About the author

Péter Gárdos was born in Budapest in 1948. He is a multiple-award-winning film and theatre director.

As a director he has received more than twenty international awards at major film festivals, among them the Jury’s Special Award at the Montreal Film Festival and the Golden Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival.

Based on the true story of his parents, Fever at Dawn is his first novel.

The Turk and its inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen are world wide known and Péter Gárdos told their story in this book with his own version. I liked, how he built up the lines and makes the reader think about the machine, which still keeps its real secret. We do not know, the Turk was a machine or it was ruled by a person from inside. And actually, the history part is also important. Kings, barons, emperor of the Monarch, rule and to be ruled. The humankind did not changed a lot during the decades, just the circumstances and our tools. The reader can see how the inventor of the machine and the connected main characters can be in trouble because of the web of national and international politics, because of nations and its people.
