Hmmmmm...I’m really happy about Izumi and Kazusa’s conversation but Nina’s side story is very unsettling and creepy. Not sure I want to read more of that :/

The character arcs of the different girls are really fascinating to watch unfold, but there are noticeably an array of stakes for each. I know I should care about Kazusa’s arc most because she’s been focused on most as the lead, but I’m a tad more interested in the other girls and the resolutions of their doubts and dilemmas. We’ll see what happens in volume 6.

First off, parts of Nina’s storyline in this volume should come with a trigger warning because they involve an incredible sleazeball of a side character and it’s not an easy read.

Beyond that unpleasantness, this series consistently captures the horrors of becoming sexually aware and all the awkwardness and angst that can generate. In this volume, one of the tropiest of tropes in manga (the school festival) is used as the background for some incredible drama and hormonal awkwardness.

From Monoko’s increasing crush on Nina, Hongo’s dual problems of her writing career and her unrequited interest in her teacher, following Rika learning how to accept herself and be less judgmental, and then ending with a really tumultuous bonfire... this volume is packed solid from start to finish, but all the characters get their moments and the writing is still sharp.

Minus the parts of Nina’s storyline that aren’t so great, this is another winning volume of a consistently excellent series.

One of my minor complaints about this series is its hyperfocus on only portraying girls discovering heterosexuality. I don't expect a full spectrum of representation, that is unrealistic) but it could be harmful to only expose readers to one highly specific and normative sexuality in a series meant to be an honest exploration of taboos around sexuality.

HOWEVER!
POTENTIAL QUEER REP IN THIS AND FURTHER VOLUMES? Stay tuned!

Side note: main ship is finally going somewhere!

Many manga series seem to either exclusively represent a innocent first love experience or a gritty, sexualized world full of dangers. I enjoy how this series shows that those two depictions of love and sexual experience actually both exist in the same spaces and bump up against each other.

"When I met you, I learned for the first time that pain always accompanies love."

I don't want Sugawara to do what I think she is going to do in the next volume.

Holy fuck, do I love this series! I'm so proud of all my girls finding strength and overcoming their present obstacles! And Momoko's rejection was fucking AWESOME! Way to stand your ground, girl! Sugawara has grown quite a bit and I'm so happy that she's finally finding something she cares about. She may not be my favorite character, but I appreciate her growth. Hongo didn't get a lot of the spotlight, but considering she's had a lot of drama the last two volumes, I think she earned a much needed break. And HOLY FUCKING SHIT, am I happy that Sonezaki both confessed her love AND learned not to judge others by their appearances! She's had a lot of solid character development and it really paid off in this volume! Kazusa was really strong in this volume and I could feel her strength and determination. While I've been on the fence with her as a character, she's really made some strides to become more courageous and I can't applaud her enough. Holy shit, this volume was so damn good, what's in store for me next volume?! I'm not sure my heart can take much more!

It’s festival time! The Literary Club plans to perform a dramatic reading, written by Hongo, to establish a new legend for the festival bonfire. What could go wrong!?! Confessions, rejections, and foot wash stations abound. I loved the new rivalry that this volume sets in motion. As always, the art is fantastic I would love to see Nao Emoto draw an action manga because her characters are so expressive and panels are filled with great movement. But I am okay with more great romantic comedies. So fun!
