I hate to only give this 3 stars because Steventhen's life story is such a good one, but the book leaves a lot to be desired. As is often the case with self-published works, it needed an independent and ruthless editor. It wasn't that it was filled with typos like a lot of self-published works. But it did need an independent editor to tell the author that strangers unfamiliar with the events so near and dear to him need some more explanation and development since readers are coming into his life story cold. It helped that I'd just heard Steventhen speak at a fundraising banquet, but without that "preview," I would've had a harder time following along with the story. I found myself flipping back a lot to see who this name or that name was that was being talked about now. It felt kind of like going to your spouse's family reunion for the first time and getting barraged with a bunch of names and faces in short order to try to remember.
Some books need an editor to be ruthless in trimming the fat the author wants to include that doesn't really add to the book, but in this case, a ruthless editor was needed to push the author to put some meat on the bones of the story. It's a short book at 115 numbered pages, but that's only with a pretty large font, lots of blank or nearly blank pages, lots of white space on each page, and a LOT of pictures. Pictures are great for an autobiography, but out of 115 pages, there's actually only about 42 full pages worth of large-font text — equivalent to maybe 25 pages of text of in a typical paperback. So really, this man, who is such a great public speaker and with an unusually dramatic story of why he is even alive now (his mentally handicapped mother was raped in a mental institution but didn't abort him, and he was able to be adopted and cared for by the loving Holland family), can only come up with about 25 pages of text about his life journey? No, I think I would encourage the author, with 15 years of experience and perspective since this first attempt at telling his story, to go back and start putting together a second, more professional, edition that told the story better and let us hear more of his thoughts. Steventhen's story is a powerful example of why the common cultural assumption that it's OK to kill a baby if the father was a rapist is so wrong. We don't punish kids - especially with a death sentence - for the crimes of their fathers. Steventhen (and all other kids born from rape) had no say in how they were conceived and shouldn't be killed simply for the fact they exist. I thank God his mom didn't abort him and that he's had the impact he did in his community growing up and now raising 3 daughters of his own. But I'd like to see his story get out there in a little better polished form than it is here.

This book is filled with inspiration!!! It is a must read for those that are passionate about the gift of life. A beautiful journey from brokenness to wholeness that ONLY God can do!

Having the privilege to meet, talk with and spend time with Steventhen makes the book an even better read for me. His passion for God is contagious.

Excellent book about the journey worship leader and speaker, Steventhen Holland has been through. Having seen him minister to others, it was great to read the back story of how he got to where he is today.
