A brilliant reporter, haunted by her husband's death...
A disgraced cop, tangled in a web of lies...
Two unlikely heroes. One unthinkable crime.
The Crime Beat, Episode 7: Tokyo
Cole and Warren must split up. Cole travels to Tokyo as the ramifications of her article shock the world and her fame nearly drowns her. Meanwhile, Warren travels back to Washington, D.C., to pursue an investigation of his own.
Perfect for readers of Michael Connelly and fans of True Detective or Jack Ryan, The Crime Beat is your next bingeable series from bestselling author A.C. Fuller. -----
The Crime Beat is a nine-episode novella series, designed to be read in orderandin its entirety. Although each episode tells a complete portion of the story, the nine novellas--read together--weave one unforgettable tale.
Once a journalist in New York, A.C. Fuller now writes stories at the intersection of media, politics, and technology. Before he began writing full time, he was an adjunct professor of journalism at NYU and an English teacher at Northwest Indian College.
He lives with his wife, two children, and two dogs near Seattle. For a free copy of one of A.C.'s books, check out: http://www.acfuller.com/readerclub/
Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
We actually start still in Paris. After a wild night, the police are unhappy with Warren. He gets sent back to the US and chooses Washington DC. He has his car to reclaim and some leads to follow there.
Cole is a star in the media because of her accurate predictions. Barker offers her better pay and commitments to take all her stories. She seems kind of finished with the stories, even offering info to a television reporter. But she flies to Tokyo to follow the next lead.
Warren gets some excellent information on the case in DC, that connects more of those they have been studying. Cole runs into trouble in Tokyo.
Narration: I've enjoyed this narrator previously on a police procedural series and this is a similar genre. Her male and female voices were comfortably appropriate. I enjoyed listening at my usual 1.5x speed.
Wow! Tied with Episode 1: New York for "Best of Series" so far. This is the sharpest, tightest, most gripping read since #1--totally loved it. Raced through it, much like one races through fast-paced Tokyo life, with startling surprises around every corner/page. Club God is quintessential Tokyo, and, plot-twist-wise, Warren's fall off the wagon is another tantalizing glitch in the international search he and Cole are racing through to solve/stop the murderous conspiracy we've been watching from the edge of our seats for seven books. Right now it's: "No. Honey, we're a dumpster fire topped with sprinkles." Even though this remark is Jane to Robert about their relationship, it fits the series plot at this point. Bring on #8!!!
How I hope Fuller includes X-Ray with his next series (what is JAG? MMA? RDX? NVM?). I received a copy of this book from the publisher with no strings attached and am writing my honest review.
At first you think these are a series of novels with the same characters. Then you find that basically they are one novel, delivered chapter by chapter. A tiresome way of reading what essentially is only one book. But then again, it's fairly well written, the characters are attractive, their quirks are intriguing, and the plot is well thought out, or so it seems.
After seven of these chapters I'm getting a bit tired of the whole gimmick. Seven booklets of about 75 pages each, and weeks or months between delivery. Try to remember all that happened. Problem is you want to see how it ends, but on the other hand I have had it with this way of reading a novel. Don't know if I will stay the whole nine yards.
I received an ARC from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. I'm telling you, after reviewing the previous 6 episodes I'm running out of ways to say how good this series is. I mean, there are only so many superlatives, and I'm running short of new ones. Oh, well, suffice it to say, this book is terrific. Warren and Cole have temporarily put their issues behind them and continued to search for the 'mastermind'. There is plenty of action and suspense. The closer it gets to the end the more anxious I am for the next installment. If you haven't read these, make sure you do.
I am enjoying this series so much. Each episode is full of twists and turns and very well developed. One never knows what to expect next. I am always ready for the next book. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review
Plot- or character-driven? A mix Strong character development? Yes Loveable characters? Yes Diverse cast of characters? Yes Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
Installment 7 was definitely different from the previous sections in that we are now following Cole headed to Japan and Warren in the States. Great read!
