Criminologist David Dunnigan and his troubled niece Beth are on the run.
Beth has been accused of killing a high-profile detective and everyone thinks she's guilty. Even Beth, who has no memory of what happened, wonders if she is capable of murder.
As Dunnigan and Beth set out to prove her innocence, they are hunted by the same forces responsible for Beth's abduction nearly twenty years ago.
In a chase that takes them from Hamburg to Prague, to a compound in the bleak expanse of the Nevada desert, Dunnigan eventually comes face-to-face with their enemies.
But did Beth really kill the man she had come to think of as a friend, and what secret will Dunnigan discover that could end Frobisher's After Dark Campaign once and for all?
The time has come for Dunnigan to make a will he be brave enough to make it, knowing that everyone he loves can't possibly make it out of this alive?
I picked up this book at my local bookswop library which was set up due to Covid and us all being in lockdown. I have not read any of the 3 previous novels so was the first time to these characters. I got a little confused at times due to the writing style but the author did a good job of recapping a few storylines and history of the main characters. It was easy to read and once I got 40 pages in I started to enjoy it but initially I wondered if I would regret picking up this book. I am not sure about the ending though (spoiler alert) - the fact one of the baddies is still alive and presumably could come back to terrorise Beth and David again. I have no problem with authors using the same characters in all their books but generally a trilogy is the most to do with a recurring theme and this book is number 4 so I feel the credibility of a book dealing with Frobisher and his henchmen into a 5th book would be too much. The author stated he had a softspot for the psycho doctor and so didn't kill him in the book but to me it smacks of an author having no other idea for a book that they want to flog the same thing to death. I may go back and read books 1-3 but no way would I read a book 5 in the series as feel it would be overkill both figuratively and literally
Loved this book!! Mickey and Davey are so addictive, I just want more now to see what happens with them next!! Like all books in this series I haven’t been able to put it down and read it in a couple of days. Come on Shane, start the next book already :) I need to know the next bit haha.
I'm having a hard time deciding if I liked this book or not. I'd give it 3,5* though I would have loved to enjoy it more. I really loved the first one (After She Vanished) and have read it something like seven times. The character development there was on point and it actually felt like progression. I also really enjoyed the third book about Mother Joan which is why the final novel felt more than a little disappointing.
Overall, I'm sad the series is over because I just wish it had a more satisfactory final book. I will most certainly reread the first and the third ones more than once in the future, but likely not this one.
Let me first say that I thoroughly enjoyed the concluding book in this series.
I did not appreciate Gina and Frank being killed off, but at the same time I’m actually glad that some of the good guys died. I think it was needed.
The only reason I didn’t give this 5* was because even after all of that, you still didn’t manage to kill off Ressler. COME ON DUNPHY!! WHY?! All I wanted was for him to finally be gone. Honestly he bored me and I felt it was his time for be killed so I’m really disappointed that he magically survived a fucking explosion (:
But, overall. A very good series, that I would most definitely recommend!!

At first I didn't know After She Vanished was part of the David Dunnigan series until I read the reviews for When She Was Gone! I am so glad I did! The main characters are amazing! I finally finished reading the series when the given If She Returned and Why She Ran on my birthday! Totally worth the wait! An absolutely amazing ending! Miley has to be my favourite character!
Well what can I say? I was confused by the first 30 pages or so. I have never read anything by this author before so maybe this is their style of writing. I'm glad I stuck with it though because I have not been able to put this book down. With the exception of work and sleep, it has been in my hand for the last two days (I'm a slow reader!) Really enjoyed it.
Superb. I can’t recommend this series enough. Amazing characters who come to life on the page, a story that pulls you in and doesn’t let go, and brilliant writing. The fact that I finished all 446 pages in just over a day says it all. A page turner and story that will stay with me,
Well sorry to say that's all four books in series finished or is it. Fantastic reads lots of turns and twists and exciting reads. Just can't wait to see what happens next if they do bring out another one although author says they are finished. Highly recommend.
Loved the characters. Knew who was gonna die, but was still upset by it. Loved the adversity they overcome. Can't wait for the follow up whenever that may.
I am a serial DNF’er, I can’t remember the last time I even read a third in a series, let alone a fourth. The storyline and writing in this series is fantastic and I HAD to get to the end, really enjoyed the entire thing.
This one was my first book, didn’t read in order, but honestly, it wasn’t for me. The blurb made it sound like it was going to be all action packed and thrilling, but I just couldn’t vibe with it. Felt like it was trying too hard to be edgy, you know?
Dunnigan and Beth’s whole on the run thing, meh. I couldn’t connect with either of them, and I didn’t care what happened next. Beth has amnesia, Dunnigan’s playing detective, and somehow we’re globe trotting from Hamburg to Prague to Nevada? It all just felt a bit... messy.
The writing itself was super clunky, and the pacing was all over the place. Some parts dragged, others felt rushed, and I was mostly just waiting for it to get good. Spoiler: it didn’t.
If you’re into overly complicated plots and cardboard characters, maybe give it a go. Personally, I won’t be picking up another one from this series. 🫠
