The witch who doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
Amber is under orders to spend a relaxing Christmas with her House and family in Denver. No chance.
A fleeing Athanate House with rebel Adepts and a dying human kin throw themselves at Amber's mercy and her decisions unleash a terrifying journey into the world of the most secretive of paranormal races - the Adepts.
Amber has to unmask her enemies, persuade uncertain allies to support her, and risk her own soul in a battle to protect the power of the dragon and the outcome of Emergence.
I was born in Africa and left out in the sun too often.
After being persuaded that I wasn't going to be able to be a cowboy if I grew up, I got interested in philosophy and psychology. Tending bars proved to me they weren't as much fun as they sounded. While trying to enroll in a class to read Science Fiction full time, I ended up taking an electronic engineering degree which splendidly qualified me to move into marketing. That in turn spawned a late onset career in creative writing.
When not writing, I fly a microlight aircraft, or get muddy on a mountain bike.
I love reading obviously. Urban Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Thrillers, History, Crime, Art, oh nearly everything.
Tullah is in hiding, separated from her dragon spirit guide Kaothos. She is being hunted by different factions of the community of adepts, their motives are shrouded. Amber is also separated from her spirit guides, Hana the wolf and Tara her sister.
And time is running out.
Amber needs to find Tullah and bring all the spirit guides home but to do so she will need to embrace her own adept abilities, abilities that are reviled by all the adept communities as dark and forbidden.
Inside Straight is very different to the other books in the Bite Back series. It's the book that unites all three parts of Amber Farrell, the Athanate (vampire), the Were and the Adept (witch). It also has the feel of a requiem, like it's the end of one phase in the story and the beginning of the next phase.
This entire series is brilliant. It's redefining the genre. It takes the best that has come before and reinvents it. I don't read male authors. Look at my books and you will see that 90% plus were written by women. Mark Henwick is probably the only male author I will buy without a second thought. He's a favorite author and an author whose books I will read and reread again and again.
Is this a 5 Star book? I don't really know. When you love a series as much as I love this series it's not easy to be objective but it's a 5 Star book for me.
Added for Audiobook Edition
The Bite Back series has had 3 narrators. Book 1, Sleight of Hand was narrated by Kimberly Henrie. I'm sure she is the perfect voice for other books but I don't think she was right for this series. After Kimberly Henrie, Julia Motyka took over the duties and she made the series her own. Unfortunately for reasons unknown to me, she is no longer doing narration work so Mark Henwick needed to find a new narrator. He finally settled on Emily Rankin who is honestly as good as Julia Motyka but a little different. Listening to this one did feel a little strange at times but I have no doubt she will make the series her own.
3.5ish - This one felt repetitive and frustrating to me. "Inside Straight" needed more action and/or forward momentum. It has been a couple of years since I read book 5.
it might have been a long wait for this book, one of my favourite series, but it was worth every second. Every word that goes down onto the page of a Mark Henwick book is a quality one. Full of sweeping action and tiny nuances, this book carrie the weight of a sledge hammer in all it's consequences for the supernatural world but the true delight as ever is the politics and character details, the growth, the world building and the constant desire to know more.
Amber is (as ever) in a complicated situation with her fingers in many pies. Being a unique hybrid, she has links to the 3 main supernatural groups. We haven't seen much of the Adept for a while and this book features them heavily, with some new players thrown in for good measure. Amber learns a lot about herself and the ways of the Adepts. Her Athanate nature covets interesting and valuable members for her team/family and collects a few more, characters familiar from the novellas of the series. I got enough questions answered for me to be very satisfied and am still anxiously waiting for more. I can't recommend this series enough.
Another masterpiece of a book, incredibly well written, characters so complete you can feel them, story well woven from one cover to the other, one book at a time yet all together. Simply incredible!
No! It can't be the last one! I hope you're writing quickly, Mr. Henwick! No, take your time and do it right, so it's as good as the others! At least I have Bian's book still to read.
It wasn’t as good as 1,3 or 4. But it wasn’t bad either. I didn’t even know this book was in the process of being written. I only knew it existed because it showed up in my email notifications. It’ll probably another year or two before #7 is released. So there are some things in this book that do get clarified. Spirit guides not on the approved list are very wide and varied. Tammany got adopted..... kinda. Well it’s just better than being stuck with her mother. Yelena is answering Ambers phone for her. If you think her response to Felix trying to get in touch with Amber was bad, just wait till you read about about she said to mama Farrell. Speaking of mama Farrell, she’s trying to be okay with her daughters unconventional relationship. Kath has come out of the closet....... for alcoholism. First born Farrell children dying.... that’s brought up a lot. Diana is finally back, for a chunk of the book. Ambers House and Pack are growing. Felix tried to play politician when he should have been going on gut/Call instinct anyway. And Alex almost was fried because of it. Cameron is an interesting alpha to say the least. She gives even less leeway than Felix. Naryn’s back. And still hates Amber. No surprise there. Zane still wants to get into Ambers pants. “You have to convince my husband.” Yeah, that’s just want every hot dog wants to hear. Well you’ll have to convince my angry, territorial husband to let you have sex with me. I can’t wait to see how that plays out. Lots of Adepts and magic in this book. It’s almost more confusing than trying to follow a delicate political debate, in Anthanate. Ambers finally got Adepts in her House now. Pretty sure even she couldn’t have dreamed up on how’d they get there. OH!!! And she finally infused her first ever Aspriant. I think it’s safe to say her House will never be low key. And knowing the scent of the Marque will never be necessary world wide. It’s immediately obvious who belongs to House Farrell. OPS 4-10 are just as military as they’ll always be. Figure that tidbit out.
Ok. Wow.
Decent addition as our leading lady explores her witchy powers, tries to reconcile a dragon spirit, form a new pack, and keep up with Athinate politics. While switching narrators wasn't the author's fault it definitely brought the rating down a star.
I have enjoyed every one of Henwick’s books. Well written. Great fantasy! Wonderful character development, plot twists that aren’t outrageous but instead very believable. Love the whole series!
I'm still reading this series. But it's almost always a bad idea to transform a Scrappy Underdog Hero story into a Supreme Power Over All story over a series.
Amber doesn't know who to trust? Weaver the strong adept leader of the Denver community or the Hecate Gwen. Both want Kaothos but for different reasons. And the Empire of Heaven is still looking for Tallulah. Alex gets challenged by the El Paso pack. Everyone decides to not tell Amber till the last minute. Big mistake! She insists she should fight too because its a mated pair of alphas. They would kill Alex. Did I mention there is a make out session between Amber & Zane? I love Alex but Zane has the whole bad boy vibe going for him. This book is more about the accepts & their powers finally. Amber grows her house & infuses a few humans.
I loved the book but I'm confused about Amber and Zane. You would think that she has enough lovers, especially where it evolves Alex and her wolf, they are married and mates, supposedly. Just because shes a hybrid she gets to sleep with anyone she wants to? That doesn't make sense and I don't believe that Alex should have to accept Zane because she can't control herself; when is enough enough? No one else acts like that, especially the mates wolf pairs in the series.
I do not often write a review (just stars from me) and I’m not very good at them, but this series really needed me to say something. I read a LOT and am constantly searching for new series to dive into, this series did not disappoint. I enjoyed it so much, that I’ve had to create a new shelf alongside my favourites, for Top Ten Series and I have bought the full series of books, which I rarely do since I have Kindle Unlimited. Eagerly awaiting Book 7!
It’s always so hard to write a review without spoilers but this book left me desperate for the next! Amber is such a fantastic MC, she isn’t overpowered or TSTL, she’s evolved from her solitary start to depending on her House and allies. The spirit guide twists nearly gave me whiplash but so well designed. Absolutely recommend this series.
I really enjoyed this series. I read it straight through from book one to this one. Had to stop for work;). The action, drama and adventures were well work and I loved them. The characters were interesting and it kept you entranced to finish the series. I hope we will see more of them.. If not, it was good as it was written. Thank you
Well great like in the book and in life questions are answered but twice as many come up. Now I'm stuck like with the other series i listen to, waiting for the next book. I hate waiting. Like I said before addictive and need a fix need answers. Oh how this is going to suck. Incase you can't tell I'm a very patient person. 🤣😂
You will always want more!!!! I never want her story to end. I love Amber Farrell!!!! I love the new concept on vampires and I love all of her house and characters. It was insanely gripping I barely put it down. I'm sure my kids and husband are happy that I'm not so consumed anymore lol. You are my new favorite Author. Please don't stop writing!
Book 6 focuses more on Adept (witch) powers than the previous volumes in the series. Amber brings two renegade shaman adepts into her House, and the primary conflict/task of this episode is to find Tullah who has gone into hiding from all the bad guys who want the power represented by her dragon spirit guide. Were, Athanate, and Adept will have to find a way to work together to accomplish this nearly impossible task. I especially enjoyed the depiction of Spirit Walks.
I read hundreds of books every year. Each time a Bite Back book is released, it goes to the top of my “to read” pile. Try the free sample from any of the books; I promise you’ll be hooked!
Mark Henwick just took me on an emotional rollercoaster with this series. Will there be more? Amber Farrell is a totally badass heroine and constantly proves her moral compass with just a few wavers here and there. Didn't see as much of Alex and Jen in this book but still got the strength of their commitment. Wondering how Zane will fit in. What a great series!
The Amber Farrell series just keeps getting better and better. Right when it ends. I’m sure there is more to come, so now I’ll dive into Bian’s story. Bian went from one of my least favorite characters to my second best by the end of the first five books.
Great entry - more complex, more fun, more challenges - nice set up for more - and a surprisingly sweet end for what seemed like a likely core for a whole new entry - keen to see what is next
This series is seriously astounding. It's raw, gritty, and intelligent. The characters are alive, vital, and complex. If you're looking for a really good series to get lost in, this is it.
