“You have no idea what you are yet, Hadrack, but someday you will, and on that day the world itself will tremble.” - Einhard, Sword of the King
A year has passed since the Piths captured the Gander garrison at Gasterny. A year in which an unexpected and unwanted truce has been declared between the two nations. For Hadrack of Corwick, now eighteen and a scarred veteran of battle, the waiting has become intolerable. Caught between his need to fulfill his vow to his murdered family and his sworn oath to the man who freed him, Hadrack can only sit back in growing frustration as he waits impatiently for a war that will not come. Then one morning while out on patrol in the forests behind the garrison, Hadrack makes a grisly discovery that sets off a chain of events that will change the lives of everyone he knows. The war Hadrack has been wishing for has finally come to Gasterny, but, as he will soon come to realize, sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.
Terry Cloutier, the bestselling author of the Wolf of Corwick Castle series, The First Emperor series, and The Past Lives Chronicles, is currently writing a stand-alone time travel novel called A Picture in Time, scheduled for release in fall 2025. Following that, he plans to begin work on the tenth book in the Wolf of Corwick series, titled The Wolf at Bay. Terry resides in Canada with his wife and their two dogs. You can contact Terry through Facebook or Goodreads; he'd love to hear from you.
In book #2 Hadrack as a old man sits an writes his life's story. How he comes to fights for the Mothers House. He gathers young outlaws to help him in his cause . He still is able to go after the nine one by one. Saves the women he loves. He writes his story so you know the truth. He cares not what you might think of him. "If I write my life's story does that give you the right to judge me? Look at your own life then judge me not".
With one great leap our hero was free. Well, that's how it seemed to me. Hadrack meandered from one impending disaster to the next but, somehow, fate always took a hand and led him to safety. Not that he is a likeable hero, more of a bad tempered and single minded brute. A killer without remorse. But then this is a fast moving, page turning adventure and we can forgive him anything just as long as he keeps killing the bad guys. Well recommended!
This book tells the tale of how the Wolf found four of the nine men who killed his family. He has become a feared outlaw and with his selected few men terrorized the countryside while looking for the men on the list. A fast paced story for everyone.
A rousing sequel to Terry Cloutier’s “ The Nine” , “ The Wolf at Large” will not disappoint his readers ( or anyone else, for that matter.) The adventures of Hadrack, former slave in the dreaded limestone quarries from which few were freed except in death, continue. At the beginning of this sequel in the hard- edged military fantasy he is man at arms serving the king’s enmities, the Piths. They had raided the country and freed the quarry slaves in a bloody battle . Hadrack had sworn fealty to their leader, and now, with the forces of the kingdom at the gates, it was time to fight. The issue is never in doubt as they face overwhelming numbers in led by Hadrack’ s old , hated enemy, The Earl of Corwick, the man responsible for killing Hadrack’s family and everyone else in the village. The battle , as with all combat in the book, is told in bloody and gory detail, plenty of guts and not much glory, at least not for Hadrack, who.... Well, there is a sequel to and excellent series, and I recommend that you read the series for the fun and exciting continuation of the adventures of Hadrack the Wolf. The author has a fascinating character in Hadrack , and he continues to give him depth and a story world that expands to new adventures. Cautions: as noted above, this is a sword and steel military a la Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon books. Fantasy novel lovers should be aware that I have found not hint of mages, elves or dragons in these books. Only the fact that it takes place in a fictional world places it in the fantasy genre.
Went right into this after "The Nine" and I'm glad I did. Seeing Hadrack's character develop into a more confident leader was satisfying in itself, but I felt in this one the plot lines felt very "fantasy tropesque". The love at first sight with his future wife. Convenient death of the woman he was seeing before that reunion, and his "merry band" were all conveniently good after all, even though they were robbing and murdering in the woods before he found them.
I'll definitely finish the Trilogy, hope it has more surprises as the debut novel! Love that Bernard Cornwell, and Uhtred are his inspiration!

The story was good kept up the momentum of its predecessor. However, as common in sequels the feeling being rushed and less thoroughly edited raised its head. That said and since it isn't a paper to be graded, the tale makes one hope for further development. After all there are still more of the nine to be accounted for. Good work!
I do enjoy a good yarn. I have spun a few to my charges in scouting adventures. A flickering campfire, hot chocolate and Smores offered a attentive audience. No matter how outrageous the scenario I could sense the focus of minds open to the yarn. Mr. Courier manages to coax my imagination to suspend my tenuous grasp of reality most of the time. Hadrack has faults and flaws that derail those about him similarly affected making the line between good vs bad behavior wonderfully scewed. One scene brought me back to a reality check when the murder of the Prince at the hand of the priest describes the act of cutting the throat then positioning the body so as to make it appear he was sleeping. It is well known that this act creates a tremendous and immediate release of blood so the evidence would be difficult if not impossible to cover up in short order. I know, I know! Picky, picky! However this pathetic perspective I believe supports the argument for great tale spinning Mr. Cloutier gives us. My audience would have overlooked similar blemishes as dragons devoured armored knights, beautiful princesses morphed into Amarillo or the moon kissed the sea. Good read. Bring on another.
See title above. I'm 75 and still learning to navigate. My apologies for the world's longest title which was held I think by "Everything You Wanted to Know about Sex but Were afraid to Ask", I'm probably wrong but don't really care.
A believable story in an invented world with appealing characters
A relaxing read, This is the second of a series of books that relates the coming of age of a young peasant boy who traumatized by witnessing the slaughter of his his family. & villages. The story is related first person as reminiscences from late in life, which adds a more reflective, mature perspective to the work.
I’d initially hesitated, suspecting the series to be a gory dystopian tale. I was mistaken. Although there is some somewhat graphic combat scenes, the work is well balanced . The plot & characters are introduced , in a different setting , from The Nine, the first volume. of The Nine ( first volume) w more to be released.
I can't say enough about this story. The characterization is superb, you just can't help to feel you Truely know these characters. Whether you like them or not, somebody from this story will stay with you. Plenty of action and a realistic storyline makes this a true gem. There's a few twists and turns that break away from traditional fantasy which keeps everything fresh. Great writing and a good story pace makes the pages fly by. Eagerly awaiting the next installment.
Terry Cloutier congratulations on another job well done! As I said in my other review of book 1 you rank with the best and that includes Bernard Cornwell! This book did not fail just keep them coming!
I love your writing style and the development of the characters. Like the first book I couldn't put it down! I am enjoying how the young boy in book 1 is growing up in book 2 still young and living with his decisions but he's maturing and thinking I can't wait for book 3 to see him as a man, one to reckon with.
Once again another book that keeps you reading into the wee hours because, well, it's a ripping yarn and you really want to find out what happens next.
If you want a book that transports you, this is it. The description and imagery are excellent, the characters are 3 dimensional, warts and all, even the broody teenager angst of the MC isn't hidden at all. I really hope he develops a bit of self control but from the querulous tone as he narrates the tale i think I'm going to be disappointed.
This is for the first three books in the set, the author may add more because Hadrack is not finished. These are very well researched, the details seem to be authentic. The story is fast paced with enough detail and character development to give it substance. The writing is terrific! The author admits he didn't have the end in mind when he started, so it does meander a little bit, not as well put together as the game of thrones series, but similar content. I thought they were well worth my time!
The Wolf at Large is a fitting continuation to “The Nine” ! Looking forward to Book 3 . Both of these tales have interesting, believable characters, convincing storyline and are well written. So happy I stumbled across the tales of Terry Cloutier. Highly recommended reading.
I like stories to immerse me so that I can forget about the daily gloomy news. These 2 books have done just that. Cracking pace. A tale of good ( well sometimes quite good!) triumphing over evil. Descriptions of individual fights and wider battle scenes very vivid. Thoroughly enjoyed and look forward to the next instalment.
I loved the first book in this series but for some reason reading this book felt like I was rewatching the TV show "The Last Kingdom" again. If you've watched the Last Kingdom TV Show, you'll understand what i'm talking about. This book lacked originality. I've kinda lost interest in continuing the series because i feel like i already know what's going to happen in the end.
This is a great continuation from book 1 and full of action and intrigue. This story is a complete story, but will continue in another Audible book. I like that a man of low birth can accomplish much just by streght of will and fortitude. Narration was well done and definitely help make the story Riveting!
A good story and well written. I’m a little bummed I found these books right now. I like to discover a new author and new series when it’s done then just binge read them. I guess I’ll have to wait. Impatiently. Looking forward to the next one!
If you like knights, fantasy and romance this is a fun read. And what is rare you can feel the author’s joy as he weaves his tale to an end that leaves you hoping for the Wolf of Corwick to complete his story in a 3rd book.
I really enjoy when I stumble upon a good book specially when it's a free book from Amazon prime reading. Though I would have bought it if need be. Looking forward to the next book.
If you enjoyed The Nine you will be even more drawn into the exploits of The Wolf in this follow up story. Personally I can't wait for "the fall" and the third part of this thrilling saga.
The characters tell a story that you want to read to the end. I would get the first book and read them get the second book and read it then wait for the next book.
A fast paced follow up like his earlier book it is set in a fictional background but with echoes of real history. A very enjoyable journey if a little over simple for the hero in the after such a violent early reverse.
Enjoyed this book, funny I was unaware that the character a kin to Bardard Cornwalls Ultrage. Mainly because I did have him in my mind to whilst reading the book. On to the next book now.
A very easy to read page turner. Almost everyone else manages to get slaughtered but our hero has a charmed life. Somehow in every dark moment someone will come to his rescue. It's an excellent book for a rainy day, action filled and very enjoyable.
I took a chance on The Nine because of the 99p offer and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the story and the writing. As soon as I finished that book I bought this one and read it immediately. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Goos book and I enjoyed it for what it was, but I felt it lacked something? I like some sort of story rather than just seeking justice and retribution for the death of his family. More story line would of been nice.
This story keeps getting better and better. In this second volume of the series, the characters and relationships deepen as the action continues to build as the Wolf pursues his vow.
Hadrack's story continues and does not disappoint. Plenty of action. intrigue and story development in Book #2. I love to read stories of an author who can bring you into the stories.
Terrific fantasy series with an abundance of interesting characters in a no-holds-barred action packed story of intrigue, duplicity and treachery, but also honor, friendship and love.
Blistering pacing, neck jarring events, deceptions and truths revealed. Terry Cloutier continues to excel in this strongly written series. You have my attention sir, well done. Onto the next.
