What happens when a dare goes too far?

Maddox Coulter. Reckless bad boy. Infamous playboy. My nemesis. And now my best friend.

I know he'll never leave me hanging. He knows I'll never refuse a dare. Everywhere we go we turn heads, but it's not like that.

Until it is.

For one of us, anyway.

I've always known he would be my downfall. But I trusted him to catch me.

He proved me wrong.

Maddox has gone too far, and I don't know if I want to rein him in or push us further into dangerous territory.

He tells me those three little words that I crave. Three little words I want from no one else.

"I dare you."
Except this time, it's no simple dare. This could burn us to the ground.

"I dare you to f*ck him."

ehh despite this having tropes that i don't like now i still really liked this?? i just think Lila and Madox are 🥺

* * *

first read (october 2019)3.75 stars
i totally judged the book cover again.
i mean come on, if there's a half-naked dude in the cover, i always assume the book would have a lot of steam in it or this would be your typical NA book, but nope.

this was slow burn as hell. like realllyyy slow burn. Mariana Zapata type of slow burn... and i loved it!

though,
was i impatient? yes.
was i frustrated? f yes.
did i want to lock Lila and Maddox in a room for a week and throw away the key so they can finally do it? Y E S!

if i didn't know this was a duet i would've been super disappointed and maybe even angry but thank god there's another one coming up.

Lila and Maddox's story starts in their senior year of high school and from then on, they started off as enemies to friends to best friends to something more (and not lovers because i'm pretty sure that's saved for the second book).

soo yeah, this book is about Lila and Maddox's progression and history of their relationship/friendship.

first part: enemies
i loved this part of the book!

the way they taunted each other, their bickering and banter, the way Maddox chased Lila, and their sexual tension was off the charts and i was all for it!

honestly, this was my favorite part because i thought the games they were playing were entertaining and i just had to appreciate the fact the Lila is not the kind of heroine who suddenly becomes "aroused" to the asshole H just because he was hot even though he was "bullying" her. like, yes girl.

and Maddox? damn that charming man, i love him. he may have been the typical popular, QB, rich, man ho, douche but nope. he was way more than that. my feelings towards him is similar to the way i felt when it comes to Vicious in Vicious. i just couldn't help but love this guy.

and the way he always fought BESIDE (not for) Lila and always told her that she didn't need anyone fighting her battles because she can do it herself as she was his "dragon" was just, UGH. my heart.

and that "dark room" scene just about broke my heart.

but, for the safety gang, there are OW scenes during this part. don't worry, it's nothing explicit.
— the first one is where the OW is on his lap, grinding on him but he wasn't even paying attention. he thought about hooking up with her and was about to let the OW give him a bj but they got interrupted.
— the second part is where a lot of people may have a problem though, after the "dark room" scene, he parties and takes home TWO women. no explicit scene but he woke up finding these two women on his bed.

middle part: friends/best friends
they're still in high school here and after spending a lot of time together, Lila and Maddox become friends and the thought of being together or wanting more was suddenly forbidden for them.

this frustrated me to no end.

whenever they would say,

"Friends?"
"Friends."

and then they pinky swear, i would get so mad and my inner Shia Labeouf comes out, screaming at my kindle,

description

but in this part, it focused more on the emotional aspect of their relationship/friendship. all the games they were playing were gone and instead, trust, loyalty, and everything else was built here.

HOWEVER,
the H continued to sleep with other girls, but in a rare occurrence, this did not bother me at this point.

why?
because the h wasn't in pain or jealous or anything! they may have unknowingly fallen in love with each other but disguising it as wanting to be friends, but them being with OP did not bother me??

maybe it's because of the way it was written? yes, definitely.
the author just mentioned that the H was with other girls but it didn't give me feelings that would typically result in anger.

because oh boy would i be angry as hell if this happened in other books, but here? nahh. i was just disappointed. though, i'm pretty sure he wasn't the same man ho before he met Lila.

last part: best friends to something more
this is three years later after they graduated high school and they're both in Harvard.

both MCs have been with OP and both weren't celibate and again, i was okay with that??

by then, i already knew this was gonna be a Mariana Zapata type of slow-burn so i accepted the fact that they were both with OP (even though i loathe this trope).

in this part, they finally start to accept that they want more, so the sexual tension becomes apparent again, though, their constant thoughts of ohh i can't be with him/her because i don't wanna lose our friendship blah blah blah started to reallyyy annoy me. i mean, i've been rooting for these two since the freaking beginning and for once, i wanted the H to think with his D when it comes to the h!

and then this went on and on and my inner Shia Labeouf just multiplied by a THOUSAND,

description

MY GOD.

i've never been frustrated before in my entire life!!

but when they finally did it in the second to last chapter? i was happy to say the least.

by the way, there's a little bit of OW and OM drama here but it ends pretty quickly.
— h has a bf when this part starts but she was just a rebound and this OM was cheating on her this whole time.
— H had a fbuddy and broke things off with her while h was beside him.
— H dares h to sleep with this random dude when they went to Paris as an act to "push" her away (this annoyed me btw) but she didn't end up going through with it.

overall thoughts:
i was slightly disappointed just because i wanted to see more of Lila and Maddox actually be a couple and i wanted them to be together since they were in high school!

there's romance here but also not.

this focused more on the history of Lila and Maddox and honestly, i'm okay with that because this book brought so much emotions in me that i ended up liking it even though it had tropes that i would typically hate.

the banter, the friendship and trust that was built and them slowly but surely falling for one another and being each other's soulmates was so heartwarming to read and i can't wait to read their second book!

I'm really divided about this book. On the one hand, it made me roll my eyes so many times... On the other hand, the ending was fucking AWESOME that left me curious to know what would happen next! 😱💥

📚 "𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒔. 𝑾𝒆 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒔.
𝑰 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒚𝒃𝒆… 𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆. 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒆. 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒖𝒔, 𝒐𝒇 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒃𝒆. 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒔𝒐 𝒈𝒐𝒅𝒅𝒂𝒎𝒏 𝒘𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒈.
𝑴𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒐𝒙 𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒌.
𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒑𝒊𝒅 𝒈𝒊𝒓𝒍 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒏 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅." 📚

The book starts with a crazy prologue about a bet between Lila and Maddox, two best friends, that is about to get out of control!!! 💣💣💣

📚 "𝑰 𝒅𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒖𝒄𝒌 𝒉𝒊𝒎." 📚

After the prologue, we go back to where it all started, in high school.
Lila Garcia's only goal is to go to Harvard. She doesn't care about money or status - and certainly not arrogant athletes... so when she comes across Maddox Coulter, the rich, cocky, golden bad boy and the football quarterback... she isn't really impressed. 😬
But Maddox loves challenges, and Lila is his biggest one... because she's the only one who doesn't want him. 💥

📚 “𝒀𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒈𝒊𝒓𝒍 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒇𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒚 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒈𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒖𝒄𝒌 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎.”
“𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒆?”
𝑯𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒅, 𝒘𝒐𝒍𝒇𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒍𝒚. “𝑴𝒚 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒚.” 📚

So what does he do? he goes on his life's mission... exhausting her. 😬
But because they are both stubborn and competitive, a huge war starts between the two. 🔥
Between all the bets, taunts and dares... they become friends. And not just friends... BEST FRIENDS ! 💛
Even so, the hot chemistry is still there, so who will break first? And what will happen when everything blows up in their faces...? 😱

📚 "𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒌 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕?
𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒚?” 📚

The prologue was one of the best I read recently - so I started this book with a lot of expectations, but I was disappointed to find that their relationship started with hatred - because how the hell am I supposed to believe that from nemesis they suddenly became besties??? 😱😱😱

📚 "𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒌𝒆𝒏 𝒉𝒆𝒓. 𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒌𝒆𝒏 𝒎𝒆. 𝑴𝒂𝒚𝒃𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒘𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓." 📚

And yet, Maddox was no bully. He was kind of a creepy stoker, and I'm not sure what I think about it. He gave her HELL, but... following her around the school isn't exactly bulling... 😂
I loved his character (even though he was frustrating, annoying and childish) and I hurt for him when I realized what made him the man he is today - a lost boy who grow to be a broken man that just wants to belong to someone. 😍💛

📚 “𝑰𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒌𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒈.”
𝑴𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒐𝒙 𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒏𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆… 𝒗𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏. 𝑯𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒆𝒍𝒔𝒆...” 📚

But - the connection between them? I couldn't understand it... I remained curious to see how it will happen eventually (in case you were wondering, it was silly) - and unfortunately, it totally ruined the credibility of the story for me... I would liked it better if, for example, they were friends forever... after all, Maddox wanted Lila's ass from the moment he laid eyes on her (and not to play cards, go shopping or talk boys). 😂💥
But after I stopped rolling my eyes in a life-threatening way (I asked my doctor and he said there wasn't a health risk 😂), suddenly the plot changed direction - all the hate disappeared and only their friendship remained... and I have to admit that I LOVED their friendship...
Gee, I wish I had a best friend like him!!! 💛💛💛

📚 "𝑺𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒎 𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒚 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒌𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆.
𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒐𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒐𝒏𝒆." 📚

Also, I didn't like Lila. She was supposed to be this strong, bad-ass woman who stands up to Maddox... but that didn't work for me. one chapter she was awesome and the next she was acting like a rag... 😬

And that's exactly my dilemma - the beginning was WOW! The middle was MEH... and the ending...? It was fucking WOW again! 😱💣
This book had so much potential, DAMN IT!!!

I have to admit it never happened to me before - not falling off my feet for a book, but still curious to find out what happens next... All I can hope for is that the second part of the duet will be better for me! 💛

I was excited to read this book and i really enjoyed it until it became wayyy to dramatic. And let me warn you about lila’s grandmother WHO TRAUMATISED ME!!! Oh god, she is so fucking dramatic, whenever she opened her mouth i was like “ NO GRANNY STOP! THIS AINT SOAP OPERA” i cant, it was just too much and there was not chemistry between lilah and maddox. I liked it more when they fought, there was a heat but when they desired each other it felt like they brother and sisters.

For a book like this, and showing that both of the main characters are broken just put me off. I wanted to dnf it so many times but didnt cuz i thought that it would get better but the ending was worse. Maddox had a bad childhood, lilah was disturbed by her past, and the fact that this book is kinda funny and slow burn with two broken characters it just ruined my reading.

The slow burn at the beginning was interesting along with their banter but it got boring as the story continued. I liked lilah’s character cuz she is strong and sassy, especially that scene where Maddox was scared of the dark and she held him. I loved that scene. But as i said, i like them more as friends than couples cuz there is no chemistry.

For maddox whatever lilah wears should be illegal, I literally never heard the word illegal so many times in my life but in this book whenever lilah dresses up, maddox says it should be illegal. I mean, SHOULD SHE START WEARING LEAVES NOW!? SINCE ALL DRESSES ARE ILLEGAL!! Ugh i got so annoyed by that.

I loveed reilly and colton tho, i need a book for them cuz i like them more than maddox and lilah. I laughed a lot while reading, but i cannot ignore the fact that this book was a disappointment

✨“If there’s a God, He doesn’t want me to be happy."✨

Maddox Coulter. Reckless bad boy. Infamous playboy. My nemesis. And now my best friend.
JUST WOW !
This book was something else.
I read some really good reviews and I have to say they were definitely right . Maddox gained a special place in my heart.
ME AT THE END OF THIS BOOK:

I was hooked since the prologue (by the way WHAT WAS THAT?!)
This book was filled with sexual tension but also with something more that can't really be described , something more than just caring or love .
The only think I'm sure of is that Maddox and Lila were meant to be together in a way or the other.
I loved Maddox's sex innuendos and how Lila always challenged him, without never holding back.
How they understand each other without ever specking , they just know.
I'm happy I've waited until the release of the second book , or my heart wouldn't have survived for so long without knowing how their story will end.
This book definitely deserved 4.95 stars
I highly recommend this one,
or better I DARE YOU TO READ IT ;) 🥰

***5 "I got you!!!" stars***

"Who was going to break first?
The player or the prey?"

Wow!!! Just wow!!!! Honestly, i don't know from where to start at this moment...
The prologue was a little bit shocking with this certain dare....
Then their beginning was a little bit rocky, but oh, so entertaining...
Then i got sooooo frustrated.... So frustrated!!!
And then at the end, when i thought that things are turning right after all, bang...
What was that??? What did just happen??? WTF???
Give me the next book... NOWWWWWWW!!!!!

"Friends. We were friends.
I thought maybe... he wanted more. More of me. More of us, of what we were or could be. I was so damn wrong.
Maddox Coulter was still an asshole behind a pretty mask.
And I was the stupid girl who fell in love with her best friend."

Phew!!!! Everything started three years ago...
A cocky rich boy and a not so priviledged, but feisty girl started an unexpected war...
They did many nasty things to each other and then all this hate toward each other, forced a huge friendship...
Lila and Maddox became best friends but they never forgot their old ways...
Their pranks turned out to dares....
And then one day the things got more complicated and a dare will turn everything upside down...

"What does that make me?"
He grinned, wolfishly. "My prey."

“Maddox Coulter was neither Prince Charming nor the... villain. He was something else, and I didn’t know exactly where to place him.”

Well, the truth is that there were always feelings between these two...
Maddox always wanted to get into Lila's pants, but she managed to avoid it cause she didn't actually like him... He was too cocky, too immature, too arrogant...
And then, she started to know him under the surface and he crawled under her skin as she was under his...
Unfortunately, they masked their attarction into friendship and it worked really good for a while...
And then... nothing will ever be the same...
"I dare you to fuck him, Lila".

"Somehow, Lila Garcia became more than just my prey.
She was someone I wanted to protect.
From the world.
From me."

"Maddox and I...
We were more than friends but less than lovers. That was our relationship; there was no real definition. We were somewhere in the middle, tangling over the edge of something that could forever break us."

Well, i loved Maddox so much, even though he was really immature at the beginning, but hey, he was just seventeen...
Under the surface, this easygoing guy with all this charm and big smiles, is suffering, but to tell you the truth, i'm still missing some pieces of his past...
Lila, also has her own issues... The last thing she needs is a clingy unwanted admirer!!!
I loved how she was loving a challenge as much as Maddox did!!!
These two were so perfect for each other in every aspect.... They were balm for each other's soul!!!

"I realized Maddox Coulter was a little bit ruined, a little bit messy, a little bit broken -- a beautiful disaster.
Like me."

"Life had broken her.
Just as it had broken me.
Maybe it was why we found each other.
Call it fate, kismet... or maybe it was God's doing...
Lila was meant to hold my broken pieces together; just as I was meant to hold the shattered pieces of hers. No, she didn't fix me, and I didn't fix her. We just... held each other; it was that simple."

And now, what??? I'm so scared of what had happened in the end and what will happen after all...
Why these two are always making messes???
They love each other and it took them so long to acknowledge it!!!! So long that all this sexual tension was driving me crazy...
And now, i can wait to learn what will happen next!!!!!
Oh, also, i would love to see Riley and Colton's story!!!! I want them together!!!! Yeah, i really do!!!!

"What we had; it was an unspoken understanding with unsaid words and a feeling we couldn't explain. Love was too simple a word to describe it because love was black and white. Love or don't love - there was not really an in- between.
What we had... it was a kaleidoscope of colors."

“If there’s a God, He doesn’t want me to be happy. Maybe it’s my fault because I pushed you into the arms of another man. But He won’t let me have you even though I begged him to let me love you freely. I can’t remember the last time I asked Him for something. I guess... I’m not meant to have what I want. My parents. A family. You. You. You,”

3.5 stars.

When I saw the title and the cover of this book, I thought this was going to be the typical book where the girl lets the guy treat her badly and walk all over her, but as I started reading this I was surprised to find out that this was a slow burn enemies to friends to lovers book.

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed seeing these two characters developing a strong friendship but the only thing that bothered me was the slow burn. I like slow burn romances, but what I don’t like is when the characters express their feelings for each other almost at the ending of the book. I didn’t get to see these two characters as a couple because when they finally were going to try being a couple the book ended; but since this is a duet and not a standalone, we will hopefully get to see them as a couple in the second and final book.

I really can’t wait to read the second book because the epilogue left me with so many questions.

I hate spoilers, but I think that something here might be considered one, so I'm putting into a tag....

I liked this book but it bothered me because I didn't thought that it would be soooooo slow burn.

I guess that the author's intention was to show how they grow up as friends, and how they support each other's trough all the darkness and their fears, but a lot was left unspoken about the whys.

It's a duet, and since I get attached to this broken couple, I will continue to the second book.
I just hope that the slow pace doesn't follow.

Decent book. Maddox was hot, but there was I think a little too much push and pull for me to actually enjoy it or to read the second one. They just kept using the "friend" excuse, over and over again, and it got a little repetitive and a bit annoying. At the end of the book, they finally get together and are for months, off book, and then it shows them spitting up again over something he did, which I'm sure will lead the second book, and after going through all the drama with them in the first, that is just a little too much for me.

"I dare you to stay."

"I dare you to give us a chance."

"I dare you, Lila."

I'm a sucker for a friends to lovers and Lila and Maddox had so much love for each other—some parts of this were really sweet and pure. It was nothing groundbreaking plot wise and the time jump from high school to college took me out of the story for a bit because I couldn't really picture them being only friends for three years when they already had such a sexually charged friendship, but that was my only main gripe I think. I did really like Lila though. I liked that even in her head she didn't fawn over Maddox, and she never let him get away with any shit.

”I dare you to fuck him.”

Holllllllllly shit!
What was that?!

I have been so excited to read Do You Dare and Lylah James did not disappoint.

The slow burn just about killed me off. The amount of times I was screaming at my kindle “JUST GET TOGETHER ALREADY!!!!”

”Who was going to break first?
The player or the prey?”

This book consumed me. Like sucked me in and swallowed me whole. I couldn’t put it down. Adulting didn’t happen. I devoured it in one sitting.

I just love Maddox. That man. Gahhhh he is the most frustrating, beautifully broken guy. Once he let Lila in, I couldn’t have loved him more if I tried. I loved the back and forth, the banter and sass between them. But do you know what I loved the most... their friendship.

”Maddox Coulter- the balm you my soul but also the stinging pain in my chest. He was sweet heaven and the bane of my existence.”

I didn’t expect to cry at this book. I didn’t expect to uncontrollably sob my heart out. I cried for them and their pain because I felt it in my soul.

I loved Lila. I loved just how strong she was. She never backed down. She had been through so damn much and still she held her head up high. Not letting people walk all over her.

Do you dare is a bully/enemies to lovers- to friends to lovers romance book that will leave you swooning, swearing and shouting for more. The angst levels were excruciating, but oh so worth it.

Epic!

I NEED MORE NOW! I did not see that ending coming but I'm oh so intrigued! I mean what is going on? What the heck happened in 4 months?

This book was pretty amazing if I do say so my self. To read through the different phases of their relationship was great. They had such a beautiful friendship that makes you just wish you had that bond with someone. On a side note I'm also curious about Riley! Book 2 cannot come soon enough!

I'm completely obsessed with this book, it was so different from anything i've ever read, and i was surprised by the writing of Lylah outside the mafia universe, and seriously Lylah just keep going. Seriously maddoxlila just served a enemies to best friends, friends to lovers, and an unusual slown burn.

“Pinky swear, me and you... forever.”

I loved Maddox in the first pages, he won me over with his playboy and charming way, but through his smiles, jokes, he is so lonely, abandoned by his parents and all he wanted most was their attention, but really what really made me fall in love with him was his evolution through the pages, he has been less and less caring about his parents and always trying to do his best.

“She was the calm in my reckless life.
I was the chaos in her peaceful one.”

Lila with all the certainties in this world became one of my favorite characters, she is so strong, funny and very unique, just like Maddox she also has her problems and traumas and a lot but i think it's beautiful how she deals with them, how she loves her grandparents, Riley and Maddox, and how it leaves no one to put it down.

“Lila was meant to hold my broken pieces together; just as I was meant to hold the shattered pieces of hers.”

I loved that both Maddox and Lila love a challenge, they both really complete each other, to see their evolution from enemies, to best friends and so naturally, this book has almost nothing of romance, we have a lot of friendship and companionship and a lot of sexual tension between these two, until one day it exploded.... I confess that i am very worried with how the development of the second book will be, that epilogue ended me.

4,4 or 4,5 in between Stars

Love was too simple of a word to describe it because love was black and white. Love or don’t love – there was not really an in-between. What we had… it was a kaleidoscope of colors.

Tags: Enemies to Friends to Lovers, NA Romance, Slow Burn

Maddox Coulter: Blue eyes, blonde curled hair, 6'3, 20; The Casanova, the richest, the most popular boy that every girl desperately in love with, the star quarterback, the douche in the outside but on the inside not? The guy is so full of himself, but he is lovely too.

Lila Garcia: Brown eyes, black hair, small boobs, 5'2, 20; straight-A student who is really passionate in English and wants to attend Harvard. She might not be the popular one, but she totally has the spirit. She is a rebel at heart; competitive, smart, confident, and a flirty girl. She wants it; she gets it.

Their story starts from their senior year of high school.

PROS

*The story reminded me of Love Me If You Dare (only the bet, but still, this made me love it immediately)
*The book is soo ANGSTY. There's a never-ending drama which I adore (Soap opera kind or telenovela)
* Medusa's painful life is also indicated here as an assignment. Maddox was the one who did the research better. (Sorry, Lila)
*I like both of the MCs, and their relationship in every phase. They definitely have chemistry and I totally ship them
*Maddox is a fellow smoker.
*Maddox might be a bully, but Lila never ever holds back!
*Maddox calls Lila dragon.
*Lila drinks tea at home in the evenings.
*They both gave each other dream catchers as first presents (His was Tiffany's of course, do they even sell it in there?)
*Lila is into K-drama/K-pop, and Maddox watches K-drama with her. AWWW

Call it fate, kismet… or maybe it was God’s doing… Lila was meant to hold my broken pieces together; just as I was meant to hold the shattered pieces of hers. No, she didn’t fix me, and I didn’t fix her. We just… held each other; it was that simple.

CONS

Too much sexism + slut-shaming. (TOO MUCH)

DRINKING GAME SUGGESTION

Take a shot every time someone says "PUSSY OR COCK’’ I guarantee that you can get super drunk even within random 10 pages. Yeah, they use it thaat much!

OVERALL

*It is an easy and fast read. It's a hell of a slow burn (but the sexual tension is always there, thanks to never-ending Maddox talking). I enjoyed it soo much. It was angsty, funny, sexy, and entertaining.

*If you think you can manage to love a boy-hole who adores his cock the most and his first aim to always get the pussy, you can very well enjoy this book too. Normally he is not the type I easily like but somehow, I ended up seriously loving the guy. I guess the heart wants what it wants…

*It ended with a Cliffhanger!! I am suuuper optimistic about the second book!

My goodness! It's been a long a** wait for this book but it was so darn worth it! Gah, Maddox and Lila exceeded all my expectations. I loved these two. There was so much fire between them at every single stage of their relationship. The banter and back and forth between them is everything. The chemistry is sooo clear. Lylah did an outstanding job with these two! The banter, the longing, the angst at the end... she pulled at my heartstrings left and right but also made things so incredibly hot throughout the book and this is a freaking slow slow burn.

Lila is one of the sassiest heroines I've ever read and I just loved her to bits. She did not let anyone put her down, she did not give in, she did not give up. She had balls of steel and I was here for it. She gave Maddox a run for his money.
Maddox was the football star, the school's most desired guy. He is a hit and quit guy and he will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants...well until Lila catches his attention, that is. Lila does not fall at his feet, she stands tall and plays at his level. But behind his a-hole mask and his popularity lies a broken little boy who has been through a lot.

Suddenly these two go from enemies who love to play pranks on each other to best friends who make each other feel alive with their game of dares and who are there for each other no matter what. Lila and Maddox have the most beautiful friendship and I loved watching them go from enemies to best friends to a taste of them being more.

This book would have ended on a high note if it weren't for that epilogue... oh boy, I am scared of what's coming next. I have a feeling our emotions have seen nothing yet and Lylah is gonna put us through the ringer in book 2. And I cannot wait until it's here!

Do You Dare is an enemies to bestfriends unlike anything I've ever read... YOU NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIFE.

„Pinky swear, me and you… forever.”

Oh my GOD! This book is phenomenal! I’m totally OBSESSED with this story and with Maddox Coulter. Lylah James shook my world. Do You Dare consumed me completely and I couldn’t tear myself away from this read. Lila, Maddox and their explosive hate/love relationship took control of my life and I couldn't think of anything else but how their story would unfold. This book is so addictive that you can forget about adulting until you finish, I’m not kidding.

Maddox Coulter… I can't even say his name without drooling. Every girl's wet dream. Sinfully sexy, school's most popular guy, complete playboy. You know the type... Every guy wants to be like him and every girl wants to be under him. But as it turns out, there is one girl whom Coulter doesn’t impress at all, on the contrary - she despises him. Lila Garcia is not like the rest of her peers in school. She doesn’t come from rich and influental family. But she’s beautiful, smart and determined to reach her goals. But the most important- she doesn’t bend to Coulter’s constant teasing. She gives as much as she gets, she’s feisty and strong. At first Maddox treated her like a challenge. Their mutual malevolence was full of insults and pranks. But this acquaintance has quickly evolved into the most unique and fantastic friendship. They shared a special bond and they they got to know each other from every possible angle, even the broken parts. Lila and Maddox became the most important people in the world for each other. For years nobody and nothing could stand between them. Until one bet gone wrong and threatened what they had.

Do You Dare is brilliant, unputdownable and addicting. The storyline is amazing, characters are flawed but so perfectly developed that there’s no other way- you’ll fall madly in love with them! I was so immersed in this book that I don’t know what was happening around me, I’m not even sure that I’ve blinked during this read. Lylah James created my new obsession and I’m waiting with bated breath for the continuation! I need more Lila and Maddox! This is definitely one of my top reads this year!

Okay yes. This was so freaking good I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

Maddox is so fucking hot. He’s possessive as hell over Lila and just the way he changes from annoying the fuck out of her to loving her so openly was such a great character development that unfolded. The banter between them was so entertaining and the dares were such a great add to the plot.

Lila is so sweet, but has so much sass only directed towards Maddox. I swear there was never a dull moment between the two. I loved how adamant she was at being his friend because their bond is unmatched. Their friendship was just so nice to see, especially how close they were in college. I just really loved this and am immediately starting book 2.

1.5 STARS I thought I could like this, but this book was kind of a mess. It's enemies to friends to lovers but it was a little over the top with too many clichés. I felt like the author tried including every possible scenario, which then made the writing not very good. I also hated that things happened and time passed very quickly and instead of reading about the things that happened while it was happening, we were told about it instead through a memory or flashback. I hate when books do that. Overall this wasn't interesting enough for me to pick up book 2.

This book depressed the hell out of me
The MC reminded me of my favorite anime cople of all time Nalu
Nalu is the ship name for natsu and Lucy both of whom are best friends slash almost lover's.
Natsu and Lucy first met by accident a guy was using spells to make women fall in love with him and takes them on his boat to sell them ,natsu saved Lucy and the other girls took her to her dream house called fairytail a magical guild. Natsu and Lucy bonded quickly becoming best friends even though both are so different from each other Lucy loves princess stuff ,dreams of a prince charming, she loves reading ,was a journalist, and is currently a best selling author. While natsu is a 400+ year demon, loves fighting, eating, and teasing his best friend Lucy .
Now this couple they care about each other so much and will practically do anything for each other including get the other cursed , they're sexual chemistry and tension is so hot that at some point Natsu had a boner for the girl , they pin each other to walls, lick ,grind on each other, share each other clothes, bicker ,live with each other, they've even gone so far as to fake sexual moaning sounds with each other , they've slept naked with each other and have almost kissed each other 3 times!!
You would think that they'll be progress they would act or talk about it like normal people but no
Natsu and Lucy brush such things aside as it being examples of best friends!!🙄

It's been 18 fucking years and natsu and Lucy are still best friends. You see why I hate this book, I already have major headache with natsu and Lucy I don't need this two wannabe.

Holy shit.

I’m not sure what else to say right now.

Edit: okay I got myself together now on with the review 😅

4.5 stars

Let me start by saying that if you are not a fan of enemies to friends trope or super, and I mean SUPER, slowburns then this is probably not going to be the book for you. That being said, it was astounding how good this book really was. I was pretty surprised with how much I loved it. There are a few questionable choices that are obnoxious that I will elaborate on but I feel like that comes with the territory of books like this so I tend to just ignore them.

Also you need to keep in mind when reading it that this is a duet so it’s more like a part 1, part 2, rather than books 1 and 2 in a series. Meaning this is the beginning of their relationship when they meet to a cliffhanger ending of them in college. In other words is mostly enemies-friends-best friends-something more but they never really get to the lovers part. That’s hopefully going to be in the next book. I would keep that in mind when reading so your not surprised or upset by the ending in any other way that the way your supposed to.

Things I loved about this book:

-Maddox was your stereotypical more than meets the eye, scarred, broken, bad boy…except he also wasn’t. I felt like he had a lot more nuanced layers than expected and he felt like a real person. My heart ached for him throughout the whole book and I have a feeling that will continue through the next one. I hated his parents with my whole being and would gladly knock his dad upside the head. I loved Maddox because of how hardworking, dedicated, committed, loyal, and caring he was. There’s so much more I could say about him but you need to read it and find out for yourself. Let’s just say I cannot wait to see him as a boyfriend.
-I actually really liked Lila which kinda surprised me because of what I had read about her. To be honest I didn’t really get the idea that she was slut-shaming just bitch-shaming.🤣 I loved her sass and her snark. I loved her comebacks and how tough she was. But I also loved that she let herself be vulnerable. I loved how she took no shit and was insanely loyal. She was also hilarious and sarcastic and quirky. She was a very interesting and unique character.
-I’m going to have to split the aspects of their relationship up into parts because there’s so much that I loved about it.
-I can’t say much because I don’t want to spoil but the scene in the dark room was written so well. I was tearing up and could imagine myself from both perspectives. I understand those struggles so I felt that in a way that was devastating and beautiful.
-The enemies part of their relationship was written really well. Personally I don’t love when enemies is written as the male bullying or humiliating the female. It’s degrading and not hot at all to me. But when it’s fiery banter and pranks that go both ways I love the enemies trope. Their “hate” banter when they were in high school was spectacular and I could feel the sexual tension and regular tension between them rolling of the pages.
-The transition from truce to friends was done wonderfully as well. I loved their cute pinky promises all throughout this one and the “I dare you’s” I loved how their banter shifted when they became friends instead of going away I became more because they cared for one another and knew a lot about the other. I loved how they pushed each other to be better and go outside of their comfort zone. I loved how they learnt to let one another in and let go of things. I loved how they transitioned to being the most important people in their lives and how supportive and understanding they were. I loved how Maddox held Lila at sunset park. I loved Maddox’s protectiveness of his best friend that totally wasn’t jealousy at all (note the strong sarcasm). They were truly everything that enemies-friends-best friends were supposed to be and I could go on and on about the things I loved in their relationship.
-I loved how Lila was ready to go to war for Maddox and how he wouldn’t stand for anyone insulting her. I loved how they talked over situations when they fought or had disagreements. I loved the dance scenes and overall the last few chapters were just filled with so much sexual tension it was palpable. I loved how deeply they cared for each other.
-I loved the way that Maddox said that Lila didn’t need a savior or someone to swoop in and rescue her but that he would always be by her side to fight WITH her.
-I loved how he called her is little dragon(cutest nickname ever!!)
-I loved Riley she was hilarious and a great friend to Lila. I loved how she was supportive of Lila and Maddox and that she was their tension first.
-I loved the drama between Riley, Grayson, and Colton. I would not mind a RileyxColton book at all!

Things I didn’t love:

-There is a very questionable scene in the beginning where the girls go to a Halloween party and the boys, who are covered in costumes, grab them and take them behind the school. But the girls didn’t know what was happening and were very scared that they were getting kidnapped or were going to be molested. This is a very real fear especially as females and could be a big trigger so I don’t think it was okay for the boys to do this. I wanted Lila to rip Maddox a new one to make sure everyone knew this wasn’t okay and she didn’t so this scene was not handled well and shouldn’t have been included in the book.
-I didn’t always love how Maddox referee to women it was a little degrading language wise but I feel like that’s a common mistake when trying to make your mmc seem like a bad boy so it didn’t really affect my opinion of Maddox because it didn’t seem like he was sexist the author just could have written it more respectfully

In the end this was a wonderful book that I absolutely loved and it was super unique in terms of how it was mainly focused on the transition from rivals/enemies to best friends. The slow burn and tension was immaculate throughout.

Quotes I loved:

“Harsh,” he mumbled. “I like you when you’re a spitfire, like a little annoyed dragon.”

“Lila waved at me to come inside, and my feet followed. If I was a puppy, my tail would be wagging back and forth.”

“But there was just something about Lila that kept me...grounded.”

“Don't wanna lose you,” he mumbled…Our fingers interlaced together, and his hold tightened…“You're... more,” he whispered the confession. “Don’t leave, Lila.”

“Maddox Coulter was a little bit ruined, a little bit messy, a little bit broken -- a beautiful disaster. Like me.”

“All those reasons were no longer important, because every morning, he’d wait outside my grandparents’ home, he’d hand me a muffin and follow my bus to school. Every afternoon, he’d sit with me and study – something he hasn’t done in years. He hated studying, he hated opening a textbook, but he did it anyway. Because of a dare, because of me – he did it for me.”

“He angered me, made me want to scream in frustration, he drove me utterly crazy, but as much as he had me sighing in exasperation and rolling my eyes... he made me smile.”

“Berkshire is celebrating tonight. I need my favorite person there.”

“I grabbed her before she could slide off the bench, her body weak in her grief. Our knees dug into the damp mud, but I didn’t care as I pulled her into my arms. She was half sitting on my lap, her face buried in my neck as her tears soaked through my shirt and against my skin.”

“Wild emotions swirled inside me as I breathed in her pain and suffering.”

“I took a deep breath and made my first promise to Maddox. “You won't lose me. Ever.”
He was quiet for a moment, and I thought I messed up, until his hand came into the line of my vision, and he showed me his pinky.
“Promise?” he asked softly.”

“Lila Garcia was already the best thing in my life.”

“His arm flexed around my hips. “I know.” His hold tightened around me in the slightest bit. His lips feathered over my forehead in a whisper of a kiss, before he placed his cheek on top of my head again. “I love you, too.”

“A beautiful smile spread across her lips, and she laughed a bit, the little happy sound shooting straight to my heart.”

“Lila asked,” he grumbled, running his fingers through his hair. “I couldn’t say no.”

“You’re drunk,” I accused.
“You’re so beautiful,” he blurted out.

I took a step toward her, unable to stop myself. “Gorgeous. Beautiful. Exquisite. Stunning. Lovely. Angelic. Breathtaking. Ravishing. Elegant. Bewitching. Alluring. Heavenly. The angels would bow to you because they can’t compete. So. Fucking. Exquisite.”

“I dare you to stay.” His lips touched mine again. My heart stuttered.
“I dare you to give us a chance.”

Title: Do You Dare? (Truth and Dare #1)
Author: Lylah James

I am always excited to read any new releases by Lylah James. I sound like a broken record but my love for her Tainted Hearts series is never ending. And it is because of this that I will continue to read EVERY SINGLE book written by her...

Do you Dare Teaser 1.jpg
Her latest release Do You Dare? promised a whole lot of sexual tension with it's teasers before the publication date and I for one kept checking my kindle, checking the calendar until my copy of the book arrived on my kindle.

unnamed-3.jpg

Let me tell you, Do You Dare is one GIANT ball of angst and scorching hot chemistry. It's a slow burn romance from HELL... if your idea of hell is a blissful frustration hahaha

The characters Maddox and Lila's personalities are page turners! I really did enjoy reading about them. Lila is no wallflower. She is feisty AF. Now Maddox on the other hand is mister popular with a mix of troublemaker. He is a conundrum... he is cocky and sweet, has a little devilish kick yet his heart is pure.

Do You Dare Teaser 2.jpg

So if you want to read a book that has a medley of enemies to lovers/friends to lovers/bullying/slowburn romance then Do You Dare? is perfect for you!

Be warned though, this ends on a cliffhanger.

First of all, what the FUCK was that epilogue?????
Okay, so I thought I wasn’t going to like this book. At all. When it started I thought this was like a typical teenager Wattpad story. Good girl with straight As and bad boy who barely goes to class, they meet, hate each other but lowkey want to fuck. That kind of Wattpad thing.
BUT I must say, I ended up loving it. I just can’t resist a good slow-burn friends-to-lovers book. And yes, it starts as a enemies theme, but it ends up being so damn cute. It reminds me a lot of Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire (maybe also because its MC was named Travis Maddox? Mhhn), which was my freaking book when I was younger. Still, love that it’s slow burn and not insta love.
Also, loooove Maddox. He can be a real asshole at times, but he gets so damn cute with Lila. Ugh. Just my kind of character.
Overall, this book can get a little on your nerves at times and can be very cliché, but if you are a true friends-to-lovers fan, I’m positive you’ll end up loving it. (Though that cliff-hanger epilogue??? Irrelevant)

⭐️ 5 "Pinky Swear" Stars ⭐️
Wow! Do you Dare? was such an incredible read! It was my first time reading Lylah James and she totally hooked me on this story! Lila and Maddox’s relationship is complex, beautiful, intense and poignant! This novel was different than what I was expecting, but in a very good way!!!

Most of the book is set in high school when they soon become enemies, but their relationship slowly evolves into a powerful friendship. Maddox is truly a cocky guy being the star quarterback, but Lila doesn’t fall for his charm and answers him with poise and sass. At first it’s sexy innuendos and tactic to put her in his bed, but they recognize something special in the other and become friends! They’re the best of friends. The banter between these two are so entertaining and had me laughing.

As much as both characters show a strong front and carefree attitude to others, they’re a little broken inside. Maddox doesn’t have the best life at home, despite his family’s wealth and Lila losing her parents a few years before broke her. They’re both afraid to love and lose again! They’re scared of losing the most important person in their life; each other!

I must say that I was really surprised that this story is a slow burn. The progression of their romantic feelings and acting on them happens so late in the story! I was so frustrated by their level of chemistry and them both denying them for years! When I thought “oh yes, it’s finally happening” I was wrong and frustrated, lol! But at the same time, it made the moment they let go even more amazing and full of feels and passion. They have such a palpable connection!!!

Do You Dare? is truly a must read! I loved, loved, loved this book and can’t wait for the next one! With this shocking ending I need answers ASAP!!!! I discovered a great author in Lylah James and can’t wait to also read her novels she previously released!

Oh my gosh..THIS BOOK! It deserves more than 5 stars, it was amazing! Can I give it 10 stars? Yeah? Okay good, this gets a 10 star rating from me! This book is far from just another enemies to lovers romance...oh no, while they may start out as enemies at first, they soon become the best of friends, and their relationship is absolutely beautifully.

Lila and Maddox are one heck of a team and throughout the entire book I’m over here screaming “CAN’T YOU SEE HOW PERFECT YOU TWO ARE TOGETHER!?!” They kept keeping each other at an arms length to avoid overstepping the friend boundary, until one night they ventured into dangerous territory.

I thought all was good up until that epilogue! And now I’m left not so patiently waiting for the next book! Haha. Gahhhhhhh it was amazing and I’m left dying for more right now!

From the reviews I have read, it sounds too frustrating. I really really hate, "I want him/her but I am scared I will lose his/her friendship if we become lovers" bullsh*t!

The book also sounds too slow for my taste, I am not a fan of slow burn....
