I’ll be honest straight up, I know the author of this book
I purchased the book to support the author
I read the book because I was curious about what he had to say

These types of books, self-help books are not really my cup of tea and not generally something I would pick up. I respect people who read them and use them, I’m just not usually one of them.

I thought Dave did a great job of incorporating his message by using his own experiences. By using these experiences he easily set the stage for how he turned his life towards who he wanted to be and the tools used, and then gave the tools to the reader to start their own journey. It made it easier to understand the steps and why they were taken.

It was hard reading about his school experiences. I think the saying is correct that you never know what someone else is going through, so it was also hard learning that his depression was so bad and the behaviour of some of the other students and teachers created a world for him that he actually thought about leaving. The steps he took to change that around were well thought out and evolved throughout the book as he evolved as the new David Gillman.

There are no quick and easy fixes. Work was required over years to get to where he was happy with the person he was. Ideas were explored and courage shown to face his fears and pursue his dreams. I liked that he didn’t back away from the mistakes he made either during his path to where he is now, they were laid out and discussed to show just why and how they were unproductive.

All in all a good read. I’m glad I read it.

Developing compassion and healthy self-talk is what this book is all about.

I like David's story because he learned how to manage his emotions at a young age. Having said that, not a lot of us are as brave as David, and so we need this book to help us become grounded and see the real-life story of a boy, now a man, overcome the mental stresses in life.

I loved reading this book a lot! I know that it will be useful to a lot of people who are contemplating suicide and not knowing what to do with this negative mental talk.

This is a must-read! And if we can start reading it now and share it with our friends and family, then we do not know who we are saving from the demise of depression and suicide.
