Insanity - Short Stories from the InsanityVerse Season 1

Rate this book
Awaiting the ninth and final book in the Insanity Series Season 1 (Mad in Wonderland), here is a collection of three short stories once published between books.

PATIENT 14:
Chronicles the history of a mysterious patient in the history of the Radcliffe Asylum. Trapped in there for years, he has been subject to experiments and secrets visits from Wonderland characters who used him to keep a great secret sealed.

FUNERAL of MASKS
Back in Wonder, Carter Pillar buries a man dear to everyone. A man he killed recently and used his soul for his own needs. The Cheshire, being the Pillar's greatest Nemesis had a different plan, one that will affect every ending of the series.

MIRROR (Never released before)
In 1982, a Sotheby auction in London offered a vintage mirror, supposedly the first-ever made and polished by German genius Justus von Liebig. The betting crowd included Carter Pillar, Alice Wonder, Lewis Carroll, the Red Queen, and a mysterious man who is friends with Lewis. What the Pillar and Alice discover about the mirror is both shocking and mind-bending. From now on the madness is irreversible.

~~~Patient 14~~~
This short story doesn't delve into Patient 14's identity or point of view. Although, if you chose to read this after the main series than you already know it.
This story instead focuses on the cruel asylum nurse duo from Radcliffe Asylum. You see just how cruel they are to many other asylum patients before Radcliffe and how terrified they were of them. The duo tortured people for many years believing the people at this current asylum were the ones they were assigned to hurt (which of course the patients weren't).
Knowing the background of these two tweedle-jerks fully adds to my love for the fact you stop hearing about them in the series after a few books. They are vile beings who truly enjoyed mushing the brains of their patients and our dear patient 14.
~~~Funeral of Masks~~~

It is not what I expected at all. I mean yes I knew there was going to be a funeral but not the one they had mentioned.

Knowing what I know from reading the series, this story left me both satisfied and majorly irritated. You are given more information about the circus and its ringmaster but also information about our dear Cheshy.

Turns out that grinning devil is more than meets the eyes.

At this funeral, you are met with knowing that the priest isn't just a holier-than-thou priest. That, and that the crowd swings on both sides of the chessboard. Two things that will remain mysteries for several paragraphs are the person being mourned and who the hell was able to get each chessboard member there in one place.

~~~Mirror of Madness~~~
It starts off with the clever Pillar at an auction to buy the first mirror ever made. A mirror, filled with power and mystery.
He, like many rich members of society, wished for that power or at least to own it so no one else will.
As the bidding ended due to a woman in red with the highest bid, Pillar and his apprentice seek to find her as she leaves. As well as Lewis and his illustrator.
When Pillar and his apprentice discover the mirror in the woods, no one else is to be found. The pair realize what must be done, so his apprentice enters the mirror.
When the apprentice, Lewis, and the illustrator come back...none of them returned the same way they left.
~~~@~~~

I really wish each of these stories were more fleshed out but they gave just enough information to help you piece together the series's plot holes.

I still recommend them to be read in case the series still left some questions for you.

Considering I've only read the first book in the Insanity series my rating probably isn't fair.

To be honest though I don't think that would of changed anything. It's not that I didn't understand what was happening it's the writing that bothered me. Nothing flowed nicely and was a sudden scene change in the same story.

Perhaps I've have to reread this once I have read the series maybe the format will make sense then

short & sweet

It was great to get some more details shared from the original series. I was hoping for something fresh like the holidays books, but this made some things more clear. Excellently written as always! The dialogue really sucks you into the different characters.

Stories that Fill-in More

I read these after I finished the final book. Each story takes a scene from the series and provides more background. Especially liked story three!
