From the author of the bestselling Psychic Surveys series, comes a brand new series of STANDALONE novels, set in and around the WORLD'S MOST HAUNTED PLACES and BLENDING FACT WITH FICTION. In Book Three discover Highgate, perhaps the most famous cemetery in the world, renowned for its Victorian Gothic splendour, famous residents, its vampire and, of course, ghosts... NB: With sometimes harrowing scenes, this is her darkest novel yet and not for the faint-hearted!
Lucy Klein, 42, is not only obsessed with Highgate, she works there too, organising tours for those with an interest in some of the finest Victorian funerary architecture in existence. Single, and on the shy side, she is nonetheless content with her life, or so she thinks. When she meets the enigmatic Zak Harborne, she realises what she's been missing and quickly falls in love. He's everything she's ever wanted...isn't he?
1972, and Emma Matthews, a 19-year-old history student, also feels as though she's on the outside. After visiting a derelict Highgate with a group of friends, she starts to feel a connection, a sense of meaning to her life, in amongst the tombstones, the crosses and the angels. Returning to Highgate over and over, she discovers both a paradise and a garden decidedly more savage.
Grace Derby is just 11 when she encounters the gentleman, tall and with a tall hat, a long black coat and a cape about his shoulders. It is the 1850s and street urchins such as her are not accustomed to kindness from those belonging to the upper echelons. Proffering money for food, for her and her family, he asks nothing in return. Curious about the man with the kind blue eyes, she follows him one day... all the way to Highgate.

HIGHGATE (This Haunted World #3), by Shani Struthers, blends historical fiction, horror, and the supernatural. Using three timelines, we are "witnesses" to three distinct female characters that are drawn to Highgate Cemetery.
Of the three, the one from the 1800's, Grace, pulled on me emotionally the most. The historical fiction component really hits hard when you realize the conditions--and sometimes abuse--that young children and families faced back then.
The middle timeline never really connected with me as well, and the current timeline--with Lucy--was the main part of the book.
Two out of the three main characters I felt were excellent, and third just felt like she was there to show us another "haunting" episode. The atmosphere was fantastic throughout all the timelines, and I really enjoyed "seeing the change of the condition of Highgate through the years.
My only real issue was that--despite the obvious ghosts--this was more an emotionally draining tale, than anything. Yes, there were supernatural events, but these were secondary to the "live" storylines of the tragedies in the past. This was a well written novel, I just wish I could have enjoyed the paranormal aspects more. Instead, the sorrow and depression of the times/characters was the pertinent feeling I was left with.
Overall, a good read, just one that was more "sorrow" than "supernatural" in my opinion.
Told in a mixture of chapters based in the 1800's 1970's and the present day, the story explores the links between three females and their connection to Highgate cemetery.
As always with Shani's writing you feel as though you are there in the story watching events unfold. Be it the Victorian slums, or Highgate itself, the descriptive passages give plenty of detail without taking over the book.
I found the idea connecting Lucy, Emma and Grace a really interesting one and one I believe in. After all, energy doesn't die, it just changes forms. The ending was very tense and emotional and I was pleased that the women to whom the book is dedicated to, finally got their headstone after being nameless for so long.
You can always rely on Shani for some thought provoking and suspense filled supernatural fiction, and with Highgate she's produced some of her best work so far.
Wow, what an amazing book. I literally couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting. It’s set in the atmospheric iconic Highgate Cemetery. It’s beautifully written and once again it’s obvious the author has done detailed research. It mixes fact with fiction in a way that works really well. It’s set in three time zones with three main characters and it seamlessly weaves between the historically different intriguing scenarios. Within the story are hardline issues of forced prostitution and also domestic abuse which make for some dark scenes but there is nothing gratuitous about it. Its more highlighting injustice to woman that has occurred over the years and unfortunately continues to happen. It’s a story that will stay with me for a very long time and it’s a well deserved five stars for this talented author.
I have read all of Shani’s books and this one has to be the best one yet. Darker than the rest and thought provoking, it is a brilliant story that draws the reader in.
Shani has done it again created a story that brings you in to each part of the tale. This is split between 3 storyline timelines and as usual well written and thought out. Highgate seems to be an imposing cemetery but beautiful too from her description thank you for writing this Shani
I read this book in 24 hours I could not put it down. At times it is uncomfortable reading but it does accurately reflect the victims of domestic abuse and the insidious methods to isolate and control by the perpetrator. Supernatural aspect are measured and not exaggerated making them believable.
The third of the Haunted World series and the first set in England, is a superb addition to the already impressive portfolio of Shani Struthers. It's also, arguably, the most brutal and hard hitting. Set in the present day, with regular back stories from the 1850s and 1970s, the story centres around Highgate cemetery tour guide Lucy as she meets new handsome stranger Zak. To say too much would risk spoilers but amid prostitution and abuse lies a battle between good and evil across the decades and leaving the reader with a couple of "What If?" questions. Highgate is certainly harrowing at times and a shift away from the slightly less brutal Psychic Surveys series but the story, the dedication and the afterword will remain with me for a while yet!
I could not put this book down, literally, I read it in one sitting. Very difficult subjects covered in a very sensitive way and a hauntingly beautiful description of Highgate that makes me want to visit. Another superb book from Shani Struthers that is a definite must read for fans and new readers alike.
This was Shani Struthers at her absolute best! A dark, multi layered tale recounting the sad stories of three interlinked women, all victims of cruel misfortune. The story flowed back and forth over a period of 150 years or so. Was this a tale of reincarnation or a time loop, constantly playing out the same scenario through the lives of different individuals? I don't know. However, this unsettling story will remain with me for a long time to come. Very highly recommended.
Oh WOW another fantastic book from Shani Struthers, had me gripped right from the first page. The story of 3 girls who were all drawn to Highgate cemetary and I really felt I was there with them, cant wait to read another of Shani's books.
The three women in this story are all connected to Highgate Cemetery. Their ghosts probably haunting it still. Three very different women, on the surface at least. But underneath it all, I felt something that they all shared. Something disquieting.
Quite poetic really, that there should be a triple timeline for the last heartbreakingly real, last book in the trilogy.
This story is deliciously dark, spanning nearly two hundred years and centres around Highgate Cemetery. A fascinating Gothic burial place.
The closing scenes broke my heart, but in a good way and was the perfect ending. As was the poem by Christina Rossetti, someone who worked so hard for all those unfortunate souls who had passed away, leaving no record of their passing. I have visited Highgate Cemetery and clearly felt the presence of the dead when I walked its lonely pathways, and as I read each haunting chapter of this stunning story, I remembered the chill of the place, even on a sunny day…
Once again Shani Struthers has written a book I read in two sittings! Absolutely enthralling ghost story with elements of different times woven into it. If you like paranormal stories buy this, you won’t be disappointed!
Wonders never cease to amaze me with the stories that Shani comes up with. As always she fails to disappoint. The book covers some controversial topics regarding forced prostitution and domestic violence so maybe hard for those that maybe in this situation right now The characters as always are well thought out with pieces of history mixed in there which I love. I look forward to see what comes next.
Shani has a very special talent with writing and really pulls you into the pages. Every book is so relatable and also unputdownable so suggest you get comfy for a couple of hours and totally mesmerise yourself with another true indulgence from Shani.
Loved Highgate as much as the crossroads cottage and blakemort.. Just read it you haven't and enjoy every single word.. Just love these books
Another great read from the fabulous Shani Struthers..A page turner from start to finish...I love how it goes back and forth with each era..keeps you on your toes craving more..
Another brilliant tale by Shani Struthers, I’m absolutely addicted to her books. I’m without WiFi at the moment & quickly typing on 4G before it drops out, so full review to follow, but a definite well earned massive 5*’s from me for Highgate. I’ve just bought ‘Mandy’, Shani’s latest and will be diving into that tonight!
Not really my cup of tea. Enjoyed Grace's story set in the 1850's and was easily drawn into her world by this writer but didn't connect as well with the more recent characters or find them particularly plausible and thought the ghost scenes in the cemetery were overworked towards the end of the story. In fact found myself skimming the last third of this book in the hope something would eventually gel me, Unfortunately it didn't. In fairness to the author, perhaps my personal taste would have been better served with a more historical, social bias, rather than the supernatural theme.
Apparently this is the 3rd book in a series set in the cemetery, but this book works as a stand-alone novel. It's the first I've read by this author. Overall, I really liked this novel and the 3 main characters. The author does have the gift of story-telling and the action moves along quickly, with believable emotions and responses. My only criticisms are: 1) the very first chapter (or prologue) was confusing and unnecessary. The author should cut that out entirely, in my opinion. But the next chapter got me invested & curious. 2) the author sometimes writes run-on sentences, and too often uses an opening clause incorrectly so that it refers mistakenly to a person when the author doesn't intend that. But otherwise, the writing is clear and consistent, and I did like the stories. Trigger warning: there are a few brief rape scenes, and one is pretty brutal. This was a bit jarring, as most of the book felt rather light-hearted by comparison, despite some moody characters. But those scenes do serve the plot and explain how harsh Victorian England could be for the impoverished. This book has 3 interwoven stories, each from a different time period. I'm an American reader with an interest in cemeteries and this book gave me an overview of Highgate which I gather is a famous old cemetery in London. I enjoyed this book, overall, despite the fact it could have used a little more grammatical editing. I may read more by this author in the future.
I have to say I am pleased to be at the end of this trilogy but that's down to my wierd OCD that I have to read all books in a series regardless if it's a continuation of a story or not - I have to have the set!! The books can be read as stand alones and are each good stories though with the first one I found the writing a bit poor but it improved with each one. This particular one is set mainly around Highgate Cemetery in London, the story itself is imaginative, set over 3 periods of time that come together in the end (I won't say how in case anyone fancies giving them a go) but again I found certain aspects of the story telling lacking, she had seemingly forgotten about one of the characters and gave a brief explanation of what had happened to him in the last chapter that was totally out of place and once again I failed to connect with any of the characters.
Another brilliant read I love shanni Struthers books what a great writer I’ve enjoyed everyone this highgate was so good I couldn’t put it down. Especially when it came to Lucy story her and Zak it was very sad yet you were happy for her highly recommend to read, you don’t realise what times were like in the 1800 it opens your eyes poor grace and her family starving like many others then. The story of Emma in the 70s her brother took priority because of his illness then death she went to uni but was never really accepted hadn’t made friends. This book must have taken loads of research what an author what more can I say
Lucy lives in the present day and works in the office at Highgate Cemetery. When she meets Zak she feels she has found her soul mate. Emma lived in the 1970's. A university student she lives in a shared house with other students including Kev. Grace is 12 and lived in the 1850's. She meets Higgins, .a man who can help her supply the good her family so badly needs. Three women, connected by one thing: Highgate. Highgate is another amazing book by Shani Struthers. It isn't an easy read as it contains child prostitution and domestic abuse. But for all that it is a compelling read and Shani's creepiest book to date. Recommended.
This was a beautiful story and an excellent read (so far), this series just gets better and better. I found it both interesting and sad given that some elements although fictional have elements of fact laced into the story. I'm not a over emotional person, but I found this story moving and very sad. Shani Struthers is a very intelligent author and to bring 3 separate timelines together and have the reader fully invested in the characters from all 3 timelines takes a really gifted talent. I have every intention now of purchasing ALL the digital books in this series, because I just don't believe that this author could fail so badly that any of the books can be less than brilliant.
I chose this rating because I could barely put the book down! I loved that the setting is an actual place. The writer dealt with girls and women who are abused but in different time periods and in different ways. She also looked at the character of men who do this. It is wonderful that women will bond over such issues. The fact that friends will overlook bad behavior from men is just appalling. I would recommend this book to older girls and women who enjoy paranormal writing.
I read the whole of. The Psychic Surveys books before this one and at first wasn’t sure i was going to like it as it goes to different time periods each chapter. However, really pleased i stuck with it, although graphic and hard hitting in places it brings to the forefront some of the horrific ways people , especially women and children have suffered at the hands of abusers. I found myself wanting to learn about periods of history, both fascinated and appreciative of those that fought to bring about this change.
This was the third stand alone novel in a series called This Haunted World. We are introduced to three lonely, unloved girls Grace in 1850ish, Emma in the 1970s and Lucy in the Present day. All three are linked to the eerie Highgate Cemetary and feel love and hate for the place in equal measure. This is an uncomfortable read at times as it deals with coercive relationships and the destructive damage they can cause, carried out by the enigmatic men in all three girls lives. However, I enjoyed it as it was full of spooky ghostly moments in true Shani style and was also uplifting at times.
Shani Struthers hits another one way way way out of the park. This is a wonderfully creepy ghost story that has 3 separate and very distinct timelines. One in the late 1800's to early 1900's, another in the 1970's and another set in present day. The ability of the author to totally immerse me , as a reader, into each time period was amazing. I loved the history repeating itself trope in this one and the characters were so well developed. Excellent novel!
I don't normally read this type of book but decided to give it a go while on lockdown. I am history buff so this appealed to me, I loved the references to the famous people who are buried there. It was a good story littered with historical facts. I read it in a day and will probably read more of Shanis boojs
