Stockholm and a case of worms
Ella has the crappiest job. Her boss is verbally abusive, overworks her, and she doesn't get paid nearly enough for all that. After rather vocally resigning, her car breaks down, storms roll in, and she gets struck by lightning. But the weirdest part was waking up in the ocean. Did a tornado get her after the lightning?
Spoilers ahead.
Oh. Oh, where to begin. The memory info-dumps didn't help. They didn't offer character insight. They didn't add to the plot. They were essentially useless. The inner monologues describing themselves were odd. Show us what they look like through Ella's eyes. Why write out her words when they can't understand them? Why was she always yelling? Why give us Arh's POV when he isn't a mate? She was there for 3 weeks and never once considered her period? Why would she be forced to choose 3 mates when they aren't even sure she can have their kids? If she was supposed to choose from all the eligible bachelors, why didn't we meet more? They all lined up like they had a chance but never interacted with her. Arh ignored her for weeks, after throwing meat on her feet, but honestly thought she'd choose him? She ate all fruit. She might escape scurvy but no leafy greens means she's going to bruise like a peach. No nuts or cheese for protein? And she just chomped in without testing anything on her lip or wrist for a reaction. Anaphylaxis is no joke. And there's this mold that's supposed to be deadly but they never wear their masks in the woods to protect themselves from it. Or make her a mask before dragging her into the woods. She wears the same clothes for weeks without a change or washing them. No mention of baths, a way to clean teeth- sugars from fruits can cause cavities. Giant reptiles, birds, leeches and more are a constant threat but they are never mentioned as carrying weapons, except when Karr miraculously pulls his spear out of nowhere. He describes things using words that have latin roots instead of giving their names for things. Why would periwinkle be a color known to them? They have a different name for everything else but he's going to monologue about periwinkle flora? They discover they can communicate through drawing in the dirt. But after weeks they still can't communicate? Tree, dragon, man eating bird, how do your ladies handle menses, where's the toilet, and do you guys have a toothbrush, hi, bye, he scares me, a lack of vitamin D from sunshine being holed in this cave can hurt me,... Weeks of learning and communicating nothing. Until the time comes to pick a mate. THAT she picks up, sure. And for a complete virgin she takes on 3 men, in all the important orifices, at once, straight out the gate? No lube and barely a warm up? Yeah, no. Then, immediately after, knowing giant things want to eat her, she goes traipsing in the woods and gets lost in the swamp with bus sizes leeches trying to eat her. And no one has mentioned the mold to her. But moisture is a factor and swamps are notoriously damp. When you read a sci-fi romance you suspend reality somewhat. But this just had so little thought out into it. The idea was interesting. But some beta readers could have helped flesh things out, filled in some plot holes, moved things along. Books are plot driven, character driven or world based. The only plot seems to be storm relocation and a dying culture needing women. The characters don't change, evolve, and barely bond. And there really is next to no world building. It needs some love. Show us the weeks of trying to learn each other's language. Show us her learning their culture. Show us her learning how to do daily chores for survival and bonding with the guys over it. Show us carefully planned wood walks where she learns where the things she can eat come from. Maybe she wants to help Karr fish, Dew gather food, or help Bahl sew clothes? She exists merely for them to mate with, the entire point of this story, and it's rather sad.
