New York City socialite Becky Campbell inherited more than a speck of her father’s wanderlust. Now his murder bequeaths her a mystery, a ramshackle homestead, and a silver mine.

Zeke Graumann signs on as Becky’s foreman to keep his portion of his family’s ranch. He shares the workers’ reservations about a woman boss, especially one who burns water and prances around in dungarees. Even though she did look awful good in the dungarees.

Then a series of accidents add threat to tension. Can Becky trust Zeke, find her father’s killer, and turn her mine into a profitable venture? Will Zeke be forced to give up his ranching dream to win Becky’s heart?

“With a feisty heroine and a secret hero, sparks fly.” —Lena Nelson Dooley, editor, speaker, and author of fifty Christian novels

Adventure and romance fill this late-nineteenth century Colorado story, Double Jeopardy. Even though I’ve never cared much for Western fiction, the novel hooked me in and held me fast. An undercurrent of suspense kept me turning the page and the intriguing characters came to life. At times I wanted to scream, scold her, and cheer for this strong-willed woman until she finally meets her match in a handsome cowboy. Go ahead ... get yourself lassoed by Donna’s story. You won’t sleep a wink.”

A fun Western story set in a mining town in Silver Valley, Colorado. Clean romance with a touch of tongue-in-cheek humor.

Enjoyed the read as relaxing and well written and knows enough about the subject, time and place not to make a lot of silly errors. Yes, for the most part you will know where the story is going, but not exactly how it gets there with bits of excitement, danger, mix-ups and so on along the way. Becky does have some issues seeing things as they really are, but she pulls herself up short of acting stupidly on the basis of them, and she learns. I did feel that Zeke occasionally lapsed into less literate conversation than he really was used to, "taking hick-ish" you might say, and it was not done as if on purpose so I think the story could have done better without that. It it is a clean book, no foul language, rather clean violence even-although people did get killed, the reader does not go through that part in case that bothers you. We do not find out what happened when the paid 'preacher' shows up, and that is a bit of a hole in things I felt, as something surely had to happen with a bit of a kerfuffle. It is not a major thing in the overall story- just a loose string. Since I read this in the COVID quarantine, it was nice to have a pleasant, light read with a hea ending.

When Becky Campbell travels from New York City society to join her adventurous father at his silver mine in Colorado, she is sadly disappointed. She has to contend with the fact that he was murdered and she has little means or know how to keep up the mine. She is like a fish out of water but tries very hard to make a go of things with the help of two hired hands and a handsome farmer, Zeke Graumann.
The author captures the quirkinesses and struggles of Miss Becky and the honesty and steadfastness of our hero Zeke. With humor and colloquial sayings and an easy faith thread, this book is lots of fun. But the plot thickens when “accidents” happen at the mine. Who is out to undermine the mine? And when a mix-up sends Becky’s mother on a long train ride to join her...... she needs a groom FAST!
See what antics abound in this well written story of the old west.

Double Jeopardy is an enjoyable story that takes readers back to the days of Colorado mining in the old west. Heroine Becky travels to Colorado to help her father with his mining endeavors, only to learn the task has been left to here alone. Zeke is a cowboy who hires on to help Becky, but they both run into unforeseen circumstances that are both mysterious and dangerous.

Author Donna Schlachter brings two characters together from different worlds and demonstrates how they can work together for a common goal while facing many obstacles – like murder. Not only that, the New York City socialite and the Colorado cowboy develop a romance neither of them expected.

Having been born and raised outside of New York City myself, and now living in Colorado, this book was a fun read for me! I would recommend Double Jeopardy to readers who enjoy 19th century historical novels with strong female characters, charming cowboys, and mysterious occurrences.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy and am leaving an honest review.

So Becky leaves NYC to join her father in his Colorado silver mine (without telling him she's coming) so she can spend some time with him. She arrives in a small mining town to discover her father's dead and left nothing to her. She buys her father's mine at a high price without even finding out if it's a good mine, using practically her last dollar, to spite her rich, socialite mother. She can't work the mine (let alone cook), so she has to hire 3 men to work the mine. The hero's family has a very successful cattle operation going and he needs a little money to expand his portion, but we jump forward a month only to find him so smitten with Becky that he's considering sinking his own money into her mine when he's pretty sure the mine will never make more than enough to just pay the men. She's now in debt because she's been foolish with her money, plus she was proud and judgmental. The hero may be honorable and supportive, but he also seems a fool to me. I don't think this story is for me.

Enjoyable story set in a mining town called Silver Valley in the 1880's, "Double Jeopardy" gives readers a strong, sassy heroine, western adventures, a wily cowboy and a murder mystery. The action is well timed and the characters play off each other wonderfully. The historical research is top notch and the reader is pulled right in to Becky's whirlwind life. I love to see strong female leads who stood up against the norm and succeeded. Zeke is attracted to the unconventional Becky and it was good to see their relationship grow over time, but not have a typical "see it coming" ending. Great read with great dialogue, characters and history.

I was an early reader, thanks to Smitten Publishers. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a review.

Double Jeopardy

This is a very good western. It is also a Christian mystery. It's everything I love in a great book. Rebecca's is a high society young woman who was born and raised in New York. Her mother is a very socialite and wealthy woman. Her father is an adventurer. Becky is an only child. Her father hasn't made contact with them in a while and Becky decides to go to Silver City,Colorado in search for him. All she knows is that he has a silver mine there. When she arrives, she is told that he has been killed. Who would do this and why? What will become of Becky and her mother? There is danger, mystery, greed and love. I recommend this book to everyone who likes westerns and mysteries. I give it 5 stars.

Loved this book…an appealing and satisfying story about a strong female character, Becky, a New Yorker turned Colorado miner, who meets an equally strong cowboy, Zeke, and falls in love. The story set in 1880 is historically factual, since in that time period women were allowed to make land claims, even if they weren’t allowed to vote. Along with the love story is a murder mystery. Someone wants to drive Becky into abandoning the silver mine she takes over from her deceased father. The villain makes many attempts to sabotage the mine and endanger her employees. Becky must solve the mystery of her father’s death and figure out who is trying to drive her from her father’s mine, as well.

Another great book Double Jeopardy is an historical romantic suspense set in Colorado in the 1880's what a great book about a woman who went to find her dad in a small mining town ! There she meets The man who will protect her from all the mining accidents. Becky and Zeke make a great couple in this book! Becky is faced with many challenges but she never backs down. I gave this a 5 star because it is such a great book one that when you pick it up you don't want to put it down. It is a page turner. I was given an advanced copy of this book and what I have posted in this review was of my own accord Donna has done it again with another great book!

Strong willed lady, strong supportive man

A must read for adventurous hearts and those who desire a more narrow road. I love a book that isn’t all about the obvious and normal ways of life. I believe young females have always had a desire to be more than just prim and proper social lights and debutants. I like that there are young ladies in a good read with ambition and a desire for more in life than a kitchen and laundry. What’s more it’s refreshing to have a male character remain chivalrous yet be strongly supportive. What’s even greater is in the end with all the struggles, trials and hard work their faith in one another paid off big time.

A lovely read which follows the story of Becky Campbell, who travelled from New York City to Colorado to join her father, but ended up with an unpleasant surprise. While taking charge of her father's mine, she meets Zeke, a charming cowboy who will assist her endeavours (and they slowly fall in love along the way!).

Couldn't put it down at the start, reached a bit of a slow-down in interest around chapter 13 however picked up again fairly quickly. The ending felt slightly rushed to wrap things up, but the book overall was a lovely, clean, intriguing read with a happy ending.

Would recommend.

This is a wonderful story that takes place in in a mining town in Colorado 1880. This story is a wonderful historical romance with some mystery thrown in. Becky is a feisty young woman and Zeke is secretive. Becky finds herself in an adventure she hadn’t counted on. But Zeke is more than willing to help the city girl out. There are some interesting twists and turns along the way, keeping the reader engaged. I thoroughly enjoyed this story of adventure, redemption and humor. I don’t want to ruin the story for you, just know that when you start reading you will not want to put this delightful book down. I encourage you to follow the adventure of Becky and Zeke, you won’t regret it.

Double Jeopardy

Becky leaves New York to go to Colorado where her father is mining silver. You see he doesn’t need money he is just a restless man and his wife understands that to keep him happy he needs to go do things.
When Becky arrives she learns that her father was killed. The sheriff returns everything but his ring. Which is missing.

Zeke started working for Becky at the mine. Accidents happen, she can’t cook and nearly poisoned the men working for her with the food.

I enjoyed reading this book. It’s a clean romance, with a bit of mystery.

I received a free advance review copy of this book and am voluntarily providing my honest review. Becky takes over her late fathers mine, not knowing anything about mining. She hires Zeke and 2 diggers. The sparks fly between her and Zeke, but neither wants to acknowledge them. This is a great clean read, hard to put down because something is always happening. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.

One day. That’s how long it took me to read this book. I haven’t read a book in a day in a LONG time. Most just haven’t been able to keep my attention. But Ms. Schlachter did an excellent job arresting and holding my focus. I loved Becky and Zeke’s story. Their angst, reactions, and dialogue seemed realistic to me, and I definitely enjoyed the banter between Becky and Zeke.

*I received this book from the author/publisher for the purpose of review. The above is my honest opinion.

A lovely read with a novel plot

This novel was well written, with little to no grammatical errors. Historical research was obviously thorough. The plot was well developed, as were the characters. Some aspects were easy to anticipate but this isn't a who-done-it mystery novel either. There were a few places that didn't flow perfectly or could have been developed a bit better. However, it was a fun, exciting, and unique book definitely worth a read!

Predictable

I enjoyed reading this story, but I felt it was predictable, even down to the mothers coming in together and everyone getting along except for the murderer. Seems a little strange that Becky's friend just happened to mention the argument she overheard at the end. Especially when that was the missing piece of the puzzle. I did like Zeke's family dynamics and the hard work portrayed by beckie. A well.written story

Things do not work out as expected when Becky Cambell goes to Silver Valley, Colorado to spend some time with her father. This family-friendly tale of the old west was bedtime reading for almost two weeks, but could probably be read in a weekend. I received an ARC and this voluntary review is my own opinion.

Double Jeopardy draws readers into a lovely story with well-developed characters who create a believeable narrative. The plot produces a good amount of twists and turns to keep a reader guessing as to who killed Becky's father, what will be the fate of her mine, and will she marry her handsome cowboy. A fun and fast read.

This book is well-written. I loved the plot of this book. I had never read anything like it before. The characters were well developed and relatable. You can tell a lot of research went into this book. It was more....shall we say...it had more teeth than others I have read. That's a great thing.

Becky Campbell is a strong, determined woman, proving she can do a "man's" job and be very successful. I don't usually read westerns, but I would recommend this one. I loved the historic details and the story is fascinating.
