Puck og Einar har været gift i to måneder, da de beslutter sig for at tilbringe sommerens sidste ferieuge i Einars idylliske barndomsby, Skoga, sammen med Pucks far, der er professor i egyptologi, og deres hvide egyptiske kat, Thotmes III. Pucks far har indvilliget i at tage med på én ufravigelig betingelse: ikke flere mord! Han er træt af de forviklinger, parret altid får rodet sig ud i. Men allerede efter den første nat brydes idyllen. Pucks far finder en død mand på plænen. Den unge mand er blevet dolket med hans store, egyptiske papirkniv. Sagen kompliceres, da flere og flere melder sig som gerningsmænd.

She was one of the first detective novelists in the Swedish language, and her books helped make the genre popular in Sweden. Her first novel, "Mördaren ljuger inte ensam," was published in 1949 and caused some controversy because two of the main characters lived in a homosexual relationship. The book was given a positive review by Barbro Alving in Dagens Nyheter.
Lange wrote more than 40 detective novels, as well as crime fiction for young adults. Most of her books are set in the fictional Swedish town Skoga, which is based on Lange's home town Nora. She was one of the original 13 members of the Swedish Crime Writers' Academy when it was founded in 1971.

Einar and Puck Bure, along with Puck’s father Professor Ekstedt, are determined to have a quiet holiday. Where better to go than Skoga to stay at Einar’s family home, in an area known as the Valley. But, the very first morning they awake to find a corpse in their garden. The victim is the son of their neighbor, Colonel Holt. Tommy Holt, had a notorious reputation, had been thrown out by his father and left Skoga three years previously. Witnesses claim to have seen him on the day of his return, headed towards the Valley, but not one of the neighbors have seen him—so they say. The Bure’s quiet vacation plans are disrupted as they become involved in helping to unravel a tangle of secrets, lies, love, hate, and jealousy in order to find the killer.
I discovered Maria Lang’s books earlier this year. She was quite prolific, publishing 40 mysteries featuring Puck Ekstedt and Inspector Christer Wijk, but unfortunately, only three of her books have been translated into English. Along with No More Murders, they include Death Awaits Thee (1955) and A Wreath for the Bride (1957), the latter of which I read and reviewed some months ago. Finding physical copies has not panned out, but at least all three are available as ebooks.
With its amateur sleuth and closed circle of suspects Lang’s story is definitely rooted in the English traditional mystery. What’s different here that Lang is quite comfortable employing the passions and sexual relations of her characters as motivation for murder, as well as the dark undercurrents that can exist in a small village. While this is by no means dark, or filled with psychological suspense, Lang’s story which begins with sunshine and nestled cottages, soon reveals a village that is in no way idyllic, and residents are far from innocent.
“The people of Skoga happily ventilate other people’s affairs, but usually behind their backs. If they meet them eye to eye, they smile engagingly and make polite conversation.”
The mystery is very well crafted. Lang is continually shifting the readers view of the victim. Is he a disreputable wastrel, or a misunderstood boy who, even though quite innocent, received the blame for everything? The pool of suspects, all of whom either have knowledge which they are withholding or a definite motive for murder, allows Lang to lay out a number of red herrings. And four confessions, all with a grain of truth, confound the issue even further.
Another very good read from Lang, and one that I definitely recommend. Now, could someone please translate more of her work? It’s either that, or once I read Death Awaits Thee I have to learn Swedish!

Tillbaka i mer lantlig miljö i Skoga - gillar miljöbeskrivningarna i denna bok mer än i bok 2. Skvallrande småstäder känns som de försvunnit, men beskrivs träffande. 40 böcker kvar!

Después de haber leído La muerte te espera, le llegó el turno a la otra novela de María Lang que, por ahora, está editada en español: Un cadáver en el jardín
Se trata de una muy buena y entretenida novela, que, debo decirlo, me gustó mucho más que la antedicha.
Escrita en tono ligero, y con algunos toques de humor, la historia transcurre en un pequeño pueblo, de esos que nos gustan tanto, donde todos se conocen, con personajes pintorescos, y donde, tras la apariencia, se esconden amoríos ilícitos y secretos familiares.
En este marco, la aparición de un cadáver altera la vida de todos y da paso a una serie de situaciones que incluyen a distintas personas que confiesan haber sido responsables de la muerte, - como en una de esas comedias de enredos, aunque con un trasfondo dramático - , y a una gata que alcanza el rol protagónico.
Escrita en 1951, la narración está a cargo de Puck, a la que conocimos en "La muerte....", que es posterior; quien, con su flamante esposo, su padre - un eminente arqueólogo, y el comisario Christer Wijk, - que actúa en forma extraoficial -, logran resolver el caso.
Con alusiones literarias y muchos guiños, - se menciona al Poirot de Christie, Lord Peter ( personaje creado por Dorothy Sayers), y al inspector French de F.W.Crofts, Un cadáver en el jardín nos remite a lo mejor del género, y nos brinda, una vez más, la posibilidad de pasar un muy buen momento recorriendo sus páginas.
Por último, expresamos el deseo de que se publiquen en español más novelas de esta interesante autora.

Jeg liker virkelig godt Maria Langs bøker. De minner om Agatha Christies på et vis, og speiler en tid med andre kjønnsroller og omgangsformer.

Este cozy me sorprendió para bien, no había leído a la autora y me ha gustado mucho su forma de contar las cosas.
Una pareja de recién casados se traslada a la casa de vacaciones que tiene el marido; van acompañados del padre de ella, un famoso arqueólogo, a la mañana siguiente encuentran el cadáver de un joven en la playa que hay en el jardín de su casa. Un gato egipcio, Tutmosis III, se verá envuelto en este asesinato donde habrá más de uno que confiese ser el asesino, y, hasta ahí, puedo leer.
Lang escribe muy bien, no es una historia ligera, me ha recordado mucho a Agatha Christine y, sin duda, seguiré leyendola, lo recomiendo.

Jag fortsätter läsa dessa små mysdeckare och på det hela gillar jag stämningen.
Det är inte särskilt spännande och även om Puck har större del i boken som helhet är det Christer Wijk som går in och löser hela mysteriet galant.
Eftersom Christer är min favorit saknar jag hans slutledningsförmåga som brukar vara mer framträdande men även han måste ju få ha semester emellanåt.
Lite kul är det ändå att Lang får till en och annan twist innan man kan känna sig helt säker på vem mördaren är.
Det passar för övrigt utmärkt att läsa dessa deckare sommartid.
Betyg: 3 grå kavajer av 5

Una joven pareja de recién casados, un excéntrico catedrático de Egiptología, una gata blanca de aires egipcios llamada Tutmosis III, un pequeño y tranquilo pueblo en el que todos se conocen... ¡Y un cadáver que aparece en el jardín de la casa en la que se alojan! Muchos sospechosos e hipótesis que te harán saltar de un probable asesino a otro un "Cozy Crime" con mucho encanto... ¿Qué más se puede pedir?

Sin dudas, no se equivocaron cuando tildaron a María Lang de ser la Agatha Christie sueca... una novela en donde no sabemos quién es el asesino hasta las últimas páginas. Misterio y dosis de humor hacen que no quieras dejar de leer. Si son fanáticos de Agatha, denle una oportunidad. Solo se tradujeron dos títulos de su extensa obra.

Tycker boken var aningen trög i början och jag hade svårt att komma igång. Men då de väl började undersöka mordet och komma fram till lösningen blev det intressantare.

Upiorna szwedzka ramotka o morderstwie wśród lokalnej elity małego szwedzkiego miasteczka. Mizoginia na pełnej, intryga bez sensu, bohaterowie obmierzli. Nie polecam.

Swedish Televisjon has made a series of Maria Lang's books about Puck and her "partners in crime" as it were, which I really like. This spurred me on to buying two of the books, but since I couldn't find them for Kindle in Swedish, I bought the English versions. I'm sad to say that I found the translation clumsy and stilted, which severly detracted from my reading experience as a whole. If I can ever get a copy in Swedish, I'll try it; if not, I'll stick to the TV-series and leave the books.

Qué bonito libro de la Agatha Christie de Suecia. Un misterio en la tradición más clásica, con personajes excéntricos y una trama interesantísima con muchas sorpresas. Lo mejor, Tutmosis III que, como todos los gatos, no ha olvidado que en el Egipto antiguo la adoraban como diosa. Muy entretenido.

Me pareció un buen libro, entretenido y atrapante, a demás de estar bien escrito; en algunas partes me pareció un poco enredado. Pero en general, es un buen libro, yo lo recomiendo ya que me mantuvo todo el tiempo al "filo del asiento".

Es entretenido y por momentos atrapante. Sin embargo, creo que hay exceso de personajes y Puck (la protagonista) es francamente insufrible (y la que menos aporta) en esta novela policíaca.

Omläsning augusti 2024. Puck är en liten tramsmaja i vanlig ordning, men det är verkligen en underhållande historia. (Brottet och en del annat är förstås förfärligt, men det finns mycket humor också)
