacific Northwest Literary Award.
When she’s not writing, you can find Chris reading, hanging out with her family, watching football, and struggling to keep up with her workout regime, all while shushing her incessantly yapping Yorkies. She lives in Oregon with her husband and two kids.
Chris Patchell is one of my favorite authors. JUSTICE FOR ALL is one of her slimmer works, but it still manages to pack an emotional punch. In this novella, she goes back in time and tells the story of Elizabeth Holt. Victimized, Holt decides to become a lawyer. The decision costs her marriage to Alistair, who wants her to marry him and be a stay-at-home mom. Instead, she goes to law school and suffers the indignities of sexist professors and a misogynist legal world. But Elizabeth perseveres, determined to find the man who assaulted her, hopefully with the use of new DNA technology. When she comes face to face with her attacker, years later, Elizabeth must decide what to do. What a great read. Hats off to Chris Patchell for another compelling, relevant book. I read this nonstop in one day.
If you like lawyers, evidence, and the condition of "the human condition ", of the victims, detectives and characters in the tale, and a quick satisfying read, you'll Enjoy this
We all Love her character. Now we learn what motivates her and what a story it is! Heart pounding, heart breaking, and completely worth the read! Loved it! Now I need to re-read the Holt Foundation series.
The horror of rape can follow someone through life . Being left for dead is as bad . Elizabeth Holt suffered both, however she decided to fight for justice . Remarkable story .
Justice for All sets up the baseline for the Holt Foundation series - we join Elizabeth Holt in the 1970s as she works her way through law school and into her career as assistant District Attorney in a county in the Northwestern US. Engaged to a wealthy lawyer, Elizabeth is busy with her life seeking justice for strangers and preparing for her marriage in 216 days when she is kidnapped, terrorized and raped, stabbed multiple times and beaten into a coma from which she awakened with a whole new outline for her life. A life that now couldn't include children. But did include a forward-thinking doctor who respected DNA technology even in it's infancy. And for thirteen years she sought justice for others, but she also needed justice for herself. She and her friend, Detective Maxwell Singer. On December 22, 1987 Max had a hit on the DNA in a new rape case in Spokane that tied the perpetrator to Elizabeth's case. Max knew he hadn't quit - they don't - he had just moved. But even now that he was found, Elizabeth couldn't get her old life back. All she could hope for was to be able to find justice for others. That was the story behind the birth of the Holt Foundation. A very fine story it is. I read this story, #8, from the 17 volume medical terror novels published undo the title Do No Harm. REVIEWED on October 15, 2024k, At Goodreads, AmazonSmile, and BookBub. Not available for review on B&N or Kobo.
Really good but way too short. I still would recommend it. If nothing else it explores the world of anger and letting go of its grip of a terror on another human life.
Justice for All A Holt Foundation Story, Book 1 By: Chris Patchell Narrated by: Sara Hannan, Dryw McArthur
There is nothing better than a good suspense filled mystery and Chris Patchell delivers with her first book in the Holt Foundation series. Elizabeth Holt is an ADA. It's not easy breaking into the boys club, but she shows them just what she is made of with each case she wins. Now with a possible lead on a cold case that is way too close to her, she is ready and willing to put this man down. DNA is a new evidence, not always reliable, but if it matches the man she knows it will, she will finally get her closure. Or will she? On the edge with each moment of this book, it's packed with scenes from the past and present. Patchell skillfully weaves a web of suspense as things begin to fall into place. I loved this one, and I can't wait to hear what is going to happen next.
The narration team of Sara Hannan and Dryw McArthur are fabulous as they bring this story alive. They are tuned in to the characters, bringing out the evil, the fear, and the need to find answers. I enjoyed their portrayal of all the different characters and their combined performance.
I don't understand the high ratings for this book. At least the Kindle version has obvious editing errors throughout and the book is short, with insufficient room for good character development. All of that aside, for a book that at times seems to be shoving a message about feminism down your throat, some of the main character's thoughts are awfully anti-feminist (I actually thought the author was male as I was reading it and was surprised to discover afterward that the author is female). The story itself is engaging enough, and the story switching back and forth in the two time periods added a level of suspense, but even that could be confusing because occasionally the dates weren't chronological within the year they were in. I would probably give this book 2 1/2 stars if I could, but since I can't I'm bumping it up to 3 only because it was so short that I only spent 2 hours reading it.
This is such a good book! I love every second and this makes me excited for this series. Ms Holt really brings the nitty gritty to share with us. I was enthralled with her story that goes back and forth from past to present. I really felt for her and her situation. I wanted the best for her and really hoped something would even out for her.
Listening to this I had forgotten the struggles from the 70-80s of women trying to break into the workforce and the general opinion that women are always “asking for it” so they are always responsible. Plus when DNA first came on the scene that it was great. It was also easily discounted because people were still untrustworthy of it.
What I love about the books by this author is that every second is filled with action, suspense and drama. She is one I look forward to her next. I did listen to this on audio. Sara Hannan and Dryw McArthur did a wonderful job bringing out all the emotions of these characters.
One of the things that surprised me in this book was the DNA testing. I didn't even realize DNA was used in the 80's, I first remember hearing about it during the OJ Simpson trial.
Elizabeth is raped in her apartment, but is unable to get justice until 12 years later due to DNA evidence.
The story goes back and forth between the time of the crime and later when Elizabeth is working as an ADA. There's a scene in the hospital between Elizabeth and her rapist's daughter that I found particularly gut wrenching.
What I didn't like about this book is Alistair, Elizabeth's one-time fiance. He treated Elizabeth horribly, and she made so many excuses for him! Taking blame when she shouldn't have, being nice when he certainly didn't reciprocate. She was too easy on him.
A harrowing story of a woman overcoming trauma 5 stars overall, 5 stars story, 5 stars narration
This Holt Foundation series is darker than her Lacey James thriller series. I usually don’t want to read thrillers with a rapist/serial killer, but since the brilliant Chris Patchell wrote this one, I enthusiastically said yes, and I was rewarded with a gripping, emotionally powerful story. Ms. Patchell has such a vibrant writing style that immediately immerses me into the minds of her characters. The author brings a compassionate and nuanced portrait of the grief, trauma, and struggle of a survivor. The heroine is admirable in her tenacity to keep going after tragedy and try to make the world a little better with her wits and hard work. Trigger Warning: although the sexual assault is not described, the knife attack and trauma could be disturbing for readers; mature readers only.
This 3.5-hour-long novella provides a complete and satisfying suspense/thriller that can be read as a standalone. Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Holt became a lawyer to fight for justice for rape victims, after she herself barely survived an attack by a stranger. When new evidence brings to light her attacker’s identity, she remembers all of her awful experiences and struggles with vengeance versus justice.
The pair of narrators were both excellent in every way. The female narrator performed most of the chapters, those from the heroine’s perspective. There were only a few chapters from the perspective of male characters, and the male narrator did a great job on them.
I requested and received a free audio copy via the publisher, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. #TheFlockVIPReviewTeam #NorthernLakeAudio
Elizabeth Holt took the violent rape she went through and decided to become an attorney working to give a voice to victims. They never found the man who brutally raped them stabbed her trying to kill her.But she has become a real hard to beat assistant district attorney. She knew that she couldn't be the stay at home wife that her fiancee wanted so she broke up with him.She still faces him in court an beats him most of the time. This story is deeply moving the characters will leave a lasting impression on you. There are so many twists and turns to this story will keep you riveted until the very last page and leave you begging for more.I love the way this amazing author brings the characters to life before your eyes and makes you feel their emotions and their pain .I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author
She's brutally raped and stabbed repeatedly but somehow survives. What doesn't survive is her engagement because he doesn't understand, and she can't have children. She decides to attend law school and eventually bring justice for women who are raped and murdered. This story goes between the 70's when she's raped and the 80's when they find him. DNA is a new technology ( hard to remember when it sounded like voodoo science instead of long accepted scientific fact). The legal profession wasn't as welcoming to females (RBG, Sandra Day O'Connor) as it is now. She had to fight every single day for her place! It's a sad, tragic story that is all too real for thousands of victims!
Elizabeth Holt is a tough prosecutor...a champion for victims of the vile creatures who choose evil over good. This story breaks your heart for her on one page, then has you cheering for her success on the next. If I were in the victim’s shoes, Elizabeth Holt is who I’d want on my side every time.
JUSTICE FOR ALL is a consuming read that held me captive until I finished it. Ms. Patchell’s writing is so smooth, it allows the characters to take center stage and captivate the reader on page one. I will be reading every book she writes (or has written) from now on!
There’s a stocker, a verdict and a Christmas party and that’s just the beginning of the story. This book is so good you will wonder why haven’t you heard of this before? Downloaded two more books by this author. This can be read in one sitting, but make no mistake it is packed with action. If you like thrillers, drama and action you would love this book. Those aren’t even my favorite genres and I loved this book! Just make sure you have a couple of hours to read it, because he grabbed you at the beginning and doesn’t let go until it’s over and that is why I gave it five stars. Totally deserves it!
Chris Patchell’s short book, Justice for All, tells the story of Elizabeth Holt, prosecuting Attorney, and her fight for justice, not just for the victims of violent crimes, but also her own as told through flashbacks. In a era when women were just beginning to venture into predominantly male careers, Holt becomes a lawyer after her own brutal tape and near death. After losing everything, including her fiancé, she recreates herself, but never gets the closure she needs until 13 years later and rather unexpectedly. Patchell’s right writing and passion for her subject makes this a good read.
Loved the dual narration of Sara Hannan and Dryw McArthur
Elizabeth Holt, was once a victim, but this made her determined to become a lawyer. A decision that her husband is not happy about, he wants a stay at home wife and mum. But Elizabeth goes to law school and deals with sexist professors and a male dominate world. Elizabeth is determined to find the man who assaulted her, hopefully with the use of new DNA technology. Many years later Elizabeth comes face to face with her attacker, she must decide what to do.
Elizabeth Holt's character grows throughout this story! By being a victim , her obsession changes the course of her life. She becomes a strong independent woman , a lawyer fighting for other victims of abuse. She gets a call regarding her cold case. Will justice finally be served? This story is a suspenseful mystery I enjoyed listening to. Sara Hannan and Dryw McArthur narration is very good. They are new narrators for me and looking forward for more audios from each. #The Flock On Tour #PFP Production
Audiobook: This was my first experience with Chris Patchell's work, and the story was riveting. Elizabeth Holt was physically attacked, and it changed her life. The subject matter was emotional. The societal norms which were presented were both thought-provoking and anger inspiring. Elizabeth Holt as a character was memorable and strong. Sara Hannan's and Dryw McArthur's dual narrations were good, and their performances enhanced the story's message. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review which included my opinions.
Elizabeth Holt decides to become a lawyer after she has been victimized. Choosing this path leads her on a thrilling and heart wrenching journey to seeking justice and regaining her personal strength. The book is exhilarating in its realism. Every character has a depth that's refreshing in a genre that has seen too many shortcomings on character development. The plot has enough twists to keep you reading and excited to do so. I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series!
In the genre of Jodi Picolt, one thing changes Elizabeth’s life forever and she has choices to make. She chooses to be strong and use her talents to help others without ever telling anyone of her personal tragedy. Early DNA, women treated as inferior, rape victims treated as provocative.... Issues that we hoped had changed but see that nothing has changed as much as we need it to! I received this book for free but happily reviewed it as I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was an awesome read. A lawyer who was brutalized earlier in her life deals with the repercussions of that event. The end of a engagement and always hoping to find out about her attacker. The cop who caught her case continues to keep her updated. She wanted to be a lawyer to help people, especially victims like her. In this very interesting story you will fell what she feels and swear you are right thee in the story with her. Well worth the time.
ADA Elizabeth Holt is prosecuting cases when she gets a call about a past case. One she was the “survivor” and then we learn a lot about what made her into the strong woman she is now. This audio was good and kept my attention but was over too soon. I will have to follow up with the rest of the series to find out what exactly happens. It wasn’t a cliff hanger per say but it left me wanting to know more.
This one is not my normal but wow it was an amazing book. This one has you on the edge of your seat the entire book. Elizabeth, the main FMC, is an amazing woman. As the store is revealed, my heart went out to her and how her life path altered over time. This is a short listen/read so I won't say any more but it is definitely worth the listen/read. Both narrators are new to me as well as the author. I would most definitely listen to them again and read more of the author's work.
This powerful tale is a fantastic start to a new series! As a college student Elizabeth Holt is violently attacked in her home. This story is filled with much drama and action. The characters are well drawn and believable. The writing and narration are top notch. Highly recommended! I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
Was a bit disappointed at the numbering suggestions of Ms. Patchell's "Jolt Foundation" books as they were totally misleading so as to direct one to "Justice for all" as book 1 (which it was) an interesting story, giving us the people - Marissa, Elizabeth, Evan, Alistair, Brooke and Kelly to name the main characters not to forget Seth. Getting to know these people made the stories more interesting.
Get the tissues ready and settle down with this great book. You will not want to put it down. A college girl is viscously raped and this book details her journey for justice. It takes 13 years, her fiancé, her ability to have children and changes her goals in life.
I loved it. I couldn't put it down. A story about rape and how it affects the lives of the victims, especially if their attacker never stands trial for their crimes. This story had believable characters and a strong story line. I would recommend this book. I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.
Sweet beautiful Elizabeth has everything going for her , she’s going to college, engaged and and saving her innocence for her wedding night . This story is tragic and yet Elizabeth keeps fighting for justice for victims. I’ve got to read the next installment, this Author is amazing !!
This story gave me chills and kept me totally engrossed. After Lizzie's brutal rape her life is never the same. She becomes a successful and hard driving attorney but her hope is to have the rapists caught and see justice done. It has been years so is it even possible? You will stay on the edge contour chair as you read this awesome book.
