I cannot believe this book is not taught more.
While not strictly adhering to the natural world and seasonal nature of haiku, the form takes on new significance in Lenard's adept haiku-journalism. From start to finish, we follow Lenard through call-ups to the return home, all in 17 syllables or less.
I read large sections aloud to my spouse, who served in the Gulf War. "Yep, that's what it looked like."
If you want to understand war, this needs to be part of the reading list.
