In Deed and in Truth

Rate this book
Lillian Rose Atkins is tired. She's tired of picking cotton, serving as a maid in a hotel, and taking care of her younger cousins. So when she receives an invitation from the mother she hasn't seen in ten years to move to Chicago and take part in Chicago society, Lily jumps at the chance. This is her opportunity to finally have new things, be on the other side of service, and find a wealthy husband.

Rutledge "Rudy" Addison is tired. As an investigative journalist who reports on the facts of lynchings and race riots in the South, he's tired of dealing with the dregs of society. But when he is challenged to love those he is starting to hate, he begins to find that life is not as black-and-white as he always thought.

When Lily and Rudy are thrown together, will they realize that maybe the things they're tired of are more important than they could ever have fathomed?

I still remember the exact day I fell in love with reading. It was nighttime and raining. Mom and Dad had already sent me and my sister to bed. But I couldn't sleep. We didn't have cable (and I'm pretty sure the parents wouldn't allow it) and cartoons were over for the day. I remember turning on the light, looking across the room at my snoring sister and then at my bookcase filled with books. I wasn't a reader at the time, but my mother was. She was constantly buying me something. I walked over to the bookshelf and pulled my newest book off the shelf and just began to read. For the first time, I learned what it was to leave my room and go someplace else; to care about imaginary people so much, I had to turn the next page; to get so caught up in a story, hours flew by. And it is that exact feeling that I want so much to create in my readers. Enjoyment, entertainment, and feeling blessed.

God is good all the time.

This is another good book written by this author. I have read several of her books so far and I truly enjoyed them. Mainly I like the biblical scriptures she uses and the historical history of the times she is writing about. Some of it hurts and makes me sad as to how our brothers and sisters were treated. I also enjoy the romantic parts as well. It would seem that opposites attract in some of her stories. I look forward to reading many more of this authors books. Her books bring a Godly, historical genuineness and love to the characters. I have also reread her book A Quiet Hope and will reread some others. Please keep writing these books as I look forward to reading more of them.

This was such a good book. So much classism among Black people. I’m not sure I was expecting that. One thing that’s been on my mind though is Rudy and why he was considered such a “great catch” among these supposed elites. My conclusion was that it wasn’t his profession—he was a journalist (though respectable, not a high paying job). It might have been because of his skin color. He was handsome, but looked more white than “Negro.” I’m not sure the ladies who were after him would admit it, but that’s my two cents. I wish there was a sequel or a spin off because I really liked reading about these characters.

Enjoyed Reading this Book..

I loved and enjoyed reading this book about a Black Man passing as White to get information on race riots and lynchings against Blacks in the United States.
But, once I got to the end the story, it felt rushed and left me wanting more. Before it ended sooooo quickly..

Never intended...

Never have I been interested in historical novels. This author has helped me to change my thinking! I first read a sample of the Anthea Gibson story and now I am hooked. I believe that I am now on my fourth book and looking for the next!

I love this book: the characters, the plot, the spiritual lessons, the history... I couldn't put it down.
