It Is No Dream

Rate this book
We see the clear picture in the Hebrew Scriptures-God calls the Jewish people to proclaim His name, bless the world, and eventually give us our Messiah. But have you ever wondered why God chose the Jewish people? And why, after all these years, are they back in their ancient land? For the Jewish people, the vision of returning to their land never waned. Their prophets proclaimed it in God's Word. They held to the hope during years of dispersion and persecution. Their story isn't over.
The answer is written in God's Word and it is our duty to know and tell it.

Five out of ten.

Books like this are hard to rate. Suffice it to say that even though I believe the Jewish people have been permanently set apart for God and I believe they will have a homeland on this planet someday, I still don't know where I stand in relation to the modern State of Israel. And this book didn't help. It's quite readable, to be sure, and it includes lots of photographs, many of them in colour. But parts of it, especially the more speculative chapters at the end, are little more than propaganda for McQuaid's particular style of premillenialist eschatology.

I recommend the first half of this book to evangelical Christians seeking context for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

After our trip to Israel, I found myself thinking I would like to know more about how the modern state came to be. I was aware of the general outline, but wanted to dig deeper. At the same time, I didn't want to dig so deep that I'd end up reading 600 page scholarly discussions of the Balfour Declaration. A neighbor dropped off this book, and I found it did a great job of filling in the blanks for me.

Highly recommended if you are interested in the formation of the modern state of Israel. Great overview of the history of Israel and the Jewish people, from Abraham until today. In only 220 pages or so, it manages to convey a lot of information. It tells about the fall of Jerusalem, the diaspora, the shameful abuse of Jews for millennia, and the worsening conditions in 19th century Russia and elsewhere that prompted the Zionist movement. It then traces that movement through the breakup of the Ottoman Empire, World War II, the establishment of an independent Israel, and the major wars Israel has had to fight to defend its existence. It explains relevant prophecies, and emphatically explains why Israel should be important to Christians today. Even if you do not share the author's eschatological views, this is a great overview of how the modern state of Israel came to be here today.
