It’s the Dark Knight’s wild son, Cortland “Cort” de Russe in an adventure that could see him executed for treason.
March Medieval Madness has arrived!
1518 A.D. – As a decorated knight for Henry VIII, Cort is sent to Ireland to assist the Earls of Kildare in ruling The Pale, the only strip of Ireland that the English ruled uncontested in the whole country. Cort is charged with regaining a castle lost to the Irish, but in a nasty battle, Cort is faced with a cunning warrior whom he discovers to be a lady. She tries to kill him and he throws her in the vault.
Dera MacRohan is no ordinary Irish warrior lass.
Born from the ancient MacRohan warrior bloodlines, Dera is from a long line of warrior women. She deeply resents the English and their conquest, but she also understands the subtleties of tactics and strategy. Sometimes it is easier to catch flies with honey.
Or kill an Englishman with kindness.
But Cort isn’t stupid. When the lass’ guard comes down, he suspects there’s more to it. But two can play at that game; he reckons that if he is nice to her, she will tell him what he needs to know about the Irish rebellion she is part of. He plans to put that de Russe charm to good use. But in their bid to out-charm each other, genuine feelings develop.
Cort begins to understand the Irish point of view in the rebellion against the English. By the time his father’s reinforcements show up to bolster the English line, Cort is all but siding with the enemy. When word reaches Gaston de Russe about Cort’s fondness for a certain Irish lass, Gaston must make a decision – since it’s forbidden for the English to marry or consort with the Irish, Gaston can either turn his son in as a traitor or pull the man from Ireland completely and send him off to hide until the storm blows over.
But Cort won’t leave Dera, and a de Russe traitor is born.
Live and love with Cort and Dera as they navigate the treachery of English and Irish politics, of an angry king, and of a son’s devotion to his father and family. Will Cort betray the de Russe name worse than his father ever did? Or will he forget about the Irish woman who has become his all for living in the name of family honor?
(note: This novel will be in excess of 350 pages)

Juggernaut Indie author Kathryn Le Veque is a 'tour de force' in publishing.
Kathryn is a critically acclaimed 21-time USA TODAY Bestselling author, a charter Amazon All-Star author, an Indie Reader top seller, and a #1 bestselling, award-winning, multi-published author in Medieval Historical Romance with over 100 published novels.
Among her many accomplishments, she is the CEO of Dragonblade Publishing, the #1 Historical Romance e-book publisher on Amazon. In 2020, Kathryn collaborated with Sourcebooks publishing for a Medieval Fight Club series set in Scotland.
I have read all of Kathryn Le Veque's books multiple times. Frankly, IMHO, no author does medieval romance better. Her writing hooks you right in from the very first page and keeps you glued to those pages.
There are two books that I have read so many times that I have to keep careful track of in my notes in Goodreads. I am not going to tell you how many times, but those books are (1) "The Wolfe" for Sir William de Wolfe; and (2) "The Dark One: Dark Knight" for Gaston de Russe. They are both epic masterpieces with larger than life heroes who are literally legendary knights of renown in their own lifetimes. They are both characters that are more than memorable in their unique stories that touch the heart and soul. I never tire of reading their stories and their lady loves. Sigh.
Their children's stories continue to live up to their fathers' strength of character, honor, loyalty, devotion to family and amazing feats in brutal battles. The books are always a treat, but I have never forgotten those two men and their wives who began their generational legacies.
Cort de Russe and Dera MacRohan's love story was very similar to the seemingly impossible odds that Cort's parents faced when his father, Gaston de Russe, fell in love with his mother, Remington Stoneley. How will this ever work out? If my parents could do it, shouldn't I be able to do it? And, can Cort throw away a lifetime of family, loyalty and everything he has worked so hard for to marry for love during a time marriages were arranged for political power and family connections? No easy task, believe me. Cort and Dera were both strong, well written characters that I enjoyed immensely. However, hanging over the entire story was the fact that Gaston de Russe was gravely ill. How would Gaston react to the his beloved son's predicament? Is there anyway Cort can accomplish it without bringing shame to his father, the legendary Gaston de Russe, who is the one man he admires and loves above all others?
And, for me personally, please don't let there be a death scene with one of my favorite characters?
If one is in the mood for a rich, engaging historical romance from the era of brave knights and strong, nuanced women, there honestly isn’t any better than Ms. LeVeque. I truly believe there isn’t a more consistently top-notch author in the business today. Every book I have read of hers, whether I have liked the actual story or not, delivers a quality of enjoyment one can bank on.
This specific book deals with the fight between the English and the Irish during the early reign of King Henry VIII. While it is a romance first and foremost, it also allows the reader to witness a bit of both sides of the fight between these two countries and the problems it caused. The love-story was a bit too insta for me and I do wish we had more time to deepen that story. There was so much in the plot that needed covering that it stayed closer to the surface than other books from this author. Still, a LeVeque book is always worth the time and enjoyment spent!
Dark Warrior, by Kathryn Le Veque. Well, I was a little surprised, but I found ,myself loving this romantic love story. I will say that there are a number of different names that had me struggling to keep track of who was who. Cort and Dera are a couple that I had a great time reading. They are opposite as night and day, but somehow meld together. I the humorous moments that brought some lighthearted moments to the book. I thought that the dialogue was great. I was able to follow the characters conversations. The drama, although it was important, it told in the story with candor. The story has enough entertainment in it to keep one glued to the story. The characters were all loud, charming, loyal and determined to fight for what they feel is the right thing.
“Dark Warrior” is a compelling read drawing on a fascinating and unique time during the Tudor period with characters the reader can’t help but cheer on and love.
Endearing. Heartwarming. Exciting. Intriguing. Heroic and Saddening. So many words to describe the created world of Kathryn Le Veque who brings us a story, filled with some epic characters from the past and new generations they have sired. One such warrior Gaston DeRusse has been ill for some time and seems to only get worse. King Henry has always relied upon his wisdom and request's his son Cort to go to Ireland to find out what is planned by the rebels. That plan includes seducing Dera MacRohan, an Irish warrior in her own right and learning everything he can. Cort is a charmer, handsome and women fall at his feet. When he met Dera, she was mesmerized by him... "Those pale eyes and that bright smile had her maiden's heart racing! Even if he was a Sassenach." What Cort did not know was that Dera was indeed loyal to the Irish and she was going to try to get information out of him...She was fighting for freedom from the English.. Can I just say amazing? As their journey unfolded, the feelings were explosive and I loved these two together. With the side story of another romance I would not wait to find out. Cort has won a hugh place in my heart, as well as Dera. But there is sadness in this story too. This author can bring me to tears and that is telling. To create such fierce emotions is a gift and she definately has it on so many levels. Cannot wait for more!
5++Stars - This story deserved well over five stars in my opinion. Cort and Dera's tale is such a great addition to the de Russe Legacy. Court is tasked with doing his duty in a clever way for King Henry in order to secure something for himself. Dera, is suspected of being a part of the Irish resistance of the English. While her brother Brend is "Switzerland" in this story of political and personal wills that are destined to collide.
This authors' stories are never one dimensional. She is multi-faceted with her plots and with all of her great characters who are all intertwined throughout.
You definitely will fall in love with not only Cort and Dera, but you will find yourselves gravitating towards the secondary characters as well. This lends itself to various interests as you read along.
For me, Brend grasped my heart. His story made me cry and root for him as well as the main characters. I definitely wanted to witness more of his story. A lot of his dialogue is very touching and sad. What was also extremely emotional for me was the epilogue. I try never to give out spoilers... so what I can tell you and recommend is to make sure you have some tissue and a glass of your favorite beverage. This is definitely a testament to this author's gift of being able to reach reader's emotions with her storytelling. I can say I would have loved to have been a spirit on the wall to witness a lot of the emotional dialog within this grand story. Bravo, for another exceptional time transporting delicacy in reading.
Cort de Russe is the son of one of England's greatest Knights. He has grown up alongside the young King Henry VIII. His father is a trusted adviser to the King but he is very old and not in good health. So when Henry asks Cort to find information for him there's no question that it will be done. However the de Russe men know all about the power of love and family, so what will happen when the heart goes against honour.
Dera MacRohan is an Irish rebel. She has been sent away from home by her father as a hostage and to protect her from her chosen people. Her family have been in the employ of English nobles for hundreds of years but The Irish people have had enough of overlords.
Before you start this book get a big box of tissues and a bottle of wine. You will not stop reading until the book is finished and your eyes are puffy. As usual with this author, she takes us right into the hearts of all the characters. Whether it's love or a battle we feel all the emotions with them. Our hero is a confidant man who knows exactly who he is, what he wants and knows he's capable of getting it. Our heroine is about to throw up his biggest challenge yet.
Tropes : romantic suspense, historical romance, enemies to lovers, warring families Ending : HEA (both welcomed their first born into the world) Triggers : violence, gore, abuse Spice : 🌶️🌶️/5 Angst : 🔥🔥🔥/5 OM/OW drama : none Kink: virgin h, oral

Dera was part of the Irish rebellion and was a semi hostage in de Winter household. Cort was tasked to seduced infos out of her but fell in love in the process.
Tbh the love confession was so out of the blue, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed bcs it’s 80% about the feud and 20% romance.
Nonetheless I still enjoyed it. The ending was bittersweet. Although I didn’t read Cort’s parents’ story but I could relate with Cort.
I recently lost my mom to cancer and it was hard to see her deteriorating. The scene where Cort spent his time with his dad that was on his deathbed touched me. At least we got a happy ending with them having their first baby.

That ending....I'm still sobbing! I always know to have tissues nearby when I read a Kathryn Le Veque book!! There is certainly never a dull moment in Cort and Dera's story and I had a hard time putting the book down. I found the storyline about the Irish rebels so intriguing, one can't disagree with them wanting their freedom from the English and yet it's also understandable why the English were trying to subdue them. There's always two sides to every story and the author did a great job telling both sides.
Even during the dark moments, there was humour throughout and it made me smile through my tears. Gaston de Russe's legacy comes full circle but it's certainly not the end. He will live on forever in all his children and grandchildren. Excellent writing, as usual.
King Henry is mad and demands to see Sir Cortland “Cort” de Russe because Cort married the enemy, an Irish rebel. Trenton Cort’s older brother imparts a story to Henry of what happened. Henry tasks Cort with an important mission to get to Dera MacRohan an Irish woman staying with a friend. Henry wants Cort to find out if Dera knows anything about the Irish rebellion. When Cort goes his plan is simple to get close to Dera, seduce her and learn her secrets. Dera also has a plan to find out Cort’s true purpose there by deceiving and betraying not only him but all of England. Of course things aren’t as easy as Cort suspects, Dera is much more than he bargained for. As both Cort and Dera try to tempt each other attraction happens along with true love. When everything is said and done can Cort and Dera stop the war before it kills everyone they care for plus destroys them too? T his wonderful medieval story is so intense but still a fantastic read! Yes, it is chock full of politics, enemies, deception, war and love that leaves you turning pages and unable to put the book down. The intricacy of the tale is not difficult to understand. There are some parts that suspend belief and at times seem a bit implausible but still the story flows easily. Cort the wily fun-loving hero is hard to understand especially when his true purpose just to get to know Dera isn’t all that honorable. Cort’s loyalty to his country and his friends is what makes him appealing. Dera the feisty Irish heroine is also hard to trust because of her underlying devotion to her country. Both Dera and Cort are trying to dupe each other it’s hard to even like both of them. The love doesn’t feel true because of both of their plan and makes us wonder if they will end up turning against each other in the end. Still Ms. Le Veque doesn’t disappoint with her story-telling and can enthrall and entice us without any problem. Do we want more of her amazing stories, of course we do!
Dark Warrior by Kathryn Le Veque presents yet another challenge. How an each of Le Veque's books be my favorite? This is such a lovely mixture of the past (in this world) and the present. It is the story of Cort de Russe, son of Gaston and Remington from days gone by. Cort is the good friend of King Henry VIII who has now appeared at his father's house with his newest mission. Become a spy in Henry's war against the Irish. Do this by attending Lord de Winter who is holding Dera MacRohan as hostage. Cort is charged with determining if she is an Irish rebel and if so, find out what she knows about the rebels' plans. Dera's brother, Brend is the current MacRoha legacy knight, which is a spot that has been held by a member of his family for two hundred years, serving the de Winter family. Henry has bribed Cort with a title and property of his own, something he does not have as a younger son. Cort doesn't like it, nor does his father, but decides to do it anyway.
Dera is courageous and beautiful. Cort does not immediately discover anything she may be hiding. Every story from Le Veque is a good story. This is no exception. Although I am normally on the side of the Irish, it was impossible in this book. Many of them did not behave well and I was solidly on the side of Cort and Dera. They are both terrific characters and easy to support. The battle scenes are glorious. The attraction and, later, love between Cort and Dera is one for the ages. I loved this book. I totally recommend it.
I received a free ARC of Dark Warrior from Dragonblade in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own.
Background: Ireland is having battles with England over The Pale. The Irish want to rule Ireland without the help of the English. Too easy. King Henry hears of an Irish lady living as a captive in one of his Lord's castles. Henry is a man who takes opportunities as he finds them. This captive is an opportunity to gain information about the Irish rebels.
So Henry solicits Cort, a handome English Knight, to seduce the Irish lady into telling what she knows about the Irish rebels. Not as easy as it sounds. After all, all of us have a love of our country and hearts to find someone to love.
I almost forgot to mention, England has a law that prohibits any English person from marrying an irish person. If you break that law it will be considered treason and off you go to the dungeon.
That's the set up of the story. Cort and Dera fall in love. Oops. Henry will not be happy. And then the Irish rebels raid one of the English castles in Ireland. Colt is still trying to find out what Dera's roll is in the rebels cause. He is letting his heart get in the way.
To put if simply, it is one heck of a ride. The characters are wonderful, ALL of them. Emotions are high, especially when trying to find a way to get past that stcky English law about marrying the Irish. I laughed and I cried and enjoyed every word.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 💋💋 To me, this has slightly different feel to it than Kathryn’s other epics. Still just as much Warrior action, and passion for both the brotherhood of Knights and for their women, but it’s written more as an intriguing story from the older brother to his King.
Tension is at an all time high between England and Ireland and in the middle you have two couples, Cort DeRusse, son to Gaston and Remington DeRusse and Dera MacRohan an Irish Hellion. Brend MacRohan a Legacy Knight Sworn to DeWinter and Lady Arabella DeWinter. These four make up the core of the story, they each have their own trials and as such their own love stories and destinies to achieve.
The two couples will be torn by loyalty, friendship, love and country. Will either of them be together by the end of the book?
It’s a wonderful story , I loved reading every page , every problem they came up against I felt my heart pounding. This one made me anxious for our hero’s, a lovely feeling to get from a book , to me that’s the point you know your caught in the authors web, and it so exciting. Yes your going to need tissues, but don’t you always with the best ones. Enjoy!!
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Wow!! Another great legacy story full of fast love, fighting, suspense, and heartbreak! Spoiler alert...I absolutely love these stories but I was just about to throw my phone and refuse to read another book of leVeque’s if she killed off Brend!!! This is the only author who guarantees to kill off a character she has allowed me to get close, thereby ripping a piece of my heart out. Early on I knew Brend could be a casualty and I was getting frustrated and then ticked off when he took an arrow in the chest. If this had happened any earlier in the book I wouldn’t have finished it and it would have been the last one I purchased!! Nice save though...truly was touch and go for a while!! The torches are passing to the next generation and it’s so difficult to let go. While I am not normally a crier, I couldn’t stop the tears, stuffy nose, and heartache through Gaston’s passing. LeVeque’s talents know no bounds when she is able to create a strong emotional connection with her characters in such a short amount of time. So, I am looking forward to what she creates for the rest of the family!! With that being said, please only kill off the “bad” guys!!
Cort de Russe is a knight and a son of the most powerful duke in England. Cort not only serves his father, but also a young King Henry XIII who has given him an important task. Cort , charming and handsome as well as intelligent, has been given special assignments by his king in the past, but none may be as important as this. Cort is being sent by his king to seduce information from a young woman currently a “guest” at the estate of another english knight. This young woman, Dara Mac Rohan, is quite possibly a leader of dangerous Irish rebels currently at war with England. Dara is not only brave, and thoroughly invested in her cause, but she is beautiful as well. The question soon becomes just who is seducing whom? The two embark on an adventure that begins with a bit of flirting and takes them as well as others into conflict beyond what they’d expected. This is a wonderful story with romance, adventure, humor and heart. This author writes in such a descriptive way that the reader feels as if they are sitting in the background watching events while they unfold. The two main characters are interesting and the additional players are colorful and entertaining. I highly recommend this book for romance readers and a box of tissue toward the end, it’s THAT good!
Cort de Russe by Henry VIII to if Dera MacRohan is an Irish rebel. MacRohan’s warrior bloodlines, her brother is the current MacRohan legacy warrior in service to the de Winter’s so Dera comes from a long line of warriors. Dera’s father sent her to her brother to keep her safe and out of the rebellion. When she meets Cort her first thought use her womanly wiles and gather information about the king and his plans and troops for her rebel cause. Cort at first has trouble believing intelligent Dera is a warrior woman and then she proves herself a warrior woman right in front of his eyes, seeing is believing. I love this story of seeing them grow closer as they try to gather information for their causes. When all hell breaks loose Dera is in danger the protective warrior instincts in Cort come to life to save the woman he loves. A perfect warrior woman for an elite knight. A great addition to the de Russe family! An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.
Kathryn Le Veque has done it again. Provided us with a de Russe epic full of Gaston de Russe’s family and the love they share for each other. This is Cort and Dera’s story of love, intrigue and the possibility of a rebellion of the Irish against the English. Put into the mix is King Henry with his demands for Cort’s help to spy on the beautiful Dera, that is being held as an Irish hostage. Trying to find out the Irish plans for the rebellion that she is involved in; Corts emotions seem to abandon him as he finds out more about the Irish mind set. This romantic epic keeps you turning the pages; as you seek to find the solution to Cort and Dera’s problems, as they battle the betrayal of English and Irish politics. Not to mention a very irate King of England.
When the King sends Cout de Russe on a special mission to seduce Dera MacRohan and find out if she is part of the Irish rebellion and what she knows. When Cort arrives at the de Winter holding and meets Dera she is not what he expects, she is beautiful, charming and funny. As Cort turns on the charm so does Dera both playing a game they think to win. When the game turns serious both Cort and Dera will have some decisions to make. I loved this story! I fell in love from the first chapter and could not put this book down. As always I love seeing characters from other books that I have loved. I laugh out loud throughout this book and I also cried. So much emotion! Great story, great book definitely recommend reading this one!
I honestly have no words to describe this incredible story! This story is epic and Cortland de Russe is the epitome of men!! Honestly I’m not sure any other heroin would have been worthy of him. Such an emotional book to be sure. I fell in love with Trenton de Russe in his own story. To see so much of him here and to know the love of the brothers; just brings so much emotion to the story. Henry, Brend MacRohan, the younger boys, Gaston & the White Lord! So many emotional scenes, and so incredibly well written!! Cort is everything you would imagine him to grow up to be, especially after his appearance in Dark Moon. That impish charm, a bit carefree but brilliant! So much love for this story!! 5 stars is not enough!
Have enjoyed these medieval romances so much thanks to Ms. Le Veque's amazing talent as a storyteller! This one made me cry - won't give anything away but yes, I cried at the end! Wasn't really sure that I liked Cort and Dera when I first met them in this book, but I have to say they grew on me. And the other characters - mostly Cort's family (he is the eldest son of Gaston de Russe, the Dark One, and Remington Stoneley de Russe) who appear here too, were there to remind me why I have read all her other de Russe Legacy books. Politics, regional battles, and the king's demands all make this a good read.
Loved, loved this story about Cort de Russe and Dera MacRohan. Cort is the son of Gaston de Russe, Duke of Warminster and Remington. Cort is a friend of King Henry. They grew up together. Henry sends Cort to seduce an Irish rebel which is Dera but instead he falls in love!! Several events happen in this story that the story should be read!! I would give it 10 stars if I could!
I will confess that the heroine in this story didn't capture my attention very much and she isn't your typical Le Veque heroine, I loved the story. The last few chapters had me in tears and heartbroken, but I can't say enough about this author's writing and style. Whenever I read her books, I am totally in another world. 5 stars and already waiting for the next one!
Cort deRusse was sent by King Henry to seduce and get information from the Irish hostage. Dera MacRohan was a fierce warrior lass and flirted and challenged Cort. This led to deeper feelings that were forbidden by English and Irish law. Fear of treason and death led them to France but their love and family brought them home. You will love their fun, adventures and all the great warriors and ancestors you will find in this wonderful story.
Rebellion, betrayal, seduction, spying, death, forbidden love, beautiful English and Irish lasses and hot 'n hunky knights and there's more? This story had my heart racing with anticipation; my throat hurting from holding back the sobs and my emotions in turmoil throughout! There isn't a book written by this author that I haven't loved. I feel like I become part of the story, one of the family I am reading about!
Kathryn Le Veque has done it again. The Dark Lord was one of my favorite novels by this amazing author, and I also loved this book about the Dark Lord Gaston de Russe’s first son with Remington, Cort. It is awesome how she has always managed to tie in so many characters and their bloodlines. I have read or reread most of her books, and I always get greedy with my alone time to absorb a new release. Thank you, Lisa Kistler
It‘s sad that the English and the Irish didn’t get along and even had laws to forbid marriage between people from those countries. So many wars were fought throughout history and this fictitious one was just as brutal. With strong men and women who toiled day in and out to survive these harsh times you can imagine that LOVE was the one thing that could truly bring peace.
I have read all your books and I love how you bring generations of the same family and marrying other famous family this one had me teary-eyed. I think Cortland was probably one of the best characters of the boys but now I’m waiting to see what his brothers do and what the younger sister will do with a marriage for her keep continuing to do what you do again this is the best
Once again Kathryn Lee Veque writes a novel that takes you to the lives of those in the boook
Epic stories of love betrayal adventure brotherhood this story continues the family saga of De. Russell. I felt the emotions of the characters I cried and laughed Thank you for this book please keep writing this genre and I imagine myself in the story
Another awesome book from KLV. I always love her books but this one was over the top. You will need tissues to get through it, especially the last chapter. I always loved Gaston and Remy's story. And like everyone else, Cort holds a special place in my heart. I hope we eventually get Brend and Bella's story. This is a must read book!
OMG! This was such a great story! I was swept away and was right there. When something happened in the story I was actually crying tears running down my face. When Cort and his Wife got to come home and see his Father and Mother again.. This story was so good. Thank you!
