This textbook covers the first half of the Open University’s A233 module ‘Telling Stories: The Novel And Beyond’. It focuses on ‘what is realism’ and challenges students to apply the formula of realism to more tricky texts such as Ali Smith’s Hotel World, which falls into the genre of the Scottish uncanny. It’s an interesting area of literature to study and the course book provides a good guide through the accompanying set texts.
