When a little Amish boy in Bird-in-Hand is diagnosed with leukemia, the Plain community rallies around him—as do Martha, Mary, and Elizabeth, and Secondhand Blessings becomes a staging area to gather donated goods for a fund-raising auction. The little boy’s grandfather, Alvin Miller, donates a racehorse he recently acquired, along with a valuable saddle, to the cause. But when Alvin’s stable is set on fire and both the horse and saddle disappear, Martha and her sisters are thrust into solving a mystery that follows horse dealers and trainers from Virginia to Pennsylvania to Maryland.

Meanwhile, Martha gets disturbing news from her family in Kansas. Her own granddaughter, Celeste, has fallen ill. Will the mystery behind the fire and the disappearance of Alvin’s prize horse remain unsolved while Martha tends to the needs of her faraway family?

This book seemed rather slow moving. The three sisters decide to have an auction to raise money for a sick boy and one of the items is an expensive race horse. The horse is stolen during a barn fire along with an expensive saddle. Martha gets upsetting news about her family back in Kansas and has to decide if she should move back to Kansas or not.

This takes place in September in Pennsylvania and Kansas. The story involves a horse, sick children, an auction, a fire, and theft. Also, there is some family drama, but it's resolved by the end of the story. I thought this would end differently. I was hoping it would be someone else.

I learned a lot about how the Amish community takes care of their own in times of trouble. There are so many things that they show us by doing for each other and others outside their faith. A child in one of their families has just recently been diagnosed with leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. Since the Amish do not have insurance, they rely on the church and a fund set aside to help with needs. At this time, the fund does not have enough to cover his expenses so they come up with the idea of a public auction of donations to build it up. One of the donations was to be a horse, Plain Beauty. A horse who had recently been bought by an Amish farmer and went missing shortly after word got out about the auction. The storyline is about Amish ways in dealing with unusual expenses, trying to recover or at least find out what happened to the valuable horse, and the organization and set up for a public auction with donations from the community. It is all about doing for each other in many different circumstances.
