Well, color me surprised: Star Wars – The New Republic, Vol. 4 is actually… good. Not “good for a tie-in comic,” not “good if you squint past some weird creative choices,” but genuinely good. In fact, it’s a very solid collection of stories that somehow all pull their own weight—something I wasn’t sure was legally allowed in modern comics.

You get the continuation of Luke and Tank’s storyline from the previous volume, and instead of feeling like leftover scraps from a writers’ room floor, it’s engaging, coherent, and even (brace yourself) fun. And the assortment of one-offs sprinkled throughout? They’re not filler! They actually move the overarching Star Wars story forward. It’s a strange, unfamiliar sensation to turn a page in a franchise comic and think, “Oh wow, that actually mattered.”

But the real showstopper, the reason you’ll find yourself involuntarily whispering “whoa” like you’re in a 90s commercial, is the art. Brandon Badeaux’s work in particular is so detailed, so rich, so downright competent that you may momentarily forget the last five years of comics that looked like they were drawn during someone’s lunch break. This volume’s visuals don’t just stand out, they practically slap you across the face to make sure you notice them.

In a landscape where “lazy art” has become the depressing default, Vol. 4 is an absolute standout. The line work is sharp, the environments are lush, and the action has actual weight and clarity. It’s some of the most compelling comic art I’ve seen in a long time, and honestly, if more books looked like this, we’d all complain a lot less.

So yes, believe it or not, there isn’t a bad issue or story here. It’s entertaining, consistently well-crafted, and visually exceptional. If the New Republic really wants to win hearts and minds, this is the propaganda they should be handing out.

Another decent epic collection. The Rebellion comics were my favorite of the bunch, particularly the arcs with Jorin Sol and Janek Sunbar. The artwork and character work in those issues is great, and I enjoyed the emotional dilemmas that all the main cast faced in the comics. Some of the writing in the Rebellion comics felt a bit clunky and hard to follow at times, sadly, and I feel the quality of the stories started to drop after the first arc.

The Boba Fett and Tales comics were unremarkable. Not the worst, but not the best.

I am not sure how I felt about the Vector issues. They were my least favorite in the Vector series, and ultimately it seemed unconsequential that Luke meets Celeste Morne. I did like the artwork in it though.

Superb collection...for the most part. Wyl Tarson and Tank both serve as fantastic characters with conflicted loyalties, and Deena Shan finally has some meaningful growth.

If only those lousy "Tales" stories tacked onto the end could either never have existed or, y'know, been good.

4/5 The good more than outweighs the bad, and the final bridge for the Vector crossover manages to pack an emotional punch into two measly issues.

Some good stories and some middling stories along with one or two not good stories. Overall Good but nothing exceptional.
