Alexandra Elizabeth Mackenzie. Stop ignoring us. Speak the words. Make this right so we can be… Bright.

Lexie’s birthday has caught up with her, as have her cousins, Mirabelle Louisa Mackenzie - High Chair of the British Isles and all Circumferential Domains Pertaining to the Mackenzie Coven - and Catherine Marianna Mackenzie, her down under cousin (If she has a title, she’s not telling her). They’ve been sent to remind Lexie of her family obligations and also to give her a birthday gift. The type she can’t return, refuse or exchange. It’s her heritage and it comes with a job she didn’t even apply for. It’s actually more a way of life than a career and it comes with a snazzy new outfit only her cousins can see. Thank goodness for that…

Not surprisingly, Mirabelle and Catherine Mackenzie are short on details and time to explain. In fact, Lexie has less than two days to brush up on her skills and fly to England… at the blink of an eye. The Mackenzie Coven has been enlisted to assist with a rising concern at House St James. It comes in the shape of an inky black fog Lexie calls the menace. It might not be in corporeal form, but it’s somehow managed to murder one St James family member. Now it’s Lexie’s job to make sure it doesn’t strike again, but she’s fallen under a spell. Suddenly she’s tearing off her beloved denim jeans and Rock Hard t-shirt and donning bespoke designer dresses and sipping ‘delish’ champagne. Even her accent has changed and her cousins can’t do anything about it because a covenant prohibits all three Mackenzie Coven witches from gathering in the house together. They must somehow circumvent the seal and guide Lexie through her first official task as a Mackenzie Coven witch and find the murderer before all the heirs meet their end…

A fun, entertaining read, and I'd have given it three stars had it not been for its sloppy presentation and lack of effective proofreading, of which the most egregious example was rendering 'carpe diem' as 'cease the day'.

I really enjoyed Witch Inheritance. The book is engaging and held your attention right from the beginning. It is mysterious and intriguing. It is a quick read but mostly because I could not put the book down. I really like the characters. Lexie is interesting and fun. This book is a wonderful start to the series and makes me excited to read more. I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

Hee hee - I'm not really a reader of this genre of book, but I found it to be a highly interesting and amusing book. I loved Lexi's backsliding and the subsequent trick to get her to conform. I loved the interactions between the three sisters, and to top it off a great surprise ending. Do yourself a favour and follow this series - it's well worth the read :)

Absurdly good story

A reluctant which in denial about her powers is forced into embracing them all, cue magic mystery mayhem, and murder in this engaging story. A fun read with great characters lots of action and an unusual storyline well worth a read, Baz.

Wonderful

A great start to a wonderful series. I'm reading this book for the second or third time and still enjoy it immensely. I love the main characters and how they interact with each other.

That was.....that was a decent outline of the dialogue for a future book. Unfortunately, I don't feel like it was then fleshed out into an actual novel (or even a novella). It is literally like 80% dialogue, with no world or character building. The reader is dropped into the middle, characters appear and aren't introduced or explained, the plot make no sense and the narration is cheesy. I mean, the villainous evil is called the "inky black fog." And while I sense this was meant to be humorous, it wasn't. Then the climax arrived abruptly and the book ended on a cliffhanger. I will not be continuing the series.

Really quite funny

This book surprised me! It’s a wonderful introduction to the Mackenzie coven, it’s also full of fun and mayhem and very reluctant would be hero’s. I liked the rules, the subterfuge the fantasy, it’s all very imaginative and well written. A book to be enjoyed for sure.

Meet the Mackenzies

Alexandra Elizabeth Mackenzie.. Lexie's 25th birthday is here and there is something she's forgotten.. a big something that is nudging at the back of her mind and pushing it's way determinedly to the front..

As soon as she starts to remember she's equally determined to stop the inevitable from happening and heads into O'Connor's pub but the feelings won't be stilled and what's more two orbs are now talking to her.. Mirabelle and Catherine Mackenzie her cousins, Chair's of the Mackenzie Coven for Great Britain and Australia respectively, need the Incoming Chair for America to get back on board and resume the place she deferred ten years ago.. but Lexie doesn't want to speak the words that will return her powers she just wants an ordinary life..

Mirabelle and Catherine however need her help, they have been called in by Henry St James, the head of the family to assist with the House of St James and fixing the protective spell their ancestors cast over both the house and family.. with Mirabelle too well known to the family and Catherine unable to travel it leaves Lexie, an untrained wildcard witch, as their only option but can Lexie overcome the compelling nature of the house and stop having fun long enough to solve the problem?

I got the first book from BookBub and the other four from the Kindle library. This magical, witchy series is amusing and interesting. Full of witty chit chat and snarky comebacks, mostly between the heroine, Lexie and her feline companion, Luna or Lexie and one of her cousins...or Lexie and anyone. That's just how Lexie rolls. She's just had her 25th birthday and though she's tried to avoid it, she now has to assume her share of the family power, magic. And the family fully expects her to hit the ground running. Little or no time to learn how to use said power, she's sent off to handle this task or attend that meeting without any preparation. It's called throwing them in at the deep end. Lexie and Luna handle it, not the way everyone expects them to, but the job gets done. Lexie gathers allies along the way. Octavia, her administrative assistant. Jonathan, her guardian. The O'Rourkes, all 100 of them, for back up. When last I saw Lexie, she had just made a friend, mostly because she'd returned her magic to her. Lexie and Luna had returned home to find it was all burned and Octavia and Jonathan were trying to clean it up and restore it. Recommended.

It wasn't a task for the Mackenzie Witches to pull Lexie back into the coven. Her cousins Mirabelle and Catherine are really throwing her into the deep end with her first task. This family is obligated to handle some pretty heavy stuff and Lexie is about to get her first taste of that, while trying to keep some normalcy in her life.

She is soon to find out that certain things, places and people were places in her life with a purpose. Even though the 10 year hiatus was approved by the Council and Morg, there was still plenty of magigal meddling done in those years. For her 1st task, she will travel to London, England and wine and dine with the hoity toity St. James family. At first things seem on the up and up, then Lexie starts experiencing character traits that are not of her own doing.

The game is on and the challenge is accepted and Lexie works her way through her first magical case as a Mackenzie Witch and her cousins and the Counsil have reason to hold their heads high for this incoming Witch in training.

Lexie doesn't want to be a witch. She's talked her family into giving her ten years of normal life, but now her time is up. Her cousins drag her into the fold, tell her she is destined to be the next High Chair, and send her off to England. With no training and no understanding of her powers (if any!), she is destined to bumble around and get into trouble. House St. James has a spell on it that forbids three of the Mackenzie coven from being there together, so Lexie is on her own with her cousins trying to help from the outside. The head of the house has been murdered, there is a black fog that casts a spell on everyone, and Lexie must find the murderer before the next heir is also killed. But a spell also affects her - she is more inclined to dress in couture clothes and drink champagne than to get down to business. I enjoyed it enough to want to read more of the series.

Witch Inheritance (A Mackenzie Coven Mystery Book 1) — Sonia Parin (12 chapters + Epilogue) Dec. 4, 2020

The story starts by dropping the reader into a situation that isn’t really explained up front, but gets discussed as the chapters unfold. This book is the first in the series.

Lexi is a witch that went in hiding and now her time has come to rejoin the coven. First up is trip from the US to UK to help a happy house that is in danger of becoming very evil.

The story felt a little disjointed, but it was enjoyable as it progressed.

Readers who like female witchy readings with a potential for male (heterosexual) couplings may like this. I wasn’t disappointed to kill time reading this super short book, but I will pass on reading the rest of the series.

Three stars.

Witch Inheritance was my first book by Sonia Parin. Poor Lexie has been trying to stay away from the “family business” but when she is suddenly left with no choice, this book takes you on a journey through a cozy little mystery. This book has mystery, secrets, and some great humor. It’s a very light read that you can easily enjoy on a Sunday afternoon. The authors writing style is one I enjoyed and I look forward to seeing what else the series has to offer. I would’ve preferred a little more backstory on each of the characters since this is the first in the series but I’m hoping as we get into the next book will see that. If you enjoy humor and cozy mysteries you will love this.

This was a little campy, a little fun, a little silly, and pretty good for a lazy airplane flight. This is a story about a girl who wanted nothing to do with her witch inheritance until she got tricked into accepting it. Then she apparently is the only one able to go do this job, where something sinister is happening at a family estate. With the help of her cousins, helping remotely as witchy projections, they try to keep things from getting out of hand, not always successfully. Like I said, cute campy and fun, but not too deep of a story.

A reluctant witch is still a witch.

Lexie is tricked into joining the Mackenzie coven. Ten years she avoided it before now. Sent to England to help the St James family, she finds herself feeling relaxed and happy. What is the only black substance that transforms the feeling in the house?
Lexie must discover what it is and how it works, in order to save the family. A number of twists and turns reveal an unexpected suspect.
A must read for all lovers of the supernatural world.

For me this story took a bit for me to get into and get lost. I was hoping for more of a cozy mystery. That said this is a good story about Lexie (Alexandra Elizabeth Mackenzie, a young woman who is going to find he life changed with a visit from Mirabelle and Catherine..Lexie is going to find a bit of magic a bit of mystery and an assignment that is strictly coven business. The author did a good job with a clean novel and a quick read.

Lots of magic & mayhem

When Lexus Mackenzie is corralled by her cousins, Catherine & Mirabelle into accepting her witch powers and entering the family coven, she isn't sure what to expect. And when she is sent to House St. James to navigate a curse and handle an inky black fog, she feels completely out of her league. When she feels herself getting sucked into the house, Lexus is forced to find her craft, herself, and her family.

But I don't want to

Just because you are capable of doing something doesn't mean that you know how to do it. Example. As a child you were capable of walking, but it took lots of practice to get it correct. Same with unexplained witching powers.
I did like that laughing at the terrifying monster made it go away. So many rules to discover and so little time to practise. Oh yeah, and it's all your fault because you just wanted to be normal.

Interesting

A witch who doesn't want to be a witch. She gets her family to agree to a ten year brake from being a witch, on her 25th birthday she has to go back and take a position with her coven. She has tried everything she can think of to get out of it but, they have come for her and are not taking no for an answer. Now she must start her training for the new job. Of course she gets thrown in feet first, I hope she is good at thinking on her feet.

A witch coming back to her coven

Lexie has been away from the MacKenzie coven since she chose to leave and live a ‘regular’ life. But now she must return and take her place as the witch she is meant to be. There is a trial of sorts she finds herself involved in. But she must learn on the go to make things right.
The story is interesting and the trials of accepting witch powers is fun. A trial and many errors make fore a fun story.

Great beginning for a series!

Alexandra was able to bargain to keep her life normal, until she is seventeen. Then she must become a member of the Mackenzie coven. Her first assignment is to deal with whatever is causing problems with a family protected by the coven.
Well written, great plot and characters. Plenty of action with a few twists. Lived it!

Just lovely!

Take one witch in training and send her to a mansion where only wonderful happy things happen..... but wait. There is a dark malevolent " being" that is controlling everyone and it is up to Lexie to dispose of it and bring peace and happiness back to the family. Quite a lot for a fledgling witch to handle even with invisible help.

I was pleased

I love books that start right into the action. I'm not fond of books that give all the bio and history first. I get confused on the names later on because a "new" character pops up that I haven't seen since page 3 of the book. The characters in this book are cute and I want to see them again

Interesting read. A witch new to the Mackenzie Coven because she delayed accepting her duties as a member of the Coven for 10 years and now the time has come for her to accept her responsibilities. She has a lot to learn and a short amount of time to accomplish it. Looking forward to what happens next.

I have enjoyed other works of this author, but I reserve judgement on this series, so far. Not saying it isn't good, but it's not 5 star either. The characters are fun to read about, the plot is fairly easy to follow and the premise is finding out what is making things so wonky in the house the main character was sent to. I do recommend this book.

Boring!

Snore! This book was so boring that after dragging myself through 61% hoping it would improve I finally gave up and tossed it. The editing was terrible. Wrong words in the sentence only led to more confusion than the script itself. Do yourself a favor and give this one a pass.

I had to skim through the second half of this book. I am still not sure if all of the grammatical errors were intentional or if there was no one available to proofread before publication. If the poor grammar was supposed to be funny, then it just wasn't funny to me. There was also too much dialog and not enough actual story. I am curious to see if book 2 is any better as the plot was intriguing.
