Push: My Father, Polio, and Me is an intimate, powerful memoir by Push’s daughter, exploring the devastation polio wreaked upon generations up until the 1950s
Writer, reader, cook and gardener. Latest book 'PUSH: My father, Polio, and Me' a family memoir published by Gatehouse Press, 2019. Currently writing and publishing poetry and short stories. I haven't given up on the long form entirely, but I'm loving getting back to the sharpness and economy of shorter pieces. I am a trustee for the SAWTrust, A British Polio Fellowship Ambassador and a member of the National Centre for Writing Supporters' Circle. 'Hoad and Other Stories' was published by Stonewood Press, 2014 and three non-fiction books covering event management in the voluntary sector published by The Directory of Social Change prior to then.
Seldom have I read a book set in the past (1950s), which feels so contemporary in its themes. Although technically a memoir, Push’s sparkling, intimate and evocative prose also reads like a novel. The themes of family, vaccination and living alongside unexpected illness (polio) makes for an extremely timely read.
