The Call comes with a heavy price.

For centuries, shifters have managed to keep their lineage a secret. But their numbers grow smaller and smaller with every generation and it is the Alpha's duty to Call the shifters back home so that they might rebuild their numbers.

However, the barbarians of the Storm Isles and the cruel Kings of the Cerith nation will learn of their secret. The Alpha must choose: the death of his people or risk war.

Prince Tristan Rolf's entire life was laid out for him from the moment of his birth. He was born an Alpha Prince, destined to carry on his family name and legacy.

But Tristan's heart, and fate, have other plans.

Bennet Goldbow grew up under the protection of the royal family. The first time he met Prince Tristan, they forged a friendship that would carry them through wars and heartbreak. As the years pass, Bennet's love and admiration for the Prince become something more. He knows his feelings for his close friend are unrequited but when he is gifted with magic, another possibility presents itself.

As the dangers grow and the stakes become higher than they could imagine, will Bennet and Tristan be able to keep peace in their lands?

This read was truly fantastic! The Calling is a wonderful Young Adult/New Adult Fantasy and M/M PNR novel. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like it and I mean that in the best way possible. I’m not sure how Marquez managed to fit so much into such a short novel. Tristan is an alpha prince/shifter who is working on taking over the kingdom from his father. Bennet is a human friend of Tristan’s that grows up to be much more valuable than you would guess at first glance. The relationship between them is slow burn and wonderful to see develop. While the story is told in 3rd person we still get to see each characters POV which I really enjoyed. This story is not a standalone and does continue in book 2, The Legacy. I’m definitely reading that, I loved the characters and the story and am intrigued to see where Marquez takes us next.

Art is subjective. Personal and varied. And yet for any time of discussion to be had, to judge and to classify and give out awards, a certain amount of objectivity was made to enter this sacred realm where beautiful and awful are both something you and you alone define.

I appreciate these values, the ability to look at a book as one can look at a beautiful building - not just with the intent to appreciate but also with the posibility to quantify and put a name to what would otherwise be outside of our abilities to write about. It makes it possible - more than anything - to talk about all these fickle ideas, about the experience art gives us, even if words are, ironically, often poor tool to describe our feelings.

Art has been taken by the numbers - now you can give a number to your experience, you can see how much did it cost of time or money, how many people viewed it and liked it. You can compare and put them into boxes and you can judge.

And yet art is and always will be in the eye of the beholder, who, maybe not recognized, will still have the ultimate power to complete the most simply circle - of the author and the one who can appreciate their work.

I would be lying if I said this book could be universally liked (and yes, I believe some books are like that). There are not as many of those objective values I try to find in books to call them truly magnificent.

Oh but a heart and a soul - they are what makes art what it is and they should have the final say, more than any numbers and facts.

The characters were lovely. The plot should have been boring, it was great. The romance was like a wind, invisible but present, and I adored it.

In other words, I am not sure how many people could like this - so I am not sure how confidently I can recommend this - and I do not care.

This was amazing and I want more and this is a fantasy gay YA/NA romance about werewolves and I do not know but I do believe that if this sounds good, you should absolutely give this book a chance.

This book was exactly what I needed, especially with everything around us being so crazy and with being stuck in quarantine I need to be transported to another land.

This book takes place in a world where there's magic and creatures exist that we have only heard of in stories. This book is a fantastical story of politics, loyalty and love... and the love is a very slow burning thing, but I really like the build up.

There are many characters: friends and family of the 2 main protagonists, but I like each of them and they all have their own personalities and add to the story.

Thank goodness I have book 2 ready to go because this ended very abruptly and it would have been torture having to wait to find out what happens next.

Good Stuff

The world building is great and I love all the characters in Tristen’s and Bennet’s circle. It’s an exciting read for the politics, royal drama, and sci-fi. The HH relationship is on a SLOW burn, but the feelings are genuine. I’m just want a kiss or something LOL. There was some editing errors but not enough to be annoying. Anyways, can’t wait to pick up the next book.
