All Steve wanted was to tell the girl of his dreams how he felt about her.
Today was that day. A day engineered with no distractions. A day for just the two of them. No roommates. No cowardice. No second-guessing that the friendship they'd built over the last year wasn't more.
Today was the day his hellish existence would move into the light.
It shouldn't be possible for everything to change so fast. That from one second to the next, he could go from steering his own future to watching it crash down around him.
The secret experiment he'd been blackmailed into working on with his best friend, Ray, had bled into his real life. They'd promised each other that despite all the horrid things they had to endure, despite all the awful things they forced onto others, they would not bring their messed-up lives home.
But when the last of their human subjects died, they were out of options.
Roped into kidnapping the love of his life, Steve's moment of bliss turns nightmare. Each day more torturous than the last, he watches his love, induced coma keeping her asleep, wondering what it is they're inflicting on her. Always secret, Steve wished he'd tried harder to understand what it was they were doing in the lab. He wished he knew what the experiment was doing to her.
When she wakes, when she finally comes to, the first ever to survive, Steve wants to take it all back. The nightmare he'd been living was nothing compared to this.
Created in a vat far from this world, C.M. Martens was sent to watch over this plane, to observe and witness the human condition. Discontent with simple observation, she's chosen to morph this reality into her own image through the written word. Supplied with coffee, sweets, and an endless supply of Trance and Chill electronic music (mixed with some video game soundtracks) C.M. Martens hopes to lead you on an adventure through the pages of her novels.

A love story, science experiment, girlfriend turning horrifically vicious and chaos everywhere sums this prequel up. Not to mention the stress inducing anxiety it created for me. The Frankenstein lover in me truly loved this book that reeked havoc in my brain. Reading this felt like I was watching a brand new episode of a new series on SyFy. Definitely suspenseful and positively looking forward to the next book in this series. The author also listed songs at the end of the book that matched the vibe of the book. Great pairing!
Loved this prequel to the fool's path journey! Suspenseful and fast moving, the dark intrigue kept me hooked.
What a great insight into Dee's beginnings. I couldn't help feeling for Steve and the nightmare situation he was in, wondering how far he'd go, or whether he'd draw a line... you'll have to read it to see!
"Steve wanted to scream, gripped by the depth of depravity they'd fallen to. The bleat of misery that sounded in his head at their apartment reverberated in his head again, and again, he was shocked the world didn't react to the forlorn sound."
This is actually a prequel to the Rishi’s Wish series and I was told by the author that the best time to read it was before starting book three in the series, so that is what I did.
My heart breaks for her friend Steve who was helplessly and hopelessly in love with her and too chicken to tell her. As he and friend Ray were involved in some interesting experiments that had to do with genetic modification/ manipulation, it only concluded that they would bring their two friends Dee and Kim in as test subjects. All the other test subjects had died and Steve was really upset about using Dee for this treatment.
The serum that the girls had been given eventually worked on Dee and that is when all hell breaks loose.
Wild and crazy story but really answered a lot of questions from the first two books in the series, so now I feel a little more in tune with how Dee became the person she is now. I will be diving into book three in the near future. Highly recommend this series. Dee’s story is still unfolding and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.
I absolutely love the cover of this book because it really drew me to it. It left me wanting to see what the book was about. This book is a real page turner. The story line is great and I love how you get all the little details of how Ray and Steve got to where they are. This story line is very out of the box, which makes it more intriguing and really pulls you in. It keeps you interested and you find yourself reading more. I want to learn more about these experiments. You find yourself wanting to figure out how Ray and Steve got stuck in this situation.
I looooved this so much and definitely lost some sleep to it as a result. The suspense was unreal! It answered some questions and makes me want to re-read the series to see how it changes my perspective. Once again, Martens does a fantastic job with the action scenes. Highly recommend, especially if you've read the others
Seriously heart wrenching and a tug to all the emotions. So relatable in the greatest of ways! Learning the origins of Dee will make re-reading the series that much more intriguing.
