Liu Tongyi was a Chinese novelist, essayist, poet and literary critic who writes under the pseudonym Liu Yichang (劉以鬯). He did not grow up in Hong Kong but spent the first thirty years of his life either there or in the wartime capital Chungking, where he went upon graduating from the English-speaking St John's University in 1941. It was in Chungking that he took up the profession of newspaper editing which he practised more or less continuously until his retirement in 1991. Liu came to Hong Kong in 1948, and apart from a spell in Singapore and Malaya (1952-1957), has made it his home.

I watched 《花样年华》yesterday immediately after finishing this, and I think it’s fascinating how tonally similar the two stories are despite having very little in common otherwise (apart from the HK setting, or the opening/closing intertitles). Still kind of skeptical about the novel’s structure as a tête-bêche; I think the decision to convert this into a short story later on was probably for the better. But am looking forward to reading more of Liu Yichang!

Translation of Liu Yichang's 對倒 (1975) from Chinese to English by Nancy Li. The short story translated to Intersection or Tête-bêche is purportedly one of the inspirations behind Wong Kar Wai's iconic film In The Mood For Love .
A snapshot of 1970s cosmopolitan Hong Kong with 2 protagonists Xing and Bai Chunyu whose lives intersect on parallel tracks, it will undoubtedly evoke nostalgia for those who lived through those times. Note there is significant male gaze and the FMC is written as rather vapid. The story structure is interesting with the French idea of postage stamps laid end to end. 3.5⭐️

Sapendo che questo breve racconto ha ispirato il film "in the mood for love", durante la lettura avevo in testa le atmosfere e i colori del film.
La trama è molto diversa dal film, anche se il tema dell'incontro casuale rimane. Un incontro che in questo libro però non porterà mai a nessuna conversazione (o alcun tipo di relazione e direi gisutamente, vista la giovane età della protagonista...). Un libro sicuramente evocativo, il quale, molto probabilmente, ho apprezzato grazie al film. Le descrizioni di Hong Kong e dei suoi abitanti, che diventano quasi critica sociale sono state la parte che ho preferito di più in questo racconto.

This could have been a shiny little jewel if not for two blemishes: the lame, lame ending with its clunky metaphor hammering the point home (for the three-year-old reader, I guess?); and the intolerable shallowness of the female protagonist. I haven't read anyhting else by Liu Yichang, and I sincerely hope he didn't write all his female characters like this.
In Italy at least, this short novelette has been shamelessly merchandised as the inspiration for Wong Kar Wai's In The Mood For Love, which is incidentally true, and what's not to like about one of my favourite movies of all times? So I picked this book up and quickly realised that whatever the director saw in the story must have gone lost in translation.
Or, rather, I can see how the ephemeral crossing of two very different paths, destined to touch and separate without ever having understood each other, must have resonated with Wong Kar wai's poetics of loss and impossible beauty, but the parallels stop here. The movie and the book are two very different beasts.

This said, there is beauty in the way the man sees his past superimpressed on modern Hong Kong; sadly, there is no beauty in the air-headed obsesssion of his young female counterpart with her own image and her own maladaptive day-dreaming about future fame, wedding and handsome boys. While the male character is a well-rounded and complex mature figure, the young woman looks like a male-gaze fantasy about young women in sexual heat. Quite dated innit.

The structure would be also interesting, with chapters alternating the characters' points of view, accentuating their different reactions to the same people and the same events, closing in on each other, meeting without ever really communicating if not, him in a dream, or without understanding each other, and finally going each their own way. It's a pity that HER subjective experience is repulsive, written by an old pig with a nymphette complex.

Probably, the best aspect of this novella is the depiction, through the man's musings and memories, of social and economic change in Hong Kong in the twenty years between the war and the present day of the narration, together with a skecthed but poignant depiction of the struggles of Chinese immigrants running from the war and the constant preoccupation of Hong Kong culture with money and wealth, be it currency speculation or real estate hoarding.

Another interesting theme, emerging once again from the man's perspective, is happiness as possible only in the past, through memory. When the man bursts in laughter during the wedding scene at the movies the woman judges him an old lecher, due to a previous misunderstanding; and how sad and really reminiscent of In The Mood For Love is the distance between the vulgarity of the world and the melancholy of the man's actual thoughts, going back to his own wedding and to the hope and happiness he had felt that day, with such a strong sense of loss that he cannot but laugh at the silver screen depicting a shiny lie.

《對倒》以描寫兩個截然不同的人的一天穿插而成--一個章節寫中年男子淳于白,下一個章節寫十多歲出頭的少女亞杏,再下一章節又回到淳于白。雖然兩人世界觀、生活背景都不同,但卻生長在同一社會,故此看見的事物相似甚至重疊。兩人走過同樣的街道,感受到同一個城市的愛好與醜惡。作者劉以鬯安排兩人相遇於戲院的鄰座,但這相遇毫無美感。淳于白對少女亞杏有少許好感--呼應了社會對中年大叔的核版印象--然而亦沒有想認識她的打算;亞杏對淳于白則接近厭惡,只覺他是一個不專心看電影的好色中年漢。兩人相遇,但最後卻向相反方向離場。就像我們在日常生活遇見過的他、她和ta。

淳于白和亞杏的分野遠大於年齡,他們活的人生就似是矛和盾。淳于白以回憶從前的生活支撐現在的自己,前往香港的經歷、與夜總會女生的交往、去南洋工作、與前往美國讀書的兒子分別⋯⋯無論回憶是苦是樂,他都樂於遊走其中,不想未來。亞杏則不同,她整天就是對未來的幻想--成為當紅女星,跟英俊的男子結婚。想的東西是不同,但相同的是,兩人的生活都極其依靠想像支撐。

兩人同樣是過著充滿想像的一天,然而下一天,可能兩人跟今天都不再一樣。淳于白於晚上遇到舊朋友,得知友人正在努力工作。兩人共進晚飯,言談間淳于白透露欣賞之情,與自己靠收租渡日的生活作對比。明天的淳于白會因為這對話而不同嗎?他會變得「現實」嗎?亞杏於晚上被母親請求到工廠上班,母親以淚相求,亞杏無言以對。明天的亞杏又會如何?

從《對倒》中的淳于白和亞杏的心理狀況,可以窺探六七十年代的香港社會。兩人是當時典型的香港人,淳于白從中國南下來香港,見證香港的經濟發展,即使搭一程巴士也可以引發對城市變遷的無限感慨。他早年「獅子山精神」地工作而忽視家人,繼而只好無奈地在思憶中遊走。亞杏對未來的想像只有物質和表面的--成為富有的人、受人追捧的女星、英俊男子的老婆,自身與社會的關係、內在的修養都不是她會關注的事情。這種美好生活的定義,某程度反映了經濟至上的社會主流。

《對倒》讓我反思我和別人可能都在自己不察覺的方面十分相似,因為我們都是時代下的產物。它亦讓我思考應如何活在當下,經歷構成現在的自己,希望驅動當下。但當一切流於空想,便會構成煩厭(重覆讀到亞杏的幻想確讓我有這樣的感覺)。感到煩厭的可能是旁人,但只有空想的結果,最後最煩厭最無奈的便是自己。

[...] recordaba esos años que se esfumaron. Esos día pasados eran algo que sólo podía mirar a través de un ventanal sucio; algo que podía ver, más no tocar. Todo lo que veía era borroso e indistinguible.

¿Cómo no leer la novela que inspiró la película más famosa Wong Kar-wai? ¿Cómo no fascinarme ante este relato, que poco tiene en común con la relación que vemos en pantalla entre Maggie Cheung y Tony Leung, y que solo demuestra el genio del director de cine chino-hongkonés? ¿Cómo no cautivarme por la manera en la que la vida es eso: una intersección del futuro con el pasado, de personas con las que nos encontramos todos los días y que pueden ser o no ser nuestros confidentes, pero sobre todo de las emociones humanas?

No hay duda que Liu Yichang es un proustiano, ya que en su relato los objetos son aquellos que se mantienen fijos ante la memoria, y evocan no solo el pasado, sino que activan la idealización o la imaginación del futuro. Es así como dos personajes, completamente distintos, se entrecruzan en una tarde cualquiera, sin siquiera convivir, pero al final del día su relación es tan estrecha que pasan a formar parte de la vida del otro. Dos puntos en una gráfica, que por más distantes que estén, deben cruzar caminos en algún momento. Pasado y futuro dan origen al presente, al mismo tiempo demuestran los estados pasajeros del ser humano, y demuestran que solo la sensibilidad es aquella que puede ser universal y atemporal. Finalmente, el escenario, Hong Kong, otro punto de intersección: el lugar donde Oriente se encuentra con Occidente. ¡Liu Yichang es un genio!

Una historia sin historia, solo una metáfora. Momentos banales vistos desde el punto de vista de la juventud de una chica, y la madurez de un señor, afrontar la vida pensando en el futuro, y afrontarla viviendo en el pasado. El deseo de llegar a amar, y la pena de no haberlo conseguido.
Suena bien, pero es un libro tremendamente tedioso. No me atrevería a decir malo, pero aburrido seguro.

以兩線故事並行、穿插的方式描寫香港在年長者與年輕人眼中的樣子。兩個故事主線在中途稍為交會,然後再度分岔。故事較為平淡,但敘述手法相當特別。

短短一篇小說,讓人回味70、80年代香港小市民的生活點滴。或許我們都曾經在街上遇過一些似曾相識的人,eh,看著面善,到底我們的人生什麼時候交會 cross path過呢?原來每一個遇見都不是偶然,背後交織著的竟然是無數的擦肩而過。遇見只是一瞬間,可得來不易呢!

It's an interesting cinematic structure for a short story. As usual with the nostalgic old Hong Kong air Lau gave to his writings, it's a good read to indulge urself to hong kong in the 80s

They met briefly without exchanging a dialogue. They went on to their separate lives without knowing each other. Yet they seem to face a similar life in the old Hong Kong. No idea how this book transforms into the greatest movie “In the mood for love”.

Desiderato per molto tempo in quanto ammiratrice di Wong Kar Wai. Nonostante abbia colto la scintilla che ha ispirato il regista, non c’è paragone con la sua produzione.
Il libro resta molto in superficie, è un dolce vedo/non vedo.
Forse dovrei approfondire la letteratura asiatica.

L’auteur voulait nous faire détester ses personnages je pense
La partie pédophilie je comprends pas ? Wong kar wai utilise le roman pour le Hong Kong vintage et la trope des deux personnages qui fréquentent les mêmes lieux mais qui ne se voient/parlent pas mais autrement je comprends pas le lien avec le film…
Y’a une ambiance particulière au livre mais jsp ce que ça a pu changer en moi?

Hong Kong Blues

Liu Yichang, nome d'arte di Lau Tongyi, 92enne romanziere nativo di Shanghai e residente a Hong Kong, deve la fama internazionale a quest’unico racconto, cui è ispirato In the Mood for Love (2000) di Wong Kar-wai. Da un altro romanzo di Liu Yichang, Il bevitore, è tratto il film seguente del regista, 2046.

Purtroppo né Il bevitore2046 sono disponibili in biblioteca, quindi il confronto multimediale si limiterà a Un incontro e In the Mood for Love. Wong ha azzeccato una serie di scelte, che dovrebbero fare scuola:
• un testo buono, ma non un capolavoro; in modo da assicurarsi un margine di miglioramento. Possibilmente uscire perfino vincente dal paragone con l’originale.
• un racconto e non un romanzo. Di conseguenza il film aggiunge dettagli ed episodi, al contrario di quanto solitamente accade con le trasposizioni cinematografiche.
• ispirazione e non trasposizione. La trama del film è molto diversa da quella del racconto.

I protagonisti della storia sono Chunyu Bai, un uomo ormai stagionato, e Ya Xing, una giovane non ancora adulta. Lui vive di ricordi, lei di sogni. Passato e futuro: nel corso di una giornata dei primi ’60 si sfiorano ripetutamente sulle strade di Hong Kong, senza mai toccarsi, senza un vero contatto. Lei è nata nella città; lui vi si è trasferito dalla nativa Shanghai vent’anni prima, con il peggiorare della “situazione al fronte, a nord del fiume Yangzi”. Chunyu Bai ripensa costantemente a quel periodo: ondate d’immigrati, sovraffollamento, boom edilizio, mancanza di lavoro, speculazione. Si trova a rimpiangere l’epoca delle palazzine costruite di scarti edilizi a Kowloon, ora rimpiazzate dai grattacieli. v. anche citazione: http://bit.ly/r52rRo Inevitabile chiedersi quanto di autobiografico Liu Yichang abbia messo nei suoi ricordi.

Nonostante le apparenze, questo racconto è una riflessione su Hong Kong e sulla sua storia. Il commento sociale va in profondità, com’è chiaro dal simbolismo già esposto.

Wong Kar-wai ha riproposto a suo modo la riflessione sulla città, spersonalizzandola, riposizionandola nell’intera vicenda, nei suoi dettagli: stanze subaffitate a giovani coppie, diverse tradizioni delle varie comunità di immigrati, cibo ― il progetto originario del regista era narrare i mutamenti dei rapporti interpersonali, specialmente tra i sessi, mediante il cibo ed alcune innovazioni come il bollitore per il riso e le tagliatelle istantanee: http://bit.ly/kkzEuW Ma nel film manca l’immagine potente del passato e del futuro di HK che si sfiorano senza incontrarsi, senza conoscersi e ri-conoscersi (inoltre al racconto darei una stella in più solamente per l'immagine finale).
In the Mood for Love ha altri meriti: in primis l’atmosfera d’antan rarefatta, languida, sospesa, elegante. Quell’atmosfera è assente nel testo, e chi ha visto la pellicola ne sentirà la mancanza. Il racconto ha una sua eleganza, un suo registro dimesso, ma alcune ripetizioni stancano pur nella brevità del testo: chissà com’è l’originale cinese.
Per inciso, Wong Kar-wai ha poi proseguito il sottile commento sulle vicende di HK: il 2046 segnerà la fine dei 50 anni di autogoverno garantiti alla città dall'autorità cinese.

In occasione dell'uscita del film Wong ha curato un'edizione a tiratura limitata del racconto, corredato da immagini del film e da un'intervista a Liu:

Da parte sua, Einaudi non ha mancato di sfruttare l’hype: fascetta pubblicitaria, fotogramma in copertina (molto bello tra l’altro) e in quarta un blurb della Aspesi per il film.
Oltre ovviamente al prezzo: €8 per un testo da millelire.

"Intersection" is an evocative glimpse of an afternoon in Hong Kong, in the early 70s. This short story follows the thoughts and dreams of two strangers as they move throughout the city and have a chance meeting.

Text note: I do not have a copy of the book. "Intersection" is in the DVD booklet of *In the Mood for Love* (Criterion, 2002) and must have inspired the director Wong Kar-wai. It was translated by Nanci Li in the 1988 issue of Renditions (a "Chinese-English Translation Magazine"). Many out-of-print volumes of the magazine are available for free on the publisher's website.

A timeless novel richly packed with details of Hong Kong which I could resonate with, and reminded me of Haruki Murakami's narration style. Playing with the concept of "Tête-bêche", the thoughts and encounters of the two protagonists reflect social issues and trends of Hong Kong at that time.

创作于70年代的小说,背景设定在60年代。在80年代被改编成了一出短剧(Beyond,林正英,李丽蕊),2000年时激发了王家卫开拍“花样年华”的灵感。

我应该在懵懂岁月里看过“花样年华”,雾里看花不甚解。如今读“对倒”第一遍,单觉引人入胜,但是入戏不够深。有些书是要抽出时间细读慢嚼的,“对倒”属于这一类。不同的时段,怀抱不同心情去阅读,会不期然地遇见深浅不一的感动。

这本书也罗织了对作品的一些赏析文章,让读者能够以更广的视野,不同的角度来欣赏这部作品。

Finished it before break! I think I enjoyed the short story more than the novel. Was a good level for my Chinese practice. Enjoyed the themes of loneliness and intercrossing in the city.
