I’m honestly not sure what I’ll remember from these stories a month from now....
but there was definitely a freshness to them.
The stories are ( overall), unconventional, (but not shocking).
They tended to blend together.... almost as one long story. The stories in the beginning are longer than the short poetic ones towards the end about memories, sleep, thick thighs, cousins,, aunts, raining days, etc.
The author explores first time sex, coming -of-age and lesbian sex.
‘not’ graphically,
‘not’ straight laced ...
‘not’ particularly sexy either .....but more in the realm of self identity and the general spirited depths of women.
A few doomed relationships...
A few inspiring ones....
I can’t say I was enamored at every turn....but the audiobook did hold my attention with these ‘in our face’ contemporary tales.

All the stories in this book are translated (from the Portuguese, I'm assuming) and about love between women in various types of relationships. I enjoyed reading them, some are super short, and are all just normal life types of stories.

Deitou a cabeça no ombro de Angélica, que lhe deu um beijo na têmpora, um beijo comprido, cheio de pensamentos quentes. Mas foi a coisa mais brega, dita depois, que fez Amora entender: Você é quase toda amor.
I don't know where to begin. Finding out about this book was one of the best things that have ever happened to me, especially because it's really hard to find books about lesbian characters in brazilian literature. When I heard about it, I had to read it immediately.
This book is divided in two parts: the first one has longer short stories, whereas the second one focus on smaller stories. My favorites, by the way, are all almost from the first part, called "Grandes e sumarentas".
A lot of short stories left me wanting more, and all I could think about was that I would LOVE to read a romance with that plot. Maybe that's the only thing I can't say i wasn't into - the fact that they were so short - since I'd love to read more about the main characters of this book.
One of my favorite stories is "Flor, flores, ferro retorcido", which talks about this girl that finds out her neighbor is a lesbian, but she doesn't know what that word means, and her mom lies to her, saying it's a disease. It's so infuriating, but they way the girl acts is so adorable and innocent. She doesn't know she's being lied to. And all she wants is to understand what's happening.
The way Natalia captures women that love other women is so... real, especially in the brazilian context. This is the first brazilian book about lesbians that I've read, so being able to see these women from the same country (and some, if not all of them, from the same state as me) was so, so precious.
I was debating whether I should write this review in English or in Portuguese, but I decided to write it in English because 1) all of my reviews here were written in English, and 2) I want everyone to know about this book. If you have the chance to read it, please do. It's really amazing.

No início, estava gostando bastante dos contos, a leitura me surpreendeu. Porém, lá pelo meio ficou cansativo e irregular e foi difícil seguir em frente. Mais para o final, teve de novo seus bons momentos. Acho que me cansei de ler um livro de contos inteiro sobre a mesma temática. As abordagens não foram tão variadas a ponto de justificar a extensão da coletânea.

Contos de alto nível sobre a vivência lésbica, mas, muito mais do que isso, sobre a vivência humana. Natália Borges Polesso tem, claramente, grande talento e esmero na construção nesses contos, retratando a feminilidade e a homossexualidade de forma humana, singela, expressiva e cuidadosa.
Algo que falta na literatura lésbica e LGBT em geral é o tratamento da orientação sexual ou identidade de gênero de forma natural. Muitos livros existem sobre a "saída do armário", a "descoberta", como se a vivência LGBT se resumisse a isso. Natália amplia essa representação, trazendo, em seus contos conflitos da existência humana e feminina, além de, claro, lésbica.
O retrato da mulher nos contos é tão real que causa identificação imediata, mesmo se a leitora não for lésbica. Se for, a identificação é ainda mais precisa.
Esse livro é belo, singular e importante. Ele representa o mais alto nível da literatura brasileira contemporânea e merece ser trabalho em escolas, em universidades, em grupos de estudos, em todos os eventos literários que possam existir.

A series of short stories featuring various women, of different ages, who are in, or want to be, or were once in a relationship with another woman. I found each story quite engrossing but somehow most of the endings were a little flat. Maybe that was the point, such is life I guess.

Sinto que eu precisava fazer essa leitura nesse exato momento. É um livro tão lindo, tão cheio de desejo, de encanto e de poesia que tornou esses meus últimos dias mais doces e prazerosos. Me trouxe de volta o ânimo (e tantas outras coisas) que 2020 levou embora; me fez sentir novamente aquele calorzinho específico que se sente só quando se ama ou quando se é amado. Me transportou para um lugar bom, deleitoso, sensivelmente único. O lugar das primeiras vezes, das paixões mais intensas e também dos sentimentos não correspondidos. Me fez pensar o amor como esse desejo metafísico, um fim em si mesmo, que tudo move e em tudo consiste.
"Eu penso nessas questões metafísicas do andamento, dos percursos e do corpo, sabe? Essas formas de se abster de uma vida prática e cheia de consternações e flores. Falamos e falamos vulgaridades, mas nada comporta, nada suporta o valor do vivido. (...) A guerra é interior. E não há maneira de expressá-la."

I live in Portugal and am always keen to read the works of Portuguese and Brazilian authors. I reached out to this collection of short stories because I wanted to read a book both in English and its original language. These stories were ideal for this and what an amazing experience I had. It's rare that I enjoy all the stories in an anthology but they were so varied and brimming with emotion that I was convinced at every turn of the page. I very much look forward to reading more by this author!

eu tô COMPLETAMENTE apaixonada por esses contos sáficos incríveis sobre amor, cotidiano, dificuldades, deixar ir, estranheza, descobrimento, não sentir e sentir muito, e tudo de mais natural e humano que poderia ser escrito sobre amor! nem sei muito o que falar porque cada conto me trouxe os melhores sentimentos e me identifiquei demais pelo processo que estou passando de descoberta da sexualidade e aceitação, foi muito importante emergir nesse universo de tanta realidade quanto a minha vida, nunca vi tanta transparência e substância pura (como um conto diz) em um livro. amei como ele mescla todas as idades e os contos com senhoras me tocava ainda mais porque pude ver o quão extenso o amor é, e o quão natural pode ser, o sentimento de encontrar uma família em um perfume cítrico de manhã, nos cabelos, nos lábios vermelhos de alguma. eu tô completamente entregue à amora, à amar mulheres. obrigada autora por me ajudar no meu processo com uma obra tão incrível como essa. me encontrei bem aqui. me encontrei bem. me encontrei.

These stories can be tender, sensual, angry, erotic, humorous, sad, and all of them have that ring of authenticity, when you know you're reading essentially a slice of life.
As with most short story collections, there were ones that resonated more with me and others that didn't make much of an impression, but I'd definitely say more of the former! It's split into two sections, 'Big & Juicy', which are around 10 pages each, and 'Short & Tart', which are flash fiction, some just half a page, but no more than three. I preferred the more developed stories in the first part, but the micro-fiction was well done too, particularly Profanation, written in the second person, and Memory, which just made me achingly sad but in a good way.
Of the longer stories, my favourites were Grandma, Are You a Lesbian? where we see a young girl feel more at peace with her sexuality once she realises she shares more in common with her grandma than she thought. There is a theme of older queer women in my favourites, as I also loved Marília Wakes Up, a tender portrayal of an older couple's Sunday morning routine, which is being derailed by age and forgetfulness, although their love is still strong. I love those stories which celebrate the everyday ordinariness of a relationship, the silly inside jokes that would seem meaningless to anyone outside of it, like in My Cousin's In Town.
The translation from Portuguese by Julia Sanchez is very smooth, and she does a good job handling instances of dialect and slang, which could be difficult to render effectively in English. I did think a few too many stories were narrated in the first person, which led to some of them blending together a bit.
I definitely recommend if you have an interest in LGBTQ+ lit, especially in translation! Out later this month, perfect timing for Pride Month next month!

Each chapter is a different story of a sapphic woman or couple - including a story of a beautiful elderly couple, toxic relationships, stories told solely through email correspondence, some only through conversation.
These are incredibly intimate, nuanced, and don’t fall victim to sensationalism or the antediluvian punishment of queer characters.
Some pack a punch, some soar gracefully, and some leave us uneasy for the character’s future.
It’s a sliver into the lives of sapphic women, and ultimately is a book of layered love.

The short stories in this book provide brief peeks into the lives of a variety of lesbian women. Through Natalia’s genuine and vivid storytelling, we get to follow slices of their lives, their journey to self-love, healing from trauma and self-discovery.
This book skillfully portrays not only all kinds of love— healthy, unhealthy, curious, codependent, devoted, heartbreaking, experimental, resilient, open, hidden but also the ups and downs, the hardhsips, and challenges that they go through in order to discover themselves, open up and live and love freely.
Highly recommend it.

What a stunning collection of short stories. However, this is not a conventional collection, and Polesso plays with the structure and perspective of each story. In many cases, some of them read like vignettes, while others were more abstract. In every case, she demonstrated an incredible talent in depicting the complexities of romance between women. These stories ranged from heartbreaking to sweet. Some focused on young adults while others were about elderly women. There were stories that depicted shy love, while others were sensual and passionate. Polesso lyrically portrays the entire spectrum of intimacy between women, defying the tendency that media has to depict queer women in a specific way.
One minor criticism I have is flow. Most of the stories we assume are traditional short stories are loaded at the start of the book, while the more experimental, shorter (and almost poem-like) stories were put in the back. I get the impression that there was some intention in this due to how the book was divided, but I felt that it caused some disruption. This isn’t a huge issue, however.

Amora me mostra o caminho que a autora percorreu entre o primeiro livro publicado dela, Recortes para álbum de fotografia sem gente, no sentido da construção de contos como uma carga narrativa mais complexa em conjunto com a prosa poética tão sua. Amora é de amores e de não amores entre mulheres. Li, desde o lançamento, resenhas que insistem em dizer: são histórias entre mulheres, mas poderiam ser entre homens e mulheres. Que bom que não são. Usar o argumento de uma tal universalização dos temas para tirar ou deixar de lado o elemento lésbico, é desconsiderar o projeto da autora. Livro fundamental nestes tempos de falta de empatia e de alteridade.

A Natalia tem um olhar muito especial e escreve histórias cativantes - duras e doces ao mesmo tempo - e eu nem sei como explicar como as tias Leci e Alvina me encantaram! Gostei muito de Amora, embora alguns contos sejam melhores que outros e, por vezes, tenha sentido uma monotonia, mas é demais ler algo dedicado ao amor entre mulheres.

Catching up on reviews so sorry for spam. Amora is a Brazilian short story collection which celebrates love between women. The stories are all really short but they are like snippets of different women’s lives and capture the breadth of the lesbian experience. It showed queer women of different ages and different circumstances, some with loving partners, others battling unrequited love and some having affairs. I really liked how the book was structured and that you each story felt refreshing and different from the last. I’d really recommend if you are looking for a good short story collection that’s a bit different with really good queer and lesbian representation.

Já falei mil vezes que contos pra mim são "ame ou odeie", e esse livro foi amor à primeira lida. Um atrás do outro, os contos são super envolventes e tocantes, seja por trazer temáticas complexas e doídas, ou retratar situações cotidianas com as quais é fácil se identificar ou entender seu contexto. Foi um grande prazer ler a Natalia e fico feliz em ver os rumos da literatura nacional contemporânea!

pensei em esperar e terminar de engolir cada palavra desse livro, mas acho que a maneira mais coerente de escrever uma review sobre ele seria justamente permitir que o pensamento fluido ficasse responsável por ela.
acho que nunca li histórias tão cruas assim? e falo isso por conta da verossimilhança com a vida e experiência sáficas tão ordinárias, mas tão pouco comentadas. visibilidade. mas Bem mais do que isso. acho que é observação, cuidado, zelo, relevância com o qual o “comum” é tratado na escrita dessa autora brasileira (e letrista!!!!) incrível.
tem um conto em específico (Flor, flores, ferro retorcido) em que eu não consegui chorar porque simplesmente entrei em estado de choque com o que tinha acabado de ler. e era algo Tão puro e simples. sabe quando a gente pensa coisas não tão extremamente relevantes que achamos que ninguém mais pensa e quando outra pessoa externaliza isso você tem aquele sentimento puramente de surpresa, misturado com incredulidade, pertencimento, conforto (às vezes até alegria) e não consegue ter reação alguma por alguns eternos segundos? é justamente esse o sentimento predominante ao longo de toda a leitura de Amoras.
não quero me delongar mais porque sei que posso me tornar prolixakk mas queria terminar comentando sobre a Qualidade da escrita, para além do conteúdo, claro. dizer que ela é fluida, direta, que prende a atenção e é extremamente convidativa parece muito pouco. a forma como a autora conecta o início e o final de cada conto, fazendo você balbuciar aquele “ahhh” quando termina a leitura, é algo realmente excepcional. claro, é improvável que a gente tenha as mesmas reações e preferências por todos os contos, isso é particular de cada um, mas, como um todo, esse livro é inteiramente completo e comovente na sua “ordinariedade” e até me fez rever a posição de supremacia “contística” d’O corpo dela e outras farras (Carmem Maria Machado, outra autora sáfica incrível). acho que encontrei mais um dos meus livros favoritos e tô realmente feliz por ter sido este :,)

não quero me delongar mais porque sei que posso me tornar prolixakk mas queria terminar comentando sobre a Qualidade da escrita, para além do conteúdo, claro. dizer que ela é fluida, direta, que prende a atenção e é extremamente convidativa parece muito pouco. a forma como a autora conecta o início e o final de cada conto, fazendo você balbuciar aquele “ahhh” quando termina a leitura, é algo realmente excepcional. claro, é improvável que a gente tenha as mesmas reações e preferências por todos os contos, isso é particular de cada um, mas, como um todo, esse livro é inteiramente completo e comovente na sua “ordinariedade” e até me fez rever a posição de supremacia “contística” d’O corpo dela e outras farras (Carmem Maria Machado, outra autora sáfica incrível). acho que encontrei mais um dos meus livros favoritos e tô realmente feliz por ter sido este :,)

Esse livro a @taglivros enviou como brinde para um bingo que ocorreu alguns encontros do grupo da TAG aqui em Recife.
Ele foi escrito pela curadora que nos indicou Só garotos da Partida Smith.
Quem ganhou o bingo foi a @li_trelando e o livro meio que virou o livro viajante do grupo. Ele passou esse mês comigo e amanhã vou levar de volta ao grupo.
É um livro de contos bem curtos, sobre o amor entre mulheres em várias formas, sobre descobertas, desafios, sem limites de idade (o conto sobre a avó lésbica é sensacional). O livro não é perfeito, como são muitos contos alguns são tão incríveis que só intensificam as faltas dos que não são tão legais assim, o que faz com que no fim o livro como um todo, pra mim, tenha sido uma leitura mediana. Talvez se eu tivesse lido lentamente a experiência tivesse sido diferente. Nunca vou saber.
Ainda assim valeu a leitura, sai da minha zona de conforto, não pela temática, mas sim por ser um livro nacional.
Indico pra quem gosta de contos curtos, pra quem quer ler uma autora mulher e brasileira, pra quem gosta de boas experiências literárias.

I have a feeling that this collection is elevated to something more in its original Portuguese, so steeped in "saudade" as it is.
I preferred the Short & Tart prose poems to the Big & Juicy section, and believe that a number of the longer stories would have actually worked better for me if they had been presented in the briefer format. Also, so many of these stories are about breakups, unrequited love, or generally tragic states of being, that they became quite monotonous to me.
Unfortunately, I just didn't enjoy this collection very much as a whole.

"Lá vai Marília até a cozinha e eu já imagino que, em pouco tempo, vou ser acordada pelo barulho de metais batendo, gavetas sendo empurradas ou por um assovio de canção velha que já não sabemos a letra."
Lindos momentos de amor, bem tocante e delicados.
Os contos mais fofos são os com casais idosas ("Marília acorda" e "As Tias") que trás além do amor, o carinho de uma família.
