How to Label and Close Your Brain's
Open Loops
The Zeigarnik Effect

This is a Blinkist audio book which I listened it tonight. It is about how to become more productive and creative, so that you achieve the goals you have set for yourself. The book shows you how to think the right thoughts, and surround yourself with the right people to sustain your motivation.
finding success through your most valuable assets:
- Selective focus - how selective are you with who and what you let into your life?
"Energy draining people—think of them as vampires needing the energy of others to survive—grow stronger by feeding on your attention…stop letting these people hijack your focus."
studies have shown that after listening to 30 minutes of negative speech, the neuron cells located in the hippocampus begin dying. And this is the part of the brain related to problem-solving.
Having a regular morning routine is great for reducing the amount of mental energy you use

- Creative ownership - how dependent are you on others for your happiness and success?
- Pragmatic growth - how consistently and practically are you growing daily?

Sometimes, you just need a bold book where someone tells it like it is.

The Science of Intelligent Achievement not only shakes you out of whatever’s hindering your success, but also inspires and empowers you towards practical action to help you achieve it. The author, Isaiah Hankel, "gets down to the brass tacks” level of pragmatic honesty while simultaneously inspiring you to re-think how you’ve been living your life, business, and entrepreneurial journey.

I’ll highlight below what I really appreciated from Isaiah Hankel’s writing—there’s an intriguing rhythm of imagery and tone that he artfully applies to convey his meaningful points. For example, in the chapter talking about the vital importance of our mental energy for focus and productivity, Isaiah often just tells you the raw, untamed truth. He says:

"Energy draining people—think of them as vampires needing the energy of others to survive—grow stronger by feeding on your attention…stop letting these people hijack your focus."

It’s a strikingly honest assertion that definitely sticks with you. Likely so, because amidst the “no-nonsense” tone (as another reviewer has described), it’s actually very wise and truthful advice to heed.

On another page, you’ll find this same natural rawness re-shaped with a wildly beautiful shift of imagery. For instance, Isaiah also writes lines like:

“That’s why you want to cherish your mental energy. Harvest it. Tend to it like a precious garden. And, when necessary, fight for it.”

Here, I'm also reflecting on lovely and inspiring words that feel quite empowering. On one hand, you'll often receive unapologetic, practical admonitions that ‘wake you up’-- like taking responsibility and responding with a resolute “no” to whatever’s sucking your energy and hindering your focus and mental energy. On the other hand, you’re also invited to reflect on empowering visuals like gently nourishing the treasure of your mental energy—your precious garden—while fiercely protecting it.

While reading this book, you get the very real sense that Isaiah’s genuinely on your side, doing all he can to champion your success and best interests as a person. Again, this book is bold. So you’ll want to be ready for it. But when you do dare to read each page, you'll discover this: that you’re actually also learning how to be even bolder in your life and business too.

I have to confess, I'm a big fan of Isaiah Hankel's first book the Escape Plan so I was really pleased come across its successor. Its written in the same intelligent, straight-forward no-nonsense manner and really helps the reader to identify what is important to them and how to focus their energy on achieving the goals required to live in a life where those important things are realised.

Isaiah Hankel has a wonderfully pragmatic style, this isn't a wishy-washy read. It's to the point and call's out the reader to identify and own up to to behaviours, habits and relationships that are draining their energy and preventing them from making the most of their lives. Isaiah's scientific background comes through strongly in the evidence that he offers to back-up his guidance, it's factual and actionable.

The last thing I want to say about the book and Isaiah's style generally is that it's really well structured. I made notes and followed the tasks of the previous book and will be doing the same with this. It's really well laid out and provides a really clear template for reflection and action.

This is a book for people who want to make changes and develop themselves in a sustainable and repeatable manner, can't recommend it enough!

Very mixed feelings on this one. I think it really should have been two separate books. Parts 1 (Selective Focus) and 3 (Pragmatic Growth) fit together well, but the middle portion (Creative Ownership) seemed mostly disparate from the rest, and focused very specifically on product development, which was completely misaligned from how the book was presented, at least on the back cover. There are definitely gems in this book, but I am not sure they were presented very compellingly. The tone was overly blunt and one-sides at times, which was effective for certain topics but I found to be too much when carried all the way through. If reading, I’d recommend taking what is useful and skimming over the rest.

I read this book thanks to Blinkist.

The key message in these blinks:

Intelligent Achievement is about attaining your goals with the use of smart, focused practices, and the tools for doing so are within anyone’s reach. Once you focus your attention on what’s truly important in reaching those goals, you can begin to filter out distractions, including people with distracting requests and negative attitudes. You can then become more independent, creative and productive with tools like the Disney method, and use lead magnets to help you gain customers. The final tool is to be more pragmatic by being aware of your negativity bias, and taking small, realistic steps that will add up to major life goals.

Actionable advice:

Hone your creative voice by listening to others.
Finding a voice that connects with your audience is about combining your interests with things that resonate with the public. You can start doing this today by talking to your friends about a topic that interests you and seeing how they react. Maybe a different but closely related topic is more interesting to them? Take in this information, and try to write a new article that incorporates your views as well as those of your friends and target audience.

What to read next:

Choose Yourself, by James Altucher

Many of us would like to gain greater control of our goals in life and become better people. However, that transformation can be quite a challenge. In these blinks, you hopefully got some inspiration and useful advice on how to get there, so let’s take a look at some more advice that can help you on your way.
Like Hankel, entrepreneur and best-selling author James Altucher argues that taking control of your goals and aspirations is the key to happiness and success. Since the 2008 global economic crisis, the world has been in a state of constant flux, so you can’t simply wait to be chosen anymore. You have to choose yourself! To learn Altucher’s secrets on how to do that, head on over to the blinks for Choose Yourself.

If you have tried to make meaningful changes in your life in the past, and failed, then this should be the first book that you read in 2018.

Full of practical information that points out common pitfalls to success and the means to overcome them, The Science of Intelligent Achievement picks up where Isaiah's first book, Black Hole Focus, ended. Where that book was about realizing your purpose and creating the path forward, this book is about how to stay on that path and make the walk more effective and time-efficient.

When making changes, it's easy to get lost in the mindset that focuses on what's lacking, "This isn't working," or "I'm not there yet." In these moments, we look to distract ourselves from the reality of the challenge and look for some level of fulfillment in meaningless pursuits (like Facebook, petty chats with friends, or watching mindless TV). In Chapter 1, Isaiah breaks down why these frivolous, yet seemingly helpful, distractions are a waste of mental energy (which happens to be our most valuable asset).

If you feel stuck, buy this book and gain insight into where you may be losing your momentum. Once you know where your wasting energy, then you can actively choose to focus it into productive pursuits to achieve intelligently. The tools and instructions are in here.

Smart, bold, insightful... and timely.

In a sea of books promising to unlock the secrets of success written largely by people who only share what's worked for them personally or shared anecdotally, this book is something different.

It's smart. And not just in the way that it makes sense - it's smart in the way that Isaiah Hankel has taken the best of behavioral science and made it strategic, and instantly applicable - to anyone's life. Beyond that, it's not dry or clinical. He has woven in rich personal example, resonate case studies, and a writing style that is both engaging and captivating.

You can't help but think of how you can apply each strategy presented to your own life throughout this entire book. You can't help but nod in agreement with the challenges to your own mental energy, the distractions pressing on your own focus, the pitfalls of your own productivity. There's no light and fluffy suggestions for your personal growth here. This is radical life review in a blueprint that you can apply practically to change your life - from your personal experience to your professional growth needs. This is perfect for anyone that feels like they're spinning their wheels and wanting more. It's one I recommend to friends and clients that need a disruptive punt in their lives!

Great read!

I highly recommend this book.

You may not expect to love this book, but I’d be surprised if you don’t.

Initially this book begins by giving insight into the authors personal and professional struggles/challenges. It humanizes the author. I really connected with the content on a personal level. It opened my eyes to some of things that maybe are not as ‘real’ in my life as I like to pretend, and also showed me to be open to the things that I pretend are valuable …. Forcing me to re-evaluate what my core values are, what I think its most important, and what I want out of my life, here and now, and in the future --- am I moving that direction?

Then you get to bulk of the book, strategic, scientific ideas surrounding strategizes for how to analyze and make those things happen (and decide what you want them to be). The thing I have loved about this book (I’m on round three), is though it is based in the sciences and the content is well cited. It doesn’t take the human aspect out of the idea or strategies for how to make your life better. As a scientist, a teacher, an artist and a person that values the human experience and relationships above all else, I believe this book is invaluable and everyone would benefit from the concepts within.

Great tips. Top takeaways:
Selective Focus, Creative Ownership and Pragmatic Growth.

Deliberate Practice and focus are what lead to success, whereas busyness leads to mediocrity.

Other people’s opinions are contagious, and negative influences are bad for your brain.

According to a 2010 study from the Proceedings of the Royal Society, being around someone with a positive attitude can improve your own outlook by 11 percent. However, being around someone with a negative attitude can make your own outlook more negative by a whopping 50 percent.

According to Stanford University biology professor Robert Sapolsky, studies have shown that after listening to 30 minutes of negative speech, the neuron cells located in the hippocampus begin dying. And this is the part of the brain related to problem-solving.

Having a regular morning routine is great for reducing the amount of mental energy you use, since you don’t have to make any decisions – everything can just go like clockwork.

Constantly checking social media, texts and email wastes mental energy. Avoid these pitfalls at all costs.

Always focus on the big goals and taking the steps that get you there.

Feeling Enlightened - In his book The Science of Intelligent Achievement Isaiah Hankel really teaches you how to manage difficult relationships. All of the methodology and approaches that he uses are backed up by scientific research. So not only will you understand what is happening to you in different relationships, but you will understand why and how to navigate the waters more successfully.

So many great tidbits that you will find yourself going back again and again to his book getting something more, or a lesson learned in a different way that you hadn't thought of before.

In this book you will also learn how to conserve fight for and protect your most valuable resource, your mental energy. One of my biggest takeaways was learning that my energy is my responsibility to guard and I can do that by avoiding those who drain it.

Become more creative and productive, by giving importance to mental energy and saying no to protect that energy. Focus leads to success, busyness to mediocrity, and negative influences and opinions are harmful, so it is best to have a pragmatic mindset (proactive and realistic). A helpful tip is to write about what you know, in order to achieve creative ownership, so if we start by writing about what has happened to us yesterday and then about childhood experiences or even other people's stories, you can write more and expand creativity. If we gather "lead magnets", or something that attracts customers and give us their details, we can grab attention and customer base. Very helpful book.

Selective focus, creative onwership & pragmatic growth

Based on three principles, the book lays out framework for personal growth. Isahiah makes you umcomfortable by choosing unconventional language and challenging some areas which self help authors don't touch. How interpersonal relations and friends can (involuntary) be a hurdle in isolating your focus.

One of the weak point of the book was its more prespective than analytical.

Good read overall

Inspiring!

Isaiahs new book has given me tools to change my life to the better. Tools based on science. One piece I really liked was the mini stacking to build habits instead of relying on your will power which is limited. I recommend the book to everyone who is stuck and believe in scientifically based methods.

Good read to switch up your perspective

I typically stay pretty busy and this book has made realize that’s not always a good thing. Great suggestions on how to prioritize (what’s worth your focus, attention, and efforts), why it’s important to say ‘no’ more often, and how to be the most productive in your day to day.

I read the summery through blinkist. Focus on your two hours of effeciency that you have daily with a pragmatic mindset that focus on what you can do ( no to do list as it dilute your energy). I recomend it to motivate prople who need clear their goals. The only backward is that it talks mainly to business and enterprise oriented tasks!

Take home messages: Say No. Move from practice to deliberate practice during mental peak hours. Don't do to-do list for the sake of doing to-do lists. Distractions are pleasurable. Checking email, tidying desk releases dopamine.
