Almost impresive in how unexciting it succeeds in being, but no the true problem with this book was its reader. Truely there are no bad books, only legions of bad readers. And if I was the kind of person who could be shocked or excited by the High Priest of Judaism saying the name of God aloud in the Holy of Holies or indeed the kind of person to be invested in a plot concerning a plan to rebuild the Temple of Solomon rather than utterly indifferent ( and Chabon's novel the yiddish policemens unionleft me cold too great title, shame about the plot ) then I might have been at least moved or emotionally engaged in this novel.

As it happens I am just a bit puzzled. The whole thing is a shaggy dog story culminating in the above items in spoiler text and a far as I can work out what happened in the novel was pretty pointless or to put it another way the narrative does not logically culminate in the conclusion of the story. The two are disconnected linked, possibly coincidently, by several characters. This is interesting in its own way.

The story opens cheerfully with the murder of an archaeologist. As far as I can work out there was no reason to kill him or killing him did not prevent the chain of events which his murderer might have wished to prevent. I guess since he was killed by someone who was part of the Order of the Assassins that nomen ist omen, you know if you're an assassin you've gotta assassinate people because that's like your vocation or something.

Reading the back cover I was initially disappointed because the book seemed to be about the treasure of the Jewish Temple and not the Templars who have to be at the core of all stupid adventure stories the templars are connected to everything as we learn in Foucaut's Pendulum . But no! The Templars feature strongly, this time as good guys ( who also travel by bus on occasion the contemporary Templar is of course ecologically friendly ) which is an unusual twist (both being God guys and travelling by bus I suppose). They support the Essenes, and are sworn enemies of the order of the assassins who are in addition to assassinating archaeologists are generally up to no good.

One of the high points of the story was the hero and his secret CIA sidekick following a man on a bus as he travelled to the secret, yet accessible to the general public, Templar lair in central Paris. There was a lot of apparently irrelevant travel and generally the whole thing stank of a novelization of a made for TV film that was intended to be screened at the obscurest hours of the day to the least critical and most gullible audiences only.

Apart from that it was not completely awful. If it has more narrative drive it could have carried me over the rapids, as it was I just bumped up against the rocks feeling bemused.

But I do have a story about this book. I got it in a library where before Christmas there was a table groaning with book shaped gift wrapped presents, and in exchange for a cash donation you could seize and run off with one of them. And that was how I acquire this book. I thought it would be good for travelling and so it came to pass.

Η Ελιέτ Αμπεκασίς προσφέρει ένα συναρπαστικό ιστορικό θρίλερ που συνδυάζει την αρχαιολογία, τη θρησκευτική ιστορία και τη σύγχρονη δράση. Η αφήγηση με οδήγησε σε ένα ταξίδι γεμάτο μυστήριο, όπου η έρευνα του Αρύ και της Τζέιν με κράτησε σε αγωνία μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα. Η συγγραφέας χρησιμοποιεί μια ενδιαφέρουσα τεχνική: παρεμβάλλει ιστορικά στοιχεία και εξηγήσεις για τα χειρόγραφα και τους Ναΐτες, τα οποία προσέθεταν βάθος στην ατμόσφαιρα της ιστορίας. Παρόλο που το βιβλίο είχε ένταση, ένιωσα ότι ο ρυθμός ήταν κάπως αργός στην αρχή, καθώς γίνεται μια εκτενής ανασκόπηση των γεγονότων του πρώτου βιβλίου.
Η σύνδεση του θησαυρού του Ναού του Σολομώντα με τους Ναΐτες και τα κείμενα του Κουμράν είναι συναρπαστική και καλά ερευνημένη. Η δημιουργία της ατμόσφαιρας μυστηρίου και ίντριγκας είναι πολύ επιτυχημένη, ειδικά στις τοποθεσίες της Ιερουσαλήμ. Η πλοκή είναι γεμάτη ανατροπές και κρατάει το ενδιαφέρον αμείωτο.
Το πρώτο μέρος του βιβλίου είναι κάπως αργό, καθώς χρειάζεται να υπενθυμίσει τα γεγονότα του πρώτου τόμου. Ορισμένες από τις φιλοσοφικές και θρησκευτικές αναλύσεις είναι πυκνές και απαιτούν προσοχή.
Συνολικά, η βαθμολογία μου είναι 4 στα 5 αστέρια. Ήταν ένα εξαιρετικό, διασκεδαστικό θρίλερ που άξιζε το χρόνο μου και ανυπομονώ να διαβάσω το τρίτο βιβλίο της σειράς.
Συνολική Εμπειρία:
Ένα καθηλωτικό, έξυπνο ιστορικό θρίλερ με βάθος και μυστήριο.

Li a versão portuguesa. Não vale nada. Não aconselho nada. Pensei que por misturar Israel e história judaica tivesse substância, mas não. Uma narrativa atabalhoada, parece que quer pôr tudo na mesma frase e não capta nada o interesse (a não ser por saber quem matou o Professor, mas de resto nada)
