"There's a killer on the loose."
description

The Elder is a contemporary romance with heavy intrigue, suspense, and murder. Azalea is a small town where gossip, money, and lust is alive and well. When a town's beloved lawyer is murdered, everyone becomes a suspect. Arabella Matthews, a single mom with a good heart, is put on the case. She is a dedicated detective who will do whatever it takes to solve the murder and find justice in her small town. Benton King, an accomplished attorney, is shaken by his father's murder. As he tries to analyze the facts and assist Detective Matthews, Benton discovers the truth about his father and the many secrets that dwell in his town.

description
"Someone else is next."
Told in dual POV, The Elder offers a plot with mystery and intrigue. Everyone is a suspect and no one is exactly who they seem. The relationship between Benton and Arabella begins as a friendship and transforms into something more as the body count continues to rise. The secondary characters offer intrigue and humor as the entire town is thrown into a tailspin. In true Ms. Aaron fashion, the characters are colorful, the dialogue is full of wit, and the love that blooms between Arabella and Benton is heartwarming and full of tender passion.
"I need you to be careful out there, all right?"
Overall, The Elder will appeal to contemporary romance fans who enjoy mystery, murder, and intrigue. Benton is quite swoon-worthy and paired with Arabella, I could not wait to see what was going to happen next!

This book in all honesty surprised me. I am not into murder mysteries, don’t care for dark suspense books all that much. I’m a sucker for the love, for the romance, and for the passion. This book doesn’t have much of it, although it does sizzle a bit in the background throughout the first 70%, it’s there, slowly brewing up, and then we finally get a kiss and eventually some more, then lots more. And by more, im saying it got good. This was a good book, I did enjoy it, just wish I got more, for my selfish needy needs cause I definitely love Arabella & Benton.

With saying this, this story kept my attention, I had my theories early on as to what the frush was happening in this mindfuck of a story. One murder after another, one suspect turned into another suspect, it kept spinning and crap kept happening, and goodness it was so quickly happening too. The writing kept you wanting to read on to find out what was next. This author does an amazing job at keeping you wanting more. I’m happy with the ending and how Arabella and Benton found their happiness. It was well deserved, I wish we could have gotten more into how they reached it all (that’s the love story obsessor in me🙋🏼‍♀️) but I enjoyed reading that they both got it.

I’m looking forward to hopefully getting more to the Kings, after all we’ve only seen the Elder get his HEA

3.5 stars + 1 extra 🌟 for the strong heroine!

Loved the heroine!
Strong and intelligent woman.
She didn't wet her panties, she didn't drool over the hero, she didn't embarrass herself.
Gotta love woman in charge! 😎

Well-passed crime story. Good romance.
I got a bit lost with all the characters, but overall it was a very satisfying read.

Safe!
He was not a manwhore!
No OW at all.
Sweet epilogue!

“I don’t need you to save me, Benton. I’m not that kind of woman. Never have been.”

I know that.” I stepped closer to her, forcing her to meet my gaze. “It’s one of the things I like about you. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need me at all.” I’d work as hard as I could just to hear those words from her lips— “I need you.”

Opa!!!

Celia Aaron ventured into the romantic suspense drama as a sub-genre to the those oldies noir crime mysteries...and yet she gave its layer a new shine and colour.

I'm not gonna go all deep and insightful into the story, the blurb already provides you enough suspense and alluring mysterious hints of a deeper ploy
A shocking murder.
A suspicious son.
A dedicated detective.

The more he finds out about his father—and the closer he gets to Arabella—the more he wants to keep her safe. But the killer has different plans...

See what I mean...

anyway, It would be really spoilery of me if I told you the deeds...and that's not really the point of reviewing the mystery book, right?!

I don't wanna slip and tell you who did it, duh?! Lol

But if you are curious at the least, and love a good exciting suspenseful mystery story with a slight touch of romance, like I do, then by all means, dig in...and hopefully, you will enjoy it too, just like I did. *wink*

Benton King, a wealthy Mississippi lawyer, gets the surprise of his life when he walks into his father’s office one morning to find him dead via a bullet wound to the head. His father, a well-liked member of the community, owns the law firm where they both work and leads a relatively drama free life. The fact that not much seems to be missing from the building and Mr. King’s lack of known enemies makes his murder more than a little perplexing.

Arabella Matthews, the detective on the case, is forced to accept help from King after he gets himself deputized by the sheriff’s department. He is determined to help find the person responsible for killing his father. Along the way, Arabella finds out there is more to Benton than meets the eye. He isn’t just an arrogant rich man like she originally thought. He becomes an asset in the investigation, and he treats Arabella with nothing but care and respect.

When Arabella brings Benton to her house to check on her daughter, Vivi, he learns that she is a single mother that works hard to provide for her child and sick mother. He tries to talk to her about her personal life, but she shuts him down telling him that he could never understand what it’s like to be her. Aside from their obvious differences, Arabella already has a wall erected around her heart that Vivi’s abusive father is responsible for. She isn’t about to let Benton in no matter how bad she wants to. Besides, there is a killer on the loose that needs her full attention.

Not long after King’s father’s death, bodies started dropping left and right. Not only were they looking for a killer, but they had to try to keep themselves breathing in the process. Life and death situations have a way of bringing people together, and this one is no different. Will Arabella let Benton in enough to show her that a relationship with him is worth the risk to her heart? Will they both even remain alive long enough to explore that option?

The Elder by Celia Aaron is an intriguing mystery with a slight touch of romance that will keep you guessing until the end. All of the characters besides the obvious "bad guys" are likable. Arabella is a strong, capable heroine that you can’t help but respect and admire. Benton is handsome, smart, loving, and protective of not only Arabella but also his family. I loved Arabella’s partner, Logan, and especially Benton’s brother, Porter. Both provided much needed comic relief throughout the story.

The only reason I couldn’t rate this any higher is because I expected it to be a hot romantic suspense novel. What I got (for the most part) was a straight up mystery, and unfortunately, that affected my overall enjoyment. Despite that, Celia Aaron is a go to author for me, and that hasn’t changed. I’ll still read everything that she publishes without hesitation, and I hope you will, too! She is an amazing writer, and I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next!

I recommend this one to readers that enjoy a good small town mystery!

Genre: Mystery/Romantic Suspense
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:

In the small town of Azalea, the Kings ruled. Benton, as the eldest took responsibility in keeping the family together. But the shocking murder of the family patriarch shook the family and the town, and Benton was determined to solve the crime by any means necessary.

Arabella Matthews had not been professionally challenged for a while. As a detective, she had her hands full when she led the investigation of the high profile murder. However, as relationship started to become personal, she has to learn to keep objective or risk taking things on dangerous turn.

Benton King had plenty of layers, and only the very topmost one was well-starched and straight-laced. The rest of him was a mystery.

It took me a while for me to feel for Benton. He was rigid and by the book, but that's not an issue for me. I needed to see his humanity and I'm glad I finally saw it about after about halfway.

“You can’t just walk into my life and fit, just like I couldn’t do that to yours. We are pieces to entirely different puzzles.”

I like how Arabella was dedicated to her job. Still, she was determined not to put her family out of the way.

I like the idea of the story. However, for a storyline with murder mystery, I felt it lacked intrigue and was predictable. The romance aspect took a back seat - which I don't mind, and was consistent throughout except towards the end when it became too much too soon.

The Elder is a story of uncovering the truth. It would appeal to fans of mystery/suspense with some romantic element.

P.S.: I love Porter. He might be an idiot, but a lovable one lol!

I’ve always been a fan of Celia Aaron’s books, but when I read this line from the blurb, This is a full-length mystery with a slow-burn romance, I knew this book was going to be different from what I’ve come to expect. The romance definitely took a back seat in this plot. The story centered around the murder of a prominent figure in the community and the secrets and lies that brewed within the small town of Azalea, Mississippi. Arabella was the lead detective on the case and Benton was the eldest son of the first murder victim. Did I say first? Oh yeah, the bodies continue to add up the deeper you get into this story. And while these two, along with Benton’s bungling Sheriff brother, his little sister, and Arabella’s partner try to solve the case, the chemistry between Arabella and Benton was on a slow simmer.

The characters were all incredibly easy to like. I even enjoyed the macho fighting between Benton and Logan. I loved the relationship between Benton and his siblings. And I especially loved the little ray of sunshine known as Vivi. So adorable! If you’re looking for a little mystery with your murder, you’ll love this!

Arabella Matthews is an Azalea city police detective and a single parent. Assigned as lead on the homicide case, she effortlessly takes charge. Knowing the city has limited resources, Arabella must accept reinforcements from the Sheriff’s department. Accepting the help wouldn’t be too bad except for the King name and how they view citizens from her neighborhood.

“You can’t just walk into my life and fit, just like I couldn’t do that to yours. We are pieces to entirely different puzzles.”

Benton King is an attorney and known to be the uptight elder King brother. Working in his father’s law firm, Benton is dedicated to his profession and his family’s legacy. When Benton’s father is murdered, he’s in shock but can’t sit idly by while the investigation is under foot.

“In neat blue cursive, the note said, “You’re next.”

While Arabella and Benton seem to be opposites, they find an unexpected balance and attraction to each other. As they are determined to obtain answers and find the killer, they partner together in their search. Slowly, Benton begins to realize there is more to life than the firm and Arabella sees that there may be more to Benton than she thought.

“Why did kindness bring them to the surface faster than anything else, even pain?"

In this plot driven story, the mystery builds as the investigation unfolds with possible motives and suspects. Step by step, the consequences become more dire causing Arabella and Benton to rely upon each other. Adding to the cast of characters is Porter, Benton’s younger brother and town Sheriff, whose carefree personality infuses the plot with humor.

What I liked about this story is the quirkiness of a small town where gossip is abundant and older residents like May Bell seem to be wise. With an underlying theme of socio-economic disparity and racism, it adds an unfortunate realism but these main characters rise above. Overall, I liked the author’s writing but the storyline felt predictable and I wanted more development between Benton and Arabella.

The Elder will appeal to those looking for a murder mystery with a side of romance.

A great romantic suspense read!

This was such a good read!
Well rounded main characters who for both the author peels back the layers at the perfect speed.
A mystery that wasn’t super easy to figure out.
Crimes that were interesting.
Side characters that you want to more know from, and actually ADD that something to the story.
A murder in a small town that is filled to the brim with secrets that are just waiting to be found out!

If you like romantic suspense where the romance is a slow burn, then I would definitely check out The Elder!

I stop listening at 70%.

It is not that there is something wrong here, it is simply that I don't find this story interesting. I am not into the investigation because the suspense is barely existent,it has nothing juicy enough to keep me intrigued there, and I have been waiting too long for the romance. After a 70% of the story, a few hints about a romantic interest are not sufficient for me. That, coupled with the fact that I couldn't care less for the plot, made me loose my patience and I decided not to keep wasting my time with a book I wasn't really enjoying.

This romantic suspense novel was a different type of read than I have come to expect from Celia Aaron.
It took me a while to get into this story and relate to the characters involved, in addition to this being more of a slow burn romance to begin with .
It did however turn out to be quite an engaging read with an interesting storyline and was also surprisingly way less smutty than I would have expected from this author.
I really liked this more suspenseful type of read from Celia even though it felt more of a departure from her usual style of writing.
In her leads : Arabella was such a strong heroine and Benton was more of a sweet and respectful type of hero, another different dynamic from CA.
Yeah, I definitely liked this one.😁☺😀

I have to thank my friend Alex for leading me to this one! I loved it! I loved the heroine and the hero, I loved the secondary characters- especially Vivi! The mystery was done really well! I liked Porter, but he is such a manwhore I don't think I could read a book about him. Hopefully Charlotte will get a book!

Benton carries the notorious last name of King, one half of the town's law firm, King and Wallace. His attitude matches the name, he's handsome, stuck up, and incredibly put out by anything that interferes with his life, at least that's what Arabella Matthews thinks. When his father is murdered he's stuck with the sheriff, his clown of a brother, and the towns B-team cops, Arabella and Jason. Arabella is excited for the change in pace, tired of the silly things she does each day, but a murder of one of the town's most important men isn't what she was thinking of. Thinking he can do a better job, Benton takes on an acting role as deputy alongside Arabella, but finds himself in deep trouble when his father's murder unravels a years long lie and reveals some emotions he didn't even know he could feel.

"Was she playing good cop, or did she genuinely like me? I shouldn't have cared, but I did."

Told in dual POV, The Elder is an action-packed suspense novel driven by its plot and a great set of main and secondary characters. It's intriguing, with a hint of mystery, romance, and humor to keep you entertained. I actually really liked Arabella and Benton, both are much more than meets the eye and I really enjoyed how their characters were revealed more through their actions and dialogue. Porter and Logan bring the humor to the novel, while other secondary characters represent the the life both Benton and Arabella have outside of the murder case. The Elder has a lot of talk to it, but it makes it all the more interesting. It really lends itself to the mystery aspect of the novel, unveiling things to the characters at the same time it is unveiled to the reader. Plus, the romance that blossoms in the patrol car is light and though the time spent together is out of necessity, it really allows both Arabella and Benton to get to know one another.

“In neat blue cursive, the note said, “You’re next.”

I have to admit, The Elder ended up getting 4.5 stars due to how much I enjoyed it. I love a good suspense novel and this one had just the right amount of mystery and romance to it. Plus, it's a quick read, the sort of book you get an afternoon enjoyment out of and don't have to slog through for multiple days. It lacks some of the more interesting details about how everything got so tangled up and how everyone got involved in the whole affair, but, for me it made up for that with the entertaining action and the pile of bodies adding up. It's the perfect contemporary read for fans of murder mysteries and romance.

I like stories featuring small towns in the South. I almost always find interesting characters and the town itself becomes a feature player. Put a little murder mystery into the mix and a cover that makes you take a second look, and I'm excited for the read.

The story begins with the murder of the most prominent man in the county, attorney Randall King. Turns out that Randall King has been keeping secrets that may have let to his death. His eldest son, by-the-book Benton King is determined to solve the murder and unearth his father's secrets. The one person in his way is Detective Arabella Matthews. Murder cases are far and few between in the town of Azalea, Mississippi so this murder puts Arabella squarely in the spotlight. But with intelligence, grit and determination (and some help from Benton) Arabella reveals a larger conspiracy that is beyond the murder of Mr. King.

I enjoy the mystery element and how the story unravels. Although a lot happens, I find the pace suits me. It moves along, but not in a frantic manner. I think it is because the narrative is interspersed with insights into Arabella's personal life, including her adorable daughter.

Although Benton is an attractive hero, I find that I admire Arabella much more. As a single mother working a job with non-typical hours, she tries to juggle both home life and career demands. Whereas, Benton is a little hot-headed and dramatic, Arabella is a nice foil. Her even keeled manner keeps the story from careening off the deep end. I appreciate the author for highlighting Arabella's mixed-race background without exploiting the issue, but making it still relevant.

My one critique is that I think the author could have brought out more of the unique characteristics of small-town life. I want Azalea to have a stronger presence in the story. I want it to have more of a supporting role. Yet, the supporting characters Porter, Logan, Charlotte, make enough of an impression for me to want more of their stories.

The Elder by Celia Aaron is the story of Arabella Matthews and Benton King.
This opens to Randall King the father of the King family being killed. Randall ran the Kings & Mills law-firm and was a well known person to the people of Azalea. Benton is a strong hard working son who found his father dead along with Benton's brother Porter, the county Sheriff was there too.
Arabella is a Azalea city police detective and a single parent who has been assigned as the lead detective in the homicide case. Benton and Arabella couldn't be any different if they tried. Benton is no nonsense working man who as the Elder brother is out to protect his name and family. Arabella is a hardworking singe mother who keeps butting heads with Benton at first. But their is some attraction between the two. This was really great mystery story to go with the underlying love story.
Another great read by Ms. Aaron!

Welcome to Azalea, Mississippi, where bodies are dropping like flies, everyone is a suspect, and love it's found in the strangest of places.

or people...

I've enjoyed everything I have read by Celia Aaron, and this time was no different. What was different was what I've come to expect from her. The romance was there, but I felt like it was not the main focus, and even though the tiny moments I got were deliciously hot and sweet, they left me wanting more. I know this was a slow burn romance but one thing is that, and other is to put it in the back seat.

Whit this, I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the story because I certainly did. The mystery surrounding the characters and the gossip had me on the edge of my seat, and of course, Porter. He had me laughing my ass off. He was the kind of character that you know is an idiot, but you can't stop loving him anyway. So yeah, I can't wait to read his book.

Written in a dual POV, The Elder is a story that will engage readers with suspense and a touch of romance as it deals with murders, secrets, lies, and family making it a perfect choice for those looking for a mystery/suspense read with a hint of romance.

I wanted to like this more but I’m sorry I didn’t. I enjoyed the dual povs and an H who wasn’t a manho. He was a bit prickly and snobby in the beginning, but he grew on me. I also liked that this wasn’t full of sex scenes. There was one kind of meaningful scene and that’s it.

However, once I finished this book, I couldn’t get past the feeling that everything was superficial. The connection that the MCs felt for one another, the character development, and even the suspense felt very much at the surface.

Admittedly, I also couldn’t really get into the writing since it was all told in the first person, my least favourite storytelling voice. But that’s very much a person preference and if you like to read stories told like, you might enjoy this.

Also, note to self: probably skip the other books of this series featuring the other King brother or Logan. They're disgusting manhos.

Anything that Celia Aaron writes turns to gold. She manages to convey a lot of emotions in me especially while reading her books. Original. Well written. Authentic. Celia Aaron's books just grab everything in my heart. Wow. Her books just leave me with a satisfied look on my face. Just like The Elder. This book just brought it. I was EXCITED. I was CHARMED. I was FIXATED. I was truly and irrevocably ENCHANTED. The Elder woke me up. The mesmerizing characters. The irresistibly intriguing plot. The effervescent scenes. The Elder proved to be a book that brought a very unique and fascinating storyline. Celia Aaron totally brought the drama and attraction in The Elder.

The Elder was a bold and explosive tale of danger and mayhem in a small town in the South. I was so captivated and pulled into an alluring and interesting story that sparked a gruelling murder mystery in the heart of Mississippi. The Elder was a story of a small town plagued with a murder, intricacies between an affluent family faced with loss and a romantic element giving an edge to the story. The Elder reminded me of an old Agatha Christie but dangerous, mysterious and modern. Celia Aaron totally depicted a suspenseful story set in the rich society of the South so well with realism to grip me. Celia Aaron can write anything and it shows in this slow burn romantic suspense.

One needs to be introduced to Celia Aaron's characters. They all multifaceted with backgrounds so tempting and luring. In The Elder we meet Arabella and Benton, two individuals from completely different backgrounds who fight each other at first but quickly form chemistry and love and trying to find a killer. Arabella was strong heroine, with intelligence. She was a detective who was all about the law and doing things right. I loved her. Benton at first was too rigid and too stuffy for a 30 something man. However, he redeemed himself and showed he can protect the ones he love. I would have loved more development of Benton and Arabella and that was really missing for me.

If you love uncovering mysteries and some slow burn love, then The Elder is definitely a must read.

*5 suspenseful stars *

In Celia Aaron's newest offering, The Elder, mystery and danger take center stage and readers are in for a treat. Written in a dual POV, the story begins with a murder and takes readers on a wild ride as Detective Arabella Matthews and Lawyer Benton King work to solve the crime as reluctant partners. The two start out getting along like oil and water---suspicion, secrets, arrogance, dislike--all at the forefront as these two individuals form an unlikely alliance to get to the bottom of the murder of Benton's father. As the story progresses and the threat escalates, a sexy, slow burn romance takes hold and develops secondary to the murder mystery. The entire story is exciting and fast paced and readers won't be able to put the book down. Aaron sinks her hooks in from the first page and doesn't let you go until the very last.

I loved all of the characters in the story. Each one was unique and well developed and Aaron whet my appetite just enough to leave me wanting more from the rest of the cast (Vivi, May Bell, Porter and Logan). I truly hope that she gives some of these characters their own book because Lord knows, they are larger than life and certainly deserve their own stories! Especially Porter who always lent comic relief exactly when it was needed.....I NEED more Porter in my life!!!

As with all of Celia Aaron stories, the entire plotline is well developed and perfectly executed. She plants seeds throughout that sprout in different directions, sending readers one way and then veering off in another when she throws one of her surprise curveballs. Just when you think you have the mystery figured out, she shocks you with a new clue. Aaron will keep you guessing until the very end which is exactly the way that it should be. 5 stars for this fun and suspenseful story!

When I saw this book was being released, it was one of the books that would go on my automatically wanting to read list as I love Celia Aaron as an author. Set in the South in Mississipi in a small community called Azalea, there is a family called the Kings who own the local law firm. Their father Randall King is one of the pillars of the community and owns the law firm where his son is set to inherit. One morning Randall King is murdered, and now local detectives will work at trying to find out what happened and more importantly what was kept in the safe. Soon not only Benton King but local law enforcement will realize just how dirty the heads and important figures of Azalea are, as more murders start to occur. What is the reason that these people are being murdered? Were they part of a cover-up or is someone trying to get revenge on the players of the community? I have to admit I had a little idea what was going on especially when Randall's affairs were brought to light. I loved Arabella's daughter, her moments with Benton were adorable and I liked how Celia ties the missing Okra case into the Randall King murders. If you are a fan of Romantic Suspense novels, then check out Celia Aaron's latest release "The Elder" as you will not be disappointed.

I was given an advanced readers copy of this book and have decided to voluntarily leave a review. This is my very first ever Celia Aaron book and I was extremely impressed how much I enjoyed it. I not one for mystery books, but The Elder was not only mixed with lots of action but the sexual tension was off the charts. At first a found Arabella a bit of bitch but I understand now she was just trying to do her job. Benton wow is he the full package. Not only does he have the looks money but he also has manners magic is not the norm for rich boys although Benton is no boy he is all man.
