Where Is God?: Christian Faith in the Time of Great Uncertainty
Should we battle a plural and relativistic society by raising barriers and walls, or should we accept the opportunity to announce the Gospel in a new way? This is the challenge Christians are facing today. In an extended interview with Vatican expert Andrea Tornielli, Julián Carrón examines the historical moment we are living through in order to revive the essential core of Christian faith. Starting from the realization that the world is experiencing an evolution in which the difficulty of finding shared values and natural morality makes sincere dialogue between believers and non-believers challenging, Carrón reflects on the possibility of communicating the essence of the Christian faith in a form that can inspire interest in modern times. Addressing the central questions concerning the announcement of Christian faith in today’s less regimented society, Where Is God? discovers and rediscovers the contents of Christianity and asks how they can be witnessed again in a society that is not yet post-Christian, but potentially headed in that direction.

Dit boek daagde me uit om over mijn om na te denken over hoe ik mijn geloof beleef en wat het voor mij betekent. Pasgeleden heb ik Julian Carron een keer mogen ontmoeten en ik herkende dan dus ook veel van de uitspraken in de interviews met de journalist van wie ik de naam even vergeten ben.
De manier waarop Carron over het geloof spreekt is vooral heel liefdevol en het laat je nadenken over je eigen ervaringen in het leven. Of in ieder geval dat was zo bij mij.
De Engelse vertaling vond ik niet altijd even goed en ook vond ik het vervelend dat alle verwijzingen achter in het boek staan in plaats van onderaan de pagina, waardoor je ze dus nooit bekijkt. Zonde! Naar de journalist die Carron interviewde heb ik niet zoveel onderzoek gedaan, maar ik vond het ook erg jammer dat de vragen die hij stelde soms geen vragen waren, maar stellingen en daarnaast dat hij soms erg vooringenomen en sturend overkwam, waardoor het soms niet aanvoelde als een echt gesprek, maar meer als een uiteenzetting waar alles aan bod moet komen. Dat is wel gelukt. Er komt heel veel aan bod en ik heb het boek graag gelezen.

This book is a thought-provoking exploration of how one lives a Christian faith in an increasingly secular age. Carron is a Spanish Roman Catholic priest and leader of the ecclesial movement Communion and Liberation, who engages in a theological conversation with an Italian journalist, Andrea Tornielli. The challenges facing contemporary Christians are similar to those of the early church and Carron and Tornielli try to rediscover the essence of Christianity and how the faith can be testified to today. Carron criticizes the “reduction of Christianity to ethics and moralism” and emphasizes the need for a “lived Christianity” in which people experiencing Christ’s forgiving presence respond to others with mercy and face evil without despair. Carron also firmly believes that faith cannot be forced on anyone, and should be spread through attraction, not proselytization. This book provided encouragement and wisdom during these challenging times.

Este es un libro que se siente muy actual. Julián Carrón escribe con un lenguaje cercano, pero sin simplificar en exceso, sobre cómo vivir la fe cristiana en un mundo lleno de incertidumbres y miedos.
Lo que más me gustó es que no ofrece respuestas prefabricadas ni frases de consuelo fáciles. Más bien invita a mirar la realidad —con sus luces y sombras— sin cerrar los ojos, y a descubrir ahí la presencia de Dios. Habla de crisis personales, de dolor y de esperanza, y lo hace con ejemplos que cualquiera puede reconocer en su propia vida. Es un texto breve, pero con mucho contenido. Se lee rápido, pero deja ideas y preguntas que acompañan. Un libro para releer en esos momentos en que parece que todo tambalea, y recordar que la fe no es huir, sino mirar con confianza - AE
