هذه الترجمة العربية لكتاب مهم عن حرب أكتوبر صدر باللغة العبرية وأثار ضجة كبيرة في المجتمع الإسرائيلي.

وقد لاحظ مؤلف الكتاب أن التفسيرات الإسرائيلية التي أعطيت لتبرير هزيمة الجيش الإسرائيلي في حرب 1973م تفسيرات ضعيفة لا تتناسب أبدًا مع هذا الحدث الهائل في تاريخ العسكرية الإسرائيلية، ولم تفد في الكشف عن جوانب التقصير التنظيمية والمخابراتية من جانب الجيش الإسرائيلي، ولا في تحليل عنصر المفاجأة وكيفية حدوثها. ويحاول المؤلف أن يربط الهزيمة والمفاجأة بأحداث وتطورات عميقة حدثت للمجتمع الإسرائيلي على المستويات السياسية والأيديولوجية والأخلاقية.

وقد حدد المؤلف هدفه في إعادة اختبار المسلمات التي أحطت بالمفاجأة التى وقعت في الحرب ومحاولة فهم ظاهرة المفاجأة الاستراتيجية وأسباب وقوعها وفشل أجهزة المخابرات الرسمية في كشفها.

Zvi Lanir (צבי לניר) (born October 10, 1936 ) is the founder and president of the Praxis Company and a developer of "The Basic Surprise" theory and its implications for combining thinking and management strategies and author of The Reason of Reason for Late Maturity in Human Life.

Zvi Lanir was born and raised in Haifa and is a graduate of Halutz High School . The military service began as a member of Nahal Nuclear and was sent to the Nuclear Training Corps and then to the Officers Course. He held various commanding positions in combat units and, after completing his position as a company commander in the Golani Brigade , was sent by the IDF for academic studies. After completing his bachelor's degree in political science, economics and sociology at Tel Aviv University, he moved to the Intelligence Corps and served in a number of positions where he was much involved in the theory of Intelligence and under the guidance of intelligence officers, during which he also completed his Master's degree in Military History at Tel Aviv University.
