A Shoujo Manga! DEEDLIT and PARN join up with the wizard SLAYN to free the village of HANAM from an evil warlord. They are hopelessly outnumbered and, to make matters worse, an Elf named ESTAS, is trying to come between Deedlit and Parn. It seems Estas doesn't like relationships between Elves and Humans. Will our heroes free the village? Will their love remain strong?
Lodoss War without the epic fantasy. The story reads a bit more like Chronicles of the Heroic Knight than the original Lodoss series, but not always in a good way. Estas is only a means to highlight Parn and Deedlit, which is a pity, especially since we know so few high elves intimately in the world (and therefore don't really know how Deedlit has grown. The art, however, was fun. It is definitely a product of the late 90s and so sometimes the panels read like Sailor Moon or Fushigi Yuugi. I just wish the printing was better; sometimes it is much too dark or flat to see detail.
Parn: "We will beat bad things by hitting them." Deedlit: "I love Parn." Estas (He's the boy elf): "You should not love human, love Elf instead." Deedlit: "But humans are good." Estas: "No." Deedlit: "But they are." Estas: "Okay I was wrong."
"WOMEN DON'T CARE IF THEY'RE UNHAPPY, AS LONG AS THEY'RE WITH THE MAN THEY LOVE." -An actual line of dialogue from this book.
Definitely the worst Lodoss book I've read so far. This is the romance series I guess? Avoid it if you haven't read any of the other Lodoss books becuase you're not going to care about these characters. Avoid if you have read the other Lodoss books because you're not going to care about the characters.
The art is pretty though. Kinda CLAMP-ish.
Hope book 2 isn't more of the same. Damn right I'm gonna read it.
As the cover suggests, this book focuses on the elf of the party. When an old acquaintance visits and threatens to take her home, away from her love Parn, emotions surge. The timing couldn't be worse, for the village's independence is being challenged by a king who wants taxes paid and sends his rangers against the villagers.
The English edition is a bad reproduction, with moire patterns where grey tones should be. The art is more manga style than the classic "Lady of Pharis" or "The grey witch" were, which is good or bad depending on your preferences. ;)
It's fun to see where the heroes settled after their earlier ordeals, with guest appearances by Slayn and Layla. This comic stays close to the tabletop roleplaying roots of the story, with threats that need to be dealt with. Still, it's not very memorable, unlike the original stories.
A classic from the days when English companies made it a point to "flip" The book so English speaking fans could read the story from Left to right as opposed to the original right to left style common in the Japanese Language. Unfortunately this was also a time when english companies tended to change things to make them seem more kid friendly or to make a series more accommodating for boys and girls alike so I am never sure if I get a book like that (or a bad cut jub on a page which seems common enough as well.) Anyway the flash to the past is over and the folks at CPM Manga rated this book For all ages but you might want to consider not letting your kids read it unless you review it. After all it is set in a time of warring factions and just flipping through the book real fast I saw a guy get an arrow through the neck.
For those that have seen either of the Record of the Lodoss animes or read other books in the series you should be familiar with the main cast of this book save for those introduced for this story which although involves Parn is primarily character centric on the High Elf Deedlit but for those unfamiliar with the series there is a quick summary of the continent of Lodoss as well as character profiles before you even read the story. I have liked all of the characters from Lodoss but for me personally I really liked Deedlit since the beginning because she is not only unique being a High Elf that falls for the human Parn but because her connection to nature that the others lack. I suppose the fact she is cute doesn't hurt either. :)
As with Deedlit as the main character we get to see a lot of high elves as one of Deedlit's old friend Estas shows up as trouble brews up in a nearby village. It is obvious like many high elves he has a deep prejudice of other races having little to no experience outside of the eternal ways of his people deep in the forbidden Forest of no Return. His actions and words to Deedlit cause her worry for he wishes to return her to their home. I really enjoyed reading how the characters reacted to one another and how things ended up. In the 2nd half of the book we see a story about a sorcerer that has been lost in the Forest for a very long time and creates a curse once he is able to cause the forest to die unless the mist he has created is destroyed by fire which would be catastrophic as well. Be sure to read this series if you want to find out how the first book ends.
Given a choice of favorite parts of this book I would say it is when Parn tells Estas that he is not willing to let Deedlit go unless it is her wich. Way to be manly Parn. :)
Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit's Tale: Choices was an enjoyable read! I thought it was fast-paced and read this book in one day. Loved Deedlit the most out of the three main characters. This was my first time reading manga and it won't be my last!
This manga was okay....didn't really peak my interest too much, but sometimes it takes a few volumes. Maybe I will check out more to see where it goes before I decide to continue with the series.
