A magical boarding school. Budget cuts. Missing teaches. A not-so-cozy mystery.
You think you know the world of magical boarding schools? Not from a teacher's perspective at a school for at risk youth.
Safe Hex A mysterious force is keeping Prince Elric and Felix Thatch weak and drained. Clarissa must discover the cause of both men’s magical malady’s—and her own—before the Raven Queen strikes when they are all at their weakest.
The Joy of Hex Despite her lack of magic, Clarissa is determined to get those she loves back, even if it means joining the dark side. In order to bring justice to the land, she will have to fulfill her contract with a Fae, seek answers from Alouette Loraline’s diary of experiments, steal the Ruby of Divine Wisdom, and accept assistance from the wickedest witch in all the land—even if it kills her and everyone around her.
Hedge Witchin’ in the Kitchen Clarissa Lawrence knows little of her fairy godmother’s past. When she discovers an unopened wedding present in the form of a recipe book from her adoptive mother, she also finds a letter that explains Abigail Lawrence’s mysterious past.
Bite Me What’s a villainous vampire to do when he is thwarted from drinking blood by all the sexy vampires?
Greener on the Other Side Prince Charming knows he is meant to be a human prince, not a frog. Only if he can outsmart a vicious cat and get help from a flighty princess and those pesky children who would rather eat the witch’s gingerbread house rather than help him, will be able to use the witch’s spell book to turn himself into the hero he knows he is meant to me.
This book bundle includes: Safe Hex The Joy of Hex Hedgewitchin’ in the Kitchen
and BONUS MATERIAL: Bite Me Greener on the Other Side are also included in this bundle.
Finally, we get the recipes for some of the foods we have read about. Sadly, this is shorter by a book than the other collections and the last book is more about the next series than tying up some loose ends of this one. I honestly felt cheated.
Only three books in this book bundle. But it is enhanced by a collection of kitchen witch’s recipes that sound like they would be very good at the end.
Safe Hex – Book 16
The first of the three books in this set is mostly kind of boring, at least concerning the action of the overall story. Clarissa and Felix Thatch have been drained of their magic by their last encounter with the Raven Queen. They are both very weak. For the longest time, though everyone she knows attempts to wake Clarissa up, they are only successful for a short time, and eventually she passes out again. Clarissa feels that she is missing something, and as during her younger days, she is resentful when nobody will tell her what is going on.
Finally, she is able to stay awake for longer spells, but it appears that this is only because Prince Elric is feeding her a trickle of magic to sustain her. But Clarissa notices that Elric seems nearly as drained as she and Thatch are. Much of the second half of the book consists of Clarissa, Thatch, and Elric attempting to use Hex (magic-enhancing sex) on each other to strengthen themselves. Some of this is a little explicit; if you dislike explicit sex in your fantasies, you might want to skip this one. You will lose very little of the story.
The biggest piece of the action comes at the end when the Raven Court attacks Elric’s estate where they have all been living since their return from the Raven Court. (Elric’s father has kicked him out of the Silver Court, so they are at a nice country house). When the Raven Court finishes with it, though, the estate is not very nice anymore. Additionally, Imani, who is Elric’s granddaughter, is captured by the Raven Court for her Red affinity. And one of the other children under Elric’s protection is killed.
Clarissa and Vega realize they need to overcome everybody’s weaknesses and go kick some Raven Court rear end.
The Joy of Hex – Book 17
Clarissa and Vega, occasionally accompanied by Thatch, decide to recharge their Red affinities by visiting multiple electrical power-generating stations in the Morty Realm. After a bit, Vega goes on what appears to be a wild spree of electrical charging and disappears from the estate. Clarissa is worried she may be turning evil.
But after a visit from the dragons from the Jade Court, Clarissa realizes that she needs a full rainbow to properly take down the Raven Queen. She contacts her friends from Womby’s to see if any of them are willing to help with the project. To her surprise, more than she expected turn up – even some she didn’t ask for. As part of her earlier attempts to heal Thatch and Elric, Clarissa acquired a gem called the Ruby of Divine Wisdom. But when she shows it to her assembled friends when they get together to plan the assault on the Raven Court, Vega steals it and disappears.
When they get to the Raven Court, they find Vega seated beside the Raven Queen. It looks for a while as if things are going spectacularly wrong. And after a short lesson in who is related to whom and how things do begin to go spectacularly wrong – for the Raven Queen.
But some things can’t be undone so easily. And some good people are lost.
The Witch’s Familiar
This book takes us back to an earlier – may we even say happier? – time, even though it didn’t appear so happy then. It tells the story of Abigail Lawrence (Clarissa’s foster mother; they have come to use the term ‘fairy godmother’ for someone who serves Witchkin in this capacity) and Lucifer Thatch. Lucifer is Felix Thatch’s youngest brother, but we don’t meet him as a person until the end of The Joy of Hex. He has been around as Abby’s cat familiar for the entire series though. At any rate, Lucifer and Abby were under the control of the less powerful but evil hedgewitch, Baba Nata, until they decided to leave. That act is what changed Lucifer into a cat. And led to the rest of Abby’s story in the Morty realm.
