The first book, Unspeakable Words, had some faults but was quite enjoyable. The second book, Walk a Mile, made me pissy as fuck. But this book?

I'm going to put the majority of my review under a spoiler--it was just way too hard reviewing the second book without spoiling the first one and I don't have the energy to even attempt it with this one. But anyway, I do want to say one thing to people who haven't started this series yet: do NOT get attached the serial killer plot in the first book. I love serial killers (I've got a t-shirt and everything ) and one thing that disappointed me about the first book was that part of the plot was completely dropped about halfway through. And then barely mentioned in the second. It was just an excuse for Special Agent John Flynn to fly to San Francisco and meet Special Agent Jerry Lee Parker. The main focus of the mystery is the magical mystical shit (with some murder thrown in, yes). The main focus of the romance is golly gee whizzer, we sure suck at communicating!, which, in case I’m being too subtle, I fucking hate. Generally. I like the characters and books enough to stick with this series, though. Also, I’ve come to accept that I may never get any answers about that serial killer. Whaddya gonna do?

Anyway, CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED.

Oh! Oooooh! I almost forgot. The sex in this book is pretty good too. A vast ocean of improvement over the first book (fade to black) and the second (it was odd because reasons).

I am having some difficulties rating this book. I liked some things about it, but for the most part, I was really frustrated. Okay, I think I should go ahead with the ‘negative’ comments first, so I can close this opinion on a more positive note.

I was frustrated with the communication issue between Lee and John – for the majority of the book (at least until around 70%), I felt like we were back to where it started. It was one of my main problems with this couple. I thought the relationship was a little one-sided because John, who was the telepath, could pick up what Lee was thinking but he never shared a lot about himself in return. Lee always ended-up tip-toeing around their relationship, professionally or personally.

In the second book, Madison used a body-swapping technique to work on this – I thought it was cheating, but whatever – so Lee could finally pick-up John’s thoughts. He learned quite a lot. Then, BAM, the amnesia happened – and we were back to square one. Lee didn’t know that John could hear his thoughts. John had the upper hand … on everything!!

It frustrated the hell out of me – especially because John kept Lee in the dark about this. Also since Lee was recuperating, he spent most of the time by himself or with John’s mother, while John went out every day to work. Gah!! We already had TWO books dealing with John’s inability to communicate (plus Lee’s unwillingness to share) and I really needed it to be over.

About the mystery – didn’t Madison remember that in the first book, we had the agents dealing with a SERIAL KILLER? It was the initial case that put the agents together, FIVE YEARS AGO in book one. I knew that apparently, the story took a different turn into dealing with the magical artifacts thing – but what about the serial killer case? This is book #3 and we don’t have any updates on that. Heck, even the case about the two missing artifacts didn’t exactly hold the spotlight in this book either. Because Lee needed to rest, and he was the MAIN narrator, we didn’t know what happened with the investigation (John was the one doing it, and he was basically missing most of the time). Seriously, it was moving nowhere.

I love mystery books – I devoured Agatha Christie books when I was younger, and despite what Madison tried to say here (there was a paragraph in this book which I thought was Madison’s way of dealing with the ‘critique’ about the mystery resolution), those books had PROGRESS. I didn’t need a quick-paced book or chapters that ended with a hook. I read mainstream mysteries that last 400 pages long, and I had no problem if it went slowly. But there was progress there (and sometimes multiple dead bodies), there was investigation, there was interviewing suspects, or picking up clues. Here, not so much. *sad face*

And don’t get me started with the ‘sudden’ D/s element in the bedroom between the two agents. Let me just say that I didn’t like it. Maybe other readers do, but this reader don’t. Nuff said.

So all the negative things are out of the way – let me get to the positive things. I still liked Madison’s writing; I was first introduced to her books five years ago and I still enjoyed them now. I still like Lee and his personality. We did have a progress near the end when Lee finally found out about what John has been keeping from him. We also had answers about what the magical artifacts really all about. AND, this must be said … I really, REALLY loved John’s mother. Mrs. Flynn was awesome. SUPER awesome – totally worth reading scenes for her (instead of her son). I enjoyed every moment of Lee and Mama Flynn’s time together; especially when Mama Flynn took out her gun. *laugh*

It wasn’t a total downer – but I don’t know whether I have enough patience to read the next book. Maybe I will wait until I get reviews from other people or until I get into the right mood. As always, this is my opinion alone, your mileage would vary...

I said "Wow" at the end of book two, and the feeling hasn't stopped. Jerry, after having been beaned pretty hard in the head with a baseball bat, now has no memory of the past six months, and sketchy ones of his life before that. They're returning but not in the orderly fashion he would prefer. *grins* For a guy who essentially has an eidetic memory, this is beyond frustrating. So basically, he doesn't remember John, he doesn't remember the artifacts, and that means he doesn't remember that John is now telepathic or that they switched bodies for a while. And, of course, typical for John, he is keeping a lot of things close to his chest.

"Because that was the most bizarre part about this amnesia crap—finding out that Special Agent Hot Stuff was my boyfriend. I know, I know. It still takes me by surprise, every now and then. For the first three days in the hospital, I’d repeatedly told him to shut up and get the fuck out of town every time the subject came up. It was embarrassing."

This book finds us back with our two favorite FBI agents, this time in Lee's POV. After waking from his recent attack with some significant amnesia, Lee has no recollection of his relationship with John Flynn, or the nature of the mysterious relic involved in their case. It's interesting to watch Jerry/Lee reinventing himself, while not knowing how John can hear and anticipate him. The relationship between the guys is stripped down and rebuilt on a slightly different foundation.

There are some fun secondary characters, notably John's mother. The action is a bit more subdued at first, taking a backseat to the personal factors. I enjoyed that. We do reach the scrambling excitement of the climax. The ending is a bit of a surprise, more unsettled than I expected (and more than I felt was justified from the plot set-up, although I won't argue with getting another book in this series.) This is a fast fun mystery/thriller/paranormal ride, and I will be looking forward to the further adventures of John and Lee.

3.5 stars?

This book was kinda slow. Not sure I was as impressed as the earlier two books of this series. The final few chapters seemed rather rushed and it had a bit of plot holes. But I did enjoy seeing Jerry/Lee be more vulnerable. It probably saved his relationship with John. I expected this book to be the end but alas, it’s not.

And worse still, it doesn’t seem like there’s going to be a next book of this incomplete series! 😭

This is my favourite paranormal/FBI series in the m/m genre, and my favourite book of the three so far.

I have to declare a mild bias as Sarah and I are members of the same crit group.

I can’t wait for the next book. Go and read this one, and you won’t want to wait either.

This is book three in a series I’ve followed since the first book was published in 2010 – and loved ever since – and I’d strongly advise against reading it as a standalone. Aside from missing out on two really great books, you’d also miss half the story since it’s virtually impossible to incorporate all the plot twists and turns I loved so much in the first two books. Plus, getting into this series at this point you’d also miss out on half the joy of seeing hermit crab Jerry out of his shell, more outspoken than he’s ever been, almost vulnerable at times and yet perfectly able to put up a fight, armed with his sharp wit and dry humor.
God, Jerry. I fell for him all over again in this book, same as Flynn did. Their relationship really took a big step forward; while I almost despaired of them in most of Walk a Mile, I totally believed in their future as a couple this time. Not to mention that the sex between them was insanely hot, thanks to a little hint of a kinky twist that surprised me, yet in hindsight made a lot of sense.
Another major reason why I enjoy this series so much is Jerry’s deliciously authentic 1st Person POV narrative voice. It kept true from book one all the way through the twists and turns of the plot while STILL mirroring the changes Jerry’s character went through, which is amazing, as far as I’m concerned. AND he managed to keep both his inclination to ramble and his dry humor, which I found particularly endearing.
The secret hero of this book was a surprise too, a pleasant one, I must add. Talk about a force to recon with– Flynn’s mum almost stole the show away from the boys.
This book answered many questions for me, although not all of them, drat it. It did not end on a cliffhanger (THANK YOU!) but there were enough loose ends fluttering around to keep me waiting impatiently for the next book. Which might be a good thing in general but is one of the reasons why I normally don’t read series. Sigh.
This series started out great and it just keeps getting better and better. I’m biting my fingernails waiting for the next (and hopefully final) instalment.

I was so glad to see another book in this series and it looks like there will be more! [review hidden as it may contain spoilers for some readers]

We pick up book 3 pretty much right where book 2 left off. Jerry, who has an eidetic memory, has amnesia, and has to rely on John Flynn for information about their most recent cases AND their relationship.

Waking up with amnesia to find out you have a seriously hot boyfriend? WHERE DO I SIGN UP??
The book follows along as Jerry slowly recovers and tries to piece together the last few months of his life.

AND THE READER IS LEFT WONDERING WHEN HE WILL REMEMBER/FIND OUT THAT JOHN CAN READ MINDS. I was really tense wondering when it would happen and also, what the fall out would be. I know John had his reasons for not telling Jerry, but man, I was waiting for Jerry to blow up when he did and I wasn't disappointed [and if you know what scene I'm thinking about, NO ONE WAS DISAPPOINTED ;)]

Lots of great surrounding characters including John's mother, who I really like [and could possibly keep showing up?? with a little romance of her own??].

Great, action packed ending with the hope for more! I'm super excited!

I know I'll be emailing Sarah and asking if she's already working on book 4!

What can I say about this book other then it was just so good!!!

These two characters Jerry and Flynn go through so much in this book!
Between the memory loss Jerry has and then the secrets Flynn keeps from Jerry. You get to watch these two grow so much stronger as a couple too. Of course you get your mystery and the bad guys who come after them. On top of that you really get to see more of Jerry's character and can I just say I really do love his character!
Jerry and Flynn go stay with Flynn's mother after Jerry leaves the hospital and it was so sweet to see Flynn and his mother grow so much closer in this book. I really do not want to give to much away and spoil this for everyone because this is definitely one you need to read for yourself.
I will say you get your angst and mystery, with so much sweet and steam in this book too! All that together was just perfect and I really loved where this author went with these two characters.

All together I loved this book!

I would definitely recommend this series!

I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

This is the third book and I must say that I think that Flynn and Jerry's relationship grows by leaps and bounds. Because of Jerry's memory loss, you get to see a much more honest Jerry. He is no longer guarded - he let's it all hang out in this book.

I still was slightly upset with Flynn, but understand his reasons behind his actions.

I think this book is filled with a much more honest relationship - but, the questions about their relationship are not truly answered from book 2. I was still frustrated with their communication, but there was definitely a lot of sexiness in this book.

In this story, you get to see a little more of Flynn's background too. I loved his mother - loved her flare. she helped me to see a deeper side of Flynn - allowed the reader to see the side of him that he so severely protects.

It's hard to describe all that goes on in this story without giving it away, but I was again, frustrated and satisfied all at once. I can't wait for more!

Finally, we get a little more insight into the origin of the puzzle box artifacts, and at least one antagonist searching to claim them. Also, more development of the primary romance between the main characters, Parker's amnesia redefining their relationship from the perspective of an outsider, as well as their secondary family ties as they begin to develop a support network. An enjoyable step forward in the story.

So, the author is playing a much longer game than I would have anticipated. Well done, Ms. Madison!

I have high hopes that points that I and other people were kind of meh! about will be clarified in the last installment in the series.

So, next book, pretty please?

This is such a wonderful series. And, I cannot express how much I am enjoying the two main characters, Flynn and Lee. But what caught my imagination and wanted more of was Flynn's mother, Jean and her book club. That was just a great part of this story. Can't wait for the next book.

4 Heart Review by Vicki

I’ve been “friends” with Sarah Madison on Facebook for some time, and I’ve been wanting to read one of her books. I saw Truth and Consequences on our list for review and decided it was time to give her a try. Since this is the third in a series, I grabbed the first and second books so I would be all up to date.

This review WILL contain spoilers for the first two books. There is no way I can talk about the plot of this book without mentioning things that occurred in the other books…

This series follows Jerry Lee Parker and John Flynn, both FBI agents, partners at work and partners at home. The first book has them in San Fransisco, John is called in to assist on a serial killer case, partnering up with Jerry. They end up getting sidetracked by another murder, which turns out to be unrelated to the serial killer, but ends up with them finding an artifact in a museum that leaves John with telepathy. Yup, you read that right. Telepathy. Apparently I didn’t read the blurb closely enough, I totally missed there was going to be any paranormal aspect to these books. I was reading along, thinking it was a book about law enforcement officers, solving crimes and falling in love. Then BAM!!! John has telepathy. I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. The two eventually hook up, and begin a relationship. I wouldn’t call it love at that point though.

The second book has the two traveling to Washington DC in hopes of tracking down a similar artifact, hoping to find a solution to John’s issue. They end up sidetracked as well, getting involved in a hunt for the killer of John’s sister from twenty years ago, and a weird thing with one of John’s friends from high school. They do find another artifact that causes…. damn, probably shouldn’t say. But it really didn’t work for me at all. So the book ends with Jerry getting hit on the head, no progress on the serial killer storyline, a solution to the death of John’s sister, possession of one of the artifacts but no clue as to what they are.

Whew. This book starts with Jerry in the hospital waking up with amnesia. This is rough for him, he’s got an amazing memory, photographic isn’t the right word, but I can’t come up with what you call it at the moment. Yes, I think that’s funny too, I can’t remember the word to describe the guys amazing memory! Anyway. Jerry has no memory of John, very little memory of things before John, and decides that Jerry is a stupid name and he wants to be called Lee. He’s released from the hospital, goes home with John who he doesn’t know or trust, but John takes him to his mother’s house to recover. He does gain bits of his memory as the story progresses.

This book focuses more on the hunt for the mysterious artifacts, Jerry doing some research online that leads him to a name and history for the funky little boxes. We finally get a look at the bad guy who has been hunting for the boxes, and a little action takes place between the good guys and the bad guys.

Lots of time is spent developing the characters and the relationship between John and Lee. There is a touch of very mild BDSM, more dominance and submission, a little bondage, and a spanking. We get more about Lee’s family issues, and a bit about John’s issues, and get to know Jean, John’s mom very well.

My big issue with all three of these books is that I can’t decide if they are paranormal or not. I wish there was either more to the paranormal storyline, or less. I thought I was getting stories about FBI agents solving crimes and falling in love. I was ok with the addition of the telepathy if it was going to be used to hunt down the serial killer that was introduced in the first book. But nothing has happened with the serial killer storyline at all. It was more used as a way to get the two main characters together in the first book, then it went off on the tangent of the telepathy, the boxes, the murder, and Jerry’s kidnapping. The second book started to focus on the hunt for the boxes, but got distracted by the old murder of John’s sister, some drama with high school friends of John’s and the weird thing I don’t want to mention that didn’t work for me at all. This book was all about the boxes, and finally at the very end, we find out the two are heading back to SF to get back to the serial killer. I liked the action surrounding the mysterious artifacts. I feel this book had more focus than the other two, I liked that there was no job, or crime for them to be solving, it was all about the box. This plot worked better for me than the last two.

I wish we could see part of this from John’s perspective. He goes and does “work” things now and then in this book, and stuff happens that we don’t know about. They spend a fair amount of time apart, and we don’t ever see or hear what John is doing or thinking.

So I liked the storyline of this book better than the others, even though it had the very soap opera amnesia plot. I actually like Lee (or Jerry, not really sure who he is now) and John quite a bit. I like the tension between them, with Lee being out and confident, John not so much. I liked the introduction of Jean, and her bonding with Lee. The sex between them is so good, the tension and anger at times making for some explosive sex scenes.

The writing definitely improved over the three books, it looks like the first one came out four years or so ago, and the author has been working on her style. I would recommend this series, just know that they are a little undefined in their storylines, and this third one is by far the best of the three. I did enjoy my weekend reading though!

I wish I wasn't so rigid.

Unlike the first two books this one is written in 1st person pov. Why I do not know, but I just can't get into the book as a result. Who changes from writing books 1-2 in 3rd person pov to 1st pov in the third book of a series? I don't understand.

3.5 stars round up.

I must admit, I didn't quite recalled Jerry's voice as clearly to make a sound judgement. But I will say that I like Lee's voice over Jerry's. Lee seems lighter and more playful, as if he no longer carried the weight of the world. It was fun reading from Lee's POV as he went through his recuperation processes with his dry sense of humour and his observations.

Mrs. Flynn, Jean, was a delight to read. She came far from being an absentee, alcoholic mother by turning into a strong, accepting, and loving mother. She was also as sharp as her son, calm and cool under duress, and posses the kind of wisdom that came from pulling yourself up after hitting rock bottom. She manage to self-reflect and became stronger for it.

I do liked how the MCs relationship seems to move forward, despite Lee's amnesia. They explore new territories with each other in more ways than one. I appreciate that we gets to read them talking things out. Instead of simply fucking each other into an understanding. I mean, we got that too, but they also talked things out afterward unlike in Mary Calmes books.

Above are the good points. The downside of this book is that the majority is about Lee recuperating and not directly involve with any investigations. Some of the plot thread continued from the second book, with a handful of new plots introduced in this book. I am not sure about the new villain... I suppose it was because there wasn't enough of him for me to want this new plot points, when there were others left hanging.

The pacing was a bit slow at times but, for me, seems to picked up just as I thought I would take a break.

This series kept me guessing what directions it was taking, I supposed that should be a good point but I also felt like the *surprises* and *plot-twists* came out of the left field. Perhaps it is because the characters weren't as strong as some other character driven series that I felt each book seems disjointed. Unlike Cut & Run series, which I seems to want to beg for more whether it will be about their daily lives or their new adventures.

This book ended with a return to the hanging plot from the first book. The very thing that Ami complained about. Not to mention the introduction of new villain, the implications, etc. I am certain that Ms. Madison have plans for the fourth book. But I am not certain how or if she will progressed all the plot points left opened so far.

of the 3 books, i liked this one the best because we get to see some emotion from john and find out that he's not the complete a$$hole i thought he was in books 1 & 2. there is absolutely nothing about the original serial killer until the very end which essentially lends to the cliffy-ish ending. i'm not sure how much i can say here without spoiling too much of the other books or this story but the ending with the bad guy was a bit anticlimactic after a huge build up that was actually pretty good. the author literally switched gears right after that anticlimax and switched back to the original serial killer plot. and now we're back to waiting for the next book, which you can't not read because you need to know what happens with both plots now.

this can be a little spoiler-ish so i'm hiding it

I enjoyed this book a little more than the others but it still had problems for me. I just could not get into calling Jerry, Lee. It made me think we had a new character but I knew there wasn’t. However, there was still basically no reference to the unsolved serial killer case that brought Flynn into the book. I really think the author needs to address this issue. That being said I enjoyed the basics of this book but am still confused by the name of it. I also enjoyed the author writing style and loved both Jerry (Lee) and Flynn. I loved Jerry’s (Lee’s) dry humor and that still come to light in this book even though he has lost some of his memory. It was great to meat Flynn mother and loved her from the beginning. Overall a really great book.

I think I might like this book even better than the first two. Because Lee couldn't work, we get to see the guys in a more relaxed setting and dealing with John's mom, her bookclub, and her lover Charles. But there is still plenty of suspense regarding the strange artifacts, including info about their origin and other people who may know about them.

Yes, there ARE consequences once Lee gets his memories back and discovers John has been able to read him all this time. I thought that both the truth and the consequences were well handled and evolved their relationship greatly.

The ending of the book is not a cliffhanger at all, but we do see the setup for the next book. Poor Sarah Madison, we will clamor for more, more, more! Hopefully she can get the next installment to us soon.

I didn't enjoy 50% of this book. AND it ended in the middle of a scene -

I am so completely done with books that do that. You don't see major authors doing that-why do these MM authors think that is good marketing? (thanks Riptide)

These authors should keep in mind if people get sick of paying for books that end in the middle of a scene they won't be paying for the next book.

Just saying...
