Mercy Bennett
Death isn’t a mystery to me.
Thanks to my ability it only takes a single touch to know when people are going to die.
That’s how I know a member of my missing family tree is alive. Touching her picture brought me to this freezing little town in the middle of nowhere Colorado and I’m not leaving without the answers.
When those answers are held hostage until I prove what I can do, I’m not above using my ability in questionable ways to achieve the answers I seek.
Determining the fate of residents who have disappeared should be a piece of cake.
Until my ability goes haywire and I need to rely on more than just my touch.
I’ll have to embrace something much more deadly that I keep locked away deep inside.

Clark Weller
I’ve spent my entire life protecting this town’s secrets from strangers who could do more harm than good.
That’s why I wear the badge.
So, when a sexy woman shows up threatening to bust the town secrets wide open, I’m determined to stop her before she exposes the people I care for most.
Trusting her isn’t an option and neither is ignoring our explosive attraction.
The only question left is if we’ll survive the sparks long enough to explore our potential future together.

I love a good psychological thriller and this one was on target.

Mercy Bennett is in a remote, snowy town in the mountains trying to track down members of the Bennett family and find out more about her deceased sister, Talia. She finds it strange that the sheriff provides taxi service from the airport, but considering he wants to know who's coming and going, maybe it isn't all that peculiar after all. His mother owns the inn she's staying at, but she doesn't know that Dorothy is Clark's mother until he shows up for dinner.

Clark is the sheriff and is reluctant to let Mercy in on his case of a missing family, but his mother insists. Mercy is a Bennett and has her special talents, being she can tell how people are going to die and she can control the weather. Interesting combination. Clark reluctantly showed her a picture of the missing family and she was able to ascertain that the mother and father were dead, but the girls were still alive.

That kicked this story into high gear. Now Clark, the FBI, other members of the Bennett family, namely Walker and Clara Bennett, are searching for these girls. What they uncovered was a lot more than anyone was expecting and far more heinous. They were on the hunt for a killer.

I love romance in the books I read, too, and although that was a strong element in the story and one that I wanted so badly to have a happily ever after, it was the mystery and intrigue that kept me turning the pages. I wanted Mercy, Walker, and Clark to find the killer before it was too late. The story was filled with twists and turns and some shock and awe. It was great.

I do want to mention something about Mercy Bennett. She can't touch anybody without a vision coming to her as to how they're going to die. What a lonely existence that had to be for her. She's not down on anything, but she avoids shaking hands and even accidentally touching people. She was so afraid to touch Clark. She liked him and didn't want him to die let alone know how it was going to happen. I felt for her. She had a great attitude about everything, despite this talent (or curse), but it still had to be lonely for her.

As I said, this is a great psychological thriller with a surprise close to the end. I would've given it five stars, but there were a couple of errors in it that weren't all that big of a deal, but kept it from being picture-perfect (hyperthermia rather than hypothermia, for example). Not a huge deal. It wasn't enough to take away from the reading experience.

Great characters, tight plot, and the challenge of trying to get it all figured out before the end made this a compelling read.

Wow!

Another excellent read by Kate Allenton! This book has it all: mystery, a touch of paranormal, and of course, romance. Each book in this series has been leading toward another branch of the Bennett family, while each member finds love along the way. Now we are starting to see the fruits of their labor of love. I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment!

Quick read. I started out enjoying the series, except for the grammar, but it keeps deteriorating. I guess there is such a thing as love at first sight. Though Mercy and Clark started out as enemies, within a day, it appears to be love. The bad grammar is still there. For example: "a messy sheets." In one place Walker tells Mercy that her great grandparents were thieves. Less than a page later the great grandparents become grandparents. Since Mercy's grandmother is still alive, it has to be great grandparents as the grandmother knew nothing about Maxine's branch of the family.

I sometime wonder if the author of each book is the same. In book 3, there is a sister called Rachel that is not mentioned in the other books. In the 4th book, there is one sister less. Of course it is Rachel. In book five, the abilities of the sisters are switched. The author states that Faith finds things. No, Faith sees ghosts, Cassie finds things. I will read the last book since I have already bought it, but I don't know about any other books by this author.
