Readers of Andrew Sean Greer's Less and The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave may enjoy Suicide By Ghost, a novella featuring found families, humor, and queer characters finding their way.
Rose Sinclair is an trans bi community leader who started with a blog in 2013. The biggest noise maker they spearheaded was a protest in 2015 that made GLADD step up for the wider LGBTQIA+ community, paving the way for future acceptance of those communities and on-screen TV representation. Before becoming a full-time writer, they popularized several community terms, and set up a decentralized support system with a “Dear Abby” style approach. They are the author of HELLO WORLD, organizer of community projects such as UNBURIED FABLES, and now write a steamy BIG BAD MAGIC SERIES.
[Edit 22/11/19:] Everyone's screaming about Queen of Nothing but read this while your waiting! (which I still am, can you tell?)

A novella about a ghost hunter and two kids on a road trip, hunting ghosts. It doesn't have much of a plot exactly - more like side missions, where the main plot is finding family.
There is no suicide or self harm in this book, so if your triggered by that, you don't have to worry!
The other main thing throughout this book is how it balances LGBTQ+ issues with religion. I thought this was handled as an issue incredibly well
Ryan: trans man, and former exorcist turned freelance ghost hunter
Andrew: Runaway from his home after coming out to his parents, and finds himself working with Ryan
Rebecca: Lesbian, and wants to play music outside of her family's band
I absolutely love found family, they all come together out of necessity and stay together because they can to hunt ghosts!
I thought this was a really good novella. The characters are great! Just a road trip with 3 people in a truck trying to work out if ghosts are real or not.
Trigger and Content Warnings: The author did a very thoughtful post on her Tumblr about the triggers, but the gist is: off page homophobia, talk of transphobia, homelessness
I was provided an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review of this book
TW: There is no suicide in the book, but there is frank discussion of homo/transphobia
Potential spoiler alert, but this book left me with feelings of contentness, optimism, and hope, which I was not expecting. I was honestly expecting spookiness with a side of found family. What I got was found family with a side of questioning religion/paranormal. And it was great.
Rose always has a way of making queer characters without the book BEING about queer characters. That pattern continues in Suicide by Ghost, which has a trans, gay, and lesbian found family. Even though this book focuses more on their queer identities, the book is not *just* about Queer Pain ™ and has a rich story about hunting ghosts and trying to find balance between religion, self expression, and the paranormal.
One of my favorite things about this book is you feel like you’re experiencing just a chapter of the characters’ lives. We pick up in Ryan’s life with him going on a job; it feels like this is just the beginning of another chapter for him and it leaves the ending open, so you know they are going to continue traveling and growing their found family.
This is a quick read that you will love if you’re looking for something that features visibly queer characters and found family dynamics.
I can't believe someone was able to actually come up with this book. The authors are literally the brightest people in the world to bring this amazing book together. It's a book that needs to be celebrated all around the world. Loved it!
DNF I started reading this fir the Ace Race, the asexuality readathon. Since it's October, I wanted to just read fiction that's... seasonal, like ghosts and such. This one is about an exorcist and presumably about ghosts. But Xianity, Xianity, Xianity, so no, thanks.
A very fun read!! I loved Ryan, he was super cool to read about, and the plot was entertaining and cute! I have to admit the premise SOLD me and I really enjoyed the talk about religion and ghosts and being queer. I only wish there was more!!
I can’t remember when I got this novella. The PDF has been on my e-reader for a while, and I finally had a moment to read it on a plane ride recently.
I really didn’t have much of a reaction to Suicide by Ghost. I feel neither particularly positively nor negatively about it. It just… exists. The characters just exist. The situation just exists. There’s them, and there’s the road, and there may or may not actually be ghosts. There’s definitely Christianity, and it was to a certain degree interesting to get a glimpse into this world of the church that I really don’t have any experience with at all, but I felt that another reader who had some real connection to this world (and the experience of leaving the church because of homophobia) would get a lot more out of it than I did. So I’m in the odd position of not disliking it enough to rate this book negatively and not liking it enough to rate it positively, leaving me right in the middle.
A cute little found family ghost hunting story, although it's really a bit too slice of life for me personally and I found myself wishing for a more urgent plot once I realized that about halfway through. Still, it's a very quick read and has some parts that I think would be comforting to queer people who are still religious.
