description I enjoyed this book a lot. However, I wouldn't call it a "romance" since that part of the story is very underdeveloped and nonexistent. It was more of a family ensemble story with a little suspense and a little romance mixed in. That said, I adored every character in the book. Each one was very distinct and had their own secrets and mysteries. It was also very well written and paced. The plot was interesting and kept me engaged throughout, and as I said, I loved all the characters and their interactions. I am definitely looking forward to the next book and to what happens to these characters next. 👍👍

4.5 stars The Second Shot is an entertaining romantic suspense with an intriguing plot and a great cast of characters. For me, I found that the book wasn't just about the mystery and suspense of who was targeting the Deveraux family, but also the interesting dynamic between the various family members. They each presented with strikingly unique personalities complete with various strengths and faults which lended to some rather humorous interactions between them. Still, one can't deny the family loyalty! While there is some action and suspense, there is surprisingly a fair amount of humor and sarcasm which I absolutely loved as it kept me chuckling throughout the book.

As for Dominique, I loved her strength and stubbornness. She thinks nothing of jumping right into the foray and of course Max tries to reign her in (or perhaps it's more appropriate to say supervise her since she has that independent streak?) before she gets into too much trouble. Dominique is a breath of the air and not the stereotypical socialite, but rather a headstrong woman who is somewhat underestimated by her family. Max is a great hero who didn't exactly make the best impression when he approached Dominique at a college party years ago. However, that attraction he feels towards her is just was strong as ever and he has a bit of protective streak without being overbearing. The two of them work well together and make a great couple. I cannot review this book without mentioning the secondary characters as the matriarch, the cousins, and Dominque's brother all fall somewhere between eccentric, quirky, funny, and are all wildly entertaining.

The Second Shot is told from various POVs which I think was a great way to illustrate how the story unravels. It did take me a bit to initially get into the book, but once I did, I couldn't put it down! I am definitely looking forward to more books by this author.

I received an early complimentary version of this book.

“The Second Shot wasn’t what I expected at all! I thought it was going to be a story full of romance but surprisedly it wasn’t the main point. Funny, hilarious with the perfect mix of suspense. Trust me, the intriguing plot will keep you on the edge. I guarantee you’ll adore every single one of the characters, they were simply perfect in the most unique style. The plot was extremely well written and developed. Once you start you won’t want to stop until you reach the end. I’m so pleased of what I read and I highly recommend it yo you! The plot was different and that make this story outstanding."

An intriguing read with some intense moments!

Bethany Maines is a new author for me to read and I really enjoyed how she carefully wove suspense and romance together to create this romantic thriller. I will say, I struggled with the first few chapters as I tried to figure out everything that was happening, to get a feel for the characters, and to understand just exactly what was going on with the Deveraux family. But after the second chapter, I was glued to the story. Dominique was actually quite interesting and I really like the way she was portrayed. She was different, and the fact that she had shared a past with Max, gave the story that romantic flair. She and Max were quite the pair, for sure.

Overall, the uniqueness of the Deveraux family and the fact the someone was out to harm them, kept things intense throughout most of the story. It was a fast-paced read with lots of excitement and mystery, something a bit different from what I normally read. If you're looking for a story that's not too heavy on the romance, yet lots of intensity, then this is certainly one you'll want to try.

Funny, steamy romantic thriller

The Deveraux clan is in a lot of trouble, in more ways than one. This book focuses on likable, beautiful, smart, confident (did I mention rich, whew that's a lot in one character!) Dominique Deveraux and charming, handsome, smokin' hot, US Marshal Max. They make for an adorable, quirky couple and a steamy romantic pair, all while trying to figure out who's after Dominique and her family, before someone gets run over by a car, or worse. This was a fun, quick read that sucked me in and made me laugh with tension and surprising character building for the whole Deveraux family, who are each seriously messed up in their own way. Don't want to give away the ending, but now I can't wait for the next one! A great book to cozy up with on a rainy fall day.

Written with an urban flair and a sense of humor I liked a lot, Second Shot got my attention from the first line. Oh. My. Gosh. Max and Dominique are great from the opening salvo to the end, and the epic dysfunctional family dynamic added fodder to a complex and compelling story. I was taken with this whole family. All different, all fighting their own demons, yet underneath it all, there’s a lot of love. This is a 5+ star from me, and I’m hoping, hoping, hoping the author will be writing more in this world. I have to know how the rest of the family fares through the ordeals they face.

I enjoyed the steamy modern romance set against the family drama. The Deveraux family always has each others backs even thought they shy away from saying anything real to each other. If you've ever felt like your family had no idea who you were but at the same time, loved them - this is the book for you. Plus Dominique and Max together were super hot. I expected the book to hit a lull at some point but it never did. Solid tension, action and 'ooh la la' all the way through.

Smart, sexy, funny with a side of danger! Outstanding story that’s wonderfully written with some of the best family dynamics I’ve ever read, loads of scary danger, hilarious banter, bizarre situations and characters that are rich, unique and complex. The Devereaux clan is such an interesting dichotomy of rich snobbery and laidback charm. I loved them all even the meanie, Evan. Each of the ‘children” under Grandma’s thumb are rebellious to the point of hilarity and sometimes destructiveness but they are always Devereaux. That is such a driving force in this family that protects and defends, always. The fabulous Dominique just slayed me with her outlandish charm, soft beauty and incredible strength. A wonderful heroine that is a thinker and always looks out for the family. The boys are so different from each other and I can’t wait for their stories especially the newest member of the family, Jackson. This is Dominique’s story of romance that has her encountering a college nemesis that is the hunky US Marshall, Max. While on vacation at his father’s, Max is drawn into the dire calamity that surrounds the Devereaux family while Grandma, the Senator, takes on big Pharma and unknowingly puts her grandchildren in danger. The situation puts Max in the position of getting close to his college crush, Dominique, and makes amends for a stupid college faux pas of a sexual nature. Lucky for Max, Nika accepts his apology and likes the grown up Max very much. If only the bad guys would stop with the cockblocking! The storyline is so much fun and the romance is sweet and sexy but the characters are everything. I found myself smiling throughout the story. Pure enjoyment! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.

Wow. I’m crushing pretty hard on this book right now. There’s not much I love more than romantic suspense that dips into rom-com territory. This story does that with a flair that reminds me of Knight and Day or Mr. & Mrs. Smith. I adored Max. He’s strong enough to admit to his mistakes and even apologize for them. Dominique wears a lot of different masks to protect herself. So do her brother and cousins. A big portion of the story is devoted to digging the Deveraux family out from behind those masks and letting us see some of their quirky vulnerabilities. I loved that we got to live in the heads of not only our romantic leads, but also the rest of the younger generation of Deveraux. What I think I liked least, is where this book stops. To me, it didn’t feel like enough of this story line wrapped up to be the right ending place for this story. It’s obvious this book is part of a series because there’re a lot of unanswered questions that I’m left pondering now that I’ve finished reading it. However, it’s a guaranteed way to keep me hooked, waiting for the next one in line.

U.S. Marshal Maxwell Ames is home visiting his father when he again meets Dominique Devereaux. Their first meeting, years ago, was a complete drunken embarrassment to him, so he humbly apologizes…and she accepts. There have been threats against the family, but nothing like the car, with no driver, that crashes through the window of their home. Dominique has had it with no results from the police and decides to investigate, with Max as her backup. There is instant attraction between them and Max does everything to protect the impulsive Dominique. This was such a fun book to read with “laugh out loud” dialog (and thoughts) by the characters, hot romance and action. This unique family works together to find out who is threatening them and why. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next book in this series. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

Don't let some crazy thing you did in college stand in your way of true chemistry! This story is full of just the right amount of romance and suspense. Loved the way the characters were brought to life in this book and ready to keep reading to the end. Great beginning to what looks to be a wonderful series. This is a well written book and it has some intense characters. This one is worth your time and effort. I don't do spoilers but it does have some mystery so get the book and check it out. It is a second chance story.

This book was a journey, and to be honest, I’m not quite sure where to start.

I received this book from the publisher, and from a tour company that I work with. Immediately, I’ll admit, I was drawn into the romance of it. Plot be damned, I wanted to know about Maxwell Ames and what drunken mistake he still had to make up for towards Dominique Deveraux after six years, and was drawn in by the romance of it. A US Marshall? Sounds like fun to me. Romance flourishing while dodging mercenaries and bullets is always a win in my book, so I requested it with little regard or a second thought.

When the ARC finally arrived to my kindle, I’d honestly forgotten about it and panicked, realizing that I’d accepted too many ARCs in a short amount of time. I was determined to buckle down and read it, because I wasn’t going to renege on my deal. But then I reread the description and thought: What was I thinking? Romantic suspense might be favorite, but I’m still quite picking about them and to be completely honest, I was so not in the mood. I wanted more fluffy romances, please!

Good thing this delivered… eventually. I went into it sullenly, upset at myself for getting too happy with the acceptance button and didn’t enjoy the beginning of the book. It was a bit muddled, to be quite honest, and it took until nearly the end for me to puzzle some basic things out, and that part wasn’t my mood’s fault. So many characters were thrown at me at once, I was struggling to keep track. I still don’t know who Owen and Randall are, and while they were dead during the events in the book, they heavily influenced the characters still. They were… some kind of family relation, at least.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” She demanded, rally and attempting to channel her emotions into something non-weepy.
“I have an unhealthy obsession with scones,” said Jackson.
“What?” she looked at her cousin with a half-laugh.
“You asked what was wrong with me.”

This book was hugely character-driven, so I can see why things were so overwhelming in the beginning, and the author did a great job of giving them all very distinct personalities. Unfortunately, all of those personalities were very loud and took up a lot of space. So while the side characters were perfectly enjoyable, I felt the character I knew least was one of the main characters, Max. Yes, that’s the hero of the book, the US Marshall. I couldn’t help but think that he and his emotional baggage was shoved to the side, only to be tied up very neatly at the end. I missed a lot of emotional journey’s our main characters went through, because so much of it was focused on the side characters. This was a tad disappointing, even though the side characters were frequently funny.

The whole plot device where Max thought Jackson and Dominique were dating (spoiler: they’re cousins), grew very tired, very fast. And by “very fast,” I mean it took 65% of the book. Max’s internal dialogue about the whole thing was also irritating, because he insisted that he wouldn’t move in on another guy’s territory, and then the next page when she flashed some leg, was like “fuck it, I’m going in,” only to flip the other way again once their lips locked. It was frustrating, and I think there were cleverer devices that could have been used to move the plot along and still roadblock the romance in the way the author so clearly wanted.

Also… a bit disappointed in the way Eleanor was written. She was a bit too big for her britches in a very stereotypical way. Is she a mob boss? Or a dainty elder woman of society? Oh, I get it she’s both. Smiles in your face and stabs you in the back. Badass bitch. Yeah… okay…

Overall, it wasn’t a bad book. I think it was a bit underdeveloped in some ways and over-developed in others, but it had a genuinely good idea behind it. Things might have dragged in the middle and been tidied up a bit too fast there at the end, but it was an enjoyable way to pass the time, if you’re looking for a book that you don’t want to get too invested in during a busy time in life, but can still be interested in how the plot and romance develop. I especially enjoyed the side-plots going on,indeed, they were my favorite part, and the biting one-liners and humor sprinkled throughout. Definitely kept things interesting, and I cracked several smiles! Click here to enter the giveaway!

Thank you Next Step PR for the title, of course, and to Social Butterfly PR for the work you do 😄

There were so many facets to it that I could sink my teeth into – politics and the lifestyles of the rich and famous, mystery and mischief, family intrigues and dysfunction and wonderfully likeable characters that I wanted to invest time into.

I enjoyed the fact that the story didn’t only focus on our two lovebirds; I so enjoyed taking a peek into the lives and psyches of other members of Dominique’s family and learning more about the family dynamic. Even though there was danger and thickening political plots afoot, there was also so much humour in the dialogue and the interactions which made me enjoy it all the more. The humour was beautifully sarcastic, a bit snarky, sometimes subtle and always smart – I appreciated that it, along with a real and deep love for each other, was always part of the undertone.

I enjoyed our main male lead. Although, Dominique has a few leading men in her life – I do not mean this facetiously, I really do mean that she’s the only female of her cousins and in one way or another, they’re all pretty present in her life. In this particular instance, I’m referring to Max. Max is sweet and adorable and protective and an all-round really nice guy. I feel like he’s the good-hearted jock, but also, a bit of a shy guy. And I love that he blushes and takes responsibility for his actions. He’s a total package!

Dominique is smarter than anyone gives her credit for (except Max) and she has such a mouth on her! The running diatribe between her and Jackson and Aiden is quite amusing and Max falls into the mix quite seamlessly. She’s no one’s doormat and she has so much heart! I guess she’s supposed to be some kind of Ice Queen but I haven’t seen that in her. She’s a feisty, relatable woman with some cute quirks that I could easily see myself being friends with IRL.

All in all, I enjoyed this book so much that I very much want to dive into the next one and unravel all of the wonderful mysteries.

The Second Shot is my first read by Bethany Maines, and I thoroughly enjoyed this intriguing, thrilling and mystery filled romance. The Deveraux family are dynamic and totally addictive and certain to capture many readers attention with the promise of more gripping stories to come. Believable world building, an intense and exciting plot and the added bonus of the passionate relationship between Dominique and Max. The cast of characters within this story have a multitude of deep and complex personalities, but there are also some light-hearted and humorous moments that make their faults all the more enjoyable. I’m excited to read the next in this series.

I wanted to like this book. I love the bodyguard trope and it sounded like a good romantic suspense novel. However, there's never any suspense (it's very obvious who the bad guys are), and Dominque's family was written in an almost laughable way. They seemed like caricatures of political or rich people who lived in the morally grey area and have "dark" pasts and are misunderstood.

6 years ago, Maxwell Ames royally screwed up his one chance with Dominique Deveraux. Or so he thought. Max, home on vacation, never thought he'd run into Nika again, much less have the opportunity to apologize for the incident from their college years. Nika on the other hand hadn't expected his apology, nor had she expected the attraction between them. What seemed to be their second chance to be together suddenly gets put on the back-burner; the entire Deveraux family seems to be in danger. But U.S. Marshal Maxwell Ames is ready to keep Dominique out of harm's way.

I enjoy a good romantic suspense read every now and again, and this book did not disappoint in that department.
The overall plot was enjoyable and I liked the writing style. Though I prefer to read in third person, multiple POVs if possible. I like to be in the characters head if it can be helped.
The Deveraux cousins are all supposed to be in their mid to late twenties, but it was honestly like reading about a group of rebel teenagers going on dangerous quests against their parents’ wishes. But weirdly, I was into it. That’s mostly thanks to the characters themselves. They were all so different from each other, but caring towards each other in their own odd way. It must be something in their genes, because all of the cousins, and oddly enough outsider Max as well, were all such fun characters to read about, witty and sassy and their own brand of funny. What really shocked me, was how easily I forgave Evan and how badly I want it to turn out well for him.
Though what I didn’t really enjoy about this book, was that we followed three people; Max, Nika, and Nika’s cousin Jackson, who’s in charge of security. I understand that this is a romantic SUSPENSE, but that really killed my mood a little. I would’ve preferred to just follow Max and Nika around.

Now a little spoiler/warning for hardcore romance readers.
In my humble opinion, there was a below average amount of romance going on. There was some, but I went in hoping for a little more. If you’re a romance reader like me, it’s probably a good idea for me to warn you that there is only one explicit sex scene. But the humor in this story makes up for it, at least in my opinion.

US Marshal Maxwell did something really stupid in a drunken state in college. Six years later he reunites with Dominique. After apologizing he hopes to get a second shot.
Senator Eleanor is ruthless when it comes to politics but caring when it comes to her grandchildren. Having them involved one way or the other in her political career not only for the trust but to make sure the Deveraux name is not tainted.
Dominique is a stubborn, independent woman who does as she pleases and seems to find trouble. Max has his hands full trying to protect her.
Jackson is head of security. Sometimes he goes a little beyond with his security to ensure the safety for everyone. Trying to protect everyone from the mercenaries that are determined to harm them. He needs a love interest in a book.
Evan has piqued my curiosity and now Aiden. What hides behind the mask they are wearing?
A dysfunctional family that sticks together when the going gets rough. A dose of humour, a sprinkle of romance and a lot of drama.
Thank you Hidden Gems and the author for a digital copy. Read and reviewed voluntarily and the opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

The best thing about this book were the characters. The author has created a really interesting and intriguing set of people.

So there was a mystery weaving through the book but I found that element a bit disjointed - they all seemed to have pieces of a puzzle told from different viewpoints and I don’t think it was pulled together properly. There was a bit of a finale and then the mystery element died a bit.

However I enjoyed what I read and there’s definitely a good platform for this to evolve into a great series as we explore the individual characters a bit more.

The interactions were great, it was funny at times, there was some passion and a fair amount of action.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Reasons to give this book a shot: clever lines, funny quips, family loyalty, and interesting characters along with some suspense, danger, and passion. I also like the positive message in this story regarding seeking therapy and asking for help. I enjoy stories like this one that make me laugh out loud and care about the characters. Well written with only a few editing errors.
I look forward to seeing the other books in this series to see what exciting things happen next for the Deveraux family. I received a complimentary copy of this title through Book Sirens and leave this review voluntarily.

I received this as an advanced reading copy.

I totally enjoyed this book. The plot and the characters. I can't wait to find out what happens to Dominique's brother and cousins. They were so well developed with their own issues and mysteries that there must be books coming out about them as well.

Some authors try to hard to be too PC these days. This author approaches it as an honest conversation while recognizing that sometimes you just can't win for losing. In the end, you don't feel like the author is trying to preach at you.

“The Second Shot” was an entertaining, well written thriller/romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the world building and all of the characters. The relationships between all of the Deveraux siblings/cousins was both hilarious and heart wrenching to read. I definitely loved the chemistry between Max and Dominique, and loved reading about there growing romance.
This book left me wanting more from the Deveraux family and I’m excited to read more about them in book 2!!

This was a very interesting story that kept me reading until the very last page. I will say that I thought I was getting a thriller romance but the romance in this one was light. This was a great little blend of family and suspense. The characters were amazing though. I loved how the story unfolded and the ending. I can not wait to read more from this author.

The book was funny and interesting to read. My only problem was the vast number of editing problems. Missing words, double words, sentences that didn't make sense, things like "to" instead of "too". Really should be fixed. Not sure if I'll read another or not.

This was a fine “family” novel of romantic suspense-4 adult cousins being raised by their Grandmother who is a US Senator. This book is the second in the series. Fancy and beautiful girl hooks up with the college boy who is now a man who insulted her 6 or 8 years ago. Danger. Romance. Sex.

The Second Shot is the first book that I have read from Bethany Maines. I actually enjoyed it even though I don't normally read action romances. I almost feel like I can't call this a romance though because it wasn't really one. It has "dating" and kissing and some sex but not as much as you would think.
I enjoyed the banter between the cousins and it was a little funny to me that Max thought Jackson and Nika were dating for a bit there. I felt kinda bad for him but still a bit funny. I enjoyed Nika as a character and thought she was pretty badass. She doesn't exactly show her emotions and does things that the family doesn't agree with but she doesn't care.
Max was a good guy from the beginning and kinda relatable with the whole college situation. It was interesting that his job seemed hidden from the reader until a few chapters in though. I liked the chemistry he had with Nika though and what was happening between him and his dad. I loved how this was supposed to be his vacation but of course it had to be a busy vacation.
I am not sure how to feel about Eleanor or what to think of her. She seemed to be a concerned grandmother but also a ruthless senator that thinks nothing can hurt her so these men go after her grandkids. I am glad that the 'kids' seem to do anything for her and want to keep her safe but I hope you get to read more about her and how she is.
I am not sure how I feel about Evan but I hope I can read his story and that he has better character development. Aiden and Jackson seem interesting also so it will be cool to read about Aiden in the second story. I like the title of the second story and I really wonder who Cinderella is. I also hope to hear more about Max and Nika in the second story and to see where they are in life/relationship.
