She's a human with a busted ticker. He's an ancient warlock. The only thing they have in common are birthmarks that flare to the point of pain when they're together. But fate has other ideas…
Studying abroad despite her advancing heart disease, Leilani Gibson squeezes all the joy she can out of life. Literally bumping into the most handsome guy she's ever seen while Christmas shopping should be the best thing that's happened to her in quite some time, but she knows he'll disappear when he discovers her secret.
Born into a family of Casters, Stellan Kierkegaard lives his life away from the reminder that he alone is the only one un-mated in his coven. When he collides with Leilani at a Montreal mall, his gallant attempt to get her to the hospital when she succumbs to congestive heart failure takes an unexpected turn. Now he’s forced to withhold some secrets of his own.
Stellan poses as Leilani's fiancé until she gets the medical care she needs, but the more time they spend together, the more intense their feelings become as their birthmarks flare. If Caster prophecy is to be believed, and this reaction is only triggered in true soul mates, they must hide this fact from a trio of zealous Caster royals who have been tricked once.
The Caster couple who bears the foretold birthmark is prophesied to knit dark and light covens to lead the Caster World. Yet how can this be when Leilani is by every indication, mortal?
A great start to a new series. She has a heart that is badly damaged and although she wants to live life to the full she knows her time is limited. He is a warlock from a powerful family and has been looking for his spirit bride for centuries. When they meet she collapses but he keeps by her side through her recovery and then her life as she returns to her studies. Why does the binding mark awaken for her? She is human. As they get closer and closer her reveals more and more to her. Keeping her safe from everyone that he knows wishes to break them up using his mind reading skills. The only person he cannot read is her. An engagement, a wedding, an operation that has to be halted as they find out that her illness isn't caused by illness but by someone siphoning off her powers. Then a slow recovery whilst they try to keep her safe. Who has been using her? Will she be strong enough to take part in the next phase of the prophecy that involves them as someone has set the dogs onto them? Great read, yes a bit confusing at times as no one has actually spelled out what the prophecy is n detail.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book, especially the female lead. With limited time, she tries live life to the fullest now that she has found love.

The main characters in this story are Leilani Gibson, an American student who is studying abroad in Montreal, for one semester and a Caster called Stellan Kiekegard, who comes from a long line of Casters, similar to what we would know as warlocks. He is the only one in his whole coven/family who is still single and despairs that he will ever find a spirit wife. Leilani, known as Lani to her friends, is trying to make the most of her short life, as she has heart failure and could die at any time without a heart transplant. Meeting Stellan just by chance at a stall, gives both of them a bit of a shock, hers more serious than his!
She ends up in hospital and Stellan finds his brand exploding in pain, meaning she is his bonded life partner, but he can feel no sign of her being a Caster, she is totally human and he doesn’t understand how she will fit in with the prophecy he is linked to by his heart brand. He sticks by her side and she begins to get to know him and his quirky, old-fashioned manners. Stellan’s sister can foresee the future in her visions and tells him that Lani is the one and he needs to keep her safe from anyone who may try to stop the prophecy!
He and his family were tricked once before by another Caster family and the three royal leaders of their realm took swift and severe action against those at blame. If they find his birthmark has reacted to a human, there could be a problem for him and his family. Her parents aren’t too happy to see her come back with a serious boyfriend and the talk of marriage. They wonder if he is taking advantage of her condition, but when they see them together, they see how much he cares for Lani. He and his family are also very well off and don’t have to struggle any with money or medical bills. Stellan’s father is a well-known doctor and starts to research anything that may improve Lani’s health, for her and his son’s sake.
I wasn’t sure exactly what this book would be about and while there is an unusual matching of a pair of young people, linked by romance and a prophecy, there is also the hints of magic and what could be achieved. The ability to foresee the future, to see inside others heads and hear their very thoughts. This is just the first book in the series and points to a lot more happening in the next few books. I found both main characters likeable, even if Stellan hints at a bad reputation and past life. You get to compare how both of them have been brought up and the mysteries behind Clarissa’s past as well.
An enjoyable start and I loved reading it, I managed it straight through in one sitting and I can’t wait to read the next two books that are available in the series. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

This book is the first in a trilogy and ends on a bit of cliffhanger.
Although there is some world-building, I felt like there is still a lot to be discovered in this series (somewhat expected since this is only book 1 of a trilogy, but I still could have done with a bit more explanation in some areas). The pacing was a bit odd at times, it has a rather slow pace given the amount of time covered in the story. Stellan certainly had a level of superiority to his personality. Some of it clearly comes from having his powers and living so long, but I just felt he didn't get enough humility in this story (maybe the future ones will explore more change and growth). Leilani was a nice character. Even with her illness, she lives her life how she wants, not letting it stop her. Honestly my favorite character from this story was Eija, Stellan's twin sister. She was a great counterpoint to Stellan.
Poor Leilani s a human with a failing heart, but she's trying to live her life as best as she can. Stellan comes from a long line of casters and sadly is the only one without his life mate. Fate intervenes and brings the two together. With love and magic, there's always danger and what will he do to be with his mate. Looking froward to the next book. Leilani needs a new heart but is trying to live her life. Stellan is a caster and when he meets her by chance he is uncharacteristically physically drawn to her. He realizes that she is his fated mate and the one that should fulfill the prophecy along with him. There is another problem, she’s human. Can they overcome their obstacles of her health? Is she really human? Great story
