Power vs. Force #7

Reality, Spirituality and Modern Man

Rate this book
This is the seventh book in a progressive series based on the revelations of consciousness research. It describes in detail how to discern not only truth from falsehood but also the illusion of appearance from the actual core of reality. The text explains how to differentiate perception from essence, and thereby enables the reader to resolve the ambiguities and classical riddles that have challenged mankind for centuries and baffled the best minds in history. While modern technologies have provided a plethora of new toys and conveniences, the basic problems of daily existence remain. This book provides the tools to survive and regain fundamental autonomy and inner harmony while living with the complexities of the modern world.

Sir David Ramon Hawkins, M.D, Ph.D. was a nationally renowned psychiatrist, physician, researcher, spiritual teacher and lecturer.

Founding Director of the Institute for Spiritual Research, Inc. (1983) and Founder of the Path of Devotional Nonduality (2003), Dr. Hawkins lectured widely at such places as Westminster Abbey; Oxford Forum; Universities of Notre Dame, Michigan, Argentina, Fordham and Harvard; University of California (SF) Medical School; Institute of Noetic Sciences; and Agape Spiritual Center (Los Angeles). In addition, he has been an advisor to Catholic, Protestant, and Buddhist monasteries. He conferred with foreign governments on international diplomacy and has been instrumental in resolving long–standing conflicts that were major threats to world peace.

He is featured in recent documentary films, magazines, and radio interviews (e.g., Oprah Radio and Institute of Noetic Sciences) for his work in the areas of health, healing, recovery, spirituality in modern life, consciousness research, and meditation.

Dr. Hawkins entered the field of medicine to alleviate human pain and distress, and his work as a physician was pioneering. As Medical Director of the North Nassau Mental Health Center (1956–1980) and Director of Research at Brunswick Hospital (1968–1979) on Long Island, his clinic was the largest practice in the United States, including a suite of twenty–five offices, two thousand outpatients, and several research laboratories. In 1973, he co–authored the ground–breaking work, Orthomolecular Psychiatry with Nobel Laureate chemist Linus Pauling, initiating a new field within psychiatry.

His clinical breakthroughs brought appearances on The Today Show, The Barbara Walters Show and The Mcneil/Leher News Hour. In the 1970s, he co–founded several psychiatric organizations, including the Editorial Board of the Journal of Schizophrenia and the Attitudinal Healing Center in New York.

Many awards followed, such as The Huxley Award for the "Inestimable Contribution to the Alleviation of Human Suffering," Physicians Recognition Award by the American Medical Association, 50–Year Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association, the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame, and a nomination for the prestigious Templeton Prize that honors progress in Science and Religion. In 1995, in a ceremony officiated by the H.H. Prince Valdemar of Schaumburg–Lippe at the San Anselmo Theological Seminary, he became a knight of the Sovereign Order of the Hospitaliers of St. John of Jerusalem (founded in 1077) in recognition of his contributions to humanity.

After reading Transcending the Levels of Consciousness, Truth vs. Falsehood, and Power vs. Force all by the same author, this book didn't add anything significantly new. Hawkins repeats himself at levels I can tolerate in those three books, but in this book, it was too much for me not to start skimming rather than absorb every word. This time I thought to myself, "He is a poor writer."

The thematic departure from his other books is that this is more his commentary and explanation for the woes of mankind. He calibrates things as before, which is one topic (and something you can try yourself), and he comments on policy and social issues. But like I said, I don't see anything really new here. Power vs. Force is his best, I think. And I am probably done reading his stuff now.

On page 82 Hawkins cites two publications to support his statement that "Deep polar-ice drillings and other data indicate that earth-warming cycles are the consequence of the magnetic activity of the sun's surface." One of these two publications (both of which I name below as Hawkins cites them) made no mention of magnetic activity or ice drillings; the other was not primary research. I know that Hawkins uses his truth-finding method to answer yes-no questions and will go to his method before going to conventional research. But why does he cite like this? I don't understand, and I feel like things like this weaken his book.

I liked the section on contemplation:
pg 291 - 292
Contemplation
Calm reflection and introspection allow information to become integrated, correlated, and recontextualized. Thus, a contemplative state is more relaxed, open, spontaneous, and intuitive then goal-directed activities. Contemplation allows inferences and general principles to formulate spontaneously because it facilitates discernment of essence rather than the specifics of linear logic. A benefit of contemplative comprehension is revelation of meaning and significance.

Whereas meditation generally involves removal from the world and its activities, contemplation is a simple style of relating to both inner and outer experiences of life, which permits participation but in a detached manner. Intentional doingness is focused on result, whereas contemplation is related to effortless unfolding. One could say purposeful thinking is quite 'yang' in character, whereas contemplation is very 'yin'. It facilitates the surrender and letting go of attractions, aversions, and all forms of wantingness or neediness.

Contemplation is invitational to awareness of meaning and progressive levels of abstraction. Thought is linear; understanding is contextual and nonlinear. Expansion of context enhances the significance, value, and meaning of thoughts; thus, contemplation tends to invite the influence of Self to overshadow the activity of the self.

Whereas the goal of the ego/mind is primarily to do, act, acquire, or perform, the intention of contemplation is to 'become'. While the intellect wants to know 'about', contemplation seeks Knowingness itself and autonomous wisdom. Rational thinking is time related, sequential, and linear, whereas contemplation occurs outside of sequential time. It is nonlinear and related to comprehension of essence. Devotional contemplation is a way or style of being in the world whereby one's life becomes a prayer.

Didn't realize this book too was part of the series, and I continue to read these out of order. Nonetheless, after reading books 1-3, this one (#7) was more about Hawkin's theories as applied to society as a whole, rather than the more individual-focus of books 1-3. Not nearly as impactful or standalone as the first three books.

Hawkins draws heavily from his previous works in this series to create a fairly detailed defence and explanation of the consciousness calibration technique. The book mainly focuses on society and the forces that are undermining spirituality in the West, which are those forces that promote violence, excessive sensuality and switch truth and falsehood around. Concretely, there are significant and scathing attacks on (fundamentalist) Islam and post-modern/Marxist academia, both of which he sees as having values that are totally incompatible with a spiritual person. He is also highly critical of the media, as well as politicians that lack integrity. All the while, Hawkins uses his consciousness calibration scale to back up his statements.

I frequently wondered if Hawkin's conservative and American bias was impacting the conclusions and results. I also noted his criticism of media saying the same thing over and over until people believe it is true, when he also uses a lot of repetition in this book that has a similar effect (of course repetition is also essential for educational purposes). His analysis may be weakened by picking extreme or out of context quotes from e.g. Islam and postmodernism, and not explaining terms properly (for example, oligarchy calibrates higher than democracy), which like scripture, can be wrongly interpreted and ultimately hold the individual and society back materially and spiritually.

One great chapter that was very relevant was Hawkin's list of qualities that make a villainous politician, which sounded exactly like Trump. Given how many Trump supporters I think there are within the Hawkins community, I think they should give this book a proper read and ponder whether they really think Trump is an integrous politician, or whether he is, for example, just using religion for his own advancement.

The book is good even without the consciousness calibrations, which I generally use as an interesting rule of thumb and not as absolute proof for one thing or the other (due to some of the limitations that I have explained above). Hawkins is best when he gives insights into ways in which society and individuals are ignorant and causing suffering to themselves. His spiritual, psychological and societal analysis is often fascinating and very useful in practical ways. I also deeply appreciate his non-sectarian and perennial philosophical stance, even if the framing is clearly coming from one particular view (Western, Christian). There is good practical and spiritual advice, and examples of practices one can incorporate into one's life.

Infinitas gracias!

Get ready to see reality

20 years ago, this author made predictions based on how they saw the world and they were right. This book is a very serious look at our world today and it was written almost 20 years ago at the time of this review. Be prepared when you listen or read this book, because it eye-opening what the author saw and sees for a future.

The writings of Hawkings always speak to the Self rather than the self. In this book, he doesn't give new information or reality, but rather he explores it from a more societal, religious and cultural perspective.

I loved his earlier books, and this one comes as a refresher to old material.
