The adventures of a young John Difool before he became the most famous Sci-Fi anti-hero. Alexandro Jodorowsky ( The Metabarons ) and artist Zoran Janjetov, with the help of Fred Beltran ( Megalex ) on colors, take us way back to the youth of the notorious Class R private investigator. We are instantly plunged back into the unique atmosphere of the world of The Incal, as we witness John Difool's search for his identity and his origins, his first meeting with Deepo, and the appearance of many of the series' key characters, such as the Metabaron or Diavaloo.
Better known for his surreal films El Topo and The Holy Mountain filmed in the early 1970s, Alejandro Jodorowsky is also an accomplished writer of graphic novels and a psychotherapist. He developed Psychomagic, a combination of psychotherapy and shamanic magic. His fans have included John Lennon and Marilyn Manson.

Both story and art just keep getting better in Before Incal. Janjetov’s line art is more confident and finely detailed and the lush colours get nicer the more he’s involved with them. There’s still a few highly fucked up scenes, Jodo loves to shock but this highly detailed sci-fi thriller would get by just fine without the unnecessary fucked up imagery. The story is solid and a lot more coherent than I expected it to be.
