Did you know that Jane Austen wrote prayers in addition to her six classic novels? She was not only a woman of celebrated humor, intellect, and insight; she was a woman of faith. Prayer & Praise is a treasure trove of thought-provoking messages inspired by the lines of Austen’s three preserved prayers. Atop a solid foundation of scripture, these 50 devotional segments (each finishing with prayer and praise) enlist familiar characters and situations from Austen novels to illustrate spiritual principles – in creative, often surprising, ways! Which one of Austen’s characters developed a god complex? Who was really pulling Henry Crawford’s strings? Where do we see examples of true repentance, a redeemer at work, light overcoming darkness? With a Biblical perspective, Austen’s beloved stories reveal new lessons about life, truth, hope, and faith.
I was privileged to read an early copy of this devotional, and it was an absolute delight. Shannon Winslow had searched into the personal prayers of Jane Austen to highlight the Biblical truths understood by the beloved Lady. She parallels these with characters of Jane Austen's invention, highlighting the very traits and actions detailed in the Scripture selections and prayers.
This was a rich reading experience, as it spoke on multiple levels. Exquisitely researched and carefully accurate, this work does not presume new wisdom, as is so often the way with modern devotionals. Rather, it gently walks the reader through ancient principles in a way that speaks to both the mind of the twenty-first century and the lover of all things Austen.
I will be reading this again and again, and I plan to give one to many of my relatives and friends.
This is the third Jane Austen devotional that I’ve read and enjoyed. It breaks down Jane’s three surviving prayers with supporting examples from her novels. The author shows great insight into Austen’s writing with Biblical truths to back it up. An excellent devotional and one I’m sure I’ll read again.
Three known prayers of Jane Austen are broken down phrase by phrase into 50 devotional thoughts. Examples from the prayer phrases are drawn from the characters she created, making it a unique experience for the reader. The devotional thoughts are all followed with a prayer and praise section. I found the Biblical insights encouraging and inspiring and plan to go through this devotional again and again.
Any reader who enjoys Jane Austen and is familiar with her characters will enjoy this devotional.
I received this book from the publisher/author free of charge with no expectation of a positive review.
Loved going through this devotional! It consists of 50 devotions, 4 pages each with a simple prayer and praise section for each day. Great for any Christian, young or old, based on the prayers of Jane Austen, who was a devout Christian herself, simple yet thought provoking, and biblically sound. I looked forward to the time spent going through this book, it is a simple yet great way to start the day! I plan to keep it and read through it again in the future.
