Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

The story gets rolling in this one and the new Naruto/Sasuke rivalry is born through Boruto and Kawaki. Kawaki doesn’t seem to be as full on nasty as Sasuke but we’ll see how long that lasts. I liked getting to see even if it was just to settle Kawaki down. I’m definitely not a fan of the villain, though. I don’t like any of the group so far. They’re all very edgy.

**If you download the Shonen Jump reading app, you have access to hundreds of stories on a chapter to chapter basis; so, although this one isn't out in the states yet, I'm all caught up through what Japan has released. The best $2 I've ever spent :)

I love this so much more than I ever thought I would. It's thrilling, and the artwork is simply stunning. I'll be updating my blog about this!

I really enjoyed this one. The mark on Boruto's hand is called Karma and this one of the things we learn from Koji Kashin. He can use Rasengan, summons a toad, and has white hair...Yet, his behaviour is nothing like Jiraiya. So, there is something going about this man but we still don't know it yet. This is also the volume Kawaki is introduced. He is basically Sasuke, powerful, annoying, and cold. The ending was good and I'm interested in Kawaki and this whole Karma/Kara thing.

Ahh yes. I knew this story was missing something since Sasuke mellowed out. Meet Kawaki, the new edgelord of this Naruto continuation. If his attitude wasn’t clue enough, his backstory is dark enough to be worthy of a D&D rogue.

Honestly, I kinda like him. He evens out the story by providing internal conflict, whereas most of this story is external conflict. I will say it feels like they rushed into his ‘dark past reveal’ but it does leave out enough that you want to know more.

This series has 20 volumes.

*7+/10* I like it.

What It’s About?

Kawaki, the boy discovered on the last mission, lives with Naruto.

How I Discovered It

I just reserved the series all at once.

Thoughts

Kawaki seems like Great Value Sasuke. I like his journey with Naruto and the household. While I find him annoying, his behavior is response to trauma at the hands of Kara. The toilet humor was funny. Right before I saw the text, my thought was, “Why ya’ll peeing so close together?” As we meet more of the Kara, I am still unimpressed. They are Great Value Akatsuki so far.

Who would like it?

People who are into shonen manga and anime.

Di questo volume ho amato tre cose:

1) la carne che viene messa al fuoco circa il guscio e lo strano simbolo che ha anche Boruto;

2)l’incontro-scontro tra quest’ultimo e il misterioso Kawaki (con tanto di rimandi al rapporto tra Naruto e Sasuke da adolescenti);

Chapter 25: Look closely, Delta. Seems like he's just as able.

Chapter 25: No mistake. The two karmas were definitely resonating with each other. Is this why Jigen is so obsessed with Kawaki? I need more intel...

Chapter 25: You could say his very existence is a scientific ninja tool.

Chapter 25: Soon, whether it wants to or not, the world shall learn the name and fearsomeness of Kara.

Chapter 26: I'm a jinchuriki, remember? Back when Kurama inside my belly was feared as the nine-tailed fox demon. I might have been thrown in confinement too If old man third hadn't defended me.

A nice mix of action and comedy. I think the new kid is deffo gonna spice up this series.

The first two chapters provide a lot of action involving the mark Boruto and Kawaki share. Kawaki is powerful and kinda stubborn. Without spoiling anything, he makes angsty teenage Sasuke look friendly. Boruto and Kawaki’s equally rebellious attitudes certainly bring back a similar vibe to the Naruto-Sasuke relationship, and plenty of humour.

One of my favourite parts was the time spent in the Uzumaki home. Naruto’s presence strengthens the dynamic, and for once we get to see his role as a father and not just Hokage. He even reminded me of Minato.

While the action in the first half was great, the more chilled out, comedic scenes of the latter half were just what this series needed, bathroom scenes and all 😉

Also, don’t ya just love it when Mitsuki drops big news so calm 🤣

[This review covers Volumes 7-8 since I read them in one go]

Boruto and co. investigate the unconscious youth, only to find a clue to the mystery of Kara and Karma - a clue that wants to punch them in the face. And then, back in the Hidden Leaf, two agents of Kara infiltrate with only ill intentions on their minds.

Fun times. Nice art. Having someone that annoys Boruto as much as he annoys everyone else is pretty hilarious at times. I'm surprised by how much Naruto is in this, considering he's not meant to be the main character anymore, but sure.

The mystery of Kara continues, with a few little tidbits revealed in some flashbacks, but for the most part it's still fairly obscure. I can't remember how long it took before we knew what the Akatsuki were after in the original, but I feel like we got it right after we found out who they were during the whole Deidara/Gaara thing, so a long-standing mystery feels new.

So I reneged on my promise to myself to stop reading Boruto because it just wasn't worth it, but I've been inspired by some recent news that allegedly Boruto, both the manga and the anime, are on the up and up again so I figured I might as well carry on with the manga since the new tonkobon was coming out and I am not going to invest any time into the anime.

I am back to promising myself to stop reading this manga.

The biggest problem I have with Boruto as a whole is the lack of originality. Kawaki is a Sasuke clone, the Karma mark thing is a curse mark knockoff; even Kawaki's use as a vessel echoes Orochimaru's original intent to use Sasuke's body as a host during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc. I've read this all before and it was better in the original. Nothing in Boruto improves on the original Naruto storyline, nor does it create anything new and exciting for me.

Another good volume. I really like Kawaki, he's really strong and has a weird ability. He can manipulate his body which is an ability we've seen before with Obito and the Hashirama cells. What's really interesting is that Kawaki's karma and Boruto's karma can synchronise. You can see that when they are fighting Garo, Kawaki uses the fire jutsu that Boruto absorbed in the last volume.

In Boruto's house I like that Masashi Kishimoto decided to make Kawaki live with Boruto. I think it's going to be able to make the 2 with karma seals a lot closer. What's the most interesting is Kawaki's backstory. He said that Jigen collected about 20 kids and tried to give them karma, but when he did most of the kids died except for Kawaki. It makes me wonder why he was the only one to survive.
